Lymphangiogenesis:A new player in cancer progression显示文摘Lymph node metastasis is the hallmark of colon cancer progression, and is considered one of the most important prognostic factors.Recently, there has been growing evidence that tumor lymphangiogenesis(formation of new lymphatic vessels) plays an important role in this process. Here,we review the latest f indings of the role of lymphangiogenesis in colorectal cancer progression, and discuss its clinical application as a biomarker and target for new therapy.Understanding the molecular pathways that regulate lymphangiogenesis is mandatory to pave the way for the development of new therapies for cancer. In the future, tailored treatments consisting of combinations of chemotherapy, other targeted therapies, and anti-lymphangiogenesis agents will hopefully improve patient outcomes. This progression to the clinic must be guided by new avenues of research, such as the identif ication of biomarkers that predict response to treatment. | Masayuki Nagahashi Subramaniam Ramachandran Omar M Rashid Kazuaki Takabe | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,32: | 14
Bitter melon: a panacea for inflammation and cancer显示文摘Nature is a rich source of medicinal plants and their products that are useful for treatment of various diseases and disorders. Momordica charantia, commonly known as bitter melon or bitter gourd, is one of such plants known for its biological activities used in traditional system of medicines. This plant is cultivated in all over the world, including tropical areas of Asia, Amazon, east Africa, and the Caribbean and used as a vegetable as well as folk medicine. All parts of the plant, including the fruit, are commonly consumed and cooked with different vegetables, stir-fried, stuffed or used in small quantities in soups or beans to give a slightly bitter flavor and taste. The plant is reported to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, anti-obesity, and immunomodulatory activities. The plant extract inhibits cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, autophagy and inhibiting cancer stem cells. The plant is rich in bioactive chemical constituents like cucurbitane type triterpenoids, triterpene glycosides, phenolic acids, flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, fatty acids, and proteins. Some of the isolated compounds(Kuguacin J, Karaviloside XI, Kuguaglycoside C, Momordicoside Q-U, Charantin, α-eleostearic acid) and proteins(α-Momorcharin, RNase MC2, MAP30) possess potent biological activity. In the present review, we are summarizing the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities of Momordica charantia along with a short account of important chemical constituents, providing a basis for establishing detail biological activities of the plant and developing novel drug molecules based on the active chemical constituents. | Prasad R. | 3 | Iron and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘The mechanisms that promote liver injury in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) are yet to be thoroughly elucidated. As such, effective treatment strategies are lacking and novel therapeutic targets are required. Iron has been widely implicated in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and represents a potential target for treatment. Relationships between serum ferritin concentration and NAFLD are noted in a majority of studies, although serum ferritin is an imprecise measure of iron loading. Numerous mechanisms for a pathogenic role of hepatic iron in NAFLD have been demonstrated in animal and cell culture models. However, the human data linking hepatic iron to liver injury in NAFLD is less clear, with seemingly conflicting evidence, supporting either an effect of iron in hepatocytes or within reticulo-endothelial cells. Adipose tissue has emerged as a key site at which iron may have a pathogenic role in NAFLD. Evidence for this comes indirectly from studies that have evaluated the role of adipose tissue iron with respect to insulin resistance. Adding further complexity, multiple strands of evidence support an effect of NAFLD itself on iron metabolism. In this review, we summarise the human and basic science data that has evaluated the role of iron in NAFLD pathogenesis. | Laurence J Britton V Nathan Subramaniam Darrell HG Crawford | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,36: | 14
