| 1 | Risk factors for neoplastic progression in Barrett's esophagus显示文摘Barrett's esophagus (BE) confers a significant increased risk for development of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), with the pathogenesis appearing to progress through a 'metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma' (MDC) sequence. Many of the genetic insults driving this MDC sequence have recently been characterized, providing targets for candidate biomarkers with potential clinical utility to stratify risk in individual patients. Many clinical risk factors have been investigated, and associations with a variety of genetic, specific gastrointestinal and other modifiable factors have been proposed in the literature. | 3 | Down syndrome and the molecular pathogenesis resulting from trisomy of human chromosome 21显示文摘Chromosome copy number aberrations, anueploidies, are common in the human population but generally lethal. However, trisomy of human chromosome 21 is compatible with life and people born with this form of aneuploidy manifest the features of Down syndrome, named after Langdon Down who was a 19th century British physician who first described a group of people with this disorder. Down syndrome includes learning and memory deficits in all cases, as well as many other features which vary in penetrance and expressivity in different people. While Down syndrome clearly has a genetic cause - the extra dose of genes on chromosome 21-we do not know which genes are important for which aspects of the syndrome, which biochemical pathways are disrupted, or, generally how design therapies to ameliorate the effects of these disruptions. Recently, with new insights gained from studying mouse models of Down syndrome, specific genes and pathways are being shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of the disorder. | 5 | Concerning the Use of Western Medical Terms to Represent Traditional Chinese Medical Concepts——Answer to Prof. XIE and His Colleagues显示文摘This paper strongly rejects the notion that the use of biomedical terms to represent traditional Chinese medical concepts is helpful to the internationalization of Chinese medicine. It further argues that this practice destroys the integrity and independence of Chinese medical concepts. Taking the term风火眼feng huo yan as an example, it shows that the biomedical term 'acute conjunctivitis' often suggested as the translation for this term is unsatisfactory, because (1) the clinical reference is not identical, (2) it introduces the concepts of 'conjunctiva' and 'inflammation', which are not Chinese medical concepts, and (3) destroys the Chinese medical concepts 'wind' and 'fire' expressed in the Chinese, which reflect the way the disease is traditionally diagnosed and treated. While for English readers not familiar with Chinese medicine, 'acute conjunctivitis' may be immediately intelligible, for those seeking a deep understanding of the subject, the literal translation (loan translation) 'wind-fire eye' is much more helpful.
