| 2 | An update on iron physiology显示文摘Iron is an essential micronutrient, as it is required for adequate erythropoietic function, oxidative metabolism and cellular immune responses. Although the absorption of dietary iron (1-2 mg/d) is regulated tightly, it is just balanced with losses. Therefore, internal turnover of iron is essential to meet the requirements for erythropoiesis (20-30 mg/d). Increased iron requirements, limited external supply, and increased blood loss may lead to iron deficiency (ID) and iron-deficiency anemia. Hepcidin, which is made primarily in hepatocytes in response to liver iron levels, inflammation, hypoxia and anemia, is the main iron regulatory hormone. Once secreted into the circulation, hepcidin binds ferroportin on enterocytes and macrophages, which triggers its internalization and lysosomal degradation. Thus, in chronic inflammation, the excess of hepcidin decreases iron absorption and prevents iron recycling, which results in hypoferremia and iron-restricted erythropoiesis, despite normal iron stores (functional ID), and anemia of chronic disease (ACD), which can evolve to ACD plus true ID (ACD + ID). In contrast, low hepcidin expression may lead to iron overload, and vice versa. Laboratory tests provide evidence of iron depletion in the body, or reflect iron-deficient red cell production. | 4 | Association between vitamin D and hepatitis C virus infection: A meta-analysis显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D]and sustained virological response(SVR)in hepatitis C virus(HCV)infected individuals.METHODS:Relevant studies were identified by systematically searching MEDLINE databases up to March2012 and abstracts of the European and American Congress of Hepatology conducted in 2011.Studies must provide information on SVR and the levels of 25(OH)D3and/or 25(OH)D2[henceforth referred to as 25(OH)D]in sera samples from HCV infected individuals.The inclusion criteria were:clinical studies that included HCV infected patients aged older than 18 years regardless of HCV genotype or ethnic group;provided information on SVR rates;and were reported in the English languageas full papers.Due to the heterogeneity of studies in categorizing serum vitamin D levels,a cut-off value of30 ng/mL of serum 25(OH)D was used.Heterogeneity was assessed using I2statistics.The summary odds ratios with their corresponding 95%CI were calculated based on a random-effects model.RESULTS:Overall,11 studies(8 observational and 3interventional)involving 1575 individuals were included and 1117 HCV infected individuals(71%)showed low vitamin D levels.Most of the studies included monoinfected HCV individuals with the mean age ranging from 38 to 56 years.Four studies were conducted in human immunodeficiency virus/HCV infected individuals.Regarding vitamin D measurement,most of the studies employed radioimmunoassays(n=5)followed by chemiluminescence(n=4)and just one study employed high performance/pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC).Basal vitamin D levels varied from 17 to43 ng/mL in the studies selected,and most of the HCV infected individuals had genotype 1(1068/1575)with mean viral load varying from log 4.5-5.9 UI/mL.With regard to HCV treatment,most of the studies(n=8)included HCV individuals without previous treatment,where the pooled SVR rate was 46.4%.High rates of SVR were observed in HCV individuals with vitamin D levels above 30 ng/mL(OR=1.57;95%CI:1.12-2.2)and those supplemented with vitamin D(OR=4.59;95%CI:1.67-12.63)regardless of genotype.CONCLUSION:Our results demonstrated high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and high SVR in individuals with higher serum vitamin D levels or receiving vitamin D supplementation. | Livia Melo Villar José Antonio Del Campo Isidora Ranchal Elisabeth Lampe Manuel Romero-Gomez | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,35: | 9 |

One important measure to reduce the burden of these infections is the diagnosis of acute and chronic cases of HBV and HCV. In order to provide an effective diagnosis and monitoring of antiviral treatment, it is important to choose sensitive, rapid, inexpensive, and robust analytical methods. Primary diagnosis of HBV and HCV infection is made by using serological tests for detecting antigens and antibodies against these viruses. In order to confirm primary diagnosis, to quantify viral load, to determine genotypes and resistance mutants for antiviral treatment, qualitative and quantitative molecular tests are used. | 12 | Anticancer effect of linalool via cancer-specific hydroxyl radical generation in human colon cancer显示文摘AIM To investigate the anticancer mechanisms of the monoterpenoid alcohol linalool in human colon cancer cells.METHODS The cytotoxic effect of linalool on the human colon cancer cell lines and a human fibroblast cell line was examined using the WST-8 assay. The apoptosisinducing effect of linalool