Effects of two types of exercise training on psychological well-being,sleep,quality of life and physical fitness in patients with high-grade glioma(WHO III and IV):study protocol for a randomized controlled trial显示文摘Background:There is existing evidence on whether and to what degree regular exercise training improves the quality of life(QoL)among cancer survivors. However,in regards to patients with high-grade glioma(HGG;WHO grade III and IV),no conclusive study has been performed so far.The present trial aims to fill this gap by examining whether psychological well-being,sleep,QoL and physical fitness might be improved with two different types of exercise,as compared to an active control condition.Active control condition represent individuals participating at regular meetings to talk about their current life situation, though, the meetings were not intended as that of the psychotherapy group.Regular meetings are of the same frequency, duration, and intensity as the exercise interventions. Methods:A total of 45 patients with HGG after undergoing neurosurgery and adjuvant radiotherapy, chemotherapy,or chemoradiotherapy will be consecutively and randomly assigned to(a)an endurance training,(b)a resistance training or(c)to an active control condition. The intervention will last for 6 consecutive weeks, consisting of 2 weekly sessions(30-45 min per session).Measurements would take place at three time points, namely at the beginning of the study(baseline),3 weeks after the beginning of the study, and 6 weeks after the beginning of the study. The last measurement also represents the end of the study.Aerobic exercise performance will be assessed objectively with a 6-min walking test, and a handgrip test will be used to assess the upper body strength.Further, participants will complete a battery of questionnaires covering sociodemographic information,QoL,sleep quality and sleep patterns, coping with stress,state-and trait-anxiety,depression,and fatigue. In parallel, experts will use the Hamilton Depres-sion Rating Scale to determine and rate participants’symptoms of depression.Significance:The present study will be the first to investigate and compare the impact of two different exercise modalities, namely endurance and resistance training,on physical fitness and dimensions of well-being,and sleep among patients with HGG who underwent neurosurgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, chemotherapy,or chemoradiotherapy.Importantly, unlike the majority of previous studies, the control condition consists of an active set-up to detect possible factual beneficial effects of exercise training, irrespective of social interactions. | Dominik Cordier Markus Gerber Serge Brand | 2019 | Cancer Communications2019,39,1: | 2

Adolescents' personal beliefs about sufficient physical activity are more closely related to sleep and psychological functioning than self-reported physical activity: A prospective study显示文摘Background: Preliminary evidence among adults suggests that the ways in which individuals think about their physical activity(PA) behavior is more closely associated with their well-being than self-reported PA. This study therefore aimed to examine whether and how self-reported PA and personal beliefs about suffbcient PA are associated with sleep and psychological functioning in a sample of Swiss adolescents, using both cross-sectional and prospective data. Methods: An overall sample of 864 vocational students(368 girls, 17.98± 1.36 years, mean ± SD) was followed prospectively over a 10-month period. At each measurement occasion, participants filled in a series of self-report questiocnaires to assess their PA levels, their personal beliefs about whether or not they engage in sufficient PA, sleep(insomnia symptoms, sleep quality, sleep-onset latency, and number of awakenings),and psychological functioning(depressive symptoms, quality of life, perceived stress, and mental toughness). Results: Adolescents who believe that they are sufficiently physically active to maintain good health reported more restoring sleep. No differen?ces in sleep were found between adolescents who meet PA recommendationsvs. those who do not. Additionally, adolescents who believe that they were sufficiently physically active also reported better psychological functioning. This close relationship between adolescents5 beliefs about their PA involvement and their sleep and psychological functioning was corroborated in the prospective analyses. Conclusion: Cognitive factors should be studied more intensively when elucidating the relationship among PA, sleep, and psychological functioning in young people, particularly when aiming to develop new exercise interventions targeting psychological outcomes. | Christin Lang Serge Brand Flora Colledge Sebastian Ludyga Uwe Pühse Markus Gerber | 2019 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2019,8,3: | 1

