Endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated pathways to both apoptosis and autophagy: Significance for melanoma treatment显示文摘Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer.Disrupted intracellular signaling pathways are responsible for melanoma's extraordinary resistance to current chemotherapeutic modalities. The pathophysiologic basis for resistance to both chemo- and radiation therapy is rooted in altered genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that, in turn, result in the impairing of cell death machinery and/or excessive activation of cell growth and survival-dependent pathways. Although most current melanoma therapies target mitochondrial dysregulation, there is increasing evidence that endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress-associated pathways play a role in the potentiation, initiation and maintenance of cell death machinery and autophagy. This review focuses on the reliability of ER-associated pathways as therapeutic targets for melanoma treatment.Mohamed Hassan Denis Selimovic Matthias Hannig Youssef Haikel Robert T Brodell Mossaad Megahed 2015World Journal of Experimental Medicine2015,5,4:15
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in periampullary diverticulum: The challenge of cannulation显示文摘Periampullary diverticulum(PAD) is duodenal outpunching defined as herniation of the mucosa or submucosa that occurs via a defect in the muscle layer within an area of 2 to 3 cm around the papilla. Although PAD isusually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP), it is associated with different pathological conditions such as common bile duct obstruction, pancreatitis, perforation, bleeding, and rarely carcinoma. ERCP has a low rate of success in patients with PAD,suggesting that this condition may complicate the technical application of the ERCP procedure. Moreover, cannulation of PAD can be challenging, time consuming, and require the higher level of skill of more experienced endoscopists. A large portion of the failures of cannulation in patients with PAD can be attributed to inability of the endoscopist to detect the papilla. In cases where the papilla is identified but does not point in a suitable direction for cannulation, different techniques have been described. Endoscopists must be aware of papilla identification in the presence of PAD and of different cannulation techniques, including their technical feasibility and safety, to allow for an informed decision and ensure the best outcome. Herein, we review the literature on this practical topic and propose an algorithm to increase the success rate of biliary cannulation.Ahmed Youssef Altonbary Monir Hussein Bahgat 2016World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy2016,8,6:11

Inertial sensors technologies for navigation applications:state of the art and future trends显示文摘Inertial navigation represents a unique method of navigation,in which there is no dependency on external sources of information. As opposed to other position fixing navigation techniques, inertial navigation performs the navigation in a relative sense with respect to the initial navigation state of the moving platform.Hence, inertial navigation systems are not prone to jamming,or spoofing.Inertial navigation systems have developed vastly, from their occurrence in the 1940s up to date. The accuracy of the inertial sensors has improved over time, making inertial sensors sufficient in terms of size, weight, cost, and accuracy for navigation and guidance applications.Within the past few years, inertial sensors have developed from being purely mechanical into incorporating various technologies and taking advantage of numerous physical phenomena, from which the dynamic forces exerted on a moving body could be computed accurately.Besides, the evolution of inertial navigation scheme involved the evolution from stable-platform inertial navigation system, which were mechanically complicated,to computationally demanding strap-down inertial navigation systems.Optical sensory technologies have provided highly accurate inertial sensors,at smaller sizes.Besides, the vibratory inertial navigation technologies enabled the production of Micro-electro-machined inertial sensors that are extremely low-cost,and offer extremely low size, weight and power consumption, making them suitable for a wide range of day-to-day navigation applications.Recently, advanced inertial sensor technologies have been introduced to the industry such as nuclear magnetic resonance technology, coldatom technology, and the reintroduction of fluid-based inertial sensors. On another note, inertial sensor errors constitute a huge research aspect in which it is intended for inertial sensors to reach level in which they could operate for substantially long operation times in the absence of updates from aiding sensors, which would be a huge leap.Inertial sensors error modeling techniques have been developing rapidly trying to ensure higher levels of navigation accuracy using lower-cost inertial sensors. In this review, the inertial sensor technologies are covered extensively, along the future trends in the inertial sensors’technologies.Besides, this review covers a brief overview on the inertial error modeling techniques used to enhance the performance of low-cost sensors.Naser El-Sheimy Ahmed Youssef 2020Satellite Navigation2020,1,1:11
