1Hygiene hypothesis in inflammatory bowel disease: A criticalreview of the literature显示文摘The hygiene hypothesis is thought to be a significant contributor to the growing incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) around the world, although the evidence for specific factors that underlie the hygiene hypothesis in IBD is unclear. We aimed to systematically review the literature to determine which hygiene-related factors are associated with the development of IBD. Publications identified from a broad based MEDLINE and Current Contents search between 1966 and 2007 on key terms relevant to the 'hygiene hypothesis' and IBD including H pylori exposure, helminths, cold chain hypothesis, measles infection and vaccination, antibiotic use, breastfeeding, family size, sibship, urban upbringing, day care attendance and domestic hygiene were reviewed. The literature suggests that the hygiene hypothesis and its association with decreased microbial exposure in childhood probably plays an important role in the development of IBD, although the strength of the supporting data for each of the factors varies considerably. The most promising factors that may potentially be associated with development of IBD include H pylori exposure, helminths, breastfeeding and sibship. However, the vast majority of studies in this area are plagued by serious methodological shortcomings, particularly the reliance on retrospective recall of information making it difficult to truly ascertain the importance of a 'hygiene hypothesis' in IBD. The 'hygiene hypothesis' in IBD is an important area of research that may give clues to the aetiology of this disease. 2Positive aspects of caregiving in schizophrenia: A review显示文摘Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness which is associated with significant consequences for both the patients and their relatives. Due to chronicity of the illness, the relatives of patients of schizophrenia have to bear the main brunt of the illness. Studies across the world have evaluated various aspects of caregiving and caregivers such as burden, coping, quality of life, social support, expressed emotions, and psychological morbidity. In general the research has looked at caregiving as a negative phenomenon, however, now it is increasingly recognised that caregiving is not only associated with negative consequences only, also experience subjective gains and satisfaction. This review focus on the conceptual issues, instruments available to assess the positive aspects of caregiving and the various correlates of positive aspects of caregiving reported in relation to schizophrenia. The positive aspect of caregiving has been variously measured as positive caregiving experience, caregiving satisfaction, caregiving gains and finding meaning through caregiving scale and positive aspects of caregiving experience. Studies suggests that caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and psychotic disorders experience caregiving gains(in the form of becoming more sensitive to persons with disabilities, clarity about their priorities in life and a greater sense of inner strength), experience good aspects of relationship with the patient, do have personal positive experiences. 4Assessment scales for delirium: A review显示文摘Over the years many scales have been designed for screening, diagnosis and assessing the severity of delirium. In this paper we review the various instruments available to screen the patients for delirium, instruments available to diagnose delirium, assess the severity, cognitive functions, motoric subtypes, etiology and associated distress. Among the various screening instruments, NEECHAM confusion scale and delirium observation scale appear to be most suitable screening instrument for patients' in general medical and surgical wards, depending on the type of rater(physician or nurse). In general, the instruments which are used for diagnosis [i.e., confusion assessment method(CAM), CAM for intensive care unit(CAM-ICU), Delirium Rating Scale-revised version(DRS-R-98), memorial selirium assessment scale, etc. ] are based on various Diagnostic and Statistical Manual criteria and have good to excellent reliability and fair to good validity. Among the various diagnostic instruments, CAM is considered to be most useful instrument because of its accuracy, brevity, and ease of use by clinicians and lay interviewers. In contrast, DRS-R-98 appears to be a comprehensive instrument useful for diagnosis, severity rating and is sensitive to change and hence can be used for monitoring patients over a period. In the ICU setting, evidence suggests that CAM-ICU and Nursing Delirium Screening Scale had comparable sensitivities, but CAM-ICU has higher specificity. 6Transcranial direct current stimulation in psychiatric disorders显示文摘The interest in non-invasive brain stimulation techniques is increasing in recent years. Among these techniques, transcranial direct current stimulation(t DCS) has been the subject of great interest among researchers because of its easiness to use, low cost, benign profile of side effects and encouraging results of research in the field. This interest has generated several studies and randomized clinical trials, particularly in psychiatry. In this review, we provide a summary of the development of the technique and its mechanism of action as well as a review of the methodological aspects of randomized clinical trials in psychiatry, including studies in affective disorders, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, child psychiatry and substance use disorder. Finally,we provide an overview of t DCS use in cognitive enhancement as well as a discussion regarding its clinical use and regulatory and ethical issues. 