| 3 | Transjugular intrahepatic porto 全身的分流在老: 为门高血压的复杂并发症的减轻显示文摘 AIM:To present a dedicated series of transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunts(TIPS) in the elderly since data is sparse on this population group.METHODS:A retrospective review was performed of patients at least 65 years of age who underwent TIPS at our institutions between 1997 and 2010.Twentyfive patients were referred for TIPS.We deemed that 2 patients were not considered appropriate candidates due to their markedly advanced liver disease.Of the 23 patients suitable for TIPS,the indications for TIPS placement was portal hypertension complicated by refractory ascites alone(n = 9),hepatic hydrothorax alone(n = 2),refractory ascites and hydrothorax(n = 1),gastrointestinal bleeding alone(n = 8),gastrointestinal bleeding and ascites(n = 3).RESULTS:Of these 23 attempted TIPS procedure patients,21 patients had technically successful TIPS procedures.A total of 29 out of 32 TIPS procedures including revisions were successful in 21 patients with a mean age of 72.1 years(range 65-82 years).Three of the procedures were unsuccessful attempts at TIPS and 8 procedures were successful revisions of our existing TIPS.Sixteen of 21 patients who underwent successful TIPS(excluding 5 patients lost to follow-up) were followed for a mean of 14.7 mo.Ascites and/or hydrothorax was controlled following technically successful procedures in 12 of 13 patients.Bleeding was controlled following technically successful procedures in 10 out of 11 patients.CONCLUSION:We have demonstrated that TIPS is an effective procedure to control refractory complications of portal hypertension in elderly patients. | Mubin I Syed Hetal Karsan Hector Ferral Azim Shaikh Uzma Waheed Talal Akhter Alan Gabbard Kamal Morar Robert Tyrrell | 2012 | World Journal of Hepatology2012,4,2: | 4 |
| 4 | Preparation of Chitin-PLA laminated composite for implantable application显示文摘The present study explores the possibilities of using locally available inexpensive waste prawn shell derived chitin reinforced and bioabsorbable polylactic acid(PLA)laminated composites to develop new materials with excellent mechanical and thermal properties for implantable application such as in bone or dental implant.Chitin at different concentration(1e20%of PLA)reinforced PLA films(CTP)were fabricated by solvent casting process and laminated chitin-PLA composites(LCTP)were prepared by laminating PLA film(obtained by hot press method)with CTP also by hot press method at 160C.The effect of variation of chitin concentration on the resulting laminated composite's behavior was investigated.The detailed physico-mechanical,surface morphology and thermal were assessed with different characterization technique such as FT-IR,XRD,SEM and TGA.The FTIR spectra showed the characteristic peaks for chitin and PLA in the composites.SEM images showed an excellent dispersion of chitin in the films and composites.Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)showed that the complete degradation of chitin,PLA film,5%chitin reinforced PLA film(CTP2)and LCTP are 98%,95%,87%and 98%respectively at temperature of 500C.The tensile strength of the LCTP was found 25.09 MPa which is significantly higher than pure PLA film(18.55 MPa)and CTP2 film(8.83 MPa).After lamination of pure PLA and CTP2 film,the composite(LCTP)yielded 0.265e1.061%water absorption from 30 min to 24 h immerse in water that is much lower than PLA and CTP.The increased mechanical properties of the laminated films with the increase of chitin content indicated good dispersion of chitin into PLA and strong interfacial actions between the polymer and chitin.The improvement of mechanical properties and the results of antimicrobial and cytotoxicity of the composites also evaluated and revealed the composite would be a suitable candidate for implant application in biomedical sector. | Romana Nasrin Shanta Biswas Taslim Ur Rashid Sanjida Afrin Rumana Akhter Jahan Papia Haque Mohammed Mizanur Rahman | 2017 | Bioactive Materials2017,2,4: | 4 |
| 5 | Investigation of fractured rock aquifer in South China using electrical resistivity tomography and self-potential methods显示文摘Assessment of fractured rock aquifers in many parts of the world is complicated given their strong heterogeneity. Delineation of the subsurface geological formation in the weathered terrain is essential for groundwater exploration. To achieve this goal, 2D electrical resistivity tomography(ERT) and self-potential(SP) in combination with joint profile method(JPM) and boreholes have been carried out to delineate the subsurface geological units, detect the fracture/fault zones in hard rock, monitor the groundwater flow, and estimate the groundwater reserves contained within the weathered terrain at a complex heterogeneous site of Huangbu, South Guangdong of China. The integration of resistivity images with the borehole lithology along three profiles delineates three subsurface distinct layers namely topsoil cover, weathered and unweathered layers. The incorporation of ERT and SP with JPM reveal five fractures/faults, i.e., F_1, F_2, F_3, F_4 and F_5. 2D ERT models interpret the less resistive anomalies as the fractures/faults zones, and high resistive anomalies as the fresh bedrock. The inversion program based on the smoothness-constraint is used on the resistivity field data to get more realistic three layered model. SP measurements are obtained along the same electrical profiles which provide the negative anomalies clearly indicating the groundwater preferential flow pathways along the fracture/fault zones. Hydraulic parameters namely hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity were determined to estimate the groundwater resources contained within the fractures/faults. The integrated results suggest that the fractures/faults zones are most appropriate places of drilling for groundwater exploration in the investigated area. Geophysical methods coupled with the upfront borehole data provides better understanding about the conceptual model of the subsurface