| 1 | Observation of ocean current response to 1998 Hurricane Georges in the Gulf of Mexico显示文摘The ocean current response to a hurricane on the shelf-break is examined. The study area is the DeSoto Canyon in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, and the event is the passage of 1998 Hurricane Georges with a maximum wind speed of 49 m/s. The data sets used for analy- sis consist of the mooring data taken by the Field Program of the DeSoto Canyon Eddy Intrusion Study, and simultaneous winds ob- served by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Moored Buoy 42040. Time-depth ocean current energy density images derived from the observed data show that the ocean currents respond almost immediately to the hurricane with important differ- ences on and off the shelf. On the shelf, in the shallow water of 100 m, the disturbance penetrates rapidly downward to the bottom and forms two energy peaks, the major peak is located in the mixed layer and the secondary one in the lower layer. The response dissipates quickly after external forcing disappears. Off the shelf, in the deep water, the major disturbance energy seems to be trapped in the mixed layer with a trailing oscillation; although the disturbance signals may still be observed at the depths of 500 and 1 290 m. Verti- cal dispersion analysis reveals that the near-initial wave packet generated off the shelf consists of two modes. One is a barotropic wave mode characterized by a fast decay rate of velocity amplitude of 0.020 s-1, and the other is baroclinic wave mode characterized by a slow decay rate of 0.006 9 s-1. The band-pass-filtering and empirical function techniques are employed to the frequency analysis. The results indicate that all frequencies shift above the local inertial frequency. On the shelf, the average frequency is 1.04f in the mixed layer, close to the diagnosed frequency of the first baroclinic mode, and the average frequency increases to 1.07f in the thermocline. Off the shelf, all frequencies are a little smaller than the diagnosed frequency of the first mode. | 5 | Anti-anxiety effect of Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract via regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis显示文摘BACKGROUND:Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction has been closely linked to anxiety.Previous studies have shown that Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract exhibits clear anxio-lytic effects, but it is unclear about the mechanism underlying regulation of the HPA axis dysfunction in these anxiolytic effects.OBJECTIVE:To observe the effects of Valeriana jatamansi Jones (Zhizhu Xiang) extract on HPA axis function in a rat model of anxiety, and to compare these effects with positive control estazolam.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING:Randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China, between February and September in 2006.MATERIALS:Estazolam was purchased from Shanghai Jiufu Pharmaceutical, China; Valeriana jatamansi Jones was purchased from the Lotus Pond Market for Chinese Herbal Medicine in Chengdu.It consisted of iridoids and flavonoid components.METHODS:A total of 72 Sprague Dawley rats, aged 2 months, were randomly assigned to 6 groups:low-, medium-, and high-dose Valeriana jatamansi Jones groups intragastrically injected with 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 g/kg per day Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract, respectively; estazolam group intragastrically injected with 1.5 mg/kg per day estazolam; model and normal groups administered 5 mL physiological saline.Anxiety was established in all groups, except the normal group, through the use of elevated plus-maze test at 7 days following drug administration.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Blood β-endorphin and corticosterone levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay following treatment with Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract.Expressions of HPA axis-related genes were measured by cDNA microarray.RESULTS:Blood β-endorphin and corticosterone levels were significantly greater in the model group than in the normal group.Compared with the model group, levels decreased with Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract or estazolam treatment, particularly in the low-dose Valeriana jatamansi Jones group (P<0.01).cDNA microarray results demonstrated that corticotropin-releasing hormone and Orexin, which are associated with HPA axis function, were differentially expressed; expression increased in the model group, but decreased in rats treated with Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract.CONCLUSION:Valeriana jatamansi Jones extract plays a role in regulating HPA axis function in a rat model of anxiety, and this effect was superior to estazolam. | Zhiyong Yan Tian'e Zhang Ting Xiao Lingzhen Pan Jinzhi Qin Zhanping Zhang Changying Zuo | 2010 | Neural Regeneration Research2010，5，14： | 9 |
