| 1 | Recent Advances in the Modelling and Analysis of Opinion Dynamics on Influence Networks显示文摘A fundamental aspect of society is the exchange and discussion of opinions between individuals, occurring in situations as varied as company boardrooms, elementary school classrooms and online social media. After a very brief introduction to the established results of the most fundamental opinion dynamics models, which seek to mathematically capture observed social phenomena, a brief discussion follows on several recent themes pursued by the authors building on the fundamental ideas. In the first theme, we study the way an individual′s self-confidence can develop through contributing to discussions on a sequence of topics, reaching a consensus in each case,where the consensus value to some degree reflects the contribution of that individual to the conclusion. During this process, the individuals in the network and the way they interact can change. The second theme introduces a novel discrete-time model of opinion dynamics to study how discrepancies between an individual′s expressed and private opinions can arise due to stubbornness and a pressure to conform to a social norm. It is also shown that a few extremists can create 'pluralistic ignorance', where people believe there is majority support for a position but in fact the position is privately rejected by the majority. Last, we consider a group of individuals discussing a collection of logically related topics. | 3 | Association of systemic inflammation and body mass index with survival in patients with resectable gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinomas显示文摘Objective:The systemic inflammation index and body mass index(BMI)are easily accessible markers that can predict mortality.However,the prognostic value of the combined use of these two markers remains unclear.The goal of this study was therefore to evaluate the association of these markers with outcomes based on a large cohort of patients with gastric cancer.Methods:A total of 2,542 consecutive patients undergoing radical surgery for gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma between 2009 and 2014 were included.Systemic inflammation was quantified by the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR).High systemic inflammation was defined as NLR≥3,and underweight was defined as BMI<18.5 kg/m2.Results:Among 2,542 patients,NLR≥3 and underweight were common[627(25%)and 349(14%),respectively].In the entire cohort,NLR≥3 or underweight independently predicted overall survival(OS)[hazard ratio(HR):1.236,95%confidence interval(95%CI):1.069–1.430;and HR:1.600,95%CI:1.350–1.897,respectively]and recurrence-free survival(RFS)(HR:1.230,95%CI:1.054–1.434;and HR:1.658,95%CI:1.389–1.979,respectively).Patients with both NLR≥3 and underweight(vs.neither)had much worse OS(HR:2.445,95%CI:1.853–3.225)and RFS(HR:2.405,95%CI:1.802–3.209).Furthermore,we observed similar results in subgroup analyses according to pathological stage,age,and postoperative chemotherapy.Conclusions:Our results showed that preoperative elevated NLR and decreased BMI had a significant negative effect on survival.Underweight combined with severe inflammation could enhance prognostication.Taking active therapeutic measures to reduce inflammation and increase nutrition may help improve outcomes. | Xianchun Gao Yanan Pan Weili Han Caie Hu Chenchen Wang Ling Chen Yong Guo Yupeng Shi Yan Pan Huahong Xie Liping Yao Jianjun Yang Jianyong Zheng Xiaohua Li Xiaonan Liu Liu Hong Jipeng Li Mengbin Li Gang Ji Zengshan Li Jielai Xia Qingchuan Zhao Daiming Fan Kaichun Wu Yongzhan Nie | 2021 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2021,18,1: | 2 |
| 4 | Application of a novel constrained wavelet threshold denoising method in ensemble-based background-error variance显示文摘A more efficient noise filtering technique is needed in ensemble data assimilation, to improve traditional spectral filtering methods that cannot reflect the local characteristics of spatial scales. In this paper, we present the design of a novel constrained wavelet threshold denoising method(CWTDNM) by introducing an improved threshold value and a new constraining parameter.The proposed method aims to filter noise swamped over different scales. We prepared an ideal experiment object based on the two-dimensional barotropic vorticity equation. A suitable wavelet basis function(i.e., Db11) and the optimal number of decomposition levels(i.e., five) were first selected. The results show that, given the wavelet coefficients are constrained by the parameter, the CWTDNM can produce better filtering results with the smallest root mean square error(RMSE) compared to similar methods. In addition, the filtering accuracy of 10 ensemble sample variances using the CWTDNM is equivalent to that estimated directly from 80 ensemble samples, but with the runtime reduced to approximately one-seventh. | 