| 1 | Osteoarthritis:toward a comprehensive understanding of pathological mechanism显示文摘Osteoarthritis(OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease and a major cause of pain and disability in adult individuals. The etiology of OA includes joint injury, obesity, aging, and heredity. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms of OA initiation and progression remain poorly understood and, currently,there are no interventions available to restore degraded cartilage or decelerate disease progression. The diathrodial joint is a complicated organ and its function is to bear weight, perform physical activity and exhibit a joint-specific range of motion during movement. During OA development, the entire joint organ is affected, including articular cartilage, subchondral bone, synovial tissue and meniscus. | 3 | Anaerobic microbiologically influenced corrosion mechanisms interpreted using bioenergetics and bioelectrochemistry: A review显示文摘Microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) is a major cause of corrosion damages, facility failures, and financial losses, making MIC an important research topic. Due to complex microbiological activities and a lack of deep understanding of the interactions between biofilms and metal surfaces, MIC occurrences and mechanisms are difficult to predict and interpret. Many theories and mechanisms have been proposed to explain MIC. In this review, the mechanisms of MIC are discussed using bioenergetics, microbial respiration types, and biofilm extracellular electron transfer(EET). Two main MIC types, namely EET-MIC and metabolite MIC(M-MIC), are discussed. | 4 | Mercury removal from coal combustion flue gas by modified fly ash显示文摘Fly ash is a potential alternative to activated carbon for mercury adsorption. The effects of physicochemical properties on the mercury adsorption performance of three fly ash samples were investigated. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other methods were used to characterize the samples. Results indicate that mercury adsorption on fly ash is primarily physisorption and chemisorption. High specific surface areas and small pore diameters are beneficial to efficient mercury removal. Incompletely burned carbon is also an important factor for the improvement of mercury removal efficiency, in particular. The C-M bond, which is formed by the reaction of C and Ti, Si and other elements, may improve mercury oxidation. The samples modified with CuBr2 , CuCl 2 and FeCl3 showed excellent performance for Hg removal, because the chlorine in metal chlorides acts as an oxidant that promotes the conversion of elemental mercury (Hg0) into its oxidized form (Hg2+). Cu2+ and Fe3+ can also promote Hg 0 oxidation as catalysts. HCl and O2 promote the adsorption of Hg by modified fly ash, whereas SO2 inhibits the Hg adsorption because of competitive adsorption for active sites. | 5 | Toward a better understanding of microbiologically influenced corrosion caused by sulfate reducing bacteria显示文摘Sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) are often the culprits of microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) in anoxic environments because sulfate is a ubiquitous oxidant. MIC of carbon steel caused by SRB is the most intensively investigated topic in MIC because of its practical importance. It is also because biogenic sulfides complicate mechanistic SRB MIC studies, making SRB MIC of carbon steel is a long-lasting topic that has generated considerable confusions. It is expedient to think that biogenic H_2S secreted by SRB acidifies the broth because it is an acid gas. However, this is not true because endogenous H_2S gets its H^+ from organic carbon oxidation and the fluid itself in the first place rather than an external source. Many people believe that biogenic H_2S is responsible for SRB MIC of carbon steel. However, in recent years,well designed mechanistic studies provided evidence that contradicts this misconception. Experimental data have shown that cathodic electron harvest by an SRB biofilm from elemental iron via extracellular electron transfer(EET) for energy production by SRB is the primary cause. It has been demonstrated that when a mature SRB biofilm is subjected to carbon source starvation, it switches to elemental iron as an electron source and becomes more corrosive. It is anticipated that manipulations of EET related genes will provide genetic-level evidence to support the biocathode theory in the future. Helicobacter pylori ( H pylon)infection is causally linked to gastric cancer. However, theexpression of COX-2 in various stages of Hpylori-associatedgastric carcinogenesis pathway has not been elucidated.Therefore, the aim of this study was to clarify the role ofH pyloriinduced COX-2 expression during carcinogenesisin the stomach.METHODS: Gastric biopsies from 138 subjects [30 casesof chronic superficial gastritis (CSG), 28 cases of gastricglandular atrophy (GA), 45 cases of gastric mucosal intestinalmetaplasia (IM), 12 cases of moderate gastric epithelialdysplasia and 23 cases of gastric cancer] were enrolled.Hpyloriinfection was assessed by a rapid urease test andhistological examination (modified Giemsa staining). Theexpression of COX-1 and COX-2 in human gastric mucosawas detected by immunohistochemical staining.I^7~I_~: Hpyloriinfeddon rate