geological formations. | 6 | Synthesis and Characterization of Fe_(50)Cr_(14)Mo_(14)C_(14)B_6Gd_2 Bulk Amorphous Steel显示文摘Bulk amorphous steel having 7 mm thickness was synthesized to evaluate its thermal stability and mechanical properties.The steel was synthesized by Cu mold casting technique using 1-2N pure metals.Characterization of the material was done by X-ray diffraction,differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy.The activation energies were calculated by Kissinger equation and it was found that the steel had better stability against crystallization.Mechanical properties like Vicker s hardness,nanohardness,elastic modulus and elastic recovery of as-cast and annealed samples were measured.It was concluded that the present steel had good glass-forming ability(GFA) and mechanical properties. | M. | 7 | Dynamic roles of angiopoietin-like proteins 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 in the survival and enhancement of ex vivo expansion of bone-marrow hematopoietic stem cells显示文摘Recent advances in hematopoietic stem cells(HSCs)expansion by growth factors including angiopoietin-like proteins(Angptls)have opened up the possibility to use HSCs in regenerative medicine.However,the unavailability of true in vitro HSCs expansion by these growth factors has limited the understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanism of HSCs expansion.Here,we report the functional role of mouse Angptls 1,2,3,4,6 and 7 and growth factors SCF,TPO,IGF-2 and FGF-1 on purified mouse bone-marrow(BM)Lineage-Sca-1+(Lin-Sca-1+)HSCs.The recombinant retroviral transduced-CHO-S cells that secrete Angptls in serum-free medium were used alone or in combination with growth factors(SCF,TPO,IGF-2 and FGF-1).None of the Angptls stimu-lated HSC proliferation,enhanced or inhibited HSCs colony formation,but they did support the survival of HSCs.By contrast,any of the six Angptls together with saturating levels of growth factors dramatically stimulated a 3-to 4.5-fold net expansion of HSCs compared to stimulation with a combination of those growth factors alone.These findings lead to an understanding of the basic function of Angptls on signaling pathways for the survival as well as expansion of HSCs in the bone marrow niche. | Shahina Akhter MdMashiar Rahman Hyun Seo Lee Hyeon-Jin Kim Seong-Tshool Hong | 2013 | Protein & Cell2013,4,3: | 2 |
| 8 | The importance of visualization of appendix on abdominal ultrasound for the diagnosis of appendicitis in children: A quality assessment review显示文摘BACKGROUND:Ultrasound has the first line investigation role in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in children.The purpose of this study was to perform a quality assessment review on the visualization rate of appendix on ultrasound in children in the community hospital setting.METHODS:A retrospective chart review of the abdominal ultrasound findings for the visualization of the appendix was performed on paediatric patients ranging from 5 to 18 years.Data were collected from the two community hospitals of Toronto by using hospital electronic medical record for the ultrasound findings in patients presented with abdominal pain.RESULTS:Data from two community hospitals indicated visualization rate of the appendix as 11.0%and 23.2%for site 1 and site 2 respectively.In cases where the ultrasound was repeated the visualization rate remains the same.A two-proportion z-test was performed to find whether the visualization of appendix increases the likelihood of diagnosing appendicitis.The results revealed that the visualization of an appendix(P=0.52),significantly improved the diagnosis of appendicitis(z=34,P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Visualization of an appendix on ultrasound increases the likelihood of correctly diagnosing appendicitis.In our study,we found low visualization rate of appendix on ultrasound that could be the result of many factors that contribute towards the low visualization rate of an appendix on ultrasound.Hence,the challenges in identifying appendix should be minimized to improve the visualization and diagnosis of appendicitis on ultrasound. | Muhammad Akhter Hamid Ruqiya Afroz Uqba Nawaz Ahmed Aneela Bawani Dilnasheen Khan Rabia Shahab Asim Salim | 2020 | World Journal of Emergency Medicine2020,11,3: | 2 |
| 9 | Hepatocytes isolated from neoplastic liver-immunomagnetic purging as a new source for transplantation显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether hepatocytes isolated from macroscopically normal liver during hepatic resection for neoplasia could provide a novel source of healthy hepatocytes, including the development of reliable protocols for malignant cells removal from the hepatocyte preparation. METHODS: Hepatocytes were procured from resected liver of 18 patients with liver tumors using optimised digestion and cell-enrichment protocols. Suspensions of various known quantities of the HT-29 tumor cell line and patient hepatocytes were treated or not with Ep-CAM-antibody-coated immunomagnetic beads in order to investigate the effi cacy of tumor-purging by immunomagnetic depletion, using a semi-quantitative RT-PCR method developed to detect tumor cells. Immunomagnetic bead-treated or bead-untreated tumor cell-hepatocyte suspensions were transplanted intra-peritoneally in Balb/C nude mice to assess the rates of tumor development. RESULTS: Mean viable hepatocyte yield was 9.3 x 106 cells per gram of digested liver with mean viability of 70.5%. Immunomagnetic depletion removed tumor cells to below the RT-PCR detection-threshold of 1 tumor cell in 106 hepatocytes, representing a maximum tumor purging efficacy of greater than 400 000-fold. Transplanted, immunomagnetic bead-purged tumor cell-hepatocyte suspensions did not form peritonealtumors in Balb/C nude mice. Co-transplantation of hepatocytes with tumor cells did not increase tumorigenesis of the tumor cells. CONCLUSION: Immunomagnetic depletion appears to be an effective method of purging contaminating tumor cells to below threshold for likely tumorigenesis.