Preliminary investigation on the antibacterial activity of mango(Mangifera indica L:Anacardiaceae) seed kernel显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract of mango(Mangifera indica L) seed kernel. Methods:Chokanan mango seed kernel and seed kernels from assorted mango varieties were collected, cleaned, dried and powered.Crude methanolic extracts of mango seed kernel were analyzed for the phytochemical constituents. The free radical scavenging activity was determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) assay.Antibacterial activity was evaluated by disc diffusion assay with three medically important bacterial pathogens such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)(MRSA),Escherichia coli(E.coli) and Vibrio vulnificus(V.vulnificus).Results:Qualitative phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of important phytochemical compounds such as glycosides, saponins, flavanoids, tannins and alkaloids. There was no significant difference in the phytochemical content between the single and assorted mango seed kernels. However, the free radical scavenging study indicated that the assorted mango kernels showed slighdy higher activity than the single species(P<0.05). The crude methanolic extract of mango seed kernel at a concentration of 100 mg/mL is found to have potential antimicrobial activity against MRSA and E.coli compared to V.vulnificus. Study on the antibacterial activity also indicated that there was no significant difference in the antibacterial activity of the single and assorted mango seed kernel extracts. Conclusions:The present study conclusively demonstrates the free radical scavenging activity and antibacterial activities of mango seed kernel. In addition, the results also indicated that there is no significant difference in the phytochemical content and biological activity of mango kernels from single and assorted mango varieties. | Jasminder Kaur Xavier Rathinam Marimuthu Kasi Khoo Miew Leng Rajasekaran Ayyalu Kathiresan S Sreeramanan Subramaniam | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,9: | 11
Investigation of hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant activities of aqueous extract of Terminalia paniculata bark in diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant activities of aqueous extract of Terminalia paniculata bark(AETPB) in streptozotocin(STZ)-mduced diabetic rats. Methods:Acute toxicity was studied in rats after the oral administration of AETPB to determine the dose to assess hypoglycemic activity. In rats, diabetes was induced by injection of STZ(60 mg/kg,i.p.) and diabetes was confirmed 72 h after induction, and then allowed for 14 days to stabilize blood glucose level. In diabetic rats,AETPB was orally given for 28 days and its effect on blood glucose and body weight was determined on a weekly basis. At the end of the experimental day, fasting blood sample was collected to estimate the haemoglobin(Hb),glycosylated haemoglobin(HbA1c),serum creatinine, urea, serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase(SGPT),serum glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase(SGOT) and insulin levels. The liver and kidney were collected to determine antioxidants levels in diabetic rats. Results: Oral administration of AETPB did not exhibit toxicity and death at a dose of 2000 mg/kg.AETPB treated diabetic rats significantly(P<0.001,P<0.01 and P<0.05) reduced elevated blood glucose, HbAlc,creatinine, urea,SGPT and SGOT levels when compared with diabetic control rats. The body weight,Hb,insulin and total protein levels were significantly(P<0.001,P<0.01 and P<0.05) increased in diabetic rats treated with AETPB compared to diabetic control rats.In diabetic rats, AETPB treatment significantly reversed abnormal status of antioxidants and lipid profile levels towards near normal levels compared to diabetic control rats. Conclusions:Present study results confirm that AETPB possesses significant hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant activities in diabetic condition. | Subramaniam Ramachandran Aiyalu Rajasekaran KT Manisenthilkumar | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,4: | 9
The structure, expression, and multifaceted role of immune-checkpoint protein VISTA as a critical regulator of anti-tumor immunity, autoimmunity, and inflammation显示文摘Among various immunoregulatory molecules, the B7 family of immune-checkpoint receptors consists of highly valuable targets for cancer immunotherapy.Antibodies targeting two B7 family co-inhibitory receptors,CTLA-4 and PD-1,have elicited long-term clinical outcomes in previously refractory cancer types and are considered a breakthrough in cancer therapy.Despite the success, the relatively low response rate(20–30%)warrants efforts to identify and overcome additional immune-suppressive pathways.Among the expanding list of T cell inhibitory regulators,V domain immunoglobulin suppressor of T cell activation(VISTA)is a unique B7 family checkpoint that regulates a broad spectrum of immune responses. Here,we summarize recent advances that highlight the structure, expression, and multi-faceted immunomodulatory mechanisms of VISTA in the context of autoimmunity, inflammation, and anti-tumor immunity. | Wenwen Xu TạMinh Hiếu Subramaniam Malarkannan Li Wang | 2018 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2018,15,5: | 8