was 64.3% in GA and 69.5%in gastric cancer, which was significantly higher than that(36.7%) in CSG (P<0.05). The positive expression rates ofCOX-2 were 10.0%, 35.7%, 37.8%, 41.7% and 69.5% inCSG, GA, IM, dysplasia and gastric cancer, respectively.From CSG to GA, IM, dysplasia and finally to gastric cancer,expression of COX-2 showed an ascending tendency, whereasCOX-1 expression did not change significantly in the gastricmucosa. | 8 | Regeneration performance and carbon consumption of semi-coke and activated coke for SO_2 and NO removal显示文摘To decrease the operating cost of flue gas purification technologies based on carbon-based materials, the adsorption and regeneration performance of low-price semi-coke and activated coke were compared for SO2 and NO removal in a simulated flue gas. The functional groups of the two adsorbents before and after regeneration were characterized by a Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectrometer, and were quantitatively assessed using temperature programmed desorption(TPD) coupled with FTIR and acid–base titration. The results show that semi-coke had higher adsorption capacity(16.2% for SO2 and 38.6% for NO) than activated coke because of its higher content of basic functional groups and lactones. After regeneration, the adsorption performance of semi-coke decreased because the number of active functional groups decreased and the micropores increased. Semi-coke had better regeneration performance than activated coke. Semi-coke had a larger SO2 recovery of 7.2% and smaller carbon consumption of 12% compared to activated coke. | 9 | Effect of electrically stimulating acupoint, Zusanli(ST 36), on patient’s recovery after laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection: a randomized controlled trial显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection and its clinical significance.METHODS:Sixty-four patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal resection were randomly divided into two groups,the control group (group A) and the TEAS group (group B).Patients in the TEAS group received electroacupuncture stimulation of bilateral Zusanli (ST 36) at 30 min before anesthesia to the end of surgery.The patients in the control group were not given the stimulation.Perioperative anesthesia management of the two groups were performed according to the ERAS guidelines,and postoperative patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) was used.The amount of remifentanil used in the two groups was observed and recorded,and the visual analogue scale (VAS) of the 4,12,24 and 48 h after surgery in the two groups was recorded.Moreover,postoperative anal exhaust time,postoperative feeding time,postoperative first ambulation time and postoperative hospital stay length were compared between the two groups.RESULTS:Compared with group A,the VAS score of group B decreased significantly at 48 h after operation (P < 0.05).The postoperative anal exhaust time in group B was significantly shorter than that of group A (P < 0.05).There was no significant difference between the two groups with regards to remifentanil consumption,postoperative feeding time,postoperative first ambulation time and postoperative hospital stay (all P > 0.05).CONCLUSION:TEAS can promote the recovery of postoperative gastrointestinal function and reduce the pain intensity 48 h after surgery,thus satisfying the need of early postoperative analgesia. | Huang Wei Yu Tingyu Long Wenfei Xiao Jianbin Zhao Gaofeng | 2019 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2019,39,3: | 14 |
| 10 | Haze insights and mitigation in China: An overview显示文摘The present article provides an overview of the chemical and physical features of haze in China, focusing on the relationship between haze and atmospheric fine particles, and the formation mechanism of haze. It also summarizes several of control technologies and strategies to mitigate the occurrence of haze. The development of instruments and the analysis of measurements of ambient particles and precursor concentrations have provided important information about haze formation. Indeed, the use of new instruments has greatly facilitated current haze research in China. Examples of insightful results include the relationship between fine particles and haze, the chemical compositions and sources of particles, the impacts of the aging process on haze formation, and the application of technologies that control the formation of haze. | 11 | Investigation on Thermal Aging and Scaling of NBR in Alkaline Solution显示文摘The thermal aging and scaling tests of Butadi-ene-acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) samples in alkaline solution were done, and after the tests, the surface contact angle of samples was measured and the sample surface was analyzed by infrared spec-troscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scan-ning electron microscopy (SEM). The test results shows that after the NBR samples were dipped in pH 11, 70 ℃ alkaline solution for 215 d, many microcracks were observed on the surface and a lot of small sized scales existed near the cracks; element constitu-ents of scale adhering on the surface were: Ca, Fe and Al, of which Ca was from saturated CaCO3, Fe was from rust scale and Al was from Al2O3 ceramic existing also in the test environment; IR and XPS inspection indicate