| 6 | The maternally expressed polycomb group gene OsEMF2a is essential for endosperm cellularization and imprinting in rice显示文摘Cellularization is a key event in endosperm development.Polycomb group(PcG)genes,such as Fertilization-Independent Seed 2(FIS2),are vital for the syncytium-to-cellularization transition in Arabidopsis plants.In this study,we found that OsEMF2a,a rice homolog of the Arabidopsis PcG gene Embryonic Flower2(EMF2),plays a role similar to that of FIS2 in regard to seed development,although there is limited sequence similarity between the genes.Delayed cellularization was observed in osemf2a,associated with an unusual activation of type I MADS-box genes.The cell cycle was persistently activated in osemf2a caryopses,which was likely caused by cytokinin overproduction.However,the overaccumulation of auxin was not found to be associated with the delayed cellularization.As OsEMF2a is a maternally expressed gene in the endosperm,a paternally inherited functional allele was unable to recover the maternal defects of OsEMF2a.Many imprinted rice genes were deregulated in the defective hybrid seeds of osemf2a(♀)/9311(♂)(m9).The paternal expression bias of some paternally expressed genes was disrupted in m9 due to either the activation of maternal alleles or the repression of paternal alleles.These findings suggest that OsEMF2a-PRC2-mediated H3K27me3 is necessary for endosperm cellularization and genomic imprinting in rice. | Xiaojun Cheng Meiyao Pan Zhiguo E Yong Zhou Baixiao Niu Chen Chen | 2021 | Plant Communications2021，2，1： | 5 |

| 9 | Plant growth,antioxidative enzyme,and cadmium tolerance responses to cadmium stress in Canna orchioides显示文摘The cadmium tolerance capacity of Canna orchioides was evaluated using glasshouse experiment to lay a theoretical foundation to broad applications of this species in cadmium(Cd)polluted areas.The plant growth,Cd absorption,and antioxidative enzyme activities of canna plants treated with different Cd concentrations(0,100,and 200mg·kg^(-1)per dry soil)for 30 days were investigated.The results indicated that the growth of roots,leaves and stems was restricted following Cd addition.The bio-concentration factor was the highest in the roots,followed by the leaves,rhizomes,and stems.Compared with the control,the translocation factor decreased sharply after 100mg·kg^(-1)or 200mg·kg^(-1)Cd treatment,whereas the tolerance index decreased significantly under 200mg·kg^(-1)Cd exposure.The Cd accumulation rate and total Cd accumulation significantly increased under 200mg·kg^(-1)Cd treatment than the control.Themalondialdehyde content remained unchanged at different Cd concentrations,while the relative electrical conductivity of the root increased significantly following 200mg·kg^(-1)Cd treatment.Cd stress increased significantly the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD),and ascorbate peroxidase(APX)in the leaves,whereas only SOD was raised in the roots.The catalase(CAT)and POD activity in the roots did not differ significantly at different Cd concentrations.Conversely,APX in the roots decreased significantly under Cd stress,which suggests that the protective mechanisms in the leaves differ from those in the roots.These results indicated that C.orchioides has a high tolerance for Cd.Furthermore,the reactive oxygen species caused by Cd stress could be effectively scavenged by the antioxidative system.The present study proved that C.orchioides constitutes a promising ornamental plant for use in the restoration of areas contaminated with Cd. | Wen’e Zhang Xuejun Pan Qian Zhao Ting Zhao | 2021 | Horticultural Plant Journal2021，7，3： | 3 |

Here, we generated Hgenome-wide integrated maps of H3K27me3 modification and transcriptome for Col, C24 and their F1 hybrid. A total of 1,828 genomic regions showing variation in H3K27me3 modification between Col and C24 were identified, most of which were associated with genic regions. Natural variation of H3K27me3 modification between parents could result in allelic bias of H3K27me3 in hybrids. Furthermore, we found that H3K27me3 variation between Col and C24 was negatively correlated with gene expression differences between two accessions, especially with those arising from the cis-effect.
