1Hypothetical mode of action of earthworm extract with hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties显示文摘The hepatoprotective potential of earthworm extract (EE) (Lampito mauritii, Kinberg) was evaluated against paracetamol-induced liver injury in Wistar albino rat, in comparison with silymarin, the standard hepatoprotective drug. We observed a reduction in liver antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) and in serum total protein, and an increase in serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), serum aspertate aminotranferase (AST), serum alanine aminotranferase (ALT), bilirubin and liver thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) due to liver injury in the paracetamol-administered rats (2 g/kg). On the contrary, increased activities of liver GSH, SOD, GPx, CAT and serum total protein level, and decrease in the contents of serum ALP, AST, ALT, bilirubin and liver TBARS were observed in rats administered with different doses of EE (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg), which are similar to the activities of hepato-protective drug silymarin (150 mg/kg). The mode of action of EE as evidenced by the above parameters may suggest that EE, on the one hand, prevents the formation of the reactive oxygen groups, or scavenges these groups, thereby preventing the damage on the hepatic cells, and, on the other hand, modulates the genes responsible for synthesis of antioxidant enzymes such as GPx, CAT and SOD in liver tissue and decreases the serum enzymatic activities such as ALP, AST and ALT.Mariappan BALAMURUGAN Kasi PARTHASARATHI Lalpet Souri RANGANATHAN Edwin L. 2Influence of cobalt on performance of Cu-CeO2 catalysts for preferential oxidation of CO显示文摘Copper and cobalt oxides supported on CeO2 were investigated for preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide(CO-PROX)in the presence of excess hydrogen and CO2.(Cuo)1-x(Co3 O4)x/3-(CeO2)2.5(x=0,0.25,0.50,0.75,0.85 and 1)catalysts were prepared by coprecipitation method. These mixed oxide catalysts were characterized by several physicochemical techniques, such as BET surface area(SBET),X-ray diffraction(XRD),high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM),temperature programmed reduction(TPR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).XRD studies show the peaks related to CuO and Co3 O4 phases in copper and cobalt containing CeO2 catalysts. The average particle size of the CeO2 crystallites is in the range of 8-10 nm as evaluated from HRTEM studies.XPS studies demonstrate that Cu,Co and Ce in(cuO)1-x(Co3O4)x/3-(CeO2)2.5 catalysts are presented in+2 and+1,+3 and+2 and+4 and+3 oxidation states, respectively. The catalyst with x=0.75 shows better activity and selectivity towards CO-PROX.Though the catalyst with only copper(CuO-CeO2,x=0)shows good activity but reverse water gas shift(RWGS)reaction is noticed at high temperature. On the other hand,RWGS reaction is suppressed on the cobalt containing CuO-ceO2 catalyst.Cobalt on CeO2 with x=1 shows hardly any activity for PRoX reaction at low temperatures. No methanation activity is observed on CuO-CeO2 or Co3O4-CeO2 catalysts. In contrast, combination of copper and cobalt on CeO2 shows methanation of CO where enhanced activity is observed with increasing in cobalt content.Sachin Malwadkar Parthasarathi Bera C.V.V.Satyanarayana 2020Journal of Rare Earths2020,38,9:7

