Optimal Control of Nonlinear Inverted Pendulum System Using PID Controller and LQR: Performance Analysis Without and With Disturbance Input显示文摘Linear quadratic regulator(LQR) and proportional-integral-derivative(PID) control methods, which are generally used for control of linear dynamical systems, are used in this paper to control the nonlinear dynamical system. LQR is one of the optimal control techniques, which takes into account the states of the dynamical system and control input to make the optimal control decisions. The nonlinear system states are fed to LQR which is designed using a linear state-space model. This is simple as well as robust. The inverted pendulum, a highly nonlinear unstable system, is used as a benchmark for implementing the control methods. Here the control objective is to control the system such that the cart reaches a desired position and the inverted pendulum stabilizes in the upright position. In this paper, the modeling and simulation for optimal control design of nonlinear inverted pendulum-cart dynamic system using PID controller and LQR have been presented for both cases of without and with disturbance input. The Matlab-Simulink models have been developed for simulation and performance analysis of the control schemes. The simulation results justify the comparative advantage of LQR control method. | Lal Bahadur Prasad Barjeev Tyagi Hari Om Gupta | 2014 | International Journal of Automation and computing2014,11,6: | 32

Critical review of EPS production, synthesis and composition for sludge flocculation显示文摘Extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) produced by microorganisms represent biological macromolecules with unfathomable potentials and they are required to be explored further for their potential application as a bioflocculant in various wastewater sludge treatment. Although several studies already exist on biosynthetic pathways of different classical biopolymers like alginate and xanthan, no dedicated studies are available for EPS in sludge. This review highlights the EPS composition, functionality, and biodegradability for its potential use as a carbon source for production of other metabolites. Furthermore, the effect of various extraction methods(physical and chemical) on compositional, structural, physical and functional properties of microbial EPS has been addressed. The vital knowledge of the effect of extraction method on various important attributes of EPS can help to choose the suitable extraction method depending upon the intended use of EPS. The possible use of different molecular biological techniques for enhanced production of desired EPS was summarized. | Klai Nouha Ram Saurabh Kumar Sellamuthu Balasubramanian Rajeshwar Dayal Tyagi | 2018 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2018,30,4: | 19
Homocysteine mediates transcriptional changes of the inflammatory pathway signature genes in human retinal pigment epithelial cells显示文摘AIM:To test whether homocysteine(Hcy) can influence the transcriptional profile, we hypothesized that Hcy can lead to the induction of proinflammatory molecules in the retinal cells of aging people.METHODS:An unbiased in vitro inflammatory pathway focused study was designed employing retinal pigment epithelial(RPE) cell line, ARPE-19. Cells were cultured in the presence or absence of Hcy to capture target genes' expression profile. Three different concentrations of Hcy were added in the culture medium of confluent monolayers. c RNAs were made from the isolated total RNAs and the labeled c RNA probes were hybridized to microarrays specific for human disease pathway inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and their receptor gene micro-array panels as per manufacture's recommendations. Two Hcy up-regulated molecules:IL6 and CEBPB were further validated via Western blot analysis. Hcy's effect on ARPE-19 cellular morphology and genomic DNA integrity were also evaluated.RESULTS:Gene microarray analyses of RPE cells in response to Hcy treatment revealed alterations in the expressions of several inflammatory gene transcripts such as CCL5, CEBPB, IL13RA2, IL15 RA, IL6, IL8 and CXCL3 that were up-regulated. The transcripts for C3, CCL2, IL11 RA and IL18 genes exhibited down-regulation. The IL6 and CEBPB expressions were subsequently validated at the protein levels. Treatment of the retinal cells with increasing Hcy concentration influenced their density in culture however their morphology and DNA integrity remained unaffected. CONCLUSION:These findings suggest that Hcy can potentially mediate the expression of chemokines, cytokines and interleukins receptors in the retinal cells without having any debilitating effects on their morphology and the genomic DNA integrity. | Mahavir Singh Suresh C Tyagi | 2017 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,5: | 10
