Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)by fungal enzymes:A review显示文摘Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are a large group of chemicals. They represent an important concern due to their widespread distribution in the environment, their resistance to biodegradation, their potential to bioaccumulate and their harmful effects.Several pilot treatments have been implemented to prevent economic consequences and deterioration of soil and water quality. As a promising option, fungal enzymes are regarded as a powerful choice for degradation of PAHs.Phanerochaete chrysosporium,Pleurotus ostreatus and Bjerkandera adusta are most commonly used for the degradation of such compounds due to their production of ligninolytic enzymes such as lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase and laccase. The rate of biodegradation depends on many culture conditions, such as temperature, oxygen, accessibility of nutrients and agitated or shallow culture. Moreover, the addition of biosurfactants can strongly modify the enzyme activity. The removal of PAHs is dependent on the ionization potential. The study of the kinetics is not completely comprehended, and it becomes more challenging when fungi are applied for bioremediation.Degradation studies in soil are much more complicated than liquid cultures because of the heterogeneity of soil, thus, many factors should be considered when studying soil bioremediation, such as desorption and bioavailability of PAHs.Different degradation pathways can be suggested. The peroxidases are heme-containing enzymes having common catalytic cycles. One molecule of hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the resting enzyme withdrawing two electrons.Subsequently, the peroxidase is reduced back in two steps of one electron oxidation.Laccases are copper-containing oxidases. They reduce molecular oxygen to water and oxidize phenolic compounds.Tayssir Kadri Tarek Rouissi Satinder Kaur Brar Maximiliano Cledon Saurabhjyoti Sarma Mausam Verma 2017Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,1:19
Groundwater Potential Zoning in Thirumanimuttar Sub-Basin Tamilnadu, India—A GIS and Remote Sensing Approach显示文摘The main objective of the study is to identify groundwater potential zones in Thirumanimuttar basin with an integrated approach using Remote Sensing and geographical information system(GIS).FCC Image of Landsat TM 30 m resolution data and topographic maps has been used to generate thematic maps like geology, geomorphology, lineament and lineament density,drain-age,drainage density, and slope map of the study area.A number of geomorphic units such as Denudational hills, structural hills,Bajadas,Colluvial plain,Pediplain,Deep Pediment and Alluvial plains have been observed.A composite groundwater potential map has been generated as very high, high, medium, low and very low based on the groundwater availability area. The upper,mid-dle and downstream of the basins have been identified as potential zones for groundwater exploration. The regions of lineaments and intersecting lineaments proved for groundwater potential zones. The data generated was validated with field checks and ob-served to be in conformity with the same.MURUGESAN Vasanthavigar KRISHNARAJ Srinivasamoorthy KANNUSAMY Vijayaragavan SELVARAJ Gopinath SUBRAMANYA Sarma 2011Geo-Spatial Information Science2011,14,1:10
Potential of (18)~F-FDG-PET as a valuable adjunct to clinical and response assessment in rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative spondyloarthropathies显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the role of fluorine-18-labeled fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) in various rheumatic diseases and its potential in the early assessment of treatment response in a limited number of patients. METHODS: This study involved 28 newly diagnosed patients, of these 17 had rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 11 had seronegative spondyloarthropathy (SSA). In the SSA group, 7 patients had ankylosing spondylitis, 3 had psoriatic arthritis, and one had non-specific SSA. Patients with RA were selected as per the American College of Rheumatology criteria. One hour after FDG injection, a whole body PET scan was performed from the skull vertex to below the knee joints using a GE Advance dedicated PET scanner. Separate scans were acquired for both upper and lower limbs. Post-treatment scans were performed in 9 patients in the RA group (at 6-9 wk from baseline) and in 1 patient with psoriatic arthropathy. The pattern of FDG uptake was analysed visually and quantified as maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) in a standard region of interest. Metabolic response on the scan was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively and was correlated with clinical assessment. RESULTS: The qualitative FDG uptake was in agreement with the clinically involved joints, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein values and the clinical assessment by the rheumatologist. All 17 patients in the RA group showed the highest FDG avidity in painful/swollen/tender joints. The uptake pattern was homogeneous, intense and poly-articular in distribution. Hypermetabolism in the regional nodes (axillary nodes in the case of upper limb joint involvement and inguinal nodes in lower limb joints) was a constant feature in patients with RA. Multiple other extra-articular lesions were also observed including thyroid glands (in associated thyroiditis) and in the subcutaneous nodules. Treatment response was better appreciated using SUVmax values than visual