that there were outgrowths of carboxy group, acyloxy group, hydroxyl group, CaO and Ca3Si3O9, which showed that oxidation degradation and hydrolyzation happened on NBR and the scale appeared on the samples' surfaces. | 12 | Microbiologically influenced corrosion behavior of S32654 super austenitic stainless steel in the presence of marine Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm显示文摘S32654 super austenitic stainless steel(SASS) is widely used in highly corrosive environments. However,its microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) behavior has not been reported yet. In this study, the corrosion behavior of S32654 SASS caused by a corrosive marine bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated using electrochemical measurements and surface analysis techniques. It was found that P. aeruginosa biofilm accelerated the corrosion rate of S325654 SASS, which was demonstrated by a negative shift of the open circuit potential(EOCP), a decrease of polarization resistance and an increase of corrosion current density in the culture medium. The largest pit depth of the coupons exposed in the P.aeruginosa broth for 14 days was 2.83 m, much deeper than that of the control(1.33 m) in the abiotic culture medium. | 13 | DDIT4 promotes gastric cancer proliferation and tumorigenesis through the p53 and MAPK pathways显示文摘Background:Gastric cancer(GC)is one of the most common malignancies worldwide,particularly in China.DNA damage-inducible transcript 4(DDIT4)is a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor and is induced by various cellular stresses;however,its critical role in GC remains poorly understood.The present study aimed to investigate the poten-tial relationship and the underlying mechanism between DDIT4 and GC development.Methods:We used western blotting,real-time polymerase chain reaction,and immunohistochemical or immunoflu-orescence to determine DDIT4 expression in GC cells and tissues.High-content screening,cell counting kit-8 assays,colony formation,and in vivo tumorigenesis assays were performed to evaluate cell proliferation.Flow cytometry was used to investigate cell apoptosis and cell cycle distribution.Results:DDIT4 was upregulated in GC cells and tissue.Furthermore,downregulating DDIT4 in GC cells inhibited proliferation both in vitro and in vivo and increased 5-fluorouracil-induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.In contrast,ectopic expression of DDIT4 in normal gastric epithelial cells promoted proliferation and attenuated chemosensitivity.Further analysis indicated that the mitogen-activated protein kinase and p53 signaling pathways were involved in the suppression of proliferation,and increased chemosensitivity upon DDIT4 downregulation.Conclusion:DDIT4 promotes GC proliferation and tumorigenesis,providing new insights into the role of DDIT4 in the tumorigenesis of human GC. | Feng Du Lina Sun Yi Chu Tingyu Li Chao Lei Xin Wang Mingzuo Jiang Yali Min Yuanyuan Lu Xiaodi Zhao Yongzhan Nie Daiming Fan | 2018 | Cancer Communications2018,38,1: | 10 |
| 14 | Effects of folic acid on epithelial apoptosis and expression of Bcl-2 and p53 in premalignant gastric lesions显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effects of folic acid on epithelial apoptosis and expression of Bcl-2 and p53 in the tissues of premalignant gastric lesions.METHODS: Thirty-eight patients, with premalignant gastric lesions including 18 colonic-type intestinal metaplasia(IM)and 20 mild or moderate dysplasia, were randomly divided into a treatment group (n = 19) receiving folic acid 10 mg thrice daily and a control group (n = 19) receiving sucralfate 1 000 mg thrice daily for 3 mo. All patients undervvent endoscopies and four biopsies were taken prior to treatment and repeated after concluding therapy.Folate concentrations in gastric mucosa were measured with chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. Epithelial apoptosis and the expression of Bcl-2 and p53 protein in gastric mucosa were detected with flow cytometric assay.RESULTS: The mean of folate concentration in gastric mucosa was 9.03±3.37 μg/g wet wt in the folic acid treatment group, which was significantly higher than 6.83±3.02 μg/g wet wt in the control group. Both the epithelial apoptosis rate and the tumor suppressor p53expression in gastric mucosa significantly increased after folic acid treatment. | 16 | Prognostic value and nomograms of proximal margin distance in gastric cancer with radical distal gastrectomy显示文摘Objective:The proximal margin(PM)distance for distal gastrectomy(DG)of gastric cancer(GC)remains controversial.This study investigated the prognostic value of PM distance for survival outcomes,and aimed to combine clinicopathologic variables associated with survival outcomes after DG with different PM distance for GC into a prediction nomogram.Methods:Patients who underwent radical DG from June 2004 to June 2014 at Department of General Surgery,Nanfang Hospital,Southern Medical University were included.The first endpoints of the prognostic value of PM distance(assessed in 0.5 cm increments)for disease-free survival(DFS)and overall survival(OS)were assessed.Multivariate analysis by Cox proportional hazards regression was performed using the training set,and the nomogram was constructed,patients were chronologically assigned to the