| 2 | Different profile of cytokine synthesis according to the severity of acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the cellular synthetic ability of cytokines involved in pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions in patients with AP.METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with AP (16 severe,51 mild) and 10 controls were included in the study.Cultures of whole blood were performed in samples obtained within the first 72 h from the onset of pain.Serum levels of interleukins (IL) 6, 8, 10, and TNF-α were measured at baseline and in the supernatant of cultures with (functional reserve) or without stimulation with phytohemaglutinin.RESULTS: Basal levels of cytokines were significantly higher in patients with severe AP. A significant increase of all pro-inflammatory cytokines vs basal levels was observed in the supernatant after 24 h of whole blood cultures in patients, but not in controls. In contrast, IL-10 increased significantly in the supernatant of cultures only in patients with mild AP. Cells showed a statistically significant functional reserve for all IL in patients with mild, but only for pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with severe AP.CONCLUSION: A marked activation of immune system may be observed in patients with AP, being balanced between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients with mild but not severe AP. | 3 | Gut microbiota-related complications in cirrhosis显示文摘Gut microbiota plays an important role in cirrhosis. The liver is constantly challenged with commensal bacteria and their products arriving through the portal vein in the so-called gut-liver axis. Bacterial translocation from the intestinal lumen through the intestinal wall and to mesenteric lymph nodes is facilitated by intestinal bacterial overgrowth, impairment in the permeability of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and deficiencies in local host immune defences. Deranged clearance of endogenous bacteria from portal and systemic circulation turns the gut into the major source of bacterialrelated complications. Liver function may therefore be affected by alterations in the composition of the intestinal microbiota and a role for commensal flora has been evidenced in the pathogenesis of several complications arising in end-stage liver disease such as hepatic encephalopathy, splanchnic arterial vasodilatation and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. | 7 | Performance of geosynthetic cementitious composite mat and vetiver on soil erosion control显示文摘An understanding of how different land covers affect soil erosion caused by rainfall is necessary in mountainous areas.The land cover usually plays an important role in controlling landslide hazards associated with these terrains.This paper presents the results of a field experiment where several types of land covers were placed on a full-scale embankment as erosion control.An 8 m wide,21 m long,and 3 m high embankment with a 45°side-slope was built with lateric soil.The soil was compacted under a relative compaction of 70%to simulate a natural soil slope.Two sides of the embankment were divided into six land cover areas,with three different areas of bare soil,and one each of a geosynthetic cementitious composite mat(GCCM),vetiver grass,and a combination of GCCM and vegetation.Soil erosion and moisture levels were monitored for each land cover area during six natural rainfall events encountered over the experimental period.Field results were compared with a numerical simulation and empirical soil loss equation.The results revealed that the GCCM gave the best erosion control immediately after installation,but vetiver grass also exhibited good erosion control six months postconstruction. | Suched LIKITLERSUANG Kittikhun KOUNYOU Gayuh Aji PRASETYANING TIYAS | 2020 | Journal of Mountain Science2020，17，6： | 3 |
| 8 | Immunomodulating effects of antibiotics used in the prophylaxis of bacterial infections in advanced cirrhosis显示文摘The use of norfloxacin either as primary or secondary prophylaxis of bacterial infections in advanced cirrhosis has improved patient's survival. This may be explained not only due to a significant decrease in the number of infections, but also because of a direct immunomodulatory effect. Selective intestinal decontamination with norfloxacin reduces translocation of either viable bacteria or bacteria-driven products from the intestinal lumen. In addition, norfloxacin directly modulates the systemic inflammatory response. The proinflammatory cytokine profile secreted by neutrophils from these patients shows a close, significant, and inverse correlation with serum norfloxacin levels. Similar effects have been described with other quinolones in different clinical conditions. Although the underlying mechanisms are not well defined for most of the antibiotics, the pathways triggered for norfloxacin to induce such immunomodulatory effects involve the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and NF-κB and the up-regulation of heme-oxygenase 1 and IL-10 expression.
