| 2 | Heme oxygenase-1 as a therapeutic target in inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract显示文摘Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 is the inducible isoform of the first and rate-limiting enzyme of heme degradation. HO-1 not only protects against oxidative stress and apoptosis, but has received a great deal of attention in recent years because ofits potent anti-inflammatory functions. Studies with HO-1 knockout animal models have led to major advances in the understanding of how HO-1 might regulate inflammatory immune responses, although little is known on the underlying mechanisms. Due to its beneficial effects the targeted induction of this enzyme is considered to have major therapeutic po- tential for the treatment ofinflammatory disorders. This review discusses current knowledge on the mechanisms that mediate anti-inflammatory protection by HO-1. More specifically, the article deals with the role of HO-1 in the pathophysiology of viral hepatitis, inflammatorybowel disease, and pancreatitis. The effects of specific HO-1 modulation as a potential therapeutic strategy in experimental cell culture and animal models of these gastrointestinal disorders are summarized. | 3 | Increased plasma malondialdehyde and fructosamine in anemic H pylori infected patients:Effect of treatment显示文摘AIM: To unravel the possible association of malon-dialdehyde (MDA) and fructosamine in anemic H pylori infected patients and to observe the alteration in MDA and fructosamine levels in these patients after treatment for one month.METHODS: Fructosamine, MDA and glucose were estimated in 22 anemic H pylori infected patients and 16 healthy controls. Hematological parameters were also evaluated in both the groups using Sysmex-K-100 automated cell counter. The H pylori infected patients were randomly divided into two groups. H pylori infected patients in GroupⅠreceived both iron supplementation and anti-H pylori therapy, while patients in Group Ⅱ received only iron supplementation. All the biochemical and hematological parameters were estimated after one month of treatment. RESULTS: In anemic H pylori infected patients, while MDA (5.41 ± 2.16 vs 2.26 ± 0.50; P < 0.05) and fructosamine (2.64 ± 0.93 vs 1.60 ± 0.35; P < 0.05) were significantly increased, iron (32.72 ± 14.93 vs 110.25 ± 26.58; P < 0.05), hemoglobin (6.9 ± 2.6 vs 12.66 ± 0.74; P < 0.05) and ferritin (28.82 ± 16.27 vs 140.43 ± 30.72; P < 0.05) levels were significantly decreased compared with the controls. With partial correlation analysis, fructosamine was found to have a significant positive correlation with MDA. In GroupⅠ, while MDA level decreased significantly (3.11 ± 1.73 vs 5.50 ± 2.46; P < 0.05), there was a significant increase in iron (84.09 ± 29.51 vs 36.09 ± 17.81; P < 0.05), hemoglobin (10.40 ± 1.11 vs 7.42 ± 1.90; P < 0.05) and ferritin (116.91 ± 63.34 vs 30.46 ± 17.81; P < 0.05) levels after one month. There was no significant change in the levels of fructosamine in groupⅠafter treatment. Similarly, no significant alterations were noted in the levels of MDA, fructosamine, hemoglobin or ferritin in Group Ⅱ patients after one month of treatment.CONCLUSION: An increased level of fructosamine and MDA was found in anemic H pylori infected patients. Present data supports the premise that lipid peroxides per se do play a role in the glycation of plasma proteins. | 4 | Prediction of oil-water flow patterns, radial distribution of volume fraction, pressure and velocity during separated flows in horizontal pipe显示文摘Flow of two immiscible fluids gives rise to variety of flow patterns,which influence transportation process.In this work,we present detailed analysis on the prediction of flow pattern maps and radial distribution of volume fraction,pressure and velocity of a pair of immiscible liquids through a horizontal pipeline by computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation using ANSYS FLUENT 6.3.Moderately viscous oil and water have been taken as the fluid pair for study.Volume of fluid(VOF) method has been employed to predict various flow patterns by assuming unsteady flow,immiscible liquid pair,constant liquid properties,and co-axial flow.From the grid independent study,we have selected 47 037 number of quadrilateral mesh elements for the entire geometry.Simulation successfully predicts almost all the flow patterns(viz.,plug,slug,stratified wavy,stratified mixed and annular),except dispersion of oil in water and dispersion of water in oil.The simulated results are validated with experimental results of oil volume fraction and flow pattern map.Radial distribution of volume fraction,pressure and velocity profiles describe the nature of the stratified wavy,stratified mixed and annular flow pattern.These profiles help to developing the phenomenological correlations of interfacial characteristics in two-phase flow. | Anand B.DESAMALA Vinayak VIJAYAN Anjali DASARI Ashok Kumar DASMAHAPATRA Tapas K.MANDAL | 2016 | Journal of Hydrodynamics2016,28,4: | 3 |