11 | Effects of different states of sheep fetal fibroblasts as donor cells on the early development in vitro of reconstructed sheep embryos显示文摘To investigate the effects of different states of donor cells on the development of reconstructed sheep embryos, we designed five treatments of donor cells, including cell passage, cell size, serum starvation, colchicine treatment and gene transfection. Results are as follows: (Ⅰ) Compared with 16-18 passage cells, the morula/blastocyst rate of 5-7 passage cells as donor nuclei was significantly higher (17.3% vs. 4.9%, P<0.05), suggesting the advantage of short-time cultured cells in supporting the development of reconstructed embryos. (Ⅱ) The morula/blastocyst rate of reconstructed embryos derived from medium cells (15-25μm) as donor nuclei was higher than that from large cells (25-33μm) and small cells (8-15μm)( 20.0% vs. 8.0%, 9.7%), indicating that reconstructed embryos from medium cells had a greater potentiality to develop into morula/blastocysts than those from small or large ones. (Ⅲ) The morula/blastocyst rate of reconstructed embryos from donor cells of SS (serum starvation) was lower than that from donor cells of NSS (non-serum starvation), but no significant difference was detected between SS and NSS(11.8% vs. 18.6%, P>0.05). (Ⅳ) Fetal fibroblasts treated with 0.05μmol/L colchicine exhibited a higher morula/blastocyst rate of reconstructed embryos than those treated with 0.10 μmol/L colchicine and untreated ones (27.5% vs. 12.1%, 17.1%), however, no significant difference among the three treatments was detected (P>0.05). (Ⅴ) The morula/blastocyst rate of reconstructed embryos from fetal fibroblasts transfected with GFP gene only was 3.1%, significantly lower than that from non-transgenic cells (3.1% vs. 20.4%, P<0.05). In conclusion, our results demonstrated that fetal fibroblasts of fewer passages, medium size could ensure a higher morula/blastocyst rate of reconstructed embryos. Serum starvation of donor cells might be unnecessary to the development of reconstructed embryos. Donor cells treated with 0.05μmol/L colchicine could facilitate the development of reconstructed embryos. Additionally, as cells transfected with GFP gene were used as donor nuclei, adverse effect on the development of reconstructed embryos was observed. | 17 | Assimilation of ASCAT Sea Surface Wind Retrievals with Correlated Observation Errors显示文摘Data assimilation systems usually assume that the observation errors of wind components, i.e., u(the longitudinal component) and v(the latitudinal component), are uncorrelated. However, since wind components are derived from observations in the form of wind speed and direction(spd and dir), the observation errors of u and v are correlated. In this paper, an explicit expression of the observation errors and correlation for each pair of wind components are derived based on the law of error propagation. The new data assimilation scheme considering the correlated error of wind components is implemented in the Weather Research and Forecasting Data Assimilation(WRFDA) system. Besides, adaptive quality control(QC) is introduced to retain the information of high wind-speed observations. | 19 | The Influence of Arctic Sea Ice Concentration Perturbations on Subseasonal Predictions of North Atlantic Oscillation Events显示文摘The influence of Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC) on the subseasonal prediction of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) event is investigated by utilizing the Community Atmospheric Model version 4. The optimal Arctic SIC perturbations which exert the greatest influence on the onset of an NAO event from a lead of three pentads (15 days) are obtained with a conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation approach. Numerical results show that there are two types of optimal Arctic SIC perturbations for each NAO event, with one weakening event (marked as type-1) and another strengthening event (marked as type-2). For positive NAO events, type-1 optimal SIC perturbations mainly show positive SIC anomalies in the Greenland, Barents, and Okhotsk Seas, while type-2 perturbations mainly feature negative SIC anomalies in these regions. For negative NAO events, the optimal SIC perturbations have almost opposite patterns to those in positive events, although there are some differences among these SIC perturbations due to different atmospheric initial conditions. Further diagnosis reveals that the optimal Arctic SIC perturbations first modify the surface turbulent heat flux and the temperature in the lower troposphere via diabatic processes. Afterward, the temperature in the low troposphere is mainly affected by dynamic advection. Finally, potential vorticity advection plays a crucial role in the 500-hPa geopotential height prediction in the northern North Atlantic sector during pentad 4, which influences NAO event prediction.
