Epidural anesthesia improves pancreatic perfusion and decreases the severity of acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To study the safety of epidural anesthesia(EA),its effect on pancreatic perfusion and the outcome of patients with acute pancreatitis(AP).METHODS: From 2005 to August 2010,patients with predicted severe AP [Ranson score ≥ 2,C-reactive protein > 100 or necrosis on computed tomography(CT)] were prospectively randomized to either a group receiving EA or a control group treated by patientcontrolled intravenous analgesia. Pain management was evaluated in the two groups every eight hours using the visual analog pain scale(VAS). Parameters for clinical severity such as length of hospital stay, use of antibiotics, admission to the intensive care unit,radiological/clinical complications and the need for surgical necrosectomy including biochemical data were recorded. A CT scan using a perfusion protocol was performed on admission and at 72 h to evaluate pancreatic blood flow. A significant variation in blood flow was defined as a 20% difference in pancreatic perfusion between admission and 72 h and was measured in the head, body and tail of the pancreas.RESULTS: We enrolled 35 patients. Thirteen were randomized to the EA group and 22 to the control group. There were no differences in demographic characteristics between the two groups. The Balthazar radiological severity score on admission was higher in the EA group than in the control group(mean score 4.15 ± 2.54 vs 3.38 ± 1.75,respectively,P = 0.347) and the median Ranson scores were 3.4 and 2.7 respectively(P = NS). The median duration of EA was 5.7 d,and no complications of the epidural procedure were reported. An improvement in perfusion of the pancreas was observed in 13/30(43%) of measurements in the EA group vs 2/27(7%) in the control group(P = 0.0025). Necrosectomy was performed in 1/13 patients in the EA group vs 4/22 patients in the control group(P = 0.63). The VAS improved during the first ten days in the EA group compared to the control group(0.2 vs 2.33,P = 0.034 at 10 d). Length of stay and mortality were not statistically different between the 2 groups(26 d vs 30 d,P = 0.65,and 0% for both respectively).CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that EA increases arterial perfusion of the pancreas and improves the clinical outcome of patients with AP.Samira M Sadowski Axel Andres Philippe Morel Eduardo Schiffer Jean-Louis Frossard Alexandra Platon Pierre-Alexandre Poletti Leo Bühler 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,43:21
New insights of Helicobacter pylori host-pathogen interactions: The triangle of virulence factors, epigenetic modifications and non-coding RNAs显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a model organism for understanding host-pathogen interactions and infection-mediated carcinogenesis. Gastric cancer and H. pylori colonization indicates the strong correlation. The progression and exacerbation of H. pylori infection are influenced by some factors of pathogen and host. Several virulence factors involved in the proper adherence and attenuation of immune defense to contribute the risk of emerging gastric cancer, therefore analysis of them is very important. H. pylori also modulates inflammatory and autophagy process to intensify its pathogenicity. From the host regard, different genetic factors particularly affect the development of gastric cancer. Indeed, epigenetic modifications, Micro RNA and long non-coding RNA received more attention. Generally, various factors related to pathogen and host that modulate gastric cancer development in response to H. pylori need more attention due to develop an efficacious therapeutic intervention. Therefore, this paper will present a brief overview of host-pathogen interaction especially emphases on bacterial virulence factors, interruption of host cellular signaling, the role of epigenetic modifications and non-coding RNAs.Farzam Vaziri Samira Tarashi Abolfazl Fateh Seyed Davar Siadat 2018World Journal of Clinical Cases2018,6,5:12
Effects of Royal Jelly Supplementation on Glycemic Control and Oxidative Stress Factors in Type 2 Diabetic Female:A Randomized Clinical Trial显示文摘Objective:It has been proposed that royal jelly has antioxidant properties and may improve oxidative stress and glycemic control. Therefore,we investigated the effects of royal jelly supplementation in diabetic females. Methods:In this pilot, parallel design randomized clinical trial,50 female volunteers with type2 diabetes were randomly allocated to the supplemented(25,cases)and placebo(25,cases)groups,based on random block procedure produced by Random Allocation Software, given a daily dose of 1,000 mg royal jelly soft gel or placebo, respectively, for 8 weeks. Before and after intervention, glycemic control indices, antioxidant and oxidative stress factors were measured. Results:After royal jelly supplementation, the mean fasting blood glucose decreased remarkably(163.05142.51 mg/dL vs.149.68±42.7 mg/dL).Royal jelly supplementation resulted in significant reduction in the mean serum glycosylated hemoglobin levels(8.67%±2.24%vs.7.05%±1.45%,P=0.001)and significant elevation in the mean insulin concentration(70.28±29.16 pmol/L vs.86.46±27.50 pmol/L,P=0.01).Supplementation significantly increased erythrocyte superoxidase dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities and decreased malondialdehyde levels(P<0.05).At the end of study, the mean total antioxidant capacity elevated insignificantly in both groups. Conclusions:On the basis of our findings,it seems that royal jelly supplementation may be beneficial in controlling diabetes outcomes.Further studies with larger sample size are warranted.Samira Pourmoradian Reza Mahdavi Majid Mobasseri Elnaz Faramarzi Mehrnoosh Mobasseri 2014Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2014,20,5:9