7Non-pharmacological therapies for inflammatory bowel disease: Recommendations for self-care and physician guidance显示文摘We performed a scoping review on sought-after complementary therapies for patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), specifically diet, physical activity and exercise(PA/E), and psychotherapy. We aim to update patients with IBD on therapies for self-care and provide physicians with guidance on how to direct their patients for the management of IBD. A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PUBMED was completed in Sept 2016. Studies on diet, PA/E, or psychotherapy in patients with IBD were included. Medical Subject Heading terms and Boolean operators were used. The search was limited to full-text English articles describing an adult population. This review included 67 studies: Diet(n = 19); PA/E(n = 19); and psychotherapy(n = 29). We have made the following recommendations:(1) Diet: Consumption of diets rich in vegetables, fruit and soluble fiber may be beneficial in IBD. A trial of a low FODMAP diet can be considered in those patients with functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Restrictive diets are lacking in evidence and should be avoided;(2) PA/E: Regular lowmoderate intensity activity, including cardiovascular and resistance exercise, has been shown to improve quality of life(QOL) and may improve inflammation; and(3) psychotherapy: Therapies such as cognitive-behavioural interventions, mindfulness, hypnosis, and stress management have been shown to improve QOL, but evidence is limited on their impact on anxiety, depression, and disease activity. 8Amalgamated gold-nanoalloys with enhanced catalytic activity for the detection of mercury ions(Hg^2+)in seawater samples显示文摘Mercury(Hg)is extremely toxic,and continues to cause major threats to aquatic life,human health and the environment.Hg^2+mainly derives from seawater as a product of atmospheric deposition,therefore there is great demand for sensing approaches that can detect Hg^2+in seawater samples.Herein,we demonstrate that the peroxidase-mimicking activity of gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)or so-called nanozymes,can be exploited for the detection of Hg^2+ions in various water samples.In a high electrolyte environment,the catalytic activity for the oxidation of 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine(TMB)was significantly diminished due to poor stability of the bare-AuNPs.This activity was reduced by-73.7%when the NaCl concentration was higher than 1.168%,which is much lower than that of seawater(-3.5%),thus presenting its unsuitability for detecting Hg^2+in harsh water matrices.To overcome this limitation,AuNPs were first functionalized with oligo-ethylene glycol(OEG),of which their colloidal form presented high stability in NaCl concentrations up to 20%and across a wide range of pHs from 1-14.Interestingly,the catalytic activity of OEG-AuNPs for the oxidation of TMB was strongly suppressed by the coating,but enhanced upon formation of Au-Hg amalgamation.This novel finding underlies a straightforward,sensitive,and highly selective detection platform for Hg^2+in water samples.The approach could detect the exposure limit level for Hg^2+in drinking water(i.e.,2 ppb for tap and bottled water)as set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)and the World Health Organization(WHO).When Hg^2+was spiked into a 3.5%saline solution and a coastal seawater certified reference material(CRM),the detection limits were found to be 10 ancM 3 ppb,respectively,which exceed the Hg^2+concentrations commonly found within seawater(-60-80 ppb).The whole procedure takes less than 45 min to conduct,providing a highly innovative,rapid and low-cost approach for detecting Hg^2+in complex water matrices.Natasha Logan Claire McVey Christopher Elliott Cuong Cao 2020Nano Research2020,13,4:6
9Unusual switchable peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme for the determination of proteolytic biomarker显示文摘Detection of enzyme biomarkers originating from either bio-fluids or contaminating microorganisms is of utmost importance in clinical diagnostics and food safety. Herein, we present a simple, low-cost and easy-to-use sensing approach based on the switchable peroxidase-mimicking activity of plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that can catalyse for the oxidation of 3,3’,5’5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for the determination of protease enzyme. The AuNP surface is modified with casein, showing dual functionalities. The first function of the coating molecule is to suppress the intrinsic peroxidase-mimicking activity of AuNPs by up to 77.1%, due to surface shielding effects. Secondly, casein also functions as recognition sites for the enzyme biomarker. In the presence of protease, the enzyme binds to and catalyses the degradation of the coating layer on the AuNP surface, resulting in the recovery of peroxidase-mimicking activity. This is shown visually in the development of a blue colored product (oxidised TMB) or spectroscopically as an increase in absorbance at 370 and 650 nm. This mechanism allows for the detection of protease at 44 ng·mL^-1 in 90 min. The nanosensor circumvents issues associated with current methods of detection in terms of ease of use, compatibility with point-of-care testing, low-cost production and short analysis time. The sensing approach has also been applied for the detection of protease spiked in ultra-heat treated (UHT) milk and synthetic human urine samples at a limit of detection of 490 and 176 ng·mL^-1, respectively, showing great potential in clinical diagnostics, food safety and quality control.Claire McVey Natasha Logan Nguyen T. 10环斑猛猎蝽对烟蚜若虫的捕食作用显示文摘【目的】明确环斑猛猎蝽(Sphedanolestes impressicollis Stal.)