training set for dates from June 1,2004 to January 30,2012(n=493)and to the validation set from February 1,2012 to June 30,2014(n=211).Results:Among 704 patients with p TNM stage I,p TNM stage II,T1-2,T3-4,N0,differentiated type,tumor size≤5.0 cm,a PM of(2.1-5.0)cm vs.PM≤2.0 cm showed a statistically significant difference in DFS and OS,while a PM>5.0 cm was not associated with any further improvement in DFS and OS vs.a PM of 2.1-5.0 cm.In patients with p TNM stage III,N1,N2-3,undifferentiated type,tumor size>5.0 cm,the PM distance was not significantly correlated with DFS and OS between patients with a PM of(2.1-5.0)cm and a PM≤2 cm,or between patients with a PM>5.0 cm and a PM of(2.1-5.0)cm,so there were no significant differences across the three PM groups.In the training set,the C-indexes of DFS and OS,were 0.721 and 0.735,respectively,and in the validation set,the C-indexes of DFS and OS,were 0.752 and 0.751,respectively.Conclusions:It is necessary to obtain not less than 2.0 cm of PM distance in early-stage disease,while PM distance was not associated with long-term survival in later and more aggressive stages of disease because more advanced GC is a systemic disease.Different types of patients should be considered for removal of an individualized PM distance intra-operatively.We developed a universally applicable prediction model for accurately determining the 1-year,3-year and 5-year DFS and OS of GC patients according to their preoperative clinicopathologic characteristics and PM distance. | Jun Luo Yuming Jiang Xinhua Chen Yuehong Chen Jhang Lopsang Gurung Tingyu Mou Liying Zhao Guoqing Lyu Tuanjie Li Guoxin Li Jiang Yu | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2020,32,2: | 8 |
| 17 | Adsorption and desorption of SO_2, NO and chlorobenzene on activated carbon显示文摘Activated carbon(AC) is very effective for multi-pollutant removal; however, the complicated components in flue gas can influence each other's adsorption. A series of adsorption experiments for multicomponents, including SO_2, NO, chlorobenzene and H2 O,on AC were performed in a fixed-bed reactor. For single-component adsorption, the adsorption amount for chlorobenzene was larger than for SO_2 and NO on the AC. In the multi-component atmosphere, the adsorption amount decreased by 27.6% for chlorobenzene and decreased by 95.6% for NO, whereas it increased by a factor of two for SO_2,demonstrating that a complex atmosphere is unfavorable for chlorobenzene adsorption and inhibits NO adsorption. In contrast, it is very beneficial for SO_2 adsorption. The temperature-programmed desorption(TPD) results indicated that the binding strength between the gas adsorbates and the AC follows the order of SO_2> chlorobenzene > NO. The adsorption amount is independent of the binding strength. The presence of H2 O enhanced the component effects, while it weakened the binding force between the gas adsorbates and the AC. AC oxygen functional groups were analyzed using TPD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) measurements. The results reveal the reason why the chlorobenzene adsorption is less affected by the presence of other components. Lactone groups partly transform into carbonyl and quinone groups after chlorobenzene desorption. | 18 | Gas-phase and particle-phase PCDD/F congener distributions in the flue gas from an iron ore sintering plant显示文摘The activated carbon injection-circulating fluidized bed(ACI-CFB)-bag filter coupling technique was studied in an iron ore sintering plant. For comparison, the removal efficiencies under the conditions without or with ACI technology were both evaluated. It was found that the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofuran(PCDD/F) removal efficiency for total international toxic equivalence quantity(I-TEQ) concentration was improved from 91.61% to 97.36% when ACI was employed, revealing that ACI was very conducive to further controlling the PCDD/F emissions. Detailed congener distributions of PCDD/Fs in the gas-phase and particle-phase of the Inlet and Outlet samples were determined. | 20 | Temporal and spatial variations in hydrogeochemistry of cave percolation water and their implications for four caves in Guizhou, China显示文摘Soil water and cave drip water from four cave systems in Guizhou, Southwest China, were monitored and sampled monthly from April 2003 to May 2004 to understand spatio-temporal variations in hydro-geochemistry of cave percolation water. The results indicated that among the 5 drip water sites from the Liangfeng Cave (LFC), there were no significant differences among the hydro-geochemical parameters. In the Xiniu Cave (XNC), the drip rates were variable and responded quickly to precipitation events in the 3# (No. 3) drip site with variable water head; both bulk and variation in drip rates were smaller in the 2# with constant water head. However, in the Qixing Cave (QXC) and Jiangjun Cave (JJC), drip rates, concentrations of major ions and saturation index for calcite (SI C ) were smaller, and Mg/Ca ratios in Group I (1#, 2#, 6#, 7# and 8# in the QXC; 2# and 3# in the JJC) were larger than those in Group II (3#, 4#, 5# and 9# in the QXC; 1# and 4# in the JJC). These differences might be the result of different hydrogeological processes above the caves, which are divided into five categories based on hydro-geochemistry data.