Olfaction as a soldier——a review of the physiology and its present and future use in the military显示文摘Olfaction is one of our 5 main qualitative sensory abilities. In this review, we have examined the physiology of olfaction from the olfactory receptor to the brain. Through analyzing the physiology of olfaction, we have found that the biochemistry of olfactory nerve stimulation is unique from that of other similar pathways. Upon receiving large amounts of input from the olfactory nerve, the olfactory bulb, followed by several layers of centrifugal and centripetal processing in the brain, has to sort the information from the input as well as integrate it with other inputs from the brain to develop a coherent understanding of the input. We then examined the implications of olfaction in the military, the practical applications of electronic noses and problems associated with injury to olfaction that could affect compensation and combat worthiness of a soldier following injury. In the military, olfaction can allow the army to perform at its best through 4 main methods, namely ensuring olfaction is consistent with other dimensions of perception(ensuring optimal olfaction ability in all soldiers in combat), understanding the impact of different common combat environments on the sense of smell, utilizing odor as a defense mechanism and using olfactory aids when necessary. Electronic noses are olfactory aids that have a large potential in the military ranging from saving lives through the detection of explosives to potential methods for improving combustion efficiency. There are several problems associated with injury to olfaction that should be considered when deciding on compensation and combat worthiness of the soldier following an injury. | Palaniappan Ganesh Nagappan Somasundram Subramaniam De-Yun Wang | 2017 | Military Medical Research2017,4,3: | 4

Kruppel-like factor 10 protects against acute viral myocarditis by negatively regulating cardiac MCP-1 expression显示文摘Viral myocarditis(VMC)is a cardiac disease associated with myocardial inflammation and injury induced by virus infection.Cardiomyocytes have recently been regarded as key players in eliciting and modulating inflammation within the myocardium.Kruppel-like factor 10(KLF10)is a crucial regulator of various pathological processes and plays different roles in a variety of diseases. However, its role in VMC induced by coxsackievirus B3(CVB3)infection remains unknown. In this study,we report that cardiac KLF10 confers enhanced protection against viral myocarditis. We found that KLF10 expression was downregulated upon CVB3 infection.KLF10 deficiency enhanced cardiac viral replication and aggravated VMC progress.Bone marrow chimera experiments indicated that KLF10 expression in nonhematopoietic cells was involved in the pathogenesis of VMC.We further identified MCP-1 as a novel target of KLF10 in cardiomyocytes, and KLF10 cooperated with histone deacetylase 1(HDAC1)to negatively regulate MCP-1 expression by binding its promoter, leading to activation of MCP-1 transcription and recruitment of Ly6C^(high) monocytes/macrophages into the myocardium. This novel mechanism of MCP-1 regulation by KLF10 might provide new insights into the pathogenesis of VMC and a potential therapeutic target for VMC. | Jie Yang Hongkai Zhang Xuelian Wang Jing Guo Lin Wei Yahui Song Yuan Luo YinXia Zhao Malayannan Subramaniam Thomas C.Spelsberg Lie Wang Wei Xu Min Li | 2021 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,9: | 3
Acetic acid chromoendoscopy: Improving neoplasia detection in Barrett's esophagus显示文摘Barrett's esophagus(BE) is an important condition given its significant premalignant potential and dismal five-year survival outcomes of advanced esophageal adenocarcinoma. It is therefore suggested that patients with a diagnosis of BE undergo regular surveillance in order to pick up dysplasia at an earlier stage to improve survival. Current 'gold-standard' surveillance protocols suggest targeted biopsy of visible lesions followed by four quadrant random biopsies every 2 cm. However, this method of Barrett's surveillance is fraught with poor endoscopist compliance as the procedures are time consuming and poorly tolerated by patients. There are also significant miss-rates with this technique for the detection of neoplasia as only 13% of early neoplastic lesions appear as visible nodules. Despite improvements in endoscope resolution these problems persist. Chromoendoscopy is an extremely useful adjunct to enhance mucosal visualization and characterization of Barrett's mucosa. Acetic acid chromoendoscopy(AAC) is a simple, non-proprietary technique that can significantly improve neoplasia detection rates. This topic highlight summarizes the current evidence base behind AAC for the detection of neoplasia in BE and provides an insight into the direction of travel for further research in this area. | Fergus JQ Chedgy Sharmila Subramaniam Kesavan Kandiah Sreedhari Thayalasekaran Pradeep Bhandari | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,25: | 2