| 6 | Evaluation of phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of brown seaweeds belonging to Turbinaria spp.(Phaeophyta,Sargassaceae) collected from Gulf of Mannar显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents of brown seaweeds belonging to Turbinaria spp.[Turbinaria conoides(T.conoides)and Turbinaria ornata(T.ornata)collected from Gulf of Mannar of southeastern coast of India in various in vitro systems.Methods:The antioxidant activity was evaluated using different in vitro systems,viz.,I,I-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH),2,2'-azino-bis-3 ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salt(ABTS),H_20_2/H0 radical scavenging,Fe^(2+)ion chelating ability,and reducing potential.Folin-Ciocalteu method was used to determine the total phenolic content of the extracts,and the results were expressed as mg of gallic acid equivalents(GE)/g of the seaweed extracts.Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances assay was employed to assess the ability of the seaweed extracts to inhibit lipid oxidation.Results:Ethyl acetate(EtOAc)fraction of T.conoides registered significantly higher phenolic content(105.97 mg GE/g)than that of T.ornata(69.63 mg GE/g).Significantly higher antioxidant potential as determined by DPPH(64.14%)radical scavenging activity was registered in EtOAc fraction of T.ornata.A higher ABTS(?)radical scavenging(IC_(50)3.16μg/mL),Fe^(2+)chelating(IC_(50)0.46 mg/mL),H_2O_2 scavenging(IC_(50)4.25 mg/mL),lipid peroxidation inhibitory(TBARS,IC_(50)0.21 mg/mL),and reducing abilities(IC_(50)52.67 mg/mL)(P<0.05)were realized in EtOAc fraction of T.ornata than other fractions.Conclusions:This study indicated the potential use of T.conoides and T.ornata as candidate species to be used as food supplements/functional foods to increase shelf-life of food items for human consumption,and nutraceuticals to deter deleterious free radical-induced life-threatening diseases. | Kajal Chakraborty Nammunayathuputhenkotta Krishnankartha Praveen Kodayan Kizekadath Vijayan Gonugontla Syda Rao | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,1: | 3 |

| 8 | Bioactivity guided isolation of mosquito larvicide from Piper longum显示文摘Objective:To isolate the larvicidal component from the fruits of Piper longum(P.longum) against the filariasis vector,Culex quinquefasciatus(C.quinquefasciatus).Methods:Pulverized fruits of P.longum were subjected to soxhlet extraction using series of organic solvents of increasing polarity.All the solvent extracts were verified for their larvicidal efficacy against 4th instar larvae of C.quinquefasciatus employing standard WHO procedure.Bioassayguided fractionation through column chromatography lead to the isolation of a bioactive amide, pipyahyine from the petroleum ether extract.Results:Petroleum ether extract was found to be the most active fraction among all the extracts tested with LC50 and LC90 being 1.03 and 2.04 ppm respectively.Whereas,pipyahyine,an isolated component of the same fraction was found to be even more effective than the parent extract in terms of LC50 being 0.58 and 1.88 ppm respectively. | 10 | Artificial Seed Production of Tylophora indica for Interim Storing and Swapping of Germplasm显示文摘Our research work demonstrates the single bead alginate-encapsulation, interim storing and conversion of Tylophora indica(Burm. Fil.) Merrill.Most effective encapsulation of in vitro nodal segments [(4 ± 1) mm long], ensuing in sphere-shaped artificial seeds of similar morphology, was achieved through 75 mmol·L^(-1)calcium chloride(CaCl_2 · 2H_2O) plus 3%(w/v) Na-alginate with 93.3% conversion frequency. The earliest conversion(within 7 days of incubation) of artificial seeds occurred in half-strength liquid Murashige and Skoog medium. Among the three different temperature regimes [(5 ± 1) °C,(15 ± 1) °C, and(25 ± 1) °C], storage of artificial seeds at(15 ± 1) °C executed the highest frequency of conversion(90%) after 15 days of storage. Lengthier storage significantly reduced the conversion frequency