The Relationship between Dimensions of Emerging Adulthood and Behavioral Problems among Chinese Emerging Adults: The Mediating Role of Physical Activity and Self- Control显示文摘Emerging adulthood(EA)is a critical stage of life to develop and sustain a healthy lifestyle, which is also a time of vulnerability to poor physical and mental health outcomes. In this study,we conducted a path analysis(N=1326)to examine associations among four dimensions of EA,levels of regular physical activity(PA),self-control,MPA tendency and irrational procrastination. Results found:1)higher levels of PA predicted both MPA tendency(β=−0.08,95%CI:−0.11 to−0.06,p<0.001)and irrational procrastination(β=−0.01,95%CI:−0.17 to−0.008,p<0.01)indirectly via self-control;2)Instability(β=0.13,95%CI:0.08 to 0.18,p<0.01)and Responsibility(β=−0.06,95%CI:−0.10 to−0.08,p=0.03)exerted direct effects on irrational procrastination and Instability also indirectly predicted irrational procrastination via MPA tendency(β=0.03,95%CI:0.02 to 0.05,p<0.01).These findings proved that perceived features of EA are linked to behavioral problems and supported that regular PA plays a crucial role to protect mental health. | Jin Kuang Jeffrey Jensen Arnett Erle Chen Zsolt Demetrovics Fabian Herold Rebecca Y.M.Cheung Daniel L.Hall Michaela Markwart Markus Gerber Sebastian Ludyga Arthur F.Kramer Liye Zou | 2023 | International Journal of Mental Health Promotion2023,25,8: | 0
Validation of the Chinese Version of the Affective Exercise Experiences Questionnaire (AFFEXX-C)显示文摘Despite the well-established benefits of regular physical activity(PA)on health,a large proportion of the world population does not achieve the recommended level of regular PA.Although affective experiences toward PA may play a key role to foster a sustained engagement in PA,they have been largely overlooked and crudely measured in the existing studies. To address this shortcoming, the Affective Exercise Experiences(AFFEXX)questionnaire has been developed to measure such experiences.Specifically, this questionnaire was developped to assess the following three domains:antecedent appraisals(e.g.,liking vs.disliking exercise in groups),core affective exercise experiences(i.e.,pleasure vs.displeasure, energy vs.tiredness, and calmness vs.tension),and exercise motivation(i.e.,attraction vs.antipathy toward exercise). The current study aimed to validate a Chinese version of the AFFEXX questionnaire(AFFEXX-C).In study 1,722 Chinese college students provided data for analyses of factorial, convergent, discriminant, criterion validity, and test-retest reliability of the AFFEXX-C.In addition,1,300 college students were recruited in study 2 to further validate its structural model. Results showed that the AFFEXX-C demonstrates a goodfit and reliability.Additionally, results further supported the hypothesized model based on previous research:antecedent appraisals predicted core affective exercise experiences, which in turn predicted attraction-antipathy toward physical exercise. The AFFEXX-C was found to be a reliable and valid measure of affective exercise experiences in a population of Chinese college students. | Ting Wang Boris Cheval Silvio Maltagliati Zachary Zenko Fabian Herold Sebastian Ludyga Markus Gerber Yan Luo Layan Fessler Notger GMüller Liye Zou | 2023 | International Journal of Mental Health Promotion2023,25,7: | 0
Costs resulting from nonprofessional soccer injuries in Switzerland:A detailed analysis显示文摘Background:Soccer injuries constitute an important public health problem and cause a high economic burden.Nevertheless, comprehensive data regarding injury costs in nonprofessional soccer are missing. The aim of this study was to determine which groups of nonprofessional soccer athletes, injury types, and injury situations caused high injury costs. Methods:A cross-sectional,retrospective telephone survey was carried out with a random sample of persons who had sustained a soccer injury between July 2013 and June 2014 and who had reported this accident to the Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund(Suva). One year after the corresponding accident, every injury was linked to its costs and to the answers obtained in the interview about injury setting, injury characteristics, and injury causes. Finally, the costs of 702 injuries were analyzed. Results:The average cost of an injury in nonprofessional soccer amounted to€4030(bias-corrected and accelerated 95%confidence interval(BCa 95%CI):3427-4719).Persons aged 30 years and older experienced 35%of soccer injuries but accounted for 49%of all costs.A total of58%of all costs were the result of injuries that occurred during amateur games. In particular, game injuries sustained by players in separate leagues for players aged 30+/40+years led to high average costs of€8190(BCa 95%CI:5036-11,645).Knee injuries accounted