4Potential applications of lactic acid bacteria and bacteriocins in antimycobacterial therapy显示文摘Tuberculosis(TB) is a communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M. tuberculosis). WHO estimated that 10.4 million new(incident) TB cases worldwide in year 2016. The increased prevalence of drug resistant strains and side effects associated with the current anti-tubercular drugs make the treatment options more complicated. Hence, there are necessities to identify new drug candidates to fight against various sub-populations of M. tuberculosis with less or no toxicity/side effects and shorter treatment duration. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria(LAB) attract attention of researchers because of its 'Generally recognized as safe' status. LAB and its bacteriocins possess an effective antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi. Interestingly bacteriocins such as nisin and lacticin 3147 have shown antimycobacterial activity in vitro. As probiotics, LAB plays a vital role in promoting various health benefits including ability to modulate immune response against various infectious diseases. LAB and its metabolic products activate immune system and thereby limiting the M. tuberculosis pathogenesis. The protein and peptide engineering techniques paved the ways to obtain hybrid bacteriocin derivatives from the known peptide sequence of existing bacteriocin. In this review, we focus on the antimycobacterial property and immunomodulatory role of LAB and its metabolic products. Techniques for large scale synthesis of potential bacteriocin with multifunctional activity and enhanced stability are also discussed.Anbarasu Sivaraj Revathy Sundar Radhakrishnan Manikkam Krupakar Parthasarathy Uma Rani Vanaja Kumar 2018Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2018,11,8:2
5Muskingum equation based downstream sediment flow simulation models for a river system显示文摘Applications of sediment transport and water flow characteristics based sediment transport simulation models for a river system are presented in this study. An existing water-sediment model and a new sediment-water model are used to formulate the simulation models representing water and sediment movement in a river system. The sediment-water model parameters account for water flow characteristics embodying sediment transport properties of a section. The models are revised formulations of the multiple water inflows model describing water movement through a river system as given by the Muskingum principle. The models are applied to a river system in Mississippi River basin to estimate downstream sediment concentration, sediment discharge, and water discharge.River system and the river section parameters are estimated using a revised and the original multiple water inflows models by applying the genetic algorithm. The models estimate downstream sediment transport rates on the basis of upstream sediment/water flow rates to a system.Model performance is evaluated by using standard statistical criteria;downstream water discharge resulting from the original multiple water inflows model using the estimated river system parameters indicate that the revised models satisfactorily describe water movement through a river system. Results obtained in the study demonstrate the applicability of the sediment transport and water flow characteristics-based simulation models in predicting downstream sediment transport and water flow rates in a river system.Briti Sundar Sil Parthasarathi Choudhury 2016International Journal of Sediment Research2016,31,2:2

9Diversity, distribution and resource values of woody climbers in tropical forests of southern Eastern Ghats, India显示文摘We investigated the distribution and resource values of liana species assessed in six hill complexes of southern Eastern Ghats, India. 143 liana species (DBH (diameter at breast height) ≥1.5 cm) and 32,033 liana individuals were recorded from 110 transects (0.5 ha each covering 55 ha area) in the study sites. The resource values of lianas were broadly categorized into ecological and economic importance. About 90% (129) of liana species and 96% (30,564) of liana individuals were established ecological/economic values. Fruit rewards provided by 76 species and 20,325 individuals constituted the major resource of ecological importance. 82 species and 21,457 liana individuals are of economic importance as medicine, edible fruits, edible and medicinal values, and yet others are used for different domestic purposes including furniture, fuel wood, rope making etc.. Ecologically, the prevalence of succulent diaspores in lianas of Indian Eastern Ghats indicates the animal dependence of many liana species for dispersal and underlines the need for a holistic and whole-forest conservation approach in maintaining forest biodiversity.Chellam Muthumperumal Narayanaswamy Parthasarathy 2013Journal of Forestry Research2013,24,2:2

15GDF15 promotes prostate cancer bone metastasis and colonization through osteoblastic CCL2 and RANKL activation显示文摘Bone metastases occur in patients with advanced-stage prostate cancer(PCa). The cell-cell interaction between PCa and the bone microenvironment forms a vicious cycle that modulates the bone microenvironment, increases bone deformities, and drives tumor growth in the bone. However, the molecular mechanisms of PCa-mediated modulation of the bone microenvironment are complex and remain poorly defined. Here, we evaluated growth differentiation factor-15(GDF15) function using in vivo preclinical PCa-bone metastasis mouse models and an in vitro bone cell coculture system. Our results suggest that PCa-secreted GDF15 promotes bone metastases and induces bone microarchitectural alterations in a preclinical xenograft model. Mechanistic studies revealed that GDF15 increases osteoblast function and facilitates the growth of PCa in bone by activating osteoclastogenesis through osteoblastic production of CCL2 and RANKL and recruitment of osteomacs. Altogether, our findings demonstrate the critical role of GDF15 in the modulation of the bone microenvironment and subsequent development of PCa bone metastasis.Jawed Akhtar Siddiqui Parthasarathy Seshacharyulu Sakthivel Muniyan Ramesh Pothuraju Parvez Khan Raghupathy Vengoji Sanjib Chaudhary Shailendra Kumar Maurya Subodh Mukund Lele Maneesh Jain Kaustubh Datta Mohd Wasim Nasser Surinder Kumar Batra 2022Bone Research2022,10,1:2
