| 1 | Investigations on an Axial Flow Fan Stage subjected to Circumferential Inlet Flow Distortion and Swirl显示文摘The combined effects of swirl and circumferential inlet flow distortion on the flow field of an axial flow fan stage are reported in this paper. The study involves measurements at the inlet of the rotor and exit of the rotor and stator at design and off design now conditions. The study indicated that at the design flow condition, swirl had caused deterioration of the performance in addition to that caused by distortfou. Pressure rise imparted in the distortion zone is higher than in the free zone. The attenuation of distortion is high in the presence of swirl. | M. Govardhan K. | 2 | Chemopreventive Effects of Black Tea Polyphenols in Mouse Skin Model of Carcinogenesis显示文摘In the present investigations, the antitumorigenic effect of black tea polyphenols (BTP) in twcrstage mouse skin model of carcinogenesis was studied. The animals were initiated with a single 'subcarcinogenic' topical dose (52 μg/200 μl acetone ) of 7, 12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA). To evaluate the anti-tumour initiating activity, BTP was topically applied twice a week for three weeks prior to DMBA application, followed by topical treatment with 12-o-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) (5 μg/200 μl acetone, 2x/wk. ) as promoter. For evaluation of antitumor promoting activity, BTP was applied prior to each treatment of TPA. BTP application showed marked inhibitory effect as antitumour initiator as well as antitumour promoter in mouse skin medel of two-stage carcinogenesis. Since initiation involves genetic pathway and tumour promotion involves epigenetic pathway, it seems that BTP exerts its antitumorigenic effect by altering both genetic and epigenetic | SEEMA JAVED N. | 4 | Neutral Red Retention by Earthworm Coelomocytes: A Biomarker of Cadmium Contamination in Soil显示文摘The earthworm Metaphire posthuma were used as a model to assess the toxic potential of cadmium incorporated into the soil by environmental or human activities. The retention period of neutral red in the lysosomes of the coelomocytes was used as a biomarker. The viability of harvested coelomocytes by a non_invasive extrusion protocol was 93% with no alteration by the dye during experimentation. The control cells retained dye for 119 and 121 min in normal soil and KCl, respectively, whereas a linear decline in the retention time in the treated earthworm coelomocytes was observed. | 5 | Toxicity Evaluation of Freshwater Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806: Ⅱ Nephrotoxicity in Rats显示文摘Nephrotoxic potential of laboratory cultures of freshwater cyanobacterium (blue-green al ga) Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 (Pasteur Institute) was assessed in male rats. The ani mals were injected intraperitoneally with 0. 5, 1. 0 and 2. 0 LD50 doses of lyophilized cell ex tract. Elevated plasma urea and creatinine levels were accompanied by decrease in protein and albumin levels, followed by hematuria, proteinuria and bilirubinuria. Also decrease in kidney lactate dehydrogenase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase indicated possible nephrotoxic po tential of the cyanobacteria. The extract also produced various hematological changes associat ed with stagnant type of hypoxia. | 7 | Antitumor Activity of Diallyl Sulfide in Two-StageMouse Skin Model of Carcinogenesis显示文摘It has been reported that diallyl sulfide (DAS), a sulfur-containing volatile compound in garlic (Allium sativum ), exerts anticarcinogenic activity in various rodent tumor models. In the present study, the antitumor property of DAS was tested in Swiss albino mice in the two steqe initiation-promotion mouse skin carcinogenesis. Skin cancers were initiated topically with a single subcarcinOgenic dose (52μg) of 7, 12-dimethyl benz (a) anthracene (DMBA). Promotion was performed by twice weekly applications of 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) at a dose of 5μg/animal for 32 weeks. DAS was applied topically (250μg/animal) thrice weekly for 3 weeks for anti-initiating and 1 h prior to each promotion treatment for anti-promoting studies. The results showed that the treatment schedule of DAS can effectively delay the onset of tumorigenesis and reduce the cumulative number of tumors and the average number of tumors per mouse. In groups in which DAS applied prior to initiation or promotion, a significant population of the aniinals remained tumor-free till the termination of experiment. | 9 | LOCAL SCOUR AROUND BRIDGE ABUTMENTS显示文摘This paper summarizes the design equations for local scour depth around bridge abutments as proposed by different investigators, and also the different factors, affecting the scour depth. Methods for the estimation of local scour depth based on dimensional