for 25%of all injuries and were responsible for 53%of all costs.Although contact and foul play did not lead to above-average costs, twisting or turning situations were highly cost relevant, leading to an average sum of€7710(BCa 95%CI:5376-10,466)per injury. Conclusion:Nonprofessional soccer players aged 30 years and older and particularly players in 30+/40+leagues had above-average injury costs.Furthermore, the prevention of knee injuries, noncontact and nonfoul play injuries, and injuries caused by twisting and turning should be of highest priority in decreasing health care costs. | Angela Gebert Markus Gerber Uwe Pühse Philippe Gassmann Hanspeter Stamm Markus Lamprecht | 2020 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2020,9,3: | 0
A Bifactor Analysis Approach to Construct Validity and Reliability of the Affective Exercise Experience Questionnaire among Chinese College Students显示文摘Affective exercise experience as an emerging theoretical concept has great potential to provide a more nuanced understanding of individual factors that influence exercise behavior. However, concerning the Affective Exercise Experiences(AFFEXX)questionnaire,it has not been examined yet whether the structural score of the AFFEXX is a useful index to predict physical activity(refers to any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure).Furthermore, there is currently a gap in knowledge regarding the psychological mechanisms that can explain the relationship between affective exercise experiences and the level of physical activity(PA).In order to adress these gaps in the literature,we conducted two studies among Chinese collge students that aimed(i)to investigated whether the total score of the three AFFEXX-C constructs(antecedent appraisals, core affective exercise experiences, and attraction-antipathy towards exercise)is a relaible indicator that can be utilized in research and pratical settings and(ii)to evalute the specific psychological mechanisms that can explain the relationship between affective exercise experience and PA.In Study 1,we recruited 801 voluntary Chinese college students for bifactor and correlational analyses. In Study 2,875 Chinese college students were enrolled to verify our findings from Study 1 and to explore the aforementioned mechanism. Results from the bifactor analyses supported our hypothesis that the total scores of the three AFFEXX-C constructs can be used among Chinese college students to establish a link with PA.Additionally, our results suggested that core affective exercise experiences and attraction-antipathy mediated the relationship between antecedent appraisals and the level of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA.Therefore, measuring affective exercise experiences using the AFFEXX-C,specifically the total scores of each individual construct may be a useful approach to predict future PA levels. | Ting Wang Markus Gerber Fabian Herold Joseph Bardeen Sebastian Ludyga Alyx Taylor Arthur FKramer Liye Zou | 2023 | International Journal of Mental Health Promotion2023,25,9: | 0
Neurophysiological correlates of interference control and response inhibition processes in children and adolescents engaging in open-and closed-skill sports显示文摘Background:Accumulating evidence suggests that sports participation promotes the development of inhibitory control, but the influences of the sports category and inhibition type still remain unclear. The categorization of sports based on the open-skill(externally paced)and closed-skill(self-paced)continuum allows for the integration of the environment as a factor contributing to sports-related benefits for inhibitory control.Methods:Cross-sectional data from different studies were combined(n=184)to examine the association between open-and closed-skill sports and cognitive control processes related to interference control and response inhibition.Participants(aged 9-14 years)filled in 7-day physical activity recall protocols and completed a Stroop Color-Word or a Go/NoGo task. The N200,N450,and P300 components of event-related potentials elicited by these tasks were recorded using electroencephalography. Results:Partial correlations supported the belief that time spent in open-skill sports was related to higher performance on inhibition trials.Additionally, path analyses revealed an association between this sports type and a greater negativity in the N200 and N450 amplitudes in both the full sample and group-level analyses. In contrast,no relation was found between sports type and P300 amplitude. Conclusion:The findings suggest that only the engagement in open-skill sports is associated with more effective conflict monitoring and higher performance on tasks demanding inhibitory control. | Sebastian Ludyga Manuel Mücke Christian Andra Markus Gerber Uwe Pühse | 2022 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2022,11,2: | 0