Pea3 expression promotes the invasive and metastatic potential of colorectal carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To investigate the function of Pea3 in colorectal carcinoma(CRC)invasion and metastatic potential.METHODS:The expression of Pea3 during clinical progression of human CRC was investigated using Oncomine Research Edition. To assay Pea3 expression in established CRC cell lines,we performed western blotting of cell lysates. We employed sh RNA-mediated knockdown of Pea3 in HCT116(HCT)and LS174T CRC cells which was confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR(q PCR)and western blotting.Transwell invasion assays,MTS proliferation assays, anoikis assays, and fluorometric matrix metalloprotease(MMP)assays wereperformed to determine the effects of Pea3 knockdown on invasion, proliferation, anoikis and MMP activity in CRC cells in vitro.Alterations in epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)and matrix metalloprotease(MMP)m RNA levels were determined by q PCR.CRC cells were injected into the flanks of nude mice to generate xenografts and tumor growth monitored with serial calliper measurements. To assay metastatic potential,CRC cells were injected into the spleen of nude mice, and histological analysis performed on the livers 21 d later.RESULTS:We demonstrated that reduction of Pea3expression in CRC cells significantly impaired their invasive capacity(HCT.sh Pea3,0.28±0.04 fold,P<0.01;LS.sh Pea3,0.15±0.04 fold;SW.sh Pea3,0.23±0.03,P<0.01),reduced anoikis resistance(HCT.sh Pea3 75.4%±1.9%viable cells vs HCT.sh Ctrl 88.6%±0.6%viable cells,P<0.01;LS.sh Pea3 71.7%±0.5%viable cells vs LS.Ctrl 89.6%±0.3%viable cells,P<0.005,but had no effect on proliferation(HCT.sh Ctrl AUC 5098±123 vs HCT.sh Pea3 5689±151,P<0.05;LS.sh Ctrl AUC 5600±324.1 vs LS.sh Pea3 6423±400,P<0.05).In vivo,HCT.sh Pea3 and HCT.sh Ctrl tumour xenografts grew at a similar rate(HCT.sh Pea3 2.64±0.82 fold vs HCT.sh Ctrl 2.88±0.80 fold,P>0.05).In keeping with a pro-metastatic function for Pea3 in CRC,several EMT markers and MMPs were downregulated in sh Pea3-expressing cells, suggesting that Pea3 may exert its effects through these processes.A reduction in overall MMP activity was observed in HCT.sh Pea3 cells compared to their control counterparts(HCT.sh Pea30.61±0.04 fold,P<0.005).This translated in vivo to the complete absence of metastases in the livers of mice that were grafted with CRC cells lacking Pea3.Conversely,CRC cells expressing Pea3 formed liver metastases in all mice.CONCLUSION:Our study implicates Pea3 as a mediator of metastases, and provides a biological rationale for the adverse prognosis associated with elevated Pea3 expression in human CRC.Aruz Mesci Samira Taeb Xiaoyong Huang Rishi Jairath Darshan Sivaloganathan Stanley K Liu 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,46:7
The benefits of neuroinflammation for the repair of the injured central nervous system显示文摘Inflammation of the nervous system(neuroinflammation)is now recognized as a hallmark of virtually all neurological disorders. In neuroinflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis, there is prominent infiltration and a long-lasting representation of various leukocyte subsets in the central nervous system(CNS)parenchyma.Even in classic neurodegenerative disorders, where such immense inflammatory infiltrates are absent, there is still evidence of activated CNS-intrinsic microglia. The consequences of excessive and uncontrolled neuroinflammation are injury and death to neural elements, which manifest as a heterogeneous set of neurological symptoms. However,it is now readily acknowledged, due to instructive studies from the peripheral nervous system and a large body of CNS literature, that aspects of the neuroinflammatory response can be beneficial for CNS outcomes. The recognized benefits of inflammation to the CNS include the preservation of CNS constituents(neuroprotection),the proliferation and maturation of various neural precursor populations, axonal regeneration, and the reformation of myelin on denuded axons.Herein,we highlight the benefits of neuroinflammation in fostering CNS recovery after neural injury using examples from multiple sclerosis, traumatic spinal cord injury, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. We focus on CNS regenerative responses, such as neurogenesis, axonal regeneration, and remyelination, and discuss the mechanisms by which neuroinflammation is pro-regenerative for the CNS.Finally,we highlight treatment strategies that harness the benefits of neuroinflammation for CNS regenerative responses.Heather Y.F.Yong Khalil S.Rawji Samira Ghorbani Mengzhou Xue V.Wee Yong 2019Cellular & Molecular Immunology2019,16,6:7
