| 1 | Enteral nutrition and immune modulation of acute pancreatitis显示文摘Enteral nutrition has been strongly recommended by major scientific societies for the nutritional management of patients with acute pancreatitis.Providing severe acute pancreatitis patients with enteral nutrition within the first 24-48 h of hospital admission can help improve outcomes compared to parenteral nutrition and no feeding.New research is focusing in on when and what to feed to best improve outcomes for acute pancreatitis patients.Early enteral nutrition have the potential to modulate the immune responses.Despite this consistent evidence of early enteral nutrition in patients with acute pancreatitis,clinical practice continues to vary due to individual clinician preference.Achieving the immune modulating effects of enteral nutrition heavily depend on proper placement of the feeding tube and managing any tube feeding associated complications.The current article reviews the immune modulating effects of enteral nutrition and pro-and prebiotics and suggests some practical tools that help improve the patient adherence and tolerance to the tube feeding.Proper selection of the type of the tube,close monitoring of the tube for its placement,patency and securing its proper placement and routine checking the gastric residual volume could all help improve the outcome.Using peptide-based and high medium chaintriglycerides feeding formulas help improving feeding tolerance. | Refaat A Hegazi Tiffany De Witt | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,43: | 24 |
| 2 | Anti-inflammatory mechanisms of the novel cytokine interleukin-38 in allergic asthma显示文摘We elucidated the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of IL-38 in allergic asthma.Human bronchial epithelial cells and eosinophils were cocultured upon stimulation with the viral RLR ligand poly(I:C)/LyoVec or infection-related cytokine TNF-αto induce expression of cytokines/chemokines/adhesion molecules.House dust mite(HDM)-induced allergic asthma and humanized allergic asthma NOD/SCID murine models were established to assess anti-inflammatory mechanisms in vivo.IL-38 significantly inhibited induced proinflammatory IL-6,IL-1β,CCL5,and CXCL10 production,and antiviral interferon-βand intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression in the coculture system.Mass cytometry and RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that IL-38 could antagonize the activation of the intracellular STAT1,STAT3,p38 MAPK,ERK1/2,and NF-κB pathways,and upregulate the expression of the host defense-related gene POU2AF1 and anti-allergic response gene RGS13.Intraperitoneal injection of IL-38 into HDM-induced allergic asthma mice could ameliorate airway hyperreactivity by decreasing the accumulation of eosinophils in the lungs and inhibiting the expression of the Th2-related cytokines IL-4,IL-5,and IL-13 in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF)and lung homogenates.Histological examination indicated lung inflammation was alleviated by reductions in cell infiltration and goblet cell hyperplasia,together with reduced Th2,Th17,and innate lymphoid type 2 cell numbers but increased proportions of regulatory T cells in the lungs,spleen,and lymph nodes.IL-38 administration suppressed airway hyperreactivity and asthma-related IL-4 and IL-5 expression in humanized mice,together with significantly decreased CCR3^(+) eosinophil numbers in the BALF and lungs,and a reduced percentage of human CD4^(+)CRTH2^(+)Th2 cells in the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes.Together,our results demonstrated the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of IL-38 and provided a basis for the development of a regulatory cytokine-based treatment for allergic asthma. | Xiaoyu Sun Tianheng Hou Edwin Cheung Tiffany Nga-Teng Iu Victor Wai-Hou Tam Ida Miu-Ting Chu Miranda Sin-Man Tsang Paul Kay-Sheung Chan Christopher Wai-Kei Lam Chun-Kwok Wong | 2020 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2020,17,6: | 22 |
| 3 | DCE-MRI in hepatocellular carcinoma-clinical and therapeutic image biomarker显示文摘Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(DCE-MRI)enables tumor vascular physiology to be assessed.Within the tumor tissue,contrast agents(gadolinium chelates)extravasate from intravascular into the extravascular extracellular space(EES),which results in a signal increase on T1-weighted MRI.The rate of contrast agents extravasation to EES in the tumor tissue is determined by vessel leakiness and blood flow.Thus,the signal measured on DCE-MRI represents a combination of permeability and perfusion.The semi-quantitative analysis is based on the calculation of heuristic parameters that can be extracted from signal intensity-time curves.These enhancing curves can also be deconvoluted by mathematical modeling to extract quantitative parameters that may reflect tumor perfusion,vascular volume,vessel permeability and angiogenesis.Because hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a hypervascular tumor,many emerging therapies focused on the inhibition of angiogenesis.DCE-MRI combined with a pharmacokinetic model allows us to produce highly reproducible and reliable parametric maps of quantitative parameters in HCC.Successful therapies change quantitative parameters of DCE-MRI,which may be used as early indicators of tumor response to anti-angiogenesis agents that modulate tumor vasculature.In the setting of clinical trials,DCE-MRI may provide relevant clinical information on the pharmacodynamic and biologic effects of novel drugs,monitor treatment response and predict survival outcome in HCC patients. | Bang-Bin Chen Tiffany Ting-Fang Shih | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,12: | 15 |