对烟田烟蚜[Myzus persicae(Sulzer)]若虫的捕食潜力,为田间应用环斑猛猎蝽防控烟蚜提供参考。【方法】实验室条件下,在培养皿中设置1头饥饿24 h的环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫与不同密度梯度的1~4龄烟蚜若虫,统计环斑猛猎蝽的捕食量并通过GrapPad Prism 8.0、DPS等软件进行生物学统计分析,明确环斑猛猎蝽对烟蚜若虫的功能反应和搜寻效应;以不同密度的环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫与烟蚜4龄若虫在不同温度梯度及空间格局条件下,通过控制单一变量法并构建线性回归方程,明确环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫种内干扰对捕食率的影响以及自身密度、温度、空间格局对捕食量的影响,评估环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫对烟蚜4龄若虫的捕食功能反应模型。【结果】环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫对烟蚜若虫的捕食功能反应符合Holling-II模型,其种内干扰及自身密度对捕食量的影响分别符合Hassell模型和Watt模型。环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫对1~4龄烟蚜若虫中的3龄和4龄若虫捕食具有偏好性,对4龄若虫的捕食量最大,最大日捕食量为55.7头,其次为3龄烟蚜(55.3头)。在空间一定和烟蚜若虫定量条件下,环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫个体间存在种内干扰,干扰系数为1.31,并随着自身密度的增加干扰增强,平均捕食量下降。在不同空间且烟蚜若虫密度一定的条件下,随着空间的增大,环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫对猎物的捕食量减少。在16~32℃的温度梯度下,环斑猛猎蝽4龄若虫对烟蚜若虫的捕食量随着温度的升高而逐渐增强,32℃下的日捕食量最大,达23头。【结论】环斑猛猎蝽在烟田中具有防治烟蚜的潜力。冯万祖 Natasha Isabel Tanatsiwa Mbiza 张浩然 吴雨欣 李建平 许汝冰 黎妍妍 张建民 李锡宏 2021南方农业学报2021,52,11:5
11A comparison of survival and pathologic features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and hepatitis C virus patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To compare the clinical outcome and pathologic features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and hepatitic C virus(HCV) patients with HCC(another group in which HCC is commonly seen) undergoing liver transplantation.METHODS:Patients transplanted for HCV and NASH at our institution from January 2000 to April 2011 were analyzed.All explanted liver histology and pre-transplant liver biopsies were examined by two specialist liver histopathologists.Patient demographics,disease free survival,explant liver characteristics and HCC features(tumour number,cumulative tumour size,vascular invasion and differentiation) were compared between HCV and NASH liver transplant recipients.RESULTS:A total of 102 patients with NASH and 283 patients with HCV were transplanted.The incidence of HCC in NASH transplant recipients was 16.7%(17/102).The incidence of HCC in HCV transplant recipients was 22.6%(64/283).Patients with NASH-HCC were statistically older than HCV-HCC patients(P < 0.001).A significantly higher proportion of HCV-HCC patients had vascular invasion(23.4% vs 6.4%,P = 0.002) and poorly differentiated HCC(4.7% vs 0%,P < 0.001) compared to the NASH-HCC group.A trend of poorer recurrence free survival at 5 years was seen in HCV-HCC patients compared to NASH-HCC who underwent a Liver transplantation(P = 0.11).CONCLUSION:Patients transplanted for NASH-HCC appear to have less aggressive tumour features compared to those with HCV-HCC,which likely in part accounts for their improved recurrence free survival.Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro Kris P Croome Martin Drage Nathalie Sela Jeremy Parfitt Natasha Chandok Paul Marotta Cheryl Dale William Wall Douglas Quan 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,31:5
12Trans-Golgi Network-An Intersection of Trafficking Cell Wall Components显示文摘The cell wall,a crucial cell compartment,is composed of a network of polysaccharides and proteins,providing structural support and protection from external stimuli.While the cell wall structure and biosynthesis have been extensively studied,very little is known about the transport of polysaccharides and other components into the developing cell wall.This review focuses on endomembrane trafficking pathways involved in cell wall deposition.Cellulose synthase complexes are assembled in the Golgi,and are transported in vesicles to the plasma membrane.Non-cellulosic polysaccharides are synthesized in the Golgi apparatus,whereas cellulose is produced by enzyme complexes at the plasma membrane.Polysac-charides and enzymes that are involved in cell wall modification and assembly are transported by distinct vesicle types to their destinations;however,the precise mechanisms involved in selection,sorting and delivery remain to be identified.The endomembrane system orchestrates the delivery of Golgi-derived and possibly endocytic vesicles carrying cell wall and cell membrane components to the newly-formed cell plate.However,the nature of these vesicles,their membrane compositions,and the timing of their delivery are largely unknown.Emerging technologies such as chemical genomics and proteomics are promising avenues to gain insight into the trafficking of cell wall components.Natasha Worden Eunsook Park Georgia Drakakaki 2012Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2012,54,11:5