Synthesis and characterization of collagen/PLGA biodegradable skin scaffold fibers显示文摘The aim of this study is to investigate the applicability of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA)/collagen composite scaffold for skin tissue engineering.PLGA and collagen were dissolved in HFIP as a common solvent and fibrous scaffolds were prepared by electrospinning method. The scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),FTIR spectroscopy, mercury porosimetry, tensile strength, biocompatibility assays and Biodegradation.Cytotoxicity and cell adhesion were tested for two cell line groups, human dermal fibroblast(HDF)and human keratinocyte(HaCat).SEM images showed appropriate cell adhesion to the scaffold for both cell lines.MTT assays indicated that the cell viability of HDF cells increased with time, but the number of HaCat cells decreased after 14 days. The ultimate tensile strength was suitable for skin substitute application, but its elongation at break was rather low.For successful clinical application of the PLGA/collagen scaffold, some properties especially mechanical strain needs to be improved.Alireza Sadeghi-Avalshahr Samira Nokhasteh Amir Mahdi Molavi Mohammad Khorsand-Ghayeni Meysam Mahdavi-Shahri 2017Regenerative Biomaterials2017,4,5:7
Protective effect of ginger volatile oil against acetic acid-induced colitis in rats: a light microscopic evaluation显示文摘OBJECTIVE: Ulcerative colitis is a chronically recurrent infl ammatory bowel disease of unknown origin. In the present study, the effect of ginger(rhizome of Zing iber officinale Roscoe) volatile oil on a rat model of colitis was evaluated. METHODS: Volatile oil of ginger with doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, prednisolone(4 mg/kg), or vehicle were administered orally to groups of male Wistar rats(n = 6) for 5 d. Animals were randomly divided into 6 groups, each group consisting of 6 rats. Colitis was induced by intracolonic instillation of 2 mL of 4%(v/v) acetic acid solution. All rats were sacrificed 24 h later and the tissue injuries were assessed macroscopically and histopathologically. RESULTS: Ginger volatile oil with all doses reduced colon weight/length ratio(P < 0.01) and the effects were similar to the reference drugs. Higher oral doses of volatile oil(200 and 400 mg/kg) reduced ulcer severity(P < 0.05 and P < 0.01), ulcer area(P < 0.01) and ulcer index(P < 0.01). On the other hand, evaluation of microscopic scores showed that the dose of 400 mg/kg of volatile oil was effective to reduce infl ammation severity(P < 0.01) and infl ammation extent(P < 0.05) compared to the control group.CONCLUSION: It is concluded that ginger volatile oil could effectively reduce symptoms of experimental colitis in a dose-dependent manner.Amir Rashidian Saeed Mehrzadi Ali Reza Ghannadi Parvin Mahzooni Samira Sadr Mohsen Minaiyan 2014Journal of Integrative Medicine2014,12,2:7

Hepatitis B virus mutations potentially conferring adefovir/ tenofovir resistance in treatment-naive patients显示文摘Anti-hepatitis B virus(HBV)therapy leads to the emer- gence of mutant viral strains during the treatment of chronic hepatitis B with nucleos(t)ides analogues. The existence of HBV variants with primary antiviral resistance may be important for treatment choice. We studied two patients with chronic HBV infection by sequencing the HBV polymerase gene. They had adefovir-and tenofovir-related mutations in the viral polymerase, although they had never been treated. These mutations were rtV214A/rtN238T in one patient and rtA194T in the other. Thus, mutations in untreated patients deserve cautious surveillance. These data indicate that mutations that can theoretically confer adefovir or tenofovir resistance may emerge in treatmentnaive patients.Rebecca Pastor Franois Habersetzer Samira Fafi-Kremer Michel Doffoёl Thomas F Baumert Jean-Pierre Gut Franoise Stoll-Keller Evelyne Schvoerer 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,6:6
ChatGPT as an Educational Tool: Opportunities, Challenges, and Recommendations for Communication, Business Writing, and Composition Courses显示文摘This empirical study examines ChatGPT as an educational and learning tool.It investigates the opportunities and challenges that ChatGPT provides to the students and instructors of communication, business writing, and composition courses. It also strives to provide recommendations. After conducting 30 theory-based and application-based ChatGPT tests,it is found that ChatGPT has the potential of replacing search engines as it provides accurate and reliable input to students. For opportunities, the study found that ChatGPT provides a platform for students to seek answers to theory-based questions and generate ideas for application-based questions. It also provides a platform for instructors to integrate technology in classrooms and conduct workshops to discuss and evaluate generated responses. For challenges, the study found that ChatGPT,if unethically used by students, may lead to human unintelligence and unlearning. This may also present a challenge to instructors