| 2 | Responses of Soil Microbial Community Structure and Diversity to Agricultural Deintensification显示文摘Using a scheme of agricultural fields with progressively less intensive management (deintensification), different manage- ment practices in six agroecosystems located near Goldsboro, NC, USA were tested in a large-scale experiment, including two cash-grain cropping systems employing either tillage (CT) or no-tillage (NT), an organic farming system (OR), an integrated cropping system with animals (IN), a successional field (SU), and a plantation woodlot (WO). Microbial phos- pholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles and substrate utilization patterns (BIOLOG ECO plates) were measured to examine the effects of deintensification on the structure and diversity of soil microbial communities. Principle component analyses of PLFA and BIOLOG data showed that the microbial community structure diverged among the soils of the six systems. Lower microbial diversity was found in lowly managed ecosystem than that in intensive and moderately managed agro- ecosystems, and both fungal contribution to the total identified PLFAs and the ratio of microbial biomass C/N increased along with agricultural deintensification. Significantly higher ratios of C/N (P < 0.05) were found in the WO and SU systems, and for fungal/bacterial PLFAs in the WO system (P < 0.05). There were also significant decreases (P < 0.05) along with agricultural deintensification for contributions of total bacterial and gram positive (G+) bacterial PLFAs. | 4 | GIS-based risk analysis of debris flow:an application in Sichuan,southwest China显示文摘Debris flow is a serious geologic hazard in China.It is estimated that nationally debris flows cause up to 2 billion RMB(250 million US$) in damages and 300-600 deaths and injuries annually.To mitigate debris flow hazards,it is necessary to map,model,and identify zones of debris flow hazards and vulnerability as to inform the local people about the potential risk with a geographic information system.This research presents a regional scale case study modeling debris flow risk(hazard and vulnerability) in Sichuan Province,Southwestern China.In this area,3,290 debris flows have been identified and the spatial-temporal distribution and activity characteristics of them have been documented.Based on the available meteorological data,a Digital Elevation Model with the rate of 1:250,000 and a regional geological map,the 24-hr rainfall threshold(y) for debris flow occurrence is closely related(significant at 99% confidence level) to the index(x) defined using a geology factor(rock hardness:a) and a topographical factor(channel gradient:d) where y = 21 + 10200 / x,in which x = 2.7 × ea + 1000 × d.The discipline is constructive in developing the rainfall threshold for debris flow activity in remote mountainous areas that lack data.For a given watershed,a four-level debris flow hazard map is developed by comparing the rainfall threshold to the design rainfall intensities with 50-,20-,and 5-year average recurrence intervals,respectively.The degree of debris flow vulnerability is determined by the watershed socio-economic conditions.A four-class debris flow risk map,at the final phase of the research,is generated by combining debris flow hazards and vulnerability.With the debris flow risk assessment,the Sichuan Province is classified into the slight,moderate,severe and very severe regions,which accounts for 36%,19%,20% and 25% of total area respectively. | B. | 10 | Anaerobic Removal of Trace Organic Contaminants in Sewage Sludge: 15 Years of Experience显示文摘Trace organic contaminants (TOCs) correspond to a broad range of molecules generated either directly or indirectly by human activity. Even though TOCs are found at low concentrations in the environment, they often accumulate by biomagnification and bioaccumulation into biological organisms and cause irreversible damages in biological systems through direct or indirect toxic effects such as endocrine disruption and tumour initiation. This manuscript presents the main findings of over fifteen years of research focusing on biological removal of various TOCs found in sewage sludge from urban treatment plants. A special focus of the research was made on microbial processes in complex anaerobic ecosystems. Four families of compounds mostly retrieved in urban plants were studied: the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), the phthalic acid esters (PAEs), and the nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). It was observed that the microbial capability for removing low amounts of TOCs required a long adaptation time and was often limited by the bioavailability of these compounds. In fact, the overall biodegradation resulted from the numerous interactions existing between the matrix (organic matter) and the microbial ecosystems according to the physico-chemical sorption properties of