interpretation, when compared with clinical evaluation. Four patients showed a favourable response, while 3 had stable disease and 2 showed disease progression. The resolution of regional nodal uptake (axillary or inguinal nodes based on site of joint involvement) in RA following disease modifying anti-rheumatoid drugs was noteworthy, which could be regarded as an additional parameter for identifying responding patients. In the SSA group, uptake in the affected joint was heterogeneous, low grade and nonsymmetrical. In particular, there was intense tendon and muscular uptake corresponding to symptomatic joints. The patients with psoriatic arthritis showed intense FDG uptake in the joints and soft tissue. CONCLUSION: 18F-FDG PET accurately delineates the ongoing inflammatory activity in various rheumatic diseases (both at articular and extra-articular sites) and relates well to clinical symptoms. Different metabolic patterns on FDG-PET scanning in RA and SSA can have important implications for their diagnosis and management in the future with the support of larger studies. FDG-PET molecular imaging is also a sensitive tool in the early assessment of treatment response, especially when using quantitative information. With these benefits, FDG-PET could play a pivotal clinical role in the management of inflammatory joint disorders in the future.Vishu Vijayant Manjit Sarma Hrushikesh Aurangabadkar Lata Bichile Sandip Basu 2012World Journal of Radiology2012,4,12:5

Garden rue inhibits the arachidonic acid pathway, scavenges free radicals, and elevates FRAP: role in inflammation显示文摘AIM:In the present study, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the methanol extract of Ruta graveolens leaves(RG-M) were evaluated using various in vivo and in vitro models.METHOD:For anti-inflammatory activity,RG-M was administered by the oral route(p.o.) in a carrageenan–induced paw edema model, and by the intraperitoneal route(i.p.) in an exudative inflammation model. In vitro inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes was evaluated. In vitro antioxidant activity was also examined.Endogenous antioxidant status was further evaluated by ferric reducing ability of plasma model.RESULTS:RG-M showed maximum inhibition of carrageenan-induced edema(100 mg·kg-1–33.36%; 200 mg·kg-1–45.32% and 400 mg·kg-1–56.28%).In the exudative inflammation model,a significant reduction in leukocyte migration(200 mg·kg-1–54.75% and 400 mg·kg-1–77.97%) and protein exudation(200 mg·kg-1–31.14% and 400 mg·kg-1–49.91%) were observed.RG-M also exhibited inhibition of COX–1(IC50 182.27 μg·mL-1) and COX–2(IC50 190.16 μg·mL-1) as well as 5–LOX(IC50 215.71 μg·mL-1).Antioxidant activity was significant with improved endogenous antioxidant status.CONCLUSION:The results demonstrated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of RG-M with potent inhibitory effects on the arachidonic acid pathways.Manjir Sarma Kataki Bibhuti B Kakoti Biman Bhuyan Ananya Rajkumari Prakash Rajak 2014Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2014,12,3:3
Localization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals in surface soil of Asia’s oldest oil and gas drilling site in Assam, northeast India:Implications for the bio-economy显示文摘The environmental influx of hazardous contaminants viz PAHs and HMs occurs due to oil and gas drilling, and processing of petroleum products in industrial facilities and refineries. This problem plagues crude oil drilling sites as PAHs are an essential component of and HMs coexist with crude oil.We analyzed the spatial distribution of 16 PAHs and 8 HMs in 10 contaminated sites of Assam,a state in India. These included Digboi, where crude oil was drilled in 1867 and the first oil well in Asia that was drilled.TheƩ16 PAHs in soil were detected with a minimum of 13.48 and a maximum of 86.3 mgkg1 andƩ8 heavy metal concentrations in the soil ranged between 69.51 and 336.06 mgkg1.A negative correlation was detected between the relative concentrations of PAHs and HMs.The results confirmed that the nonbiodegradable nature of HMs made them stay in the soil for longer periods of time.In our study,we found that the levels of lead, copper, nickel, and chromium(total)in soil were 73.62,11.86,58.97 and 158.66 mgkg1.The recovery percentage for PAHs and HMs were in the range of 67e97%and 90e95%respectively.Spatial distribution indices for Phenanthrene/Anthracene,Naphthalene/Acenapthhylene,Chyrsene/Benzo(g,h,i)perylene and Fluranthene/Pyrene)calculated for soil samples indicated that the spatial distribution of PAHs in soil is uneven which might be due to variations in contaminates disseminated in soil.Such regionalized concentration has serious implications on the bio-economy both in terms of health and economy, especially since the proximity of crude oil sites to paddy fields and/or tea plantations uniquely marks the landscape of upper Assam.Hemen Sarma N.F.Islam P.Borgohain A.Sarma M.N.V.Prasad 2016Emerging Contaminants2016,2,3:3
A Comprehensive Review of Animal Models for Coronaviruses: SARSCoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV显示文摘The recent outbreak of coronavirus disease(COVID-19) caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) has already affected a large population of the world. SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the same family of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus(SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus(MERSCoV). COVID-19 has a complex pathology involving severe acute respiratory infection, hyper-immune response, and coagulopathy. At present, there is no therapeutic drug or vaccine approved for the disease. There is an urgent need for an ideal animal model that can reflect clinical symptoms and underlying etiopathogenesis similar to COVID-19 patients which can be further used for evaluation of underlying mechanisms, potential vaccines, and therapeutic strategies. The current review provides a paramount insight into the available animal models of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV for the management of the diseases.Ashutosh Singh Rahul Soloman Singh Phulen Sarma Gitika Batra Rupa Joshi Hardeep Kaur Amit Raj Sharma Ajay Prakash Bikash Medhi 2020Virologica Sinica2020,35,3:3