A Modified Plate Assay for Rapid Screening of Potassium-Solubilizing Bacteria显示文摘The utility of microorganisms for solubilizing the unavailable forms of potassium(K) from soil has led to renewed interest in fabrication of rapid and sensitive plate assays for their isolation and screening. The present study developed a modified plate assay and compared it with previously reported methods for the isolation and screening of K-solubilizing bacteria. The newly developed plate assay is based on improved visualization of halo zone formation around the colonies on agar plates, through inclusion of an acid-base indicator dye, bromothymol blue(BTB), to modify the previously reported Aleksandrov medium. The halo zone exhibited a significant correlation(R = 0.939) with K released in liquid medium. The visualization of potential K solubilizers was improved using this method, which would help in detection of weak/non-acid producers based on secretion of organic acids in the medium. Organic acids in plate diffuse radially and form halo zones in response to reaction with the acid-base indicator dye BTB. Furthermore, K solubilization on plates with this method can be observed within 48–72 h, against the incubation time of 4–5 d needed in the earlier method. Therefore, the newly developed protocol for the plate assay was time saving, more sensitive, and beneficial in comparison to the previously reported Aleksandrov plate assay. | Mahendra Vikram Singh RAJAWAT Surender SINGH Satya Prakash TYAGI Anil Kumar SAXENA | 2016 | Pedosphere2016,26,5: | 6
Analysis of soil moisture variation by forest cover structure in lower western Himalayas, India显示文摘Soil moisture affects various hydrological processes, including evapotranspiration, infiltration, and runoff. Forested areas in the lower western Himalaya in India constitute the headwater catchments for many hill streams and have experienced degradation in forest cover due to grazing, deforestation and other human activities. This change in forest cover is likely to alter the soil moisture regime and, consequently, flow regimes in streams. The effect of change in forest cover on soil moisture regimes of this dry region has not been studied through long term field observations. We monitored soil matric potentials in two small watersheds in the lower western Himalaya of India. The watersheds consisted of homogeneous land covers of moderately dense oak forest and moderately degraded mixed oak forest. Observations were recorded at three sites at three depths in each watershed at fortnightly intervals for a period of three years. The soil moisture contents derived from soil potential measurements were analyzed to understand the spatial, temporal and profile variations under the two structures of forest cover. The analysis revealed large variations in soil moisture storage at different sites and depths and also during different seasons in each watershed. Mean soil moisture storage during monsoon, winter and summer seasons was higher under dense forest than under degraded forest. Highest soil moisture content occurred at shallow soil profiles, decreasing with depth in both watersheds. A high positive correlation was found between tree density and soil moisture content. Mean soil moisture content over the entire study period was higher under dense forest than under degraded forest. This indicated a potential for soil water storage under well managed oak forest. Because soil water storage is vital for sustenance of low flows, attention is needed on the management of oak forests in the Himalayan region. | J. V. Tyagi Nuzhat Qazi S. P. Rai M. P. | 9 | Pathology of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease in the young Indian population显示文摘Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) is of great concern in young adults because of its potential to cause great incapacitation. This arena of cardiology has gained importance in South Asian countries, particularly India due to increased prevalence that is related to traditional risk factors, altered life styles and inherent risk factors. In this study,we sought to evaluate,at autopsy, the pathology of atherosclerotic CAD in young patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD).A 10-year retrospective autopsy-based study was carried out in a large tertiary-care centre and patients aged ≤45 years with IHD were selected.Out of 545 autopsied cases of IHD,95 patients (17.4%) were young.Among these 95 patients,84 (88.4%) had IHD related to atherosclerotic CAD;the youngest patient was 18years old.Predictably there was sole involvement of left anterior descending artery and the presence of fibrous plaques.Irrespective of the plaque morphology, the commonest complication was thrombosis produced by plaque erosion seen in 36.9% of patients.Acute coronary insufficiency was noted in 52 patients (61.9%),while healed infarctions were surprisingly noted in 28 patients (33.3%).Screening for IHD in the young population may help to improve prognosis by detecting subclinical disease, although more studies are necessary to establish reference limits for this young population.Additional research must also focus on treatment concerns that are specific to young patients. | Pradeep Vaideeswar Shashank Tyagi Saranya Singaravel | 2019 | Forensic Sciences Research2019,4,3: | 4
