| 1 | FoxO3a and disease progression显示文摘The Forkhead box O(FoxO) family has recently been highlighted as an important transcriptional regulator of crucial proteins associated with the many diverse functions of cells. So far, FoxO1, FoxO3 a, FoxO4 and FoxO6 proteins have been identified in humans. Although each FoxO family member has its own role, unlike the other FoxO families, FoxO3 a has been extensively studied because of its rather unique and pivotal regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, metabolism, stress management and longevity. FoxO3 a alteration is closely linked to the progression of several types of cancers, fibrosis and other types of diseases. In this review, we will examine the function of FoxO3 a in disease progression and also explore FoxO3a's regulatory mechanisms. | 7 | Interactive effect of dietary vitamin E and inorganic mercury on growth performance and bioaccumulation of mercury in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus treated with mercuric chloride显示文摘A 6-week feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E(DL-a-tocopheryl acetate, TA) on growth and mercury(Hg) accumulation in juvenile olive flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus)treated with mercuric chloride(HgCl_2). Vitamin E and HgCl_2 were added to the semi-purified basal diet.Six semi-purified diets in a 2 × 3 factorial design were formulated to contain 2 levels of Hg(0 or 20 mg HgCl_2/kg diet) and 3 levels of vitamin E(0, 100, or 200 mg TA/kg diet). Experimental fish(n = 360,9.99 ± 0.15 g) were randomly allocated into 30-L tanks at a density of 20 fish per tank with 3 replicates in each treatment and were fed twice a day. At the end of the feeding trial, dietary Hg depressed the growth performances in terms of weight gain(WG), specific growth rate(SGR), feed efficiency(FE) and protein efficiency ratio(PER) in fish, while fish fed the diets supplemented with vitamin E showed significant growth improvement in both presence and absence of HgCl_2 in the diets(P < 0.05). Survival rate was not affected in fish fed the experimental diets. Whole body compositions of fish such as lipid and moisture contents were influenced by dietary vitamin E supplementation. Total Hg contents of muscle, liver and kidney tissues were significantly reduced in fish fed diets supplemented with vitamin E(P< 0.05), while the two-way ANOVA showed that increasing Hg concentration has resulted in a reduction in vitamin E.Whole body fatty acids of fish like eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) contents were decreased by dietary Hg. However, supplementation of dietary vitamin E improved the a-linolenic acid(ALA) and EPA contents in fish. | 12 | Effect of twine thickness on size-selectivity of driftnet for the yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis in southwestern Sea of Korea显示文摘In order to determine the effect of twine thickness on the size-selectivity of the driftnet used for the yellow croaker, size-selectivity tests were conducted with three different twine thicknesses(monofi lament diameters of 0.279 mm(number's method; No. 3), 0.321 mm(No. 4), and 0.360 mm(No. 5)) of driftnets for the yellow croaker in the seas around Chooja-do, Jeju Islands. The selectivity curve was estimated by using Kitahara's method. In order to determine the physical properties of the twine used in the experimental fi shing nets, we measured the breaking load, elongation, and stiffness under both dry and wet conditions. In terms of physical properties, the thinnest twine(No. 3) had the strongest breaking strength per unit cross-sectional area, along with good elongation and excellent fl exibility. The thickest twine(No. 5) had the lowest fl exibility. In terms of selectivity, the net of No. 3 twine showed the broadest selection range and, thus, a relatively low selectivity compared with the other nets, while the less fl exible net of No. 5 twine showed the narrowest selectivity range and high selectivity. In addition, it was found that a thicker twine resulted in a smaller haul of small fi sh.