Approaches for Delineating Landslide Hazard Areas Using Different Training Sites in an Advanced Artificial Neural Network Model显示文摘The current paper presents landslide hazard analysis around the Cameron area, Malaysia, using advanced artificial neural networks with the help of Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing techniques. Landslide locations were determined in the study area by interpretation of aerial photographs and from field investigations. Topographical and geological data as well as satellite images were collected, processed, and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and image processing. Ten factors were selected for landslide hazard including: 1) factors related to topography as slope, aspect, and curvature; 2) factors related to geology as lithology and distance from lineament; 3) factors related to drainage as distance from drainage; and 4) factors extracted from TM satellite images as land cover and the vegetation index value. An advanced artificial neural network model has been used to analyze these factors in order to establish the landslide hazard map. The back-propagation training method has been used for the selection of the five different random training sites in order to calculate the factor's weight and then the landslide hazard indices were computed for each of the five hazard maps. Finally, the landslide hazard maps (five cases) were prepared using GIS tools. Results of the landslides hazard maps have been verified using landslide test locations that were not used during the training phase of the neural network. Our findings of verification results show an accuracy of 69%, 75%, 70%, 83% and 86% for training sites 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively. GIS data was used to efficiently analyze the large volume of data, and the artificial neural network proved to be an effective tool for landslide hazard analysis. The verification results showed sufficient agreement between the presumptive hazard map and the existing data on landslide areas.Biswajeet Pradhan Ahmed M. 6Optimization and design of an aircraft's morphing wing-tip demonstrator for drag reduction at low speeds, Part II- Experimental validation using Infra-Red transition measurement from Wind Tunnel tests显示文摘In the present paper, an ‘in-house' genetic algorithm was numerically and experimentally validated. The genetic algorithm was applied to an optimization problem for improving the aerodynamic performances of an aircraft wing tip through upper surface morphing. The optimization was performed for 16 flight cases expressed in terms of various combinations of speeds, angles of attack and aileron deflections. The displacements resulted from the optimization were used during the wind tunnel tests of the wing tip demonstrator for the actuators control to change the upper surface shape of the wing. The results of the optimization of the flow behavior for the airfoil morphing upper-surface problem were validated with wind tunnel experimental transition results obtained with infra-red Thermography on the wing-tip demonstrator. The validation proved that the 2D numerical optimization using the ‘in-house' genetic algorithm was an appropriate tool in improving various aspects of a wing's aerodynamic performances.Andreea Koreanschi Oliviu Sugar Gabor Joran Acotto Guillaume Brianchon Gregoire Portier Ruxandra Mihaela Botez Mahmoud Mamou Youssef Mebarki 2017Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2017,30,1:10

Optimization and design of an aircraft's morphing wing-tip demonstrator for drag reduction at low speed, Part Ⅰ–Aerodynamic optimization using genetic, bee colony and gradient descent algorithms显示文摘In this paper, an ‘in-house' genetic algorithm is described and applied to an optimization problem for improving the aerodynamic performances of an aircraft wing tip through upper surface morphing. The algorithm's performances were studied from the convergence point of view, in accordance with design conditions. The algorithm was compared to two other optimization methods, namely the artificial bee colony and a gradient method, for two optimization objectives, and the results of the optimizations with each of the three methods were plotted on response surfaces obtained with the Monte Carlo method, to show that they were situated in the global optimum region. The optimization results for 16 wind tunnel test cases and 2 objective functions were presented. The 16 cases used for the optimizations were included in the experimental test plan for the morphing wing-tip demonstrator, and the results obtained using the displacements given by the optimizations were evaluated.Andreea Koreanschi Oliviu Sugar Gabor Joran Acotto Guillaume Brianchon Gregoire Portier Ruxandra Mihaela Botez Mahmoud Mamou Youssef Mebarki 2017Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2017,30,1:8

Landslide susceptibility mapping using machine learning algorithms and comparison of their performance at Abha Basin,Asir Region,Saudi Arabia显示文摘The current study aimed at evaluating the capabilities of seven advanced machine learning techniques(MLTs),including,Support Vector Machine(SVM),Random Forest(RF),Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline(MARS),Artificial Neural Network(ANN),Quadratic Discriminant Analysis(QDA),Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA),and Naive Bayes(NB),for landslide susceptibility modeling and comparison of their performances.Coupling machine learning algorithms with spatial data types for landslide susceptibility mapping is a vitally important issue. This study was carried out using GIS and R open source software at Abha Basin,Asir Region,Saudi Arabia.First,a total of 243 landslide locations were identified at Abha Basin to prepare the landslide inventory map using different data sources. All the landslide areas were randomly separated into two groups with a ratio of 70%for training and 30%for validating purposes.Twelve landslide-variables were generated for landslide susceptibility modeling, which include altitude, lithology, distance to faults, normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),landuse/landcover(LULC),distance to roads, slope angle, distance to streams, profile curvature, plan curvature, slope length(LS),and slope-aspect.The area under curve(AUC-ROC)approach has been applied to evaluate, validate, and compare the MLTs performance. The results indicated that AUC values for seven MLTs range from 89.0%for QDA to 95.1%for RF.Our findings showed that the RF(AUC=95.1%)and LDA(AUC=941.7%)have produced the best performances in comparison to other MLTs.The outcome of this study and the landslide susceptibility maps would be useful for environmental protection.Ahmed Mohamed Youssef Hamid Reza Pourghasemi 2021Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,2:8
