1Prevalence of non-Helicobacter pylori duodenal ulcer in Karachi,Pakistan显示文摘AIM: To determine the prevalence of non-Helicobacter pylori (H pylori)-related duodenal ulcer in patients with acid-peptic diseases.METHODS: Medical records of patients who attended the Gastroenterology Department at Aga Khan University Hospital from 1999 to 2001 and had endoscopic diagnosis of duodenal ulcers were reviewed. Duodenal ulcer associated with H pylori was diagnosed on the basis of endoscopy, rapid urease test and histopathology whereas histories of aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) related duodenal ulcers. Non-H pylori, non-NSAID duodenal ulcers were those without H pylori infection and history of NSAID intake. Co-morbid conditions associated were noted.RESULTS: Of 2 260 patients, 10% (217/2 260) had duodenal ulcer. Duodenal ulcer related to H pylori infectionaccounted for 53% (116/217), NSAID-related 10% (22/217),non-H pylori non-NSAID 29% (62/217), and 8% (17/217) had both Hpyloriinfection and histories of NSAID intake. Fifteen percent (18/116)_patients had past histories of peptic ulcer disease in Hpyloriinfection, while 8% (5/62) in non-Hpylorinon-NSAID ulcer. Co-morbid conditions in H pylori infection were seen in 23% (27/116) and 34%(21/62) in non-H pylori non-NSAID ulcer.CONCLUSION: Incidence of H pylori infection related with duodenal ulcer is common. In the presence of co-morbids, non-Hpyloriand non-NSAID duodenal ulcer is likely to be present.Javed Yakoob Wasim Jafri Nadim Jafri Muhammad Islam Shahab Abid Saeed Hamid Hasnain AliShah Hizbullah Shaikh 2005World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,23:6
2Carbon-coated manganese dioxide nanoparticles and their enhanced electrochemical properties for zinc-ion battery applications显示文摘In this study, we report the cost-effective and simple synthesis of carbon-coated α-MnO_2nanoparticles(α-MnO_2@C) for use as cathodes of aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs) for the first time. α-MnO_2@C was prepared via a gel formation, using maleic acid(C_4H_4O_4) as the carbon source, followed by annealing at low temperature of 270 °C. A uniform carbon network among the α-MnO_2 nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy. When tested in a zinc cell, the α-MnO_2@C exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of 272 m Ah/g under 66 m A/g current density compared to 213 m Ah/g, at the same current density, displayed by the pristine sample. Further, α-MnO_2@C demonstrated superior cycleability compared to the pristine samples. This study may pave the way for the utilizing carbon-coated MnO_2 electrodes for aqueous ZIB applications and thereby contribute to realizing high performance eco-friendly batteries.Saiful Islam Muhammad Hilmy Alfaruqi Jinju Song Sungjin Kim Duong Tung Pham Jeonggeun Jo Seokhun Kim Vinod Mathew Joseph Paul Baboo Zhiliang Xiu Jaekook Kim 2017Journal of Energy Chemistry2017,26,4:6
3Gastric juice for the diagnosis of H pylori infection in patients on proton pump inhibitors显示文摘AIM: To determine the efficacy of gastric juice polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of H pylori infection in comparison with histology and gastric antral biopsy PCR in patients on a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). METHODS: Eighty-five consecutive patients with dyspeptic symptoms were enrolled. Gastric biopsies for histology, PCR and gastric juice were collected at endoscopy for PCR of the H pylori urease C gene (ure C). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy, positive and negative likelihood ratio for PCR of gastric juice for the H pylori ure C gene was compared to histology and gastric antral biopsy H pylori ure C PCR in patients with and without PPI. RESULTS: Gastric juice PCR was positive in 66 (78%) patients. Histology showed H pylori associated gastritis in 57 (67%). Gastric biopsy PCR was positive in 72 (85%). In patients not taking PPI, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, accuracy and positive and negative likelihood ratio for gastric juice PCR were 89%, 72%, 91%, 67%, 90%, 85%, 3.1 and 0.1 respectively. In patients on PPI these values were 86%, 100%%, 100%, 29%, 86%, 9.5 and 1.4, respectively. CONCLUSION: Gastric juice PCR for the diagnosis of H pylori infection has increased sensitivity compared to histology with PPI. The use of gastric juice PCR is recommended to confirm H pylori status in patients taking PPIs.Javed Yakoob Shahid Rasool Zaigham Abbas Wasim Jafri Shahab Abid Muhammad Islam Zubair Ahmad 2008World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,10:4

