Sensing and Uptake of Nitrogen in Rice Plant: A Molecular View显示文摘As a main feature of plant autotrophy, assimilation of inorganic nitrogen (N) is not only of fundamental interest to the crop, but also a crucial factor in crop productivity. N is the main plant mineral nutrient needed for chlorophyll production and other plant cell components (proteins, nucleic acids and amino acids). I highlighted the novel aspects of N responsive sensors, transporters and signaling molecules recently identified in the monocot rice plant, and discussed their potential roles in N sensing and transporting. Furthermore, over the last couple of years, N sensing has been shown to be affected by different external factors, which act as local signals to trigger systemic signaling coordinated by long-distance transport or mobile signals in plant body. Understanding of this complex regulatory network provides a foundation mechanism for the development of novel strategies to increase the acquisition and transportation efficiency of nitrogen under varying N conditions for rice production. | Md Saiful ISLAM | 2019 | Rice science2019,26,6: | 4
Nutrient dynamics in the Sundarbans mangrove estuarine system of Bangladesh under different weather and tidal cycles显示文摘Introduction:Seasonal and tidal variations in nutrient concentration and water quality were investigated in the western Sundarbans of Bangladesh during the post-monsoon,winter and monsoon seasons during 2010–2011.Methods:Water collected from the surface, middle and bottom layers at six locations of the Kholpetua-Arpangashia river system during high and low tides was analyzed for temperature, salinity,pH,dissolved oxygen(DO),total dissolved solids(TDS),electrical conductivity(EC)and dissolved nutrients(NO3–N,PO4–P,SO4 and NH3–N).Results:The study revealed that nutrient concentrations were influenced by seasonal changes.Mean nutrient levels during post-monsoon,winter and monsoon seasons, respectively, were in the following ranges:nitrate(0.06–0.40,0.06–0.46 and 0.08–0.46 mg/L);phosphate(0.09–0.18,0.05–0.42 and 0.10–0.16 mg/L);sulphate(58.71–86.14,68.68–119.01 and 78.15–136.47 mg/L)and ammonia(0.02–0.08,0.02–0.04 and 0.26–0.38 mg/L).Increased levels of PO4–P,SO4 and NH3–N and lower DO and salinity were recorded during the monsoon period. Most of the experimental sites showed higher NO3–N content during monsoon, whereas few elevated concentrations were observed during post-monsoon and winter periods.High and low tidal waters contained mean nutrient levels in the following ranges:nitrate(0.05–0.46 and 0.04–0.40 mg/L);phosphate(0.05–0.42 and 0.07–0.18 mg/L);sulphate(63.63–125.36 and 58.71–136.47 mg/L)and ammonia(0.02–0.38 and 0.02–0.37 mg/L)without following any distinct fluctuation patterns. The western part of the Sundarbans receives less freshwater input during the monsoon season than other areas of the ecosystem, which reduces the variability of nutrient levels and water quality components. Conclusions:This study provides considerable advances in understanding the seasonality of nutrient distribution with possible tidal influence. The data generated from this study will guide continuing efforts to support a sound management for coastal mangrove ecosystems. | Shak Md Bazlur Rahaman Lipton Sarder Md Sayadur Rahaman Alokesh Kumar Ghosh Sudhin Kumar Biswas SM Shahjahan Siraj Khandaker Anisul Huq Abul Farah Md Hasanuzzaman Shikder Saiful Islam | 2013 | Ecological Processes2013,2,1: | 2

Assessment of ecological risk for heavy metals in surface sediment of an urban river in a developing country显示文摘The speed of increasing threats to the riverine water resources makes it more critical to protect the health of Old Brahmaputra River ecosystems. The current study was done to investigate the concentrations, distributions, sources, and ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment from the Old Brahmaputra River,Bangladesh.Samples were collected from seven sites and analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer(ICP-MS).The results showed that mean concentrations(mg/kg)of heavy metals were in the order of nickel(Ni)(44.69)>chromium(Cr)(30.16)>lead(Pb)(19.31)>copper(Cu)(17.84)>cadmium(Cd)(3.94)>arsenic(As)(2.73).The