1Optical vortices 30 years on:OAM manipulation from topological charge to multiple singularities显示文摘Thirty years ago,Coullet et al.proposed that a special optical field exists in laser cavities bearing some analogy with the superfluid vortex.Since then,optical vortices have been widely studied,inspired by the hydrodynamics sharing similar mathematics.Akin to a fluid vortex with a central flow singularity,an optical vortex beam has a phase singularity with a certain topological charge,giving rise to a hollow intensity distribution.Such a beam with helical phase fronts and orbital angular momentum reveals a subtle connection between macroscopic physical optics and microscopic quantum optics.These amazing properties provide a new understanding of a wide range of optical and physical phenomena,including twisting photons,spin–orbital interactions,Bose-Einstein condensates,etc.,while the associated technologies for manipulating optical vortices have become increasingly tunable and flexible.Hitherto,owing to these salient properties and optical manipulation technologies,tunable vortex beams have engendered tremendous advanced applications such as optical tweezers,high-order quantum entanglement,and nonlinear optics.This article reviews the recent progress in tunable vortex technologies along with their advanced applications.Yijie Shen Xuejiao Wang Zhenwei Xie Changjun Min Xing Fu Qiang Liu Mali Gong Xiaocong Yuan 2019Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1:77

5Pancreatitis in pregnancy: etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes显示文摘BACKGROUND:Acute pancreatitis in pregnancy is a rare and dangerous disease.This study aimed to examine the etiology,treatment,and outcomes of pancreatitis in pregnancy.METHOD:A total of 25 pregnant patients diagnosed with pancreatitis during the period of 1994 and 2014 was analyzed retrospectively.RESULTS:The pregnant patients were diagnosed with pancreatitis during a period of 21 years.Most(60%)of the patients were diagnosed with pancreatitis in the third trimester.The mean age of the patients at presentation was 25.7 years,with a mean gestational age of 24.4 weeks.Abdominal pain occurred in most patients and vomiting in one patient was associated hyperemesis gravidarum.The common cause of the disease was gallstone-related(56%),followed by alcohol-related(16%),post-ERCP(4%),hereditary(4%)and undetermined conditions(20%).The level of triglycerides was minimally high in three patients.ERCP and wire-guided sphincterotomy were performed in 6(43%)of 14 patients with gallstone-related pancreatitis and elevated liver enzymes with no complications.Most(84%)of the patients underwent a full-term,vaginal delivery.There was no difference in either maternal or fetal outcomes after ERCP.CONCLUSIONS:Acute pancreatitis is rare in pregnancy,occurring most commonly in the third trimester,and gallstones are the most common cause.When laparoscopic cholecystectomy is not feasible and a common bile duct stone is highly suspected on imaging,endoscopic sphincterotomy or stenting may help to prevent recurrence and postpone cholecystectomy until after delivery.Padmavathi Mali 2016Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2016,15,4:23
6Using benthic macrofauna to assess environmental quality of four intertidal mudflats in Hong Kong and Shenzhen Coast显示文摘Intertidal zone is a significant wetland between land and ocean. It plays an important role in maintaining local ecological balance. Both Mai Po and Futian intertidal mudflats are located in Shenzhen Bay and are important 'refueling' point along the East Asian/Australian flyway of migratory birds. The environmental quality of Mai Po and Futian mudflats have aroused great concern due to rapid economic developments in Hong Kong and Shenzhen in recent decades. Macroinfauna of Mai Po and Futian mudflats was investigated in December 2000 and the faunal data were used to assess their environmental quality. Two other mudflats, namely Ma Wan Typhoon Shelter (a more disturbed area) and Luk Keng intertidal mudflat (a place with relatively less human disturbance), were also sampled for macroinfauna and used as reference mudflats. Shannon - Weaver species diversity index (Isd), biotic coefficient (Cb) and macrofaunal pollution index (Imp) of the macrofauna community on four intertidal mudflats were used to determine their environmental quality. The results showed that Luk Keng intertidal mudflat was unpolluted, Mai Po and Futian mudflats were slightly polluted, and Ma Wan was moderately polluted. 7Versatile on-chip light coupling and(de)multiplexing from arbitrary polarizations to controlled waveguide modes using an integrated dielectric metasurface显示文摘Metasurfaces have found broad applicability in free-space optics,while its potential to tailor guided waves remains barely explored.By synergizing the Jones matrix model with generalized Snell’s law under the phase-matching condition,we propose a universal design strategy for versatile on-chip mode-selective coupling with polarization sensitivity,multiple working wavelengths,and high efficiency concurrently.The coupling direction,operation frequency,and excited mode type can be designed at will for arbitrary incident polarizations,outperforming previous technology that only works for specific polarizations and lacks versatile mode controllability.Here,using silicon-nanoantenna-patterned silicon-nitride photonic waveguides,we numerically demonstrate a set of chip-scale optical couplers around 1.55μm,including mode-selective directional couplers with high coupling efficiency over 57%and directivity about 23 d B.Polarization and wavelength demultiplexer scenarios are also proposed with 67%maximum efficiency and an extinction ratio of 20 d B.Moreover,a chip-integrated twisted light generator,coupling free-space linear polarization into an optical vortex carrying 1 h orbital angular momentum(OAM),is also reported to validate the mode-control flexibility.This comprehensive method may motivate compact wavelength/polarization(de)multiplexers,multifunctional mode converters,on-chip OAM generators for photonic integrated circuits,and high-speed optical telecommunications.YUAN MENG ZHOUTIAN LIU ZHENWEI XIE RIDE WANG TIANCHENG QI FUTAI HU HYUNSEOK KIM QIRONG XIAO XING FU QIANG WU SANG-HOON BAE MALI GONG XIAOCONG YUAN 2020Photonics Research2020,8,4:8
8Bioconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in roots of three mangrove species in Jiulong River Estuary显示文摘The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) concentrations were determined in the root of three mangrove species(Kandelia candel, Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza) and their growing environment(sediment) in mangrove wetlands of Jiulong River Estuary, Fujian, China. The total PAHs(16 parent PAHs) in mangrove sediments ranged from 193.44 to 270.53 ng/g dw, with a mean value of 231.76±31.78 ng/g dw. Compared with other mangrove and coastal marine sediments, the PAHs concentrations of all the sampling areas in this study were at relatively lower level. The total PAHs(13 parent PAHs) values varied from 30.83 to 62.73 ng/g dw in mangrove roots. Benzo[a]pyrene(five-ring), fluoranthene(four-ring) and pyrene(four-ring) dominated in mangrove sediments. Based on ratios of phenathrene/anthracene, fluoranthene/pyrene and fluoranthene/pyrene + fluoranthene, the main possible sources of surface sediment PAHs were identified as grass, wood or coal combustion for mangrove wetlands of Jiulong River Estuary. Naphthalene(two-ring) and phenathrene(three-ring) were the most abundant compounds in mangrove roots. Sediment-to-vegetation bioconcentration factors(BCF SV s) were calculated and their relationships with PAHs’ physico-chemical properties were investigated. The average BCF SV s of PAHs for three mangrove species roots were almost all under the level of 1 except for naphthalene. Good linear relationship between BCF SV values for mangrove roots and PAHs water solubility, octanol-water partitioning coefficients was derived in present study. 10Syntheses and characterization of anti-thrombotic and anti-oxidative Gastrodin-modified polyurethane for vascular tissue engineering显示文摘Vascular grafts must avoid negative inflammatory responses and thrombogenesis to prohibit fibrotic deposition immediately upon implantation and promote the regeneration of small diameter blood vessels(<6 mm inner diameter).Here,polyurethane(PU)elastomers incorporating anti-coagulative and anti-inflammatory Gastrodin were fabricated.The films had inter-connected pores with porosities equal to or greater than 86%and pore sizes ranging from 250 to 400μm.Incorporation of Gastrodin into PU films resulted in desirable mechanical properties,hydrophilicity,swelling ratios and degradation rates without collapse.The released Gastrodin maintained bioactivity over 21 days as assessed by its anti-oxidative capability.The Gastrodin/PU had better anti-coagulation response(less observable BSA,fibrinogen and platelet adhesion/activation and suppressed clotting in whole blood).Red blood cell compatibility,measured by hemolysis,was greatly improved with 2Gastrodin/PU compared to other Gastrodin/PU groups.Notably,Gastrodin/PU upregulated anti-oxidant factors Nrf2 and HO-1 expression in H2O2 treated HUVECs,correlated with decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-αand IL-1β in RAW 264.7 cells.Upon implantation in a subcutaneous pocket,PU was encapsulated by an obvious fibrous capsule,concurrent with a large amount of inflammatory cell infiltration,while Gastrodin/PU induced a thinner fibrous capsule,especially 2Gastrodin/PU.Further,enhanced adhesion and proliferation of HUVECs seeded onto films in vitro demonstrated that 2Gastrodin/PU could help cell recruitment,as evidenced by rapid host cell infiltration and substantial blood vessel formation in vivo.These results indicate that 2Gastrodin/PU has the potential to facilitate blood vessel regeneration,thus providing new insight into the development of clinically effective vascular grafts.Meng Zheng Jiazhi Guo Qing Li Jian Yang Yi Han Hongcai Yang Mali Yu Lianmei Zhong Di Lu Limei Li Lin Sun 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,2:7
11Synergistic anti-inflammatory and osteogenic n-HA/resveratrol/chitosan composite microspheres for osteoporotic bone regeneration显示文摘The development of functional materials for osteoporosis is ultimately required for bone remodeling.However,grafts were accompanied by increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines that impaired bone formation.In this work,nano-hydroxyapatite(n-HA)/resveratrol(Res)/chitosan(CS)composite microspheres were designed to create a beneficial microenvironment and help improve the osteogenesis by local sustained release of Res.Study of in vitro release confirmed the feasibility of n-HA/Res/CS microspheres for controlled Res release.Notably,microspheres had anti-inflammatory activity evidenced by the decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α,IL-1βand iNOS in RAW264.7 cells in a dose dependent manner.Further,enhanced adhesion and proliferation of BMSCs seeded onto microspheres demonstrated that composite microspheres were conducive to cell growth.The ability to enhance osteo-differentiation was supported by up-regulation of Runx2,ALP,Col-1 and OCN,and substantial mineralization in osteogenic medium.When implanted into bone defects in the osteoporotic rat femoral condyles,enhanced entochondrostosis and bone regeneration suggested that the n-HA/Res/CS composite microspheres were more favorable for impaired fracture healing.The results indicated that optimized n-HA/Res/CS composite microspheres could serve as promising multifunctional fillers for osteoporotic bone defect/fracture treatment.Limei Li Mali Yu Yao Li Qing Li Hongcai Yang Meng Zheng Yi Han Di Lu Sheng Lu Li Gui 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,5:6