5Location-allocation modeling for emergency evacuation planning with GIS and remote sensing:A case study of Northeast Bangladesh显示文摘This work developed models to identify optimal spatial distribution of emergency evacuation centers(EECs)such as schools, colleges, hospitals, and fire stations to improve flood emergency planning in the Sylhet region of northeastern Bangladesh. The use of location-allocation models(LAMs)for evacuation in regard to flood victims is essential to minimize disaster risk.In the first step, flood susceptibility maps were developed using machine learning models(MLMs),including:Levenberg-Marquardt back propagation(LM-BP)neural network and decision trees(DT)and multi-criteria decision making(MCDM)method.Performance of the MLMs and MCDM techniques were assessed considering the area under the receiver operating characteristic(AUROC)curve.Mathematical approaches in a geographic information system(GIS)for four well-known LAM problems affecting emergency rescue time are proposed:maximal covering location problem(MCLP),the maximize attendance(MA),p-median problem(PMP),and the location set covering problem(LSCP).The results showed that existing EECs were not optimally distributed, and that some areas were not adequately served by EECs(i.e.,not all demand points could be reached within a 60-min travel time). We concluded that the proposed models can be used to improve planning of the distribution of EECs,and that application of the models could contribute to reducing human casualties, property losses, and improve emergency operation.Mahfuzur Rahman Ningsheng Chen MdMonirul Islam Ashraf Dewan Hamid Reza Pourghasemi Rana Muhammad AliWashakh Nirdesh Nepal Shufeng Tian Hamid Faiz Mehtab Alam Naveed Ahmed 2021Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,3:3
6Flooding and its relationship with land cover change, population growth, and road density显示文摘Bangladesh experiences frequent hydro-climatic disasters such as flooding. These disasters are believed to be associated with land use changes and climate variability. However, identifying the factors that lead to flooding is challenging. This study mapped flood susceptibility in the northeast region of Bangladesh using Bayesian regularization back propagation(BRBP)neural network, classification and regression trees(CART),a statistical model(STM)using the evidence belief function(EBF),and their ensemble models(EMs)for three time periods(2000,2014,and 2017).The accuracy of machine learning algorithms(MLAs),STM,and EMs were assessed by considering the area under the curve—receiver operating characteristic(AUC-ROC).Evaluation of the accuracy levels of the aforementioned algorithms revealed that EM4(BRBP-CART-EBF)outperformed(AUC>90%)standalone and other ensemble models for the three time periods analyzed.Furthermore, this study investigated the relationships among land cover change(LCC),population growth(PG),road density(RD),and relative change of flooding(RCF)areas for the period between 2000 and 2017.The results showed that areas with very high susceptibility to flooding increased by 19.72%between 2000 and 2017,while the PG rate increased by 51.68%over the same period. The Pearson correlation coefficient for RCF and RD was calculated to be 0.496.These findings highlight the significant association between floods and causative factors. The study findings could be valuable to policymakers and resource managers as they can lead to improvements in flood management and reduction in flood damage and risks.Mahfuzur Rahman Chen Ningsheng Golam Iftekhar Mahmud Md Monirul Islam Hamid Reza Pourghasemi Hilal Ahmad Jules Maurice Habumugisha Rana Muhammad Ali Washakh Mehtab Alam Enlong Liu Zheng Han Huayong Ni Tian Shufeng Ashraf Dewan 2021Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,6:3
7Association of post-traumatic stress disorder and work performance: A survey from an emergency medical service, Karachi, Pakistan显示文摘BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to explore the association between posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and work performance of emergency medical services personnel in Karachi, Pakistan.METHODS: Emergency medical service personnel were screened for potential PTSD using Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-R). Work performance was assessed on the basis of fi ve variables: number of late arrivals to work, number of days absent, number of days sick, adherence to protocol, and patient satisfaction over