Medicinal plant products targeting quorum sensing for combating bacterial infections显示文摘Traditional treatment of infectious diseases is based on compounds that aim to kill or inhibit bacterial growth. The bacterial resistance against antibiotics is a serious issue for public health. Today, new therapeutic targets other than the bacterial wall were deciphered. Quorum sensing or bacterial pheromones are molecules called auto-inducer secreted by bacteria to regulate some functions such as antibiotic resistance and biofilms formation. This therapeutic target is well-studied worldwide, nevertheless the scientific data are not updated and only recent researches started to look into its potential as a target to fight against infectious diseases. A major concern with this approach is the frequently observed development of resistance to antimicrobial compounds. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a current overview of the quorum sensing system in bacteria by revealing their implication in biofilms formation and the development of antibiotic resistance, and an update on their importance as a potential target for natural substances.Abdelhakim Bouyahya Nadia Dakka Abdeslam Et-Touys Jamal Abrini Youssef Bakri 2017Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2017,10,8:7
Interleukin-1 and estrogen protect against disseminating dentoalveolar infections显示文摘Dentoalveolar bacterial infections cause localized tissue and bone destruction, but usually remain well-localized within teeth in immunocompetent hosts. However, in certain cases these infections may invade head and neck tissues, resulting in orofacial abscesses, cellulitis and sepsis, with resultant high morbidity and even mortality. In the present studies, we developed a novel model of spreading dentoalveolar infections in mice by treatment with neutralizing antibodies against both interleukin-1α(IL-1α)and IL-1β. Surprisingly male but not female mice given anti-IL-1 antibodies developed orofacial abscesses, weight loss, splenomegaly and sepsis. Female mice developed abscesses and sepsis comparable to males following ovariectomy(OVX), which was reversed by estrogen supplementation. Anti-IL-1 blockade inhibited IL-12, interferon γ(IFNγ) and IL-6 but not IL-10 expression in infrabony lesions, suggestive of a local anti-inflammatory response. There was greater infiltration of neutrophils and other inflammatory cells into lesions in anti-IL-1-treated animals; however, blood leukocytes had reduced bacterial phagocytic and killing activity ex vivo. Estrogen directly stimulated IL-1 production by macrophages, suggesting that the resistance of females to disseminating dentoalveolar infections may be due to their heightened pro-inflammatory responses following bacterial challenge, leading to enhanced localization of these infections.hesham youssef philip stashenko 2017International Journal of Oral Science2017,9,1:7
丙肝病毒相关的 hepatocellular 癌: 卓见进分子的机制和治疗学的策略显示文摘 Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infects more than 170 million people worldwide, and thereby becomes a series global health challenge.Chronic infection with HCV is considered one of the major causes of end-stage liver disease including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.Although the multiple functions of the HCV proteins and their impacts on the modulation of the intracellular signaling transduction processes, the drive of carcinogenesis during the infection with HCV,is thought to result from the interactions of viral proteins with host cell proteins. Thus, the induction of mutator phenotype,in liver,by the expression of HCV proteins provides a key mechanism for the development of HCV-associated hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).HCC is considered one of the most common malignancies worldwide with increasing incidence during the past decades. In many countries, the trend of HCC is attributed to several liver diseases including HCV infection. However, the development of HCC is very complicated and results mainly from the imbalance between tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes,as well as from the alteration of cellular factors leading to a genomic instability.Besides the poor prognosis of HCC patients, this type of tumor is quite resistance to the available therapies. Thus, understanding the molecular mechanisms, which are implicated in the development of HCC during the course of HCV infection, may help to design a general therapeutic protocol for the treatment and/or the prevention of this malignancy. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the molecular mechanisms, which are involved in the development of HCV-associated HCC and the possible therapeutic strategies.Denis Selimovic Abdelouahid El-Khattouti Hanan Ghozlan Youssef Haikel Ola Abdelkader Mohamed Hassan 2012World Journal of Hepatology2012,4,12:7
Temporal-spatial subspaces modern combination method for 2D-DOA estimation in MIMO radar显示文摘A 2D-direction of arrival estimation(DOAE) for multiinput and multi-output(MIMO) radar using improved multiple temporal-spatial subspaces in estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques method(TS-ESPRIT) is introduced. In order to realize the improved TS-ESPRIT, the proposed algorithm divides the planar array into multiple uniform sub-planar arrays with common reference point to get a unified phase shifts measurement point for all sub-arrays. The TS-ESPRIT is applied to each sub-array separately, and in the same time with the others to realize the parallelly temporal and spatial processing, so that it reduces the non-linearity effect of model and decreases the computational time. Then, the time difference of arrival(TDOA)technique is applied to combine the multiple sub-arrays in order to form the improved TS-ESPRIT. It is found that the proposed method achieves high accuracy at a low signal to noise ratio(SNR)with low computational complexity, leading to enhancement of the estimators performance.Youssef Fayad Caiyun Wang Qunsheng Cao 2017Journal of Systems Engineering and Electronics2017,28,4:7