analysis are also presented. The design methods based on empirical relations such as flow depth, flow intensity, sediment characteristics, abutments shape and size, alignment, and approach channel geometry are also discussed. Since clear-water scour is the maximum scour depth, the equation for clear-water scour is recommended for the computation of local scour depth around bridge abutments for uniformly and non- uniformly graded sediments. | Er. The variation of microhardness with load which is best explained by Hays and Kendall’s law leads to the load independent values of hardness. Classification of cracks is dealt with and it is reported that the transition from Palmqvist to median types of cracks occurs at higher loads. | 15 | Removal of Nitrogen Oxides in Diesel Engine Exhaust by Plasma Assisted Molecular Sieves显示文摘This paper reports the studies conducted on removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust using electrical discharge plasma combined with adsorbing materials such as molecular sieves. This study is being reported for the first time. The exhaust is taken from a diesel engine of 6 kW under no load conditions. The characteristic behavior of a pulse energized dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the diesel exhaust treatment is reported. The NOx removal was not significant (36%) when the reactor without any packing was used. However, when the reactor was packed with molecular sieves (MS -3A, -4A & -13X), the NOx removal efficiency was increased to 78% particularly at a temperature of 200 o C. | 16 | Evaluation of Cytogenetic Effects of Isoproturon on the Root Meristem Cells of Allium sativum显示文摘Objective\ To validate the use of Allium sativum as a reliable test model for genotoxicity, isoproturon, a substituted phenylalkylurea herbicide, was evaluated on the root meristem cells by this plant system. Method\ Test concentrations were selected by determining EC50 and root tips were exposed to various concentrations for 6 or 24 hr. EC50 concentration was calculated to be 70.8 ppm for the root growth. In addition to root growth retardation exposure to isoproturon induced morpholoogical changes like discolouration and stiffness of roots. Results\ Exposure to various experimental concentrations of isoproturon (35-280 ppm), including EC50, significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the mitotic index and induced chromosome breaks/mitotic aberrations at 6 or 24 hr. Conclusion\ The frequency of aberrations was found to be decreased in a dose dependant manner at 24 or 48 hr post exposure, however in comparison of control cells the frequency of aberrations was considerably high which indicates genotoxicity potentials of isoproturon. Further, present study also suggests that Allium sativum is a sensitive, efficient, and reliable test system for measuring the genotoxicity potential of environmental chemicals. | L. K. S. | 18 | Abrasive Wear Characteristics of Carbon and Low Alloy Steels for Better Performance of Farm Implements显示文摘The low stress abrasion behaviours of heat treated mild, medium carbon and high C - low Cr steels, which are generally used in making farm implements, have been investigated. The simple heat treatment greatly improves the hardness, tensile strength and abrasion resistance of medium carbon and high C - low Cr steels. The results indicate that the material removal during abrasion is controlled by a number of factors, such as hardness, chemical composition, microstructure and heat treatment conditions. The conclusion is that the heat treated high C - low Cr steel and mild steel carburized by using coaltar pitch provide the best hardness and abrasion resistance and thus appear to be the most suitable materials for making agricultural tools. | M.Kumar and R. | 19 | Melanophore Indexing:A New Bio-assay Technique for the Analysis of Acute Heavy Metal (HgCl_2) Toxicity显示文摘Toxicity of 0.3 ppm (96 h LC50 value) and 0.03 ppm of mercuric chloride on the melanophores of the skin at different time intervals has been studied. Mercury treatment causes immediate increase in the number and size of the pigment cells. Subsequently these pigment cells form a dense matting of melanophore network with their cell processes intellacing with those of their neighbours. These cells later show degeneration and lysis releasing large quantity of pigment granules into the intercellular spaces in the dermis.Later the pigment cells regenerate several times each followed by degeneration in a cyclic manner. Prolonged treatment with subletha. concentration of mercuric chloride does not show significant alteration in the melanophore density and size. Statistical analysis and wide spread destruction of melanophores observed during 4-6 days of exPosure might help in testing water samples contaminated with lethal concentration of heavy metal | M. T.