a period of 3 months. In order to model outcomes like the number of late arrivals to work, days absent and days late, negative binomial regression was applied, whereas logistic regression was applied for adherence to protocol and linear for patient satisfaction scores.RESULTS: Mean scores of PTSD were 24.0±12.2. No association was found between PTSD and work performance measures: number of late arrivals to work(RRadj 0.99; 0.98–1.00), days absent(RRadj 0.98; 0.96–0.99), days sick(RRadj 0.99; 0.98–1.00), adherence to protocol(ORadj 1.01; 0.99–1.04) and patient satisfaction(β 0.001%–0.03%) after adjusting for years of formal schooling, living status, coping mechanism, social support, working hours, years of experience and anxiety or depression.CONCLUSION: No statistically significant association was found between PTSD and work performance amongst EMS personnel in Karachi, Pakistan.Salima Kerai Omrana Pasha Uzma Khan Muhammad Islam Nargis Asad Junaid Razzak 2017World Journal of Emergency Medicine2017,8,3:3
8Comparative investigation of the free radical scavenging potential and anticancer property of Diospyros blancoi(Ebenaceae)显示文摘Objective: To investigate the comparative effects of Diospyros blancoi(Ebenaceae)leaves(DBL), root bark(DBRB) and stem bark(DBSB) on free radicals and cancer. Methods: The polyphenol contents, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties were determined using standard spectrophotometric methods. Cytotoxicity and anticancer activities were performed on brine shrimp nauplii and Ehrlich ascite carcinoma cells, respectively. Results: Among the extracts, DBSB showed the highest total antioxidant capacity and reducing capacity on ferrous ion. Based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, DBSB showed(95.760 ± 0.343)% and(67.460 ± 2.641)%scavenging with IC50of(3.10 ± 0.17) and(50.00 ± 3.11) mg/m L, respectively. The IC50 values of standard butylated hydroxytoluene and catechin(CA) for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radicals were(8.50 ± 0.25) and(75.00 ± 0.14) mg/m L,respectively suggesting that DBSB had a significant(P < 0.05) radical scavenging activity than standards. In lipid peroxidation inhibition assay, the inhibitory activity of the extracts and the standard was in the following order: DBSB > DBRB > CA > DBL.Also, the phenolic [(139.91 ± 3.924) mg gallic acid equivalent/g] and flavonoid contents[(412.00 ± 16.70) mg catechin equivalent/g)] of DBSB were higher than that of other extracts. In addition, the DBSB showed the moderate cytotoxic and anticancer properties. Conclusions: Our results indicate that Diospyros blancoi stem bark had the significant highest antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties as well as moderate anticancer activity.Hence, we assume that the anticancer activity of this plant can be, at least in part, attributed to its content in phenolic compounds as well as its significant free radical scavenging properties.Muhammad Ali Khan Mahbubur Rahman Nazmul Sardar Saiful Islam Arman Badrul Islam Jahangir Alam Khandakar Mamunur Rashid Golam Sadik AHM Khurshid Alam 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,5:3

115-Aminolevulinic acid alleviates herbicide-induced physiological and ultrastructural changes in Brassica napus显示文摘It is well known that application of 5-aminolevulinic acid(ALA) could promote the plant growth under abiotic stress in oilseed rape(Brassica napus L.). However, the specifics of its physiological and ultrastructural regulation under herbicide stress conditions are poorly understood. In the present study, alleviating role of ALA in B. napus was investigated under four levels of herbicide propyl 4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy) benzylamino) benzoate(ZJ0273)(0, 100, 200 and 500 mg L–1) with or without 1 mg L–1 ALA treated for 48 or 72 h. Results showed that after 48 h of herbicide stress, the growth of rape seedlings was significantly inhibited with the successive increases of the ZJ0273 concentrations from 0 to 500 mg L–1, but this inhibition was obviously alleviated by exogenous application of ALA. However, when treatment time prolonged to 72 h, the recovery effects of ALA could not be evaluated due to the death of plants treated with the highest concentration of ZJ0273(500 mg L-1). Further, the root oxidizability and activities of antioxidant enzymes(superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase) were dramatically enhanced by the application of 1 mg L–1 ALA under herbicide stress. Therefore, plants treated with ALA dynamically modulated their antioxidant defenses to reduce reactive oxygen species(ROS) accumulation and malondialdehyde(MDA) content induced by herbicide stress. Additionally, exogenously applied ALA improved the ultrastructure's of chloroplast, mitochondria and nucleus, and induced the production of stress proteins. Our results suggest that ALA could be considered as a potential plant growth regulator for the improvement of herbicide tolerance through alleviation of the physiological and ultrastructural changes induced by the herbicide in crop production.XU Ling Faisal Islam ZHANG Wen-fang Muhammad A Ghani Basharat Ali 2018Journal of Integrative Agriculture2018,17,3:2