| 6 | Reflections on a Science and Technology Agenda for 21st Century Disaster Risk Reduction Based on the Scientific Content of the 2016 UNISDR Science and Technology Conference on the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–203显示文摘The first international conference for the post-2015 United Nations landmark agreements(Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, Sustainable Development Goals, and Paris Agreement on Climate Change) was held in January 2016 to discuss the role of science and technology in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030. The UNISDR Science and Technology Conference on the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 aimed to discuss and endorse plans that maximize science's contribution to reducing disaster risks and losses in the coming 15 years and bring together the diversity of stakeholders producing and using disaster risk reduction(DRR) science and technology. This article describes the evolution of the role of science and technology in the policy process building up to the Sendai Framework adoption that resulted in an unprecedented emphasis on science in the text agreed on by 187 United Nations member states in March 2015 and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in June 2015. Contributions assembled by the Conference Organizing Committee and teams including the conference concept notes and the conference discussions that involved a broad range of scientists and decision makers are summarized in this article. The conference emphasized how partnerships and networks can advance multidisciplinary research and bring together science, policy, and practice; how disaster risk is understood, and how risks are assessed and early warning systems are designed; what data, standards, and innovative practices would be needed to measure and report on risk reduction; what research and capacity gaps exist and how difficulties in creating and using science for effective DRR can be overcome. | 7 | Low-dose metformin treatment in the subacute phase improves the locomotor function of a mouse model of spinal cord injury显示文摘Metformin,a first-line drug for type-2 diabetes,has been shown to improve locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury.However,there are studies reporting no beneficial effect.Recently,we found that high dose of metformin(200 mg/kg,intraperitoneal)and acute phase administration(immediately after injury)led to increased mortality and limited locomotor function recovery.Consequently,we used a lower dose(100 mg/kg,i.p.)metformin in mice,and compared the effect of immediate administration after spinal cord injury(acute phase)with that of administration at 3 days post-injury(subacute phase).Our data showed that metformin treatment starting at the subacute phase significantly improved mouse locomotor function evaluated by Basso Mouse Scale(BMS)scoring.Immunohistochemical studies also revealed significant inhibitions of microglia/macrophage activation and astrogliosis at the lesion site.Furthermore,metformin treatment at the subacute phase reduced neutrophil infiltration.These changes were in parallel with the increased survival rate of spinal neurons in animals treated with metformin.These findings suggest that low-dose metformin treatment for subacute spinal cord injury can effectively improve the functional recovery possibly through anti-inflammation and neuroprotection.This study was approved by the Institute Animal Care and Use Committee at the University of Texas Medical Branch(approval No.1008041C)in 2010. | Wen-Ye Song Han Ding Tiffany Dunn Jun-Ling Gao Javier Allende Labastida Caitlin Schlagal Guang-Zhi Ning Shi-Qing Feng Ping Wu | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,11: | 12 |

| 9 | 亚热带竹林挥发性有机物排放的模拟显示文摘2012年7月至2013年1月,采用松弛涡度积累(Relaxed Eddy Accumulation)技术在我国浙江省亚热带竹林测量了挥发性有机物(BVOC)冠层尺度的排放通量,同步测量了气象参数、太阳辐射(总辐射、直接辐射、光合有效辐射PAR)。利用PAR能量平衡原理,建立了冠层尺度异戊二烯和单萜烯排放的经验模式,经验模式对于日变化、季节变化有较好的模拟。采用不同方法对经验模式进行检验,一般而言,BVOC的模拟值高于测量值。经验模式与MEGANv2.1全球生物排放模式对BVOC排放有比较一致的模拟结果,标准状况下(温度t=30℃、PAR=1 500μmol·m^(-2)·s^(-1)排放因子较接近(异戊二烯分别为4.00和3.60 mg·m^(-2)·h^(-1),单萜烯分别为0.12和0.16 mg·m^(-2)·h^(-1))。经验模式的计算结果表明:竹林BVOC排放主要集中于夏季(7-9月)且以异戊二烯为主(占BVOC排放的87.3%~95.8%)。利用经验模式计算了BVOC排放对各个因子(PAR、水汽、S/Q-散射因子,散射辐射/总辐射)变化的敏感性:当各个因子增加率大于40%时,异戊二烯对PAR的变化最敏感,其次是水汽因子,再次是S/Q;单萜烯对S/Q的变化最敏感,其次是水汽因子,再次是PAR;单萜烯比异戊二烯对S/Q的变化更敏感;异戊二烯和单萜烯对各因子变化的响应是非线性的。冠层尺度上BVOC的排放量与卫星测量的HCHO柱浓度(molec·cm^(-1))之间有良好的线性关系:异戊二烯排放量(mg·m^(-2)·h^(-1))=3.93×10^(-16)HCHO-2.81,单萜烯排放量(mg·m^(-2)·h^(-1))=1.24×10^(-17)HCHO-0.05。对比我国不同生态系统实测的排放通量、排放因子,异戊二烯排放以亚热带竹林最高,其次为温带森林,草地最低;单萜烯排放以温带森林最高,亚热带竹林次之,草地最低。 | 白建辉 DUHL TIFFANY 余树全 王彬 郝楠 | 2015 | 生态环境学报2015,24,12: | 9 |