Proportional fuzzy feed-forward architecture control validation by wind tunnel tests of a morphing wing显示文摘In aircraft wing design, engineers aim to provide the best possible aerodynamic performance under cruise flight conditions in terms of lift-to-drag ratio.Conventional control surfaces such as flaps, ailerons, variable wing sweep and spoilers are used to trim the aircraft for other flight conditions. The appearance of the morphing wing concept launched a new challenge in the area of overall wing and aircraft performance improvement during different flight segments by locally altering the flow over the aircraft's wings. This paper describes the development and application of a control system for an actuation mechanism integrated in a new morphing wing structure. The controlled actuation system includes four similar miniature electromechanical actuators disposed in two parallel actuation lines. The experimental model of the morphing wing is based on a full-scale portion of an aircraft wing, which is equipped with an aileron. The upper surface of the wing is a flexible one, being closed to the wing tip;the flexible skin is made of light composite materials. The four actuators are controlled in unison to change the flexible upper surface to improve the flow quality on the upper surface by delaying or advancing the transition point from laminar to turbulent regime. The actuators transform the torque into vertical forces.Their bases are fixed on the wing ribs and their top link arms are attached to supporting plates fixed onto the flexible skin with screws. The actuators push or pull the flexible skin using the necessary torque until the desired vertical displacement of each actuator is achieved. The four vertical displacements of the actuators, correlated with the new shape of the wing, are provided by a database obtained through a preliminary aerodynamic optimization for specific flight conditions. The control system is designed to control the positions of the actuators in real time in order to obtain and to maintain the desired shape of the wing for a specified flight condition. The feasibility and effectiveness of the developed control system by use of a proportional fuzzy feed-forward methodology are demonstrated experimentally through bench and wind tunnel tests of the morphing wing model.Michel Joёl Tchatchueng Kammegne Ruxandra Mihaela Botez Lucian Teodor Grigorie Mahmoud Mamou Youssef Mebarki 2017Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2017,30,2:6
The effect of microneedles on the skin permeability and antitumor activity of topical 5-fluorouracil显示文摘Topical 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)is approved for the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis.However,5-FU suffers from poor skin permeation.Microneedles have been successfully applied to improve the skin permeability of small and large molecules, and even nanoparticles,by creating micron-sized pores in the stratum corneum layer of the skin.In this report, the feasibility of using microneedles to increase the skin permeability of 5-FU was tested.Using full thickness mouse skin mounted on Franz diffusion apparatus,it was shown that the flux of 5-FU through the skin was increased by up to 4.5-fold when the skin was pretreated with microneedles(500μm in length,50μm in base diameter). In a mouse model with B16-F10 mouse melanoma cells implanted in the subcutaneous space, the antitumor activity of a commercially available 5-FU topical cream(5%)was significantly enhanced when the cream was applied on a skin area that was pretreated with microneedles,as compared to when the cream was simply applied on a skin area, underneath which the tumor cells were implanted, and without pretreatment of the skin with microneedles.Fluorouracil is not approved for melanoma therapy, but the clinical efficacy of topical 5-FU against tumors such as basal cell carcinoma may be improved by integrating microneedle technology into the therapy.Youssef W.Naguib Amit Kumar Zhengrong Cui 2014Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2014,4,1:5

Molecular principles of metastasis: a hallmark of cancer revisited显示文摘Metastasis is the hallmark of cancer that is responsible for the greatest number of cancer-related deaths.Yet,it remains poorly understood. The continuous evolution of cancer biology research and the emergence of new paradigms in the study of metastasis have revealed some of the molecular underpinnings of this dissemination process. The invading tumor cell,on its way to the target site, interacts with other proteins and cells.Recognition of these interactions improved the understanding of some of the biological principles of the metastatic cell that govern its mobility and plasticity.Communication with the tumor microenvironment allows invading cancer cells to overcome stromal challenges, settle, and colonize. These characteristics of cancer cells are driven by genetic and epigenetic modifications within the tumor cell itself and its microenvironment.Establishing the biological mechanisms of the metastatic process is crucial in finding open therapeutic windows for successful interventions. In this review, the authors explore the recent advancements in the field of metastasis and highlight the latest insights that contribute to shaping this hallmark of cancer.Jawad Fares Mohamad Y.Fares Hussein H.Khachfe Hamza A.Salhab Youssef Fares 2020Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2020,5,1:5