contamination factor(CF),pollution load index(PLI),enrichment factor(EF),and geo-accumulation index(I_(geo))indicated low to moderate contamination.Toxic unit analysis revealed that the studied metals from all stations posed low risk. The sediment of the study river was uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, posing a minimal ecological risk.Cd,Cr,Ni,and Pb originated from anthropogenic sources rather than geogenic sources, and caused the severity of contamination. In this regard,pollutant-based intensive monitoring of heavy metals and holistic ecological risk assessments are required to maintain a sound and healthy aquatic environment in the river. | Md Saiful Islam Md Humayun Kabir Mir Mohammad Ali Md Towhidul Islam Asfia Niger Md Humayun Kabir Zulhilmi Ismail Sujat Ahmed Khalid A.Ibrahim Abubakr M.Idris | 2023 | International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,6: | 0
Antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic effects of the phytochemicals of whole Leucas aspera extract显示文摘Objective:To investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of whole Leucas aspera(Labiatae)(L.aspera)alcoholic extract. Methods:Whole L.aspera powder was extracted by absolute ethanol(99.50%).The ethanolic extract was subjected to antioxidant, antibacterial and brine shrimp lethality assay. Results:The extract showed potent radical scavenging effect(antioxidant)with IC_(50)value of(99.58±1.22)μg/mL which was significant(P<0.01)in comparison to ascorbic acid with IC_(50)value of(1.25±0.95)μg/mL.In case of antibacterial screening, the extract showed notable antibacterial effect against the tested microbial strains.Significant(P<0.05)zone of inhibitions against Gram positive Bacillus subtilis[(12.00±1.32)mm]and Bacillus megaterium[(13.00±1.50)mm],Staphylococcus aureus[(8.00±0.50)mm]and Gram negative Salmonella typhi[(6.00±0.50)mm],Salmonella paratyphi[(8.00±1.00)mm],Shigella dysenteriae[(9.00±1.32)mm]and Vibrio cholerae[(9.00±0.66)mm]was observed. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the extract showed the LC_(50)value as(181.68±2.15)μg/mL which was statistically significant(P<0.01)compared to positive control vincristine sulfate[LC_(50)=(0.76±0.04)μg/mL].Conclusions:The results demonstrate that the ethanolic extract of L.aspera could be used as antibacterial, pesticidal and various pharmacologic actives. | Md Atiar Rahman Md Saiful Islam | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,4: | 0
Distribution of heavy metals in water and sediment of an urban river in a developing country:A probabilistic risk assessment显示文摘River water and sediment embody environmental characteristics that give valuable eco-environmental information.Due to rapid industrialization, the aquatic environment of any urban river can be seriously polluted by heavy metals(HMs).The global concern is caused by heavy metal pollution because of its potential harm to aquatic ecosystems and human health. In the Bhairab River,Bangladesh, surface sediment concentrations of globally alarming toxic metals such as arsenic(As),chromium(Cr),cadmium(Cd),and lead(Pb)were measured to determine the ecological and human health risks of the riverine ecosystem. The average As,Cr,Cd,and Pb concentrations in water were 3.55,31.74,1.44,and 23.82 mg/L,respectively,and in sediment were 4.13,34.17,1.66,and 25.46 mg/kg,respectively.During the winter, metals in sediment were higher than during the summer. For most sediment samples, the enrichment factor(EF),contamination factor(CF),geoaccumulation index(Igeo),pollution load index(PLI)of As,Cr,Cd,and Pb indicated moderate contamination. The potential ecological risk(PER)in sediment followed the descending order of Cd>As>Pb>Cr.The contamination level of toxic metals implied that the condition is frightening and probably severely affecting the aquatic ecology of this riverine ecosystem. | Mir Mohammad Ali Saima Rahman Md Saiful Islam Md Refat Jahan Rakib Shaharior Hossen Md Zillur Rahman Tapos Kormoker Abubakr M.I.dris Khamphe Phoungthong | 2022 | International Journal of Sediment Research2022,37,2: | 0