14Recurrent aggressive mesenteric desmoid tumor successfully treated with sorafenib: A case report and literature review显示文摘BACKGROUND Desmoid tumors(DT) are locally advanced but histologically benign monoclonal neoplasms that can occur from any musculoaponeurotic structure. The aim of this report is to analyze a rare clinical case of an aggressive intra-abdominal DT successfully treated with sorafenib.CASE SUMMARY A 36-year-old man presented with increasing colicky abdominal pain and a selfpalpable mass in his left abdomen. Fourteen years earlier he was diagnosed with a large intra-abdominal tumor, which adhered to the left colonic flexure, part of the major gastric curvature and the spleen. Subsequent exploratory laparotomy revealed a voluminous mass in the epigastrium, arising from the posterior surface of the stomach and invading the superior mesenteric vessels, transverse mesocolon and the small bowel mesentery. As the tumor was unresectable, a jejunojejunal bypass was performed. Traditional therapeutic interventions proved insufficient, and the patient was started on sorafenib with a subsequent fulldisease response.CONCLUSIONDT's pathogenesis has been associated with mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli(APC) gene or beta-catenin gene CTNNB1, sex steroids or previous surgical trauma. Local treatment modalities, such as surgery or radiotherapy, are implemented in aggressively progressing or symptomatic patients. 18Tear biomarkers for keratoconus显示文摘Keratoconus is a progressive corneal thinning,ectatic condition,which affects vision.Recent advances in corneal topography measurements has helped advance proper diagnosis of this condition and increased research and clinical interests in the disease etiopathogenesis.Considerable progress has been achieved in understanding the progression of the disease and tear fluid has played a major role in the progress.This review discusses the importance of tear fluid as a source of biomarker for keratoconus and how advances in technology have helped map the complexity of tears and thereby molecular readouts of the disease.Expanding knowledge of the tear proteome,lipidome and metabolome opened up new avenues to study keratoconus and to identify probable prognostic or diagnostic biomarkers for the disease.A multidimensional approach of analyzing tear fluid of patients layering on proteomics,lipidomics and metabolomics is necessary in effectively decoding keratoconus and thereby identifying targets for its treatment.Krishnatej Nishtala Natasha Pahuja Rohit Shetty Rudy M.M.A.Nuijts Arkasubhra Ghosh 2016Eye and Vision2016,3,1:4

20Soil and water conservation measures improve soil carbon sequestration and soil quality under cashews显示文摘Land degradation is becoming a serious problem in the west coast region of India where one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots,the‘Western Ghats’,is present.Poor land management practices and high rainfall have led to increasing problems associated with land degradation.A long-term(13-year)experiment was done to evaluate the impact of soil and water conservation measures on soil carbon sequestration and soil quality at three different depths under cashew nut cultivation on a 19%slope.Five soil and water conservation measures-continuous contour trenches,staggered contour trenches,halfmoon terraces,semi-elliptical trenches,and graded trenches all with vegetative barriers of Stylosanthes scabra and Vetiveria zizanoides and control were evaluated for their influence on soil properties,carbon sequestration,and soil quality under cashews.The soil and water conservation measures improved significantly the soil organic carbon,soil organic carbon stock,carbon sequestration rate and microbial activity compared to the control condition(without any measures).Among the measures tested,continuous contour trenches with vegetative barriers outperformed the others with respect to soil organic carbon stock,sequestration rate,and microbial activity.The lower metabolic quotient with the measures compared to the control indicated alleviation of environmental stress on microbes.Using principal component analysis and a correlation matrix,a minimum dataset was identified as the soil available nitrogen,bulk density,basal soil respiration,soil pH,acid phosphatase activity,and soil available boron and these were the most important soil properties controlling the soil quality.Four soil quality indices using two summation methods(additive and weighted)and two scoring methods(linear and non-linear)were developed using the minimum dataset.A linear weighted soil quality index was able to statistically differentiate the effect of soil and water conservation measures from that of the control.The highest value of the soil quality index of 0.98 was achieved with continuous contour trenches with a vegetative barrier.The results of the study indicate that soil and water conservation measures for cashews are a potential strategy to improve the soil carbon sequestration and soil quality along with improving crop productivity and reducing the erosion losses.Gopal Ramdas Mahajan Bappa Das Sandrasekaran Manivannan Begur Lakshminarasimha Manjunath Ram Ratan Verma Sujeet Desai Rahul Mukund Kulkarni Ashish Marotrao Latare Reshma Sale Dayesh Murgaonkar Kiran Puna Patel Shaiesh Morajkar Ashwini Desai Natasha Barnes Heena Mulla 2021International Journal of Sediment Research2021,36,2:4