Evaluation of anti-apoptotic activity of different dietary antioxidants in renal cell carcinoma against hydrogen peroxide显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the anti-apoptotic and radical scavenging activities of dietary phenolics, namely ascorbic acid,a-tocopherol acetate, citric acid, salicylic acid, and estimate H_2O_2induced apoptosis in renal cell carcinoma cells. Methods:The intracellular antioxidant potency of antioxidants was investigated.H_2O-2-induced apoptosis in RCC-26 was assayed with the following parameters:cell viability(%apoptosis),nucleosomal damage and DNA fragmentation, bcl-2 levels and flow cytometery analysis(ROS production evaluation). Results:Ine anticancer properties of antioxidants such as ascorbic acid,a- tocopherol acetate, citric acid, salicylic acid with perdurable responses were investigated. It was observed that these antioxidants had protective effect(anti-apoptotic activity) against hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2) in renal cell carcinoma(RCC-26) cell line. Conclusions:This study reveals and proves the anticancer properties. However,in cancer cell lines anti-apoptotic activity can indirectly reflect the cancer promoter activity through radicals scavenging, and significantly protect nucleus and bcl-2. | Garg Neeraj K Mangal Sharad Sahu Tejram Mehta Abhinav Vyas Suresh P Tyagi Rajeev K | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,1: | 4
A high methionine, low folate and vitamin B_6/B_(12) containing diet can be associated with memory loss by epigenetic silencing of netrin-1显示文摘Memory-epigenetics which is the loss of memory due to epigenetic modifications can be due to the silencing of genes involved in cognitive functions and this is the basis of the current study. We hypothesize that a diet containing high methionine and low vitamins can lead to memory impairment by increasing global DNA methylation and therefore, silencing the netrin-1 gene, which encodes the glycoprotein involved in neurogenesis, axonal guidance and maintenance of the synaptic plasticity.Wild type(C57 BL/6 J) mice were fed with a diet containing excess methionine(1.2%),low-folate(0.08 mg/kg),vitamin B_6(0.01 mg/kg),and B_(12)(10.4 mg/kg) for 6 weeks.Mice were examined weekly for the long-term memory function, using a passive avoidance test, which determined loss of fear-motivated long-term memory starting from the fourth week of diet.Similarly,an increase in brain %5-methyl cytosine was observed starting from the 4 th week of diet in mice.Mice fed with a high methionine, low folate and vitamins containing diet showed a decrease in netrin-1 protein expression and an increase in netrin-1 gene promotor methylation,as determined by methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme-polymerase chain reaction analysis. The increase in methylation of netrin-1 gene was validated by high-resolution melting and sequencing analysis.Furthermore, the association of netrin-1 with memory was established by administering netrin that considerably restored long-term fear motivated memory.Taken together, these results suggest that a diet rich in methionine and lacking in folate and vitamin B_6/B_(12) can induce defects in learning and memory.Furthermore, the data indicates that decrease in netrin-1 expression due to hyper-methylation of its gene can be associated with memory loss. The animal procedures were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee,University of Louisville,USA(No.A3586-01) on February 2,2018. | Anuradha Kalani Pankaj Chaturvedi Komal Kalani Pradip K.Kamat Poonam Chaturvedi Neetu Tyagi | 2019 | Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,7: | 4
Effect of micro-environmental factors on natural regeneration of Sal (Shorea robusta)显示文摘Micro-environmental factors viz., soil moisture and light in- tensity are important factors that affect natural regeneration in forests. These factors vary spatially depending on the overhead canopy density of the forest. The present study focused on studying the effect of variation of soil moisture and light intensity on natural regeneration of sal species (Shorea robusta) under different micro-environments due to overhead canopy of varying forest density. Experimental plots of 40m× 40m size were laid under different overhead canopy densities in a small sal for- ested watershed in the foot hills of Himalayas in Nainital District of Uttarakhand State, India. The plots were monitored on a long term basis for soil moisture at multi depths, light intensity and natural regeneration of sal. The results of the study revealed that the natural regeneration was highest under C1 (up to-0.30) canopy followed by C2 (0.30 0.50), and C3 (0.50 0.70) canopies. The C3 canopy showed the dying back of sal shoots over 4 years of study. The highest R 2 value of linear regression between incremental score of plot regeneration and average soil moisture content was obtained as 0.156 for average soil moisture content during non-monsoon months at 100 cm depth. The R 2 value between incre- mental score of plot regeneration and annual