these compounds. Mechanistic aspects were also tackled in depth and specific models were developed for better understanding the network of interactions between TOCs, microorganisms, and organic matter. These findings could be extrapolated to other ecosystems such as soils and sediments. Finally, it was shown that microbial cometabolism was essential for TOC removal, and the concept of bioavailability was not only dependent on the nature, the level, and the sorption properties of TOCs but was also strongly dependent on the nature and the concentration of the sludge organic matter. Specific parameters were proposed for better evaluating the fate of TOCs in microbial anaerobic processes and technological solutions for efficient removal of these compounds were also proposed. | M. | 14 | K-ATP channel openers facilitate glutamate uptake by GluTs in rat primary cultured Astrocytes显示文摘Increasing evidence, including from our laboratory, has revealed that opening of ATP sensitive potassium channels(K-ATP channels) plays the neuronal protective roles both in vivo and in vitro. Thus K-ATP channel openers(KCOs) have been proposed as potential neuroprotectants. Our previous studies demonstrated that K-ATP channels could regulate glutamate uptake activity in PC12 cells as well as in synaptosomes of rats. Since glutamate transporters(GluTs) of astrocytes play crucial roles in glutamate uptake and KATP channels are also expressed in astrocytes, the present study showed whether and how KATP channels regulated the function of GluTs in primary cultured astrocytes. The results showed that nonselective KCO pinacidil, selective mitochondrial KCO diazoxide, novel, and blood-brain barrier permeable KCO iptakalim could enhance glutamate uptake, except for the sarcolemmal KCO P1075. Moreover pinacidil, diazoxide, and iptakalim reversed the inhibition of glutamate uptake induced by 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium(MPP+). These potentiated effects were completely abolished by mitochondrial K-ATP blocker 5-hydroxydecanoate. Furthermore, either diazoxide or iptakalim could inhibit MPP+-induced elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phosphorylation of protein kinases C(PKC). These findings are the first to demonstrate that activation of K-ATP channel, especially mitochondrial K-ATP channel, improves the function of GluTs in astrocytes due to reducing ROS production and downregulating PKC phosphorylation. | 15 | Field trial of an HTS filter system on a CDMA base station显示文摘This paper presents the field trial results of a high temperature superconductor filter system (HTSFS) in a code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile communication base station (BTS) in Tangshan, China. The center frequency of the HTSFS is 830 MHz with 1.4% fractional bandwidth. The noise figure (NF) of the HTSFS, including connectors and cables, is 0.8 dB. The field trial results show that after the HTSFS was installed in the receiver front-end of a CDMA base station, the transmitting power of handset was decreased by 3.1 dB on average. | 19 | A short-chain α-neurotoxin from Naja naja atra produces potent cholinergic-dependent analgesia显示文摘Objective To investigate the analgesia induced by cobrotoxin (CT) from venom of Naja naja atra, and the effects of atropine and naloxone on the antinociceptive activity of CT in rodent pain models. Methods CT was administered intraperitoneally (33.3,50,7μg/kg) , intra-cerebral venticularly (2.4μg /kg) or microinjected into periaque-ductal gray (PAG,1.2μg /kg). The antinociceptive action was tested using the hot-plate test and the acetic acid writhing test in mice and rats. The involvement of cholinergic system and the opioid system in CT-induced analgesia was examined by pretreatment of animals with atropine (0.5mg/kg, im or 10mg/kg, ip) or naloxone (3mg/kg,ip) . The effect of CT on motor activity was tested using the Animex test. Results CT (33.3,50 and 75μg/kg,ip) exhibited a dose-dependent analgesic action in mice as determined with hot-plate test and acetic acid writhing test. In the mouse acetic acid writhing test, the intra-cerebral ventricle administration of CT 2.4μg/kg (1/23th of a systemic dose) produced marked analgesic effects. Microinjection of CT 1.2μg/kg (1/46th of systemic dose) into the PAG also elicited a robust analgesic action in the hot-plate test in rats. Atropine at 0.5 mg/kg (im) or naloxone at 3 mg/kg (ip) failed to block the analgesic effects of CT, but atropine at 10 mg/kg (ip) did antagonize the analgesia mediated by CT in the mouse acetic acid writhing test. At the highest effective dose of antinociception (75μg/kg) , CT did not change the spontaneous mobility of mice. Conclusion These results suggest that CT from Naja naja atra venom has analgesic effects. Central nervous system may be involved in CT' analgesic effects and the PAG may be the primary central site where CT exerts its effects.
