| 2 | Role of live microbial feed supplements with reference to anaerobic fungi in ruminant productivity: A review显示文摘To keep the concept of a safe food supply to the consumers, animal feed industries world over are showing an increasing interest in the direct-fed microbials(DFM) for improved animal performance in terms of growth or productivity. This becomes all the more essential in a situation, where a number of the residues of antibiotics and/or other growth stimulants reach in milk and meat with a number of associated potential risks for the consumers. Hence, in the absence of growth stimulants, a positive manipulation of the rumen microbial ecosystem to enhance the feedstuff utilization for improved production efficiency by ruminants has become of much interest to the researchers and entrepreneurs. A few genera of live microbes(i.e., bacteria, fungi and yeasts in different types of formulations from paste to powder) are infrequently used as DFM for the domestic ruminants. These DFM products are live microbial feed supplements containing naturally occurring microbes in the rumen. Among different DFM possibilities, anaerobic rumen fungi(ARF) based additives have been found to improve ruminant productivity consistently during feeding trials. Administration of ARF during the few trials conducted, led to the increased weight gain, milk production, and total tract digestibility of feed components in ruminants. Anaerobic fungi in the rumen display very strong cell-wall degrading cellulolytic and xylanolytic activities through rhizoid development, resulting in the physical disruption of feed structure paving the way for bacterial action. Significant improvements in the fiber digestibility were found to coincide with increases in ARF in the rumen indicating their role. Most of the researches based on DFM have indicated a positive response in nutrient digestion and methane reducing potential during in vivo and/or in vitro supplementation of ARF as DFM. | 3 | Bile acid receptors and gastrointestinal functions显示文摘Bile acids modulate several gastrointestinal(GI)functions including electrolyte secretion and absorption,gastric emptying,and small intestinal and colonic motility.High concentrations of bile acids lead to diarrhea and are implicated in the development of esophageal,gastric and colonic cancer.Alterations in bile acid homeostasis are also implicated in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Our understanding of the mechanisms underlying these effects of bile acids on gut functions has been greatly enhanced by the discovery of bile acid receptors,including the nuclear receptors:farnesoid X receptor(FXR),vitamin D receptor(VDR),pregnane X receptor(PXR),and constitutive androstane receptor(CAR);and G protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs):Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5(TGR5),sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 2(S1PR2),and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3(M3R).For example,various studies provided evidence demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effects of FXR and TGR5 activation in models of intestinal inflammation.In addition,the activation of TGR5 in enteric neurons was recently shown to increase colonic motility,which may lead to bile acid-induced diarrhea(BAD).Interestingly,TGR5 induces the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1)from L-cells to enhance insulin secretion and modulate glucose metabolism.Because of the importance of these receptors,agonists of TGR5 and intestine-specific FXR agonists are currently being tested as an option for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and primary bile acid diarrhea,respectively.This review summarizes current knowledge of the functional roles of bile acid receptors in the GI tract. | Alexander L.Ticho Pooja Malhotra Pradeep K.Dudeja Ravinder K.Gill Waddah A.Alrefai | 2019 | Liver Research2019,3,1: | 13 |

| 8 | Effect of dietary incorporation of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids rich oil sources on fatty acid profile, keeping quality and sensory attributes of broiler chicken meat显示文摘The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of dietary replacement of commonly used vegetable oil(sunflower oil, SFO) with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) rich oil sources on broiler chicken performance, carcass yield, meat fatty acid composition, keeping quality and sensory attributes of meat. In the current experiment, 300 day-old Krishibro broiler chicks were randomly distributed to 5 dietary groups(50 replicates with 6 chicks in each) prepared by replacing SFO(2% and 3% of diet during starter and finisher periods, respectively) with n-3 PUFA rich soybean oil(SO), mustard oil(MO), linseed oil(LO) or fish oil(FO) on weight basis. Variation in oil sources had no influence(P > 0.05) on performance and carcass yield. Supplementation of MO, LO or FO significantly(P < 0.01) increased the n-3 PUFA, lowered the n-6 PUFA deposition and n-6:n-3 ratio in breast and thigh without affecting the organoleptic characters(appearance, flavour, juiciness, tenderness and overall acceptability) of meat.However, thiobarbituric acid reacting substances concentration in meat was increased(P < 0.01) with LO and FO supplementation compared with SFO. | 10 | Aerobic bacterial flora of the normal conjunctiva at high altitude area of Shimla Hills in India:a hospital based study显示文摘AIM:To study the normal aerobic conjunctival flora in lower to mid Himalayan region of Shimla Hills.METHODS:Samples from normal conjunctiva of 200 individuals above the age of 13 years who visited Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital Shimla for refraction or cataract surgery were taken by anaesthetising the conjunctival sac with sterile 4% Xylocaine solution.Samples were obtained by gently rubbing lower fornix with a sterile cotton wool swab moistened with normal saline and keeping the eye lids wide apart to avoid contamination from lid margins.It was immediately inoculated in Brain Heart infusion and subjected to standard aerobic culture and identification techniques.RESULTS:Totally,72 eyes(36%) conjunctival sacs were sterile.Predominant aerobes isolated were Staphylococcus spp.in 120(60%) followed by Haemophilus in 16(8%),diphtheroids in 10(5%),and Escherichia coli(E.coli) in 4(2%).A single aerobe was isolated from 98 eyes(49%) while 30 eyes(15%) yielded more than 1 aerobe.Staphylococcus epidermidis(S.epidermidis) was the most common bacterium,found alone in 58 eyes(29%) and in combination with another aerobe in 30 eyes(15%),followed by Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) in 18(9%) and 10 eyes(5%) respectively.CONCLUSION:S.epidermidis is the most common commensal organism followed by Haemophilus species.diphtheroids occupied the third position which otherwise are found more abundantly in literature.Pathogens like S.aureus,Staphylococcus citreus and E.coli were also found.Therefore,preoperative administration of topical broad spectrum antibiotics is extremely important in prophylaxis against ocular infection.The variation in microflora of normal conjunctiva in this part of world can be attributed to geographical,climatic and ethnic characteristics of the population under study. | Sharma Parmeshri Dass Sharma Neelam Gupta Ravinder Kumar Singh Parul | 2013 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2013,6,5: | 4 |