as the use of ChatGPT negatively affects their ability to differentiate between meticulous and automation-dependent students,on the one hand, and measure the achievement of learning outcomes,on the other hand.Based on the outcome of the analysis, this study recommends communication, business writing, and composition instructors to(1)refrain from making theory-based questions as take-home assessments,(2)provide communication and business writing students with detailed case-based and scenario-based assessment tasks that call for personalized answers utilizing critical, creative, and imaginative thinking incorporating lectures and textbook material,(3)enforce submitting all take-home assessments on plagiarism detection software, especially for composition courses,and(4)integrate ChatGPT generated responses in classes as examples to be discussed in workshops.Remarkably, this study found that ChatGPT skillfully paraphrases regenerated responses in a way that is not detected by similarity detection software. To maintain their effectiveness, similarity detection software providers need to upgrade their software to avoid such incidents from slipping unnoticed.Mohammad Awad AlAfnan Samira Dishari Marina Jovic Koba Lomidze 2023Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Technology2023,3,2:5
Resveratrol and fenofibrate ameliorate fructose-induced nonalcoholic steatohepatitis by modulation of genes expression显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of resveratrol, alone and in combination with fenofibrate, on fructose-induced metabolic genes abnormalities in rats. METHODS: Giving a fructose-enriched diet(FED) to rats for 12 wk was used as a model for inducing hepatic dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Adult male albino rats(150-200 g) were divided into a control group and a FED group which was subdivided into 4 groups, a control FED, fenofibrate(FENO)(100 mg/kg), resveratrol(RES)(70 mg/kg) and combined treatment( FENO + RES)( half the doses). A l l treatments were given orally from the 9th week till the end of experimental period. Body weight, oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT), liver index, glucose, insulin, insulin resistance(HOMA), serum and liver triglycerides(TGs), oxidative stress(liver MDA, GSH and SOD),serum AST, ALT, AST/ALT ratio and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) were measured. Additionally, hepatic gene expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling-3(SOCS-3), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c(SREBP-1c), fatty acid synthase(FAS), malonyl Co A decarboxylase(MCD), transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1) and adipose tissue genes expression of leptin and adiponectin were investigated. Liver sections were taken for histopathological examination and steatosis area were determined.RESULTS: Rats fed FED showed damaged liver, impairment of glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, ox ida t ive s t re s s a nd dy s l ipide m ia. As fo r ge ne expression, there was a change in favor of dyslipidemia and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) development. All treatment regimens showed some benefit in reversing the described deviations. Fructose caused deterioration in hepatic gene expression of SOCS-3, SREBP-1c, FAS, MDA and TGF-β1 and in adipose tissue gene expression of leptin and adiponectin. Fructose showed also an increase in body weight, insulin resistance(OGTT, HOMA), serum and liver TGs, hepatic MDA, serum AST, AST/ALT ratio and TNF-α compared to control. All treatments improved SOCS-3, FAS, MCD, TGF-β1 and leptin genes expression while only RES and FENO + RES groups showed an improvement in SREBP-1c expression. Adiponectin gene expression was improved only by RES. A decrease in body weight, HOMA, liver TGs, AST/ALT ratio and TNF-α were observed in all treatment groups. Liver index was increased in FENO and FENO + RES groups. Serum TGs was improved only by FENO treatment. Liver MDA was improved by RES and FENO + RES treatments. FENO + RES group showed an increase in liver GSH content.CONCLUSION: When resveratrol was given with half the dose of fenofibrate it improved NASH-related fructose-induced disturbances in gene expression similar to a full dose of fenofibrate.Enas A Abd El-Haleim Ashraf K Bahgat Samira Saleh 2016World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,10:5

Neutralizing antibodies in hepatitis C virus infection显示文摘Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of hepatitis world-wide. The majority of infected individuals develop chronic hepatitis which can then progress to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Spontaneous viral clearance occurs in about 20%-30% of acutely infected individuals and results in resolution of infection without sequaelae. Both viral and host factors appear to play an important role for resolution of acute infection. A large body of evidence suggests that a strong, multispecific and long-lasting cellular immune response appears to be important for control of viral infection in acute hepatitis C. Due too the lack of convenient neutralization assays, the impact of neutralizing responses for control of viral infection