average light intensity was obtained as 0.688 which indicated that the regeneration is largely de- pendent on the light intensity conditions during the year. The multiple linear regression analysis between the incremental score of regeneration and the average light intensity and average soil moisture content revealed that that about 80% of variation in regeneration is explained by both the factors. | J. | 13 | 导致成人与儿童患者30天脑室腹腔分流失败的原因分析(英文)显示文摘OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive benchmark of 30-day ventriculoperitoneal(VP)shunt failure rates for a single institution over a 5-year study period for both adult and pediatric patients,to compare this with the results in previously published literature, and to establish factors associated with shunt failure.METHODS A retrospective database search was undertaken to identify all VP shunt operations performed in a single, regional neurosurgical unit during a 5-year period.Data were collected regarding patient age, sex, origin of hydrocephalus, and whether the shunt was a primary or secondary shunt.Operative notes were used to ascertain the type of valve inserted, which components of the shunt were adjusted/replaced(in revision cases),level of seniority of the most senior surgeon who participated in the operation, and number of surgeons involved in the operation.Where appropriate and where available, postoperative imaging was assessed for grade of shunt placement, using a recognized grading system.Univariate and multivariate models were used to establish factors associated with early(30-day)shunt failure.RESULTS Six hundred eighty-three VP shunt operations were performed,of which 321 were pediatric and 362 were adult. The median duration of postoperative follow-up for nonfailed shunts(excluding deaths)was 1263 days(range 525-2226 days). The pediatric 30-day shunt failure rates in the authors'institution were 8.8%for primary shunts and 23.4%for revisions. In adults, the 30-day shunt failure rates are 17.7%for primary shunts and 25.6%for revisions. In pediatric procedures, the number of surgeons involved in the operating theater was significantly associated with shunt failure rate.In adults, the origin of hydrocephalus was a statistically significant variable.Primary shunts lasted longer than revision shunts, irrespective of patient age.CONCLUSIONS A benchmark of 30-day failures is presented and is consistent with current national databases and previously published data by other groups. The number of surgeons involved in shunt operations and the origin of the patient's hydrocephalus should be described in future studies and should be controlled for in any prospective work. The choice of shunt valve was not a significant predictor of shunt failure. Most previous studies on shunts have concentrated on primary shunts, but the high rate of early shunt failure in revision cases(in both adults and children)is perhaps where future research efforts should be concentrated. | Anderson IA Saukila LF Robins JMW Akhunbay-Fudge CY Goodden JR Tyagi AK Phillips N Chumas PD | 2018 | 中华神经外科疾病研究杂志2018,17,3: | 3
A hypothesis for treating inflammation and oxidative stress with hydrogen sulfide during age-related macular degeneration显示文摘Age-related macular degeneration(AMD) is a leading cause of blindness and is becoming a global crisis since affected people will increase to 288 million by 2040.Genetics,age,diabetes,gender,obesity,hypertension,race,hyperopia,iris-color,smoking,sun-light and pyroptosis have varying roles in AMD,but oxidative stress-induced inflammation remains a significant driver of pathobiology.Eye is a unique organ as it contains a remarkable oxygengradient that generates reactive oxygen species(ROS) which upregulates inflammatory pathways.ROS becomes a source of functional and morphological impairments in retinal pigment epithelium(RPE),endothelial cells and retinal ganglion cells.Reports demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide(H_2S) acts as a signaling molecule and that it may treat ailments. Therefore,we propose a novel hypothesis that H_2S may restore homeostasis in the eyes thereby reducing damage caused by oxidative injury and inflammation.Since H_2S has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant because of its free-radicals' inhibition properties in addition to its beneficial effects in age-relatedconditions,therefore,patients may benefit from H_2S salubrious effects not only by minimizing their oxidant and inflammatory injuries to retina but also by lowering retinal glutamate excitotoxicity. | Akash K George Mahavir Singh Rubens Petit Homme Avisek Majumder Harpal S SANDhu Suresh C Tyagi | 2018 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2018,11,5: | 3