17Correlations among oligonucleotide repeats, nucleotide substitutions, and insertion-deletion mutations in chloroplast genomes of plant family Malvaceae显示文摘The co-occurrence of mutational events including substitutions and insertions—deletions(InDels)with oligonucleotide repeats has previously been reported for a limited number of prokaryotic, eukaryotic, and organelle genomes. In this study, the correlations among these mutational events in chloroplast genomes of species in the eudicot family Malvaceae were investigated. This study also reported chloroplast genome sequences of Hibiscus mutabilis,Malva parvifJora, and Malvastrum coromandelianum. These three genomes and 16 other publicly available chloroplast genomes from 12 genera of Malvaceae were used to calculate the correlation coefficients among the mutational events at干amily, subfamily, and genus levels. In these comparisons, chloroplast genomes were pairwise aligned to record the substitutions and the InDels in mutually exclusive,250 nucleotide long bins.Taking one among the two genomes as a reference, the coordinate positions of oligonucleotide repeats in the reference genome were recorded. The extent of correlations among repeats, substitutions, and InDels was calculated and categorized as follows:very weak(0.1-0.19),weak(0.20-0.29),moderate(0.30-0.39),and strong(0.4-0.69).The extent of correlations ranged 0.201-0.6 between^InDels and single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP),'0.182-0.513 between“InDels and repeat,”and 0.055-0.403 between“SNPs and repeats.”At family-and subfamily-level comparisons,88%-96%of the repeats showed co-occurrence with SNPs,whereas at the genus level,23%-86%of the repeats co-occurred with SNPs in same bins. Our findings support the previous hypothesis suggesting the use of oligonucleotide repeats as a proxy for finding the mutational hotspots.Abdullah Furrukh Mehmood Iram Shahzadi Zain Ali Madiha Islam Muhammad Naeem Bushra Mirza Peter JLockhart Ibrar Ahmed Mohammad Tahir Waheed 2021Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,2:1

202D Carbon Fiber Reinforced High Density Polyethylene Multi-Layered Laminated Composite Panels:Structural,Mechanical,Thermal, and Morphological Profile显示文摘Carbon fiber reinforced high density polyethylene multi-layered laminated composite panels(HDPE/CF MLCP) with excellent in-plane properties along transverse direction have been formulated. Composite architectures with carbon fiber(CF) designed in 2D layout in conventional composites can alleviate their properties in thickness direction, but all attempts so far developed have achieved restrained success. Here,we have exposed an approach to the high strength composite challenge, without altering the 2D stack design on the basis of concept of fiber reinforced laminated composites that would provide enhanced mechanical and thermal properties along transverse direction. CF sheets allowed the buckling of adjoining plies in 2D MLCP. We fabricated 2D MLCP by stacking the alternative CF and HDPE layers under different loading conditions, which resulted in high strength composites. These plies of CF and HDPE served as unit cells for MLCP, with CF offering much-needed fracture toughness and hardness to these materials. For 2D HDPE/CF MLCP, we demonstrated noteworthy improvement in physical and chemical interaction between CF and HDPE, in-plane fracture strain, flexural strength(30.684 MPa), bending modulus(7436.254 MPa), thermal stability(40.94%), and surface morphology, upon increasing the CF layers up to twenty, enabling these composites truly for high temperature and high strength applications.Shahzad Maqsood Khan Nafisa Gull Muhammad Azeem Munawar Atif Islam Saba Zia Muhammad Shafiq Aneela Sabir Syed Muhammad Awais Muhammad Arif Butt Muhammad Taqi Zahid Butt Tahir Jamil 2016Journal of Materials Science & Technology2016,32,10:1