had been less defined. In recent years, the development of robust tissue culture model systems for HCV entry and infection has finally allowed study of antibody-mediated neutralization and to gain further insights into viral targets of host neutralizing responses. In addition, detailed analysis of antibody-mediated neutralization in individual patients as well as cohorts with well defined viral isolates has enabled the study of neutralizing responses in the course of HCV infection and characterization of the impact of neutralizing antibodiesfor control of viral infection. This review will summarize recent progress in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of antibody-mediated neutralization and its impact for HCV pathogenesis.Mirjam B Zeisel Samira Fafi-Kremer Isabel Fofana Heidi Barth Franoise Stoll-Keller Michel Doffo■l Thomas F Baumert 2007World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,36:3

A Novel Combinational Convolutional Neural Network for Automatic Food-Ingredient Classification显示文摘With the development of deep learning and Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs),the accuracy of automatic food recognition based on visual data have significantly improved. Some research studies have shown that the deeper the model is,the higher the accuracy is.However, very deep neural networks would be affected by the overfitting problem and also consume huge computing resources. In this paper,a new classification scheme is proposed for automatic food-ingredient recognition based on deep learning. We construct an up-to-date combinational convolutional neural network(CBNet)with a subnet merging technique.Firstly, two different neural networks are utilized for learning interested features. Then,a well-designed feature fusion component aggregates the features from subnetworks, further extracting richer and more precise features for image classification. In order to learn more complementary features, the corresponding fusion strategies are also proposed, including auxiliary classifiers and hyperparameters setting. Finally,CBNet based on the well-known VGGNet,ResNet and DenseNet is evaluated on a dataset including 41 major categories of food ingredients and 100 images for each category.Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that CBNet achieves promising accuracy for multi-class classification and improves the performance of convolutional neural networks.Lili Pan Cong Li Samira Pouyanfar Rongyu Chen Yan Zhou 2020Computers, Materials & Continua2020,,2:3
Association of Fas/Apo1 gene promoter (-670 A/G) polymorphism in Tunisian patients with IBD显示文摘AIM: To detect a possible association between the polymorphism of the (-670 A/G) Fas/Apo1 gene promoter and susceptibility to Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in the Tunisian population. METHODS: The (-670 A/G) Fas polymorphism was analyzed in 105 patients with CD, 59 patients with UC, and 100 controls using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method. RESULTS: Significantly lower frequencies of the Fas -670 A allele and A/A homozygous individuals were observed in CD and UC patients when compared with controls. Analysis of (-670 A/G) Fas polymorphism with respect to sex in CD and UC showed a significant difference in A/A genotypes between female patients and controls (P corrected = 0.004 in CD patients and P corrected = 0.02 in UC patients, respectively). Analysis also showed a statistically significant association between genotype AA of the (-670 A/G) polymorphism and the ileum localization of the lesions (P corrected = 0.048) and between genotype GG and the colon localization (Pcorrected = 0.009). The analysis ofinflammatory bowel disease patients according to clinical behavior revealed no difference. CONCLUSION: Fas-670 polymorphism was associated with the development of CD and UC in the Tunisian population.Walid Ben Aleya Imen Sfar Leila Mouelhi Houda Aouadi Mouna Makhlouf Salwa Ayed-Jendoubi Samira Matri Azza Filali Taoufik Najjar Taeib Ben Abdallah Khaled Ayed Yousr Gorgi 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,29:3

Integer quantum Hall effect in Kekulé-patterned graphene显示文摘Y-shaped Kekulébond textures in a honeycomb lattice on a graphene-copper superlattice have recently been experimentally revealed. In this paper, the effects of such a bond modulation on the transport coefficients of Kekulé-patterned graphene are investigated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field.Analytical expressions are derived for the Hall and longitudinal conductivities using the Kubo formula. It is found that the Y-shaped Kekulébond texture lifts the valley degeneracy of all Landau levels except that of the zero mode, leading to additional plateaus in the Hall conductivity accompanied by a split of the corresponding peaks in the longitudinal conductivity.Consequently, the Hall conductivity is quantized as±ne^(2)/h for n=2,4,6,8,10,...,excluding some plateaus that disappear due to the complete overlap of the Landau levels of different cones. These results also suggest that DC Hall conductivity measurements will allow us to determine the Kekulébond texture amplitude.Yawar Mohammadi Samira Bahrami 2022Chinese Physics B2022,31,1:2