| 14 | Heterogeneous integration of contact-printed semiconductor nanowires for high-performance devices on large areas显示文摘In this work,we have developed a contact-printing system to efficiently transfer the bottom-up and top-down semiconductor nanowires(NWs),preserving their as-grown features with a good control over their electronic properties.In the close-loop configuration,the printing system is controlled with parameters such as contact pressure and sliding speed/stroke.Combined with the dry pre-treatment of the receiver substrate,the system prints electronic layers with high NW density(7 NWs/μm for bottom-up ZnO and 3 NWs/μm for top-down Si NWs),NW transfer yield and reproducibility.We observed compactly packed(~115 nm average diameters of NWs,with NW-to-NW spacing~165 nm)and well-aligned NWs(90%with respect to the printing direction).We have theoretically and experimentally analysed the role of contact force on NW print dynamics to investigate the heterogeneous integration of ZnO and Si NWs over pre-selected areas.Moreover,the contact-printing system was used to fabricate ZnO and Si NW-based ultraviolet(UV)photodetectors(PDs)with Wheatstone bridge(WB)configuration on rigid and flexible substrates.The UV PDs based on the printed ensemble of NWs demonstrate high efficiency,a high photocurrent to dark current ratio(>10^(4))and reduced thermal variations as a result of inherent self-compensation of WB arrangement.Due to statistically lesser dimensional variations in the ensemble of NWs,the UV PDs made from them have exhibited uniform response. | Carlos García Núñez Fengyuan Liu William Taube Navaraj Adamos Christou Dhayalan Shakthivel Ravinder Dahiya | 2018 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2018,4,1: | 3 |

| 18 | A novel technique using hydrophilic polymers to promote axonal fusion显示文摘The management of traumatic peripheral nerve injury remains a considerable concern for clinicians.With minimal innovations in surgical technique and a limited number of specialists trained to treat peripheral nerve injury,outcomes of surgical intervention have been unpredictable.The inability to manipulate the pathophysiology of nerve injury(i.e.,Wallerian degeneration) has left scientists and clinicians depending on the slow and lengthy process of axonal regeneration(~1 mm/day).When axons are severed,the endings undergo calcium-mediated plasmalemmal sealing,which limits the ability of the axon to be primarily repaired.Polythethylene glycol(PEG) in combination with a bioengineered process overcomes the inability to fuse axons.The mechanism for PEG axonal fusion is not clearly understood,but multiple studies have shown that a providing a calcium-free environment is essential to the process known as PEG fusion.The proposed mechanism is PEG-induced lipid bilayer fusion by removing the hydration barrier surrounding the axolemma and reducing the activation energy required for membrane fusion to occur.This review highlights PEG fusion,its past and current studies,and future directions in PEG fusion. | Ravinder Bamba D.Colton Riley Nathaniel D.Kelm Mark D.Does Richard D.Dortch Wesley P.Thayer | 2016 | Neural Regeneration Research2016,11,4: | 2 |
| 19 | Increased fecal viral content associated with obesity in mice显示文摘AIM: To investigate the presence of total gut viral content in obese mice, and establish correlation with obesity associated metabolic measures and gut microbiome.METHODS: Fresh fecal samples were collected from normal and obese(Leptin deficient Lep^(ob/ob)) mice. Total viral DNA and RNA was isolated and quantified for establishing the correlation with metabolic measures and composition of gut bacterial communities.RESULTS: In this report, we found that obese mice feces have higher viral contents in terms of total viral DNA and RNA(P < 0.001). Interestingly, these increased viral DNA and RNA content were tightly correlated with metabolic measures, i.e., body weight, fat mass and fasting blood glucose. Total viral content were positively correlated with firmicutes(R^2 > 0.6), whilst negatively correlated with bacteroidetes and bifidobacteria.
