| 1 | Autophagy in colorectal cancer:An important switch from physiology to pathology显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer death in both men and women worldwide.Among the factors and mechanisms that are involved in the multifactorial etiology of CRC,autophagy is an important transformational switch that occurs when a cell shifts from normal to malignant.In recent years,multiple hypotheses have been considered regarding the autophagy mechanisms that are involved in cancer.The currently accepted hypothesis is that autophagy has dual and contradictory roles in carcinogenesis,but the precise mechanisms leading to autophagy in cancer are not yet fully defined and seem to be context dependent.Autophagy is a surveillance mechanism used by normal cells that protects them from the transformation to malignancy by removing damaged organelles and aggregated proteins and by reducing reactive oxygen species,mitochondrial abnormalities and DNA damage.However,autophagy also supports tumor formation by promoting access to nutrients that are critical to the metabolism and growth of tumor cells and by inhibiting cellular death and increasing drug resistance.Autophagy studies in CRC have focused on several molecules,mainly microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3,beclin 1,and autophagy related 5,with conflicting results.Beneficial effects were observed for some agents that modulate autophagy in CRC either alone or,more often,in combination with other agents.More extensive studies are needed in the future to clarify the roles of autophagy-related genes and modulators in colorectal carcinogenesis,and to develop potential beneficial agents for the prognosis and treatment of CRC. | Florin Burada Elena Raluca Nicoli Marius Eugen Ciurea Daniel Constantin Uscatu Mihai Ioana Dan Ionut Gheonea | 2015 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2015,7,11: | 15 |
| 2 | Implementing a DIKW model on a deep mine cooling system显示文摘The South African mining industry has been experiencing increasing economic pressure. Deep mines also suffer from very hot workplaces, which leads to safety risks. These factors place stress on managers to reach their production targets while providing safe workplace conditions. The data information knowledge wisdom(DIKW) model, also known as the wisdom hierarchy, was implemented on a deep mine cooling system. This study aims to show that a simple model such as the DIKW model can assist managers in improving their deep mine cooling system's performance. The study found that the DIKW approach is a suitable approach for use on mine cooling systems to facilitate operational improvements.Applying the DIKW approach to a case study on a mine cooling system created substantial awareness and facilitated a cooling duty improvement of 55% which relates to an increase of 5.3 MW of refrigeration. In order to obtain the optimum stream-wise vortices, a swept ramp injector is chosen as the second-stage wall injection combined with the first-stage central strut injection. The performance of the two-staged injection is compared with that of a one-staged injection, while the strut is kept installed in both cases. The two-staged injections can make full use of the residual oxygen near the wall and release more heat. The second-stage injection further downstream avoids the strong shock waves in the isolator and results in a rising wall pressure and good burning effects after the wall injection. Therefore, it allows more fuel to be injected into the supersonic combustor without causing thermal choking. | 12 | Efficiency of HAART in the prevention of mother to children HIV-1 transmission at Saint Camille medical centre in Burkina Faso,West Africa显示文摘Objective:To evaluate efficiency of HAART in the prevention of mother to child HIV transmission.Methods:A longitudinal study was conducted on 1 300 women attending the antenatal service at Saint Camille Medical Centre from September 2010 to July 2011.The HIV status of mothers was determined by rapid tests and EUSA.Discordant results were confirmed by real-time PCR.PCR was used to determine HIV status of children born from HIV-positive mothers.Results:Among 1 300 pregnant women tested for HIV,378 were seropositive.Mothers were predominantly housewives(69.7%),and their mean age was(28.32±0.15) years.The overall prevalence of HIV transmission from mother to child was 4.8%(18/378).This prevalence differed significantly from 0.0%(0/114) to 6.8%(18/264) in children born from mothers under HAART and those with mothers under New Prophylactic Protocol(ACT + 3TC + NVP),respectively(P< 0.01).Children’s mortality rate during the medical follow up was 1.3%(5/378).Among 16 women with HIV dubious status by ELISA,the Real Time PCR confirmed 2/16(12.5%) as HIV positive. | 17 | Mapping forest age using National Forest Inventory,airborne laser scanning,and Sentinel-2 data显示文摘Background:The age of forest stands is critical information for forest management and conservation,for example for growth modelling,timing of management activities and harvesting,or decisions about protection areas.However,area-wide information about forest stand age often does not exist.In this study,we developed regression models for large-scale area-wide prediction of age in Norwegian forests.For model development we used more than 4800 plots of the Norwegian National Forest Inventory(NFI)distributed over Norway between latitudes 58°and 65°N in an 18.2 Mha study area.Predictor variables were based on airborne laser scanning(ALS),Sentinel-2,and existing public map data.We performed model validation on an independent data set consisting of 63 spruce stands with known age.Results:The best modelling strategy was to fit independent linear regression models to each observed site index(SI)level and using a SI prediction map in the application of the models.The most important predictor variable was an upper percentile of the ALS heights,and root mean squared errors(RMSEs)ranged between 3 and 31 years(6%to 26%)for SI-specific models,and 21 years(25%)on average.Mean deviance(MD)ranged between^(−1) and 3 years.The models improved with increasing SI and the RMSEs were largest for low SI stands older than 100 years.Using a mapped SI,which is required for practical applications,RMSE and MD on plot level ranged from 19 to 56 years(29%to 53%),and 5 to 37 years(5%to 31%),respectively.For the validation stands,the RMSE and MD were 12(22%)and 2 years(3%),respectively.Conclusions:Tree height estimated from airborne laser scanning and predicted site index were the most important variables in the models describing age.Overall,we obtained good results,especially for stands with high SI.The models could be considered for practical applications,although we see considerable potential for improvements if better SI maps were available. | Johannes Schumacher Marius Hauglin Rasmus Astrup Johannes Breidenbach | 2020 | Forest Ecosystems2020,7,4: | 3 |
