| 4 | Hurricane disturbances, tree diversity, and succession in North Carolina Piedmont forests, USA显示文摘Windthrow plays a critical role in maintaining species diversity in temperate forests. Do large-scale strong wind events(i.e., tropical cyclones, including hurricanes,typhoons and severe cyclonic storms) increase tree diversity in severely damaged forest areas? Do hurricanes(tropical cyclones that occurs in the Atlantic Ocean and northeastern Pacific Ocean) lead to altered relative abundance of shade-tolerant and shade-intolerant species? Did historic hurricanes alter the succession trajectory of the damaged forests? We used nearly 70-year tree demographic data to assess the effects of two major hurricanes on woody species diversity in Piedmont forests, North Carolina, USA. Species richness(S) and Shannon–Wiener's diversity index(H') were used to evaluate the changes in tree diversity. The changes in composition were assessed with Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling. The pre-hurricane successional phase can strongly influence both the damage severity and subsequent responses. Although there is often an immediate drop in diversity following a hurricane, understory tree diversity quickly increases to levels that exceed those prior to the disturbance. This leads to an increase in diversity in stands that were substantially damaged. Hurricanes significantly decrease the dominance of shade-intolerant canopy species while increasing preestablished, more shade-tolerant species. | 14 | Relationships between regulated DBPs and emerging DBPs of health concern in U.S. drinking water显示文摘A survey was conducted at eight U.S. drinking water plants, that spanned a wide range of water qualities and treatment/disinfection practices. Plants that treated heavily-wastewaterimpacted source waters had lower trihalomethane to dihaloacetonitrile ratios due to the presence of more organic nitrogen and HAN precursors. As the bromide to total organic carbon ratio increased, there was more bromine incorporation into DBPs. This has been shown in other studies for THMs and selected emerging DBPs(HANs), whereas this study examined bromine incorporation for a wider group of emerging DBPs(haloacetaldehydes, halonitromethanes). Moreover, bromine incorporation into the emerging DBPs was, in general, similar to that of the THMs. Epidemiology studies that show an association between adverse health effects and brominated THMs may be due to the formation of brominated emerging DBPs of heath concern. Plants with higher free chlorine contact times before ammonia addition to form chloramines had less iodinated DBP formation in chloraminated distribution systems, where there was more oxidation of the iodide to iodate(a sink for the iodide) by the chlorine. This has been shown in many bench-scale studies(primarily for iodinated THMs), but seldom in full-scale studies(where this study also showed the impact on total organic iodine. Collectively, the THMs, haloacetic acids, and emerging DBPs accounted for a significant portion of the TOCl, TOBr, and TOI;however, ~50% of the TOCl and TOBr is still unknown. | 18 | Effects of Histotripsy on Local Tumor Progression in an in vivo Orthotopic Rodent Liver Tumor Model显示文摘Objective and Impact Statement.This is the first longitudinal study investigating the effects of histotripsy on local tumor progression in an in vivo orthotopic,immunocompetent rat hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)model.Introduction.Histotripsy is the first noninvasive,nonionizing,nonthermal,mechanical ablation technique using ultrasound to generate acoustic cavitation to liquefy the target tissue into acellular debris with millimeter accuracy.Previously,histotripsy has demonstrated in vivo ablation of noncancerous liver tissue.Methods.N1-S1 HCC tumors were generated in the livers of immunocompetent rats(n=6,control;n=15,treatment).Real-time ultrasound-guided histotripsy was applied to ablate either 100%tumor volume+up to 2 mm margin(n=9,complete treatment)or 50-75%tumor volume(n=6,partial treatment)by delivering 1-2 cycle histotripsy pulses at 100 Hz PRF(pulse repetition frequency)with p−≥30 MPa using a custom 1 MHz transducer.Rats were monitored weekly using MRI(magnetic resonance imaging)for 3 months or until tumors reached~25 mm.Results.MRI revealed effective post-histotripsy reduction of tumor burden with near-complete resorption of the ablated tumor in 14/15(93.3%)treated rats.Histopathology showed<5 mm shrunken,non-tumoral,fibrous tissue at the treatment site at 3 months.Rats with increased tumor burden(3/6 control and 1 partial treatment)were euthanized early by 2-4 weeks.In 3 other controls,histology revealed fibrous tissue at original tumor site at 3 months.There was no evidence of histotripsy-induced off-target tissue injury.Conclusion.Complete and partial histotripsy ablation resulted in effective tumor removal for 14/15 rats,with no evidence of local tumor progression or recurrence. | Tejaswi Worlikar Mishal Mendiratta-Lala Eli Vlaisavljevich Ryan Hubbard Jiaqi Shi Timothy L.Hall Clifford S.Cho Fred T.Lee Joan Greve Zhen Xu | 2020 | Biomedical Engineering Frontiers2020，1，1： | 1 |