Clays as dietary supplements for swine:A review显示文摘Clays are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicate molecules composed of alkali and alkaline earth cations along with small amounts of various other elements. The best-known are montmorillonite, smectite, illite, kaolinite, biotite and clinoptilolite. The molecules in these clays are arranged in three-dimensional structures creating internal voids and channels capable of trapping a wide variety of molecules. As a result of this structure, clay minerals are regarded as a simple and effective tool for the prevention of the negative effects of many toxic compounds.Dietary supplementation with clays has been shown to improve weight gain and feed conversion in pigs.Where improvements in performance have been noted, one of the most likely explanations for the improvement is the fact clays increase nutrient digestibility.Clays reduce the speed of passage of feed along the digestive tract which allows more time for digestion.Feeding clays also causes morphological changes in the intestinal mucosa such as an increase in villus height and an increase in the villus height to crypt depth ratio. These changes increase the surface area of the gastrointestinal tract thus increasing nutrient digestibility.Several studies have indicated that feeding clay reduces the incidence, severity and duration of diarrhea in pigs. The mechanism for the reduction in diarrhea is likely due to increases in the numbers of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus and decreases in Clostridia and E.coli in the small intestine of pigs fed clays. In addition, the numbers of pigs born alive and weaned, birth weight and weaning weight have been shown to be higher for sows fed clays.Several studies have indicated that clays can help mitigate the effects of mycotoxins. The aim of the present review is to focus on the various clays which have been given attention in recent research and to discuss their potential to improve pig performance. | Mohana Devi Subramaniam In Ho Kim | 2016 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2016,7,1: | 2
Echovirus serotypes circulating in Malaysia from 2002 to 2013显示文摘Objective:To identify the circulating serotypes of human echovinis in Malaysia from 2002 in 2013.Methods:A toial of 31 retrospective samples from non-polio acute flacid paralysis,hand-food-and-mouth disease, viral meningitis and enterovirus cases were subjected to amplification of partial VPI gene by RT-PCR.Results:Sequencing and phylogeneiic analysis of the partial sequences identified presence of human echovinis and human coxsackie viruses. It was found that echovinis 11 was the commonly circulating serotype followed by echovinis6.echovinis 7.echovinis 3.echovinis 9.echovinis 30 and echovinis I in decreasing order.Additionally two types of human coxsackie virus isolates were detected which were coxsackie A24 and B3.Condusions:From the findings, there is a possibility that echovinis 11 is the predominant serotype among Malaysian patients with echovinis infection. However,a larger sample size will yield a more confident result to support this evidence.____________________ | Jeyanthi Suppiah TS Saraswathy Subramaniam Amry Khursany Ismail Apandi Yusof Zainah Sa'at | 2016 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,3: | 2

Diagnostic assays developed for the control of foot-andmouth disease in India显示文摘Foot-and-mouth disease(FMD) is a highly contagious and economically devastating disease of livestock, primarily affecting cattle, buffalo and pigs. FMD virus serotypes O, A and Asia1 are prevalent in India and systematic efforts are on to control and eventually eradicate the disease from the country. FMD epidemiology is complex due to factors like co-circulation, extinction, emergence and re-emergence of genotypes/lineages within the three serotypes, animal movement, diverse farm practices and large number of susceptible livestock in the country. Systematic vaccination, prompt diagnosis, strict biosecurity measures, and regular monitoring of vaccinal immunity and surveillance of virus circulation are indispensible features for the effective implementation of the control measures. Availability of suitable companion diagnostic tests is very important in this endeavour. In this review, the diagnostic assays developed and validated in India and their contribution in FMD control programme is presented. | Gaurav Kumar Sharma Sonalika Mahajan Rakesh Matura Saravanan Subramaniam Rajeev Ranjan Jitendra Biswal Manoranjan Rout Jajati Keshari Mohapatra Bana Bihari Dash Aniket Sanyal Bramhadev Pattnaik | 2015 | World Journal of Virology2015,4,3: | 2