Golgi localization and dynamics of hyaluronan binding protein 1 (HABP1/p32/C1QBP) during the cell cycle显示文摘Hyaluronan binding protein 1 (HABP1) is a negatively charged multifunctional mammalian protein with a unique structural fold. Despite the fact that HABP1 possesses mitochondrial localization signal, it has also been localized to other cellular compartments. Using indirect immunofluorescence, we examined the sub-cellular localization of HABP1 and its dynamics during mitosis. We wanted to determine whether it distributes in any distinctive manner after mitotic nuclear envelope disassembly or is dispersed randomly throughout the cell. Our results reveal the golgi localization of HABP1 and demonstrate its complete dispersion throughout the cell during mitosis. This distinctive distribution pattern of HABP1 during mitosis resembles its ligand hyaluronan, suggesting that in concert with each other the two molecules play critical roles in this dynamic process. | Aniruddha SENGUPTA Bhaswati BANERJEE Rakesh K. | 17 | Antioxidant Machinery Related to Decreased MDA Generation by Thymus Algeriensis Essential Oil-induced Liver and Kidney Regeneration显示文摘Objective This study was conducted to determine the histopathological and biochemical effects of Thymus algeriensis essential oil(TEO) on hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2)-induced oxidative stress in liver and kidney tissues of rats. Methods Rats were treated in six groups and were exposed for 2 weeks to low(LD; 100 μmol/L) and high doses(HD;1 mmol/L) of H_2O_2 in the presence or absence of TEO(180 mg/kg). Liver and kidney atrophy was measured by using biochemical and histopathological assays. Results Our study demonstrated that H_2O_2 induced liver and kidney atrophy, as evidenced by the significant elevation of serum aminotransferase, urea, and creatinine levels compared with those in the control rats. Urea levels were estimated by evaluating the activity of serum urease that hydrolyzes urea into CO_2 and ammonia. However, TEO treatment significantly alleviated oxidative stress in the H_2O_2-induced liver and kidney toxicity model by reducing the levels of malondialdehyde concomitantly with marked elevations in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase, as well as decrease in glutathione activity. Conclusion Our data demonstrated that TEO protected against H_2O_2 toxicity by decreasing oxidant levels and DNA damage, as well as increasing antioxidant levels, indicating that TEO has a spectrum of antioxidant and DNA-protective properties. | Guesmi Fatma Amit K Tyagi Bellamine Houda Landoulsi Ahmed | 2016 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2016,29,9: | 3
WMO TYPHOON LANDFALL FORECAST DEMONSTRATION PROJECT(WMO-TLFDP) PROGRESS AND FUTURE PLANS显示文摘The 'WMO Typhoon Landfall Forecast Demonstration Project(TLFDP)' was started in May 2010 in conjunction with the start of the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The project was successful in terms of assisting the local forecasters in providing an efficient tropical cyclone(TC) forecast service for World Expo 2010, demonstrating the performance of the most up-to-date techniques in TC forecasting, and enhancing the ability of forecasters to effectively use products based on advanced TC forecasting techniques. The first phase was completed in December 2012 and the second phase was completed in December 2015. The third phase(TLFDP-III) started in 2016.During its first(2010-2012) and second(2013-2015) phases, TLFDP collected real-time TC forecast products from 15 Typhoon Forecast Product Providers(TFPPs). The products include deterministic track and intensity forecasts, ensemble track and intensity forecasts, deterministic wind radii forecasts, wind probability forecasts, and gridded model outputs. The products were disseminated through the project's website and the operational website of the Shanghai Typhoon Warning Center.TLFDP has made significant progress in TC forecast verification, including setting up the tools for both realtime and post-season TC forecast verification, developing and integrating several new verification techniques, carrying out a survey on the operational status of TC forecast verification in the western North Pacific region, and contributing to the WMO document 'Verification of tropical cyclone forecasts'. The post-season forecast verification was reported to the Session of the UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee since 2013. New consensus methods for TC track and intensity forecasts were also proposed either based on Ensemble Prediction Systems(EPSs) products or multiple deterministic NWP model products. Two training workshops on TC forecasting were organized by the TLFDP and held in Shanghai, China, in May 2010 and June 2012, respectively, and seven research fellowship projects were implemented as jointly supported by the UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee, Shanghai Typhoon Institute and Hong Kong Observatory. In its third phase(TLFDP-III, 2016-2018), the project will continue its effort on demonstration and evaluation of the newly developed forecasting techniques for TCs, and developing and documenting advanced guidance for the verification of TC forecasts, with special attention to TC intensity and precipitation. | Xiaotu Lei Hui Yu Guomin Chen Barbara Brown Sai Tick Chan Ajit Tyagi | 2016 | Tropical Cyclone Research and Review2016,5,3: | 2