| 12 | Nasal metastases from renal cell carcinoma are associated with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center poor-prognosis classification显示文摘Unusual sites of metastases are recognized in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, the prognostic implications of these sites are not well understood. We used the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) risk classification for metastatic RCC to evaluate 912 consecutive patients with RCC managed at the Singapore General Hospital between 1990 and 2009. Among these patients, 301 had metastases either at diagnosis or during the course of illness. Nasal metastases, all arising from clear cell RCC, were identified histologically in 4 patients (1.3% of those with metastasis). All 4 patients were classified as MSKCC poor prognosis by current risk criteria. Nasal metastases were significantly associated with lung and bone metastases. The frequency of nasal metastases in patients with metastatic RCC is about 1%, occurring predominantly in patients with clear cell RCC. | 15 | Identification of Ca2+ signaling components in neural stem/progenitor cells during differentiation into neurons and glia in intact and dissociated zebrafish neurospheres显示文摘The development of the CNS in vertebrate embryos involves the generation of different sub-types of neurons and glia in a complex but highly-ordered spatio-temporal manner. Zebrafish are commonly used for exploring the development, plasticity and regeneration of the CNS, and the recent development of reliable protocols for isolating and culturing neural stem/progenitor cells(NSCs/NPCs) from the brain of adult fish now enables the exploration of mechanisms underlying the induction/specification/differentiation of these cells. Here, we refined a protocol to generate proliferating and differentiating neurospheres from the entire brain of adult zebrafish. We demonstrated via RT-qPCR that some isoforms of ip3 r, ryr and stim are upregulated/downregulated significantly in differentiating neurospheres, and via immunolabelling that 1,4,5-inositol trisphosphate receptor(IP3 R) type-1 and ryanodine receptor(RyR) type-2 are differentially expressed in cells with neuron-or radial glial-like properties. Furthermore, ATP but not caffeine(IP3 R and RyR agonists, respectively), induced the generation of Ca^(2+) transients in cells exhibiting neuron-or glial-like morphology. These results indicate the differential expression of components of the Ca^(2+) -signaling toolkit in proliferating and differentiating cells. Previous studies suggested that similar populations of Caucasian and Japanese patients have similar genotype or phenotype characteristics. In this comprehensive study of East Asian patients, we investigated the genetic and clinical characteristics of patients with VHL syndrome.Methods: To create a registry of clinical characteristics and mutations reported in East Asian patients with VHL syndrome, we conducted a comprehensive review of English language and non?English language articles identi?fied through a literature search. Publications in Japanese or Chinese language were read by native speakers of the language, who then performed the data extraction.Results: Of 237 East Asian patients with VHL syndrome, 154 unique kindreds were identified for analysis. Analyzed by kindred, missense mutations were the most common(40.9%, 63/154), followed by large/complete deletions(32.5%, 50/154) and nonsense mutations(11.7%, 18/154). Compared with a previously reported study of both East Asian and non?East Asian patients, we found several key differences. First, missense and frameshift mutations in the VHL gene occurred less commonly in our population of East Asian patients(40.9% vs. 52.0%; P = 0.012 and 8.4% vs. 13.0%; P < 0.001, respectively). Second, large/complete deletions were more common in our population of East Asian patients(32.5% vs. 10.5%; P < 0.001). Third, phenotypically, we observed that, in our population of East Asian patients with VHL syndrome, the incidence of retinal capillary hemangioblastoma was lower, whereas the incidence of renal cell carcinoma was higher.Conclusions: Evidence suggests that the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of East Asian patients with VHL syndrome differ from other populations. | 19 | Clinical factors affecting rejection rates in liver transplantation显示文摘BACKGROUND: With improvements in survival, liver transplant recipients now suffer more morbidity from long-term immunosuppression. Considerations were given to develop individualized immunosuppression based on their risk of rejection. METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 788 liver transplants performed during the period from October 1991 to December 2011 to study the relationship between acute cellular rejection(ACR) and various clinical factors. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that older age(P=0.04,OR=0.982), chronic hepatitis B virus infection(P=0.005, OR=0.574), living donor liver transplantation(P=0.02, OR=0.648) and use of interleukin-2 receptor antagonist on induction(P<0.001, OR=0.401) were associated with fewer ACRs. Patients with fulminant liver failure(P=0.004, OR=4.05) were more likely to develop moderate to severe grade ACR. CONCLUSIONS: Liver transplant recipients with older age,chronic hepatitis B virus infection, living donor liver transplantation and use of interleukin-2 receptor antagonist on induction have fewer ACR.