of artificial seeds irrespective of storage temperature. Nevertheless, the conversion frequency after 30 days of storage at(15 ± 1) °C was recorded at 70% without further decline even following45 days of storage, which evidently suggests that lower temperature(15 ± 1) °C is apt for storage and subsequent conversion of T. indica artificial seeds. | 12 | Effect of angiotensin converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism in South Indian children with nephrotic syndrome显示文摘Nephrotic syndrome is one of the most common childhood kidney diseases. It is mostly found in the age group of 2 to 8 years. Around 10%-15% of nephrotic syndrome cases are non-responders of steroid treatment(SRNS).Angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)(I/D) gene association studies are important for detecting kidney disease and herein we assessed the association of ACE(I/D) polymorphism with nephrotic syndrome in South Indian children. We recruited 260 nephrotic syndrome(162 boys and 98 girls) and 218(140 boys and 78 girls) control subjects. ACE I/D polymorphism was analyzed by PCR using genotype allele specific primers. In ACE(I/D), we did not find significant association for the ungrouped data of nephrotic syndrome children and the control subjects. Kidney biopsies were done in 86 nephrotic syndrome cases(minimal change disease, n = 51;focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, n = 27;diffuse mesangial proliferation, n = 8). We segregated them into the minimal change disease/focal segmental glomerulosclerosis groups and observed that the ACE’D’ allele was identified with borderline significance in cases of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and the ’Ⅰ’ allele was assessed as having very weak association in cases of minimal change disease. ’Ⅱ’ genotype was weakly associated with minimal change disease. Gender specific analysis revealed weak association of’ID’ genotype with female nephrotic syndrome in females. Dominant expression of DD genotype was observed in males with nephrotic syndrome. Our finding indicated that ACE(I/D) has moderate association with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. | 16 | Biosecurity risk mapping and gap analysis in South East Asia显示文摘Introduction:In today’s globalized world where travel is commonplace,a threat in one region can easily spread throughout the whole world.It is,therefore,essential for multi-disciplinary risk assessment,risk mitigation,and collaborative strategies to take place among various stakeholders to mitigate this.Any strategic plan to deal with biosecurity,therefore,needs to be a complete loop,top to bottom and bottom to top.This paper describes the results of Project 62,which involved mapping and biosecurity risk assessment in South East Asia.Materials and methods:The mapping and biosecurity risk assessment activities for the participating partner countries was carried out in two phases.The first phase involved risk assessment by six partnercountry bio-experts for their own countries and the second phase involved conducting a joint Strengths,Weaknesses,Opportunities,and Threats(SWOT)analysis and risk assessment for the South East Asian region as whole,together with international bio-experts at a workshop.Results and discussion:The following key recommendations of the project show that biosecurity needs to be addressed through stakeholder engagement at multiple levels starting from the top echelons of the government to the worker who needs to recognize and understand the threats they might face:1.Systematic analysis of existing information from BWC ISU Article 10,IHR capacities,JEE,UN Security Council Resolution 1540 Action Plan,EU CBRN NAP,and other relevant sources to develop a common understanding of the definition of biosecurity for all stakeholders in the region.2.Creation of programs for awareness building in biosecurity,not limiting them to laboratory biosecurity but using an all-inclusive approach to include border biosecurity,pandemic response,etc.3.Creation of a country-specific list of high-risk biological materials.4.Compulsory standardized biosecurity training,including responsible conduct in biosecurity research.5.Framework for one-health and security interface addressing biosecurity threats.6.Framework for ensuring information security in relation to biosecurity.7.Involvement of local/regional experts in the implementation of EU-CBRN CoE projects. | Emily Valentin Castriciones Viji Vijayan | 2020 | Journal of Biosafety and Biosecurity2020,2,1: | 2 |