12Single-beam two-photon three-dimensional optical storage in a pyrryl-substituted fulgide photochromic material显示文摘We introduce a high-density three-dimensional optical data storage approach by using a pyrryl-sub-stituted fulgide photochromic material with a method of single-beam two-photon recording and fluorescence confocal readout. The detailed information about the photochromic material and the experimental setup are presented. The experiments about multi-layered recording and readout are carried out with a 100-μm-thick transparent photochromic material film. The results show that the lateral resolution is better than 1 μm, and the longitudinal resolution is about 3 μm. 17Broadband terahertz wave generation from an epsilon-near-zero material显示文摘Broadband light sources emitting in the terahertz spectral range are highly desired for applications such as noninvasive imaging and spectroscopy.Conventionally,THz pulses are generated by optical rectification in bulk nonlinear crystals with millimetre thickness,with the bandwidth limited by the phase-matching condition.Here we demonstrate broadband THz emission via surface optical rectification from a simple,commercially available 19nmthick indium tin oxide(ITO)thin film.We show an enhancement of the generated THz signal when the pump laser is tuned around the epsilon-near-zero(ENZ)region of ITO due to the pump laser field enhancement associated with the ENZ effect.The bandwidth of the THz signal generated from the ITO film can be over 3 THz,unrestricted by the phasematching condition.This work offers a new possibility for broadband THz generation in a subwavelength thin film made of an ENZ material,with emerging physics not found in existing nonlinear crystals.Wenhe Jia Meng Liu Yongchang Lu Xi Feng Qingwei Wang Xueqian Zhang Yibo Ni Futai Hu Mali Gong Xinlong Xu Yuanyuan Huang Weili Zhang Yuanmu Yang Jiaguang Han 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,1:4
18Creation and control of high-dimensional multi-partite classically entangled light显示文摘Vector beams,non-separable in spatial mode and polarisation,have emerged as enabling tools in many diverse applications,from communication to imaging.This applicability has been achieved by sophisticated laser designs controlling the spin and orbital angular momentum,but so far is restricted to only two-dimensional states.Here we demonstrate the first vectorially structured light created and fully controlled in eight dimensions,a new state-of-the-art.We externally modulate our beam to control,for the frst time,the complete set of classical Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ)states in paraxial structured light beams,in analogy with high-dimensional multi-partite quantum entangled states,and introduce a new tomography method to verify their fidelity.Our complete theoretical framework reveals a rich parameter space for further extending the dimensionality and degrees of freedom,opening new pathways for vetorilly structured light in the classical and quantum regimes.Yjie Shen Iaac Nape Xilin Yang Xing Fu Mali Gong Darryl Naidoo Andrew Forbes 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,5:4
19Dual-wavelength bidirectional pumped high-power Raman fiber laser显示文摘In this paper, we reported both the experimental demonstration and theoretical analysis of a Raman fiber laser based on a master oscillator–power amplifier configuration. The Raman fiber laser adopted the dual-wavelength bidirectional pumping configuration, utilizing 976 nm laser diodes and 1018 nm fiber lasers as the pump sources. A 60-m-long25/400 μm ytterbium-doped fiber was used to convert the power from 1070 to 1124 nm, realizing a maximum power output of 3.7 kW with a 3 dB spectral width of 6.8 nm. Moreover, we developed a multi-frequency model taking into consideration the Raman gain spectrum and amplified spontaneous emission. The calculated spectral broadening of both the forward and backward laser was in good agreement with the experimental results. 20Event-Triggered Sampled-Data Consensus of Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems with Control Input Losses显示文摘This paper investigates the leader-following consensus problem for multi-agent systems with event-triggered mechanism and control packet losses.Based on the local synchronization error, event-triggered mechanisms are proposed in order to reduce the number of controller update.The control packet may lose due to unreliability of communication channel.With the assumption that once the packet loss happens the controller will be set to zero,sufficient consensus criteria for multi-agent system with event-triggered mechanism and control packet losses is obtained.It is also shown that the interplay among the allowable packet loss rate,event-triggered mechanism and sampling period.An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.XING Mali DENG Feiqi 2018Journal of Systems Science & Complexity2018,31,6:3