was measured using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase d UTP nickend labeling assay and flow cytometry with Annexin V. Oxidative stress was investigated by staining for diphenyl-1-pyrenylphosphine, which is a cellular lipid peroxidation marker, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Sixteen SCID mice xenografted with human cancer cells were randomized into 3 groups for in vivo analysis: control and low-dose and high-dose linalool groups. The control group was administered tap water orally every 3 d. The linalool treatment groups were administered 100 or 200 μg/kg linalool solution orally for the same period. All mice were sacrificed under anesthesia 21 d after tumor inoculation, and tumors and organs were collected for immunohistochemistry using an anti-4-hydroxynonenal antibody. Tumor weights were measured and compared between groups. RESULTS Linalool induced apoptosis of cancer cells in vitro, following the cancer-specific induction of oxidative stress, which was measured based on spontaneous hydroxyl radical production and delayed lipid peroxidation. Mice in the high-dose linalool group exhibited a 55% reduction in mean xenograft tumor weight compared with mice in the control group(P < 0.05). | 14 | Novel nutraceutic therapies for the treatment of metabolic syndrome显示文摘Nutraceutic therapies such as berberine, bitter melon,Gymnema sylvestre, Irvingia gabonensis, resveratrol and ursolic acid have been shown to help control metabolic syndrome(MetS). The effect of berberine on glucose and lipid metabolism, hypertension, obesity and MetS has been evaluated in animal models and humans. Most clinical trials involving bitter melon have been conducted to evaluate its effect on glucose metabolism; nevertheless, some studies have reported favorable effects on lipids and blood pressure although there is little information about its effect on body weight. Gymnema sylvestre helps to decrease body weight and blood sugar levels; however, there is limited information on dyslipidemia and hypertension. Clinical trials of Irvingia gabonensis have shown important effects decreasing glucose and cholesterol concentrations as well decreasing body weight. Resveratrol acts through different mechanisms to decrease blood pressure, lipids, glucose and weight, showing its effects on the population with Met S. Finally, there is evidence of positive effects with ursolic acid in in vitro and in vivo studies on glucose and lipid metabolism and on body weight and visceral fat. | 15 | Biodiversity and Dynamics of Planthoppers and Their Natural Enemies in Rice Fields with Different Nitrogen Regimes显示文摘A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of different nitrogen fertilizer rates i.e. 200, 100 and 0 kg N/ha in paddy fields at International Rice Research Institute, Manila, Philippines. Biodiversity of arthropods sampled by Blower-Vac, and dynamics of planthoppers, egg parasitoids of Homoptera trapped by rice plants with eggs of brown planthoppers (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens (St?l), and web spiders on rice canopy collected by sweeping net, were analyzed at different rice growth stages. The most abundant arthropods were sampled at the milking stage of rice, totalling 116 species identified into 14 insect orders and 15 species of spider in all samples. Meanwhile the number of arthropod species significantly increased with rice growth and the diversity indices increased with the increase of nitrogen rate at the booting stage. On the other hand, in the dominant predators, Pardosa pseudoannulata, Callitrichi formosana, Micraspis sp., Cyrtorhinus lividipennis, Veliidae sp. and Mesoveliidae sp., only C. lividipennis and Micraspis sp. were increased significantly in abundance following the application of nitrogen at the milking stage of rice. The egg parasitoids of plant-hoppers were predominated by Anagrus flaveolus and Oligosita sp. and their densities in the field without nitrogen fertilizer were markedly higher than those in fields with 100 and 200 kg N/ha at both booting and milking stages of rice. The number and web area of dominant residential spiders Tetragnatha sp. and Araneus sp. in rice canopy significantly reduced with the increase of nitrogen fertilizer. The population density of planthoppers, included BPH and the white-backed planthoppers (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera Horváth, peaked during the booting stage, however, the number of BPH in rice field with 200 kg N/ha was considerably higher than those in other two rice fields with 100 kg N/ha and 0 kg N/ha at the booting as well as the milking stage. These results indicated that the rapid growth in populations of planthopper due to excessive nitrogen might be attributed to the combination of reduction in control capacity of natural enemies and strong simulation of nitrogen to planthoppers. | Lu Zhong-xian S.