Root Extract of Polygonum Hydropiper Alters the Expression of Rat Uterine Protein Profile in Presence and Absence of Ovary in-situ during Periimplantation Period:An Evidence on SDS-PAGE显示文摘Objective To study its effects on reproductive performance in albino rats. Methods The chromatographic fraction(CF) of crude methanolic extract of the herb has been subcutaneously administered to female albino rats.Experiments were carried out in adult cyclic females and oavriectomised(OVX) females during early gestation period.Uterine horns were collected following the respective treatment regimen to study the protein profile in 15% gel SDS-PAGE.Results The CF induced changes in the expression of protein in rat uterus.New proteins have been expressed in uterus of adult cyclic females having ovary in-situ.The OVX females treated with CF showed altered uterine protein profile compared with that of OVX control and OVX estradiol-17β(E2) treated rats. The CF exerted its effect on expression of uterine protein during early gestation period in rats. While uterine proteins of CF treated females were similar to that of controls during preimplantation period;many of the proteins on day 6 of gestation have been found either missing or expressed in lesser intensity. Conclusion The root of Polygonum hydropiper contains potential compound(s) which can alter the reproductive performance of female rats modulating uterine protein expression.Pranjiv Goswami Ajit Hazarika Hirendra N Sarma 2009Journal of Reproduction and Contraception2009,20,4:2
DNA Barcode ITS Effectively Distinguishes the Medicinal Plant Boerhavia diffusa from Its Adulterants显示文摘Boerhavia diffusa (B. diffusa), also known as Punarnava, is an indigenous plant in India and an important component in traditional Indian medicine. The accurate identification and collection of this medicinal herb is vital to enhance the drug's efficacy and biosafety. In this study, a DNA barcoding technique has been applied to identify and distinguish B. diffusa from its closely-related species. The phylogenetic analysis was carried out for the four species of Boerhavia using barcode candidates including nuclear ribosomal DNA regions ITS, ITS1, ITS2 and the chloroplast plastid gene psbA-trnH. Sequence alignment revealed 26% polymorphic sites in ITS, 30% in ITS1, 16% in ITS2 and 6% in psbA-trnH, respectively. Additionally, a phylogenetic tree was constructed for 15 species using ITS sequences which clearly distinguished B. diffusa from the other species. The ITS1 demonstrates a higher transition/transversion ratio, percentage of variation and pairwise distance which differentiate B. diffusa from other species of Boerhavia. Our study revealed that ITS and ITS1 could be used as potential candidate regions for identifying B. diffusa and for authenticating its herbal products.Dhivya Selvaraj Dhivya Shanmughanandhan Rajeev Kumar Sarma Jijo C. 16Viral Genotypes and Associated Risk Factors of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in India显示文摘Objective This study aims to investigate the etiological relationship among hepatitis B virus(HBV),hepatitis C virus(HCV),and alcohol as risk factors in a cohort of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) patients from India. The clinical and biochemical profiles and tumor characteristics in the HCC cases were also evaluated. Methods A total of 357 consecutive cases of HCC fulfilling the diagnostic criteria from the Barcelona-2000 EASL conference were included in the study. The blood samples were evaluated for serological evidence of HBV and HCV infection, viral load, and genotypes using serological tests, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results The male/female ratio for the HCC cases was 5.87:1.Majority of the HCC patients(33.9% ) were 50 to 59 years of age, with a mean age of 4±13.23 years.More than half the cases(60.8% ) had underlying cirrhosis at presentation.Among the HCC patients,68.9% were HBV related,21.3% were HCV related,18.8% were alcoholic, and 18.2% were of cryptogenic origin. The presence of any marker positive for HBV increased the risk for developing HCC by almost 27 times[OR:27.33;(12.87-60.0)].An increased risk of 10.6 times was observed for HCC development for cases positive for any HCV marker[OR:10.55;(3.13-42.73)].Heavy alcohol consumption along with HCV RNA positivity in cirrhotic patients was found to be a risk for developing HCC by 3 folds[OR:3.17;(0.37-70.71)]. Conclusions Patients of chronic HBV infection followed by chronic HCV infection were at higher risk of developing HCC in India. Chronic alcohol consumption was found to be a risk factor in cirrhotic cases only when it was associated with HCV RNA positivity. Most of the patients had a large tumor size(>5 cm) with multiple liver nodules, indicating an advanced stage of the disease thus making curative therapies difficult.Manash Pratim Sarma Mohammad Asim Subhash Medhi Thayumanavan Bharathi Richa Diwan Premashis Kar 2012Clinical oncology and cancer resexreh2012,9,3:2
