Antimony speciation in the environment:Recent advances in understanding the biogeochemical processes and ecological effects显示文摘Antimony(Sb) is a toxic metalloid, and its pollution has become a global environmental problem as a result of its extensive use and corresponding Sb-mining activities. The toxicity and mobility of Sb strongly depend on its chemical speciation. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the biogeochemical processes(including emission, distribution, speciation, redox, metabolism and toxicity) that trigger the mobilization and transformation of Sb from pollution sources to the surrounding environment. Natural phenomena such as weathering, biological activity and volcanic activity, together with anthropogenic inputs, are responsible for the emission of Sb into the environment. Sb emitted in the environment can adsorb and undergo redox reactions on organic or inorganic environmental media, thus changing its existing form and exerting toxic effects on the ecosystem. This review is based on a careful and systematic collection of the latest papers during 2010–2017 and our research results, and it illustrates the fate and ecological effects of Sb in the environment. | Mengchang He Ningning Wang Xiaojing Long Chengjun Zhang Congli Ma Qianyun Zhong Aihua Wang Ying Wang Aneesa Pervaiz Jun Shan | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,1: | 40
Transformation of surface water and groundwater and water balance in the agricultural irrigation area of the Manas River Basin,China显示文摘Calculation of the water balance is very important to relieve the pressure on water resources in arid agricultural irrigation areas. This research focused on irrigation water balance calculations in the Manas River Basin of the southern margin of the Junggar Basin of China, and aimed to analyze the groundwater level dynamic trend and response characteristics of the basin water cycle under water-saving irrigation measures. The surface water and groundwater coupling model of MIKE 11-Visual MODFLOW was used to simulate rainfall runoff in mountainous areas, and quantify the contribution of water balance components in the plain irrigation area.Convergence of the delayed watershed in the mountain area was obvious, and when the river runoff exceeded 200 m^(3)/s,the error in the runoff simulation was large. The water balance in the plain agricultural irrigation area was in a negative equilibrium state, and the difference between recharge and discharge was−2.65 billion m^(3).The evapotranspiration was 24.49 billion m^(3) under drip irrigation, accounting for only approximately 51%of the total discharge. The lateral discharge of the unsaturated and saturated aquifers was 15.38 billion m^(3),accounting for approximately 32%of the total discharge. The main reason for the groundwater decline in the irrigation area was closely related to the extraction of groundwater, because the amount of recharge and discharge in the natural state was approximately identical. The MIKE 11-Visual MODFLOW model produced accurate results, and the research method provided a new exploration technique to quantify the effect of water supply mode on the groundwater table. The model is suitable for the management of water resources in arid areas. | Yang Guang He Xinlin Li Xiaolong Long Aihua Xue Lianqing | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,4: | 10
Coupling analysis of social-economic water consumption and its effects on the arid environments in Xinjiang of China based on the water and ecological footprints显示文摘In arid areas, ecological degradation aroused by over-exploitation of fresh water, expansion of artificial oasis and shrinkage of natural oasis, has drawn attention of many scholars and officials. The water and ecological footprints can be used to quantitatively evaluate the water consumption of social-economic activities and their influence on the eco-environments.In addition, increase of the water footprint indicates the expansion of artificial oasis, and the influence on the natural oasis could be reflected by the variation of the ecological footprint. This study was conducted to answer a scientific question that what is the quantitative relationship between the expansion of the artificial oasis and the degradation of the natural oasis in the arid environments of Xinjiang,China. Thus, based on the social-economic data, water consumption data and meteorological data during 2001–2015,we calculated the water and ecological footprints to express the human-related pressure exerted on the water resources and arid environments in Xinjiang(including 14 prefectures and cities),and explore the relationship between the water and ecological footprints and its mechanism by using the coupling analysis and Granger causality test. The results show that both the water and ecological footprints of Xinjiang increased significantly during 2001–2015,and the increasing rate of the ecological footprint was much faster than that of the water footprint. The coupling degree between the water and ecological footprints was relatively high at the temporal scale and varied at the spatial scale.Among the 14 prefectures and cities examined in Xinjiang, the greater social-economic development(such as in Karamay and Urumqi)was associated with the lower coupling degree between the two footprints.Increases in the water footprint will cause the ecological footprint to increase, such that a 1-unit increase in the consumption of water resources would lead to 2–3 units of ecological degradation. The quantitative relationship between the increases of the water and ecological footprints, together with the intensities of water consumption both in the natural and artificial oases of Tarim River Basin, have approved the fact that the formation and expansion of 1 unit of the artificial oasis would bring about the degradation of 2 units of the natural oasis. These conclusions not only provide a technical basis for sustainable development in Xinjiang, but also offer a theoretical guide and scientific information that could be used in similar arid areas around the world. | ZHANG Pei DENG Mingjiang LONG Aihua DENG Xiaoya WANG Hao HAI Yang WANG Jie LIU Yundong | 2020 | Journal of Arid Land2020,12,1: | 8
Land use change characteristics affected by water saving practices in Manas River Basin,China using Landsat satellite images显示文摘The characteristics and influencing factors of land use change under arid conditions were studied in the Manas River Basin in Xinjiang Region,Northwest China.Landsat satellite images acquired in 1976,1990,2000,2010 and 2015 over the study area were used as basic data.Land use change, the rate of change of land use, land use transfer and other aspects revealed the characteristics of land use change and related factors as influenced by water conditions in the basin. The results showed that:(1)Over nearly 50 years, land reclamation in the Manas River Basin resulted in the rapid expansion of an artificial oasis area, and promoted the process of‘oasis urbanization’,and accelerated the development of the river basin economy.(2)In 2000,the popularization of drip irrigation under mulch technology led to the rapid growth of cultivated land and development land in the watershed.Meanwhile, the water table declined in the desert area of the lower reaches of the river basin, and the area occupied by sparse shrub forest and grassland decreased.(3)Before popularization of water-saving technology, woodland, grassland and development land transformed to cultivated land in the amounts of 93.46 km^(2),2542.93 km^(2) and 137.53 km^(2),respectively,and woodland transformed in the amount of 189.64 km^(2).After water-saving technology was popularized, woodland, grassland and development land were transformed into cultivated land in the amounts of 567.41 km^(2),1756.2 km^(2) and 37.36 km^(2),respectively.(4)The popularization of water-saving technology made the dynamic degree of cultivated land and development land more active, and further increased landscape fragmentation and landscape heterogeneity. The level of urbanization development, the level of economic development and the dry humidity of the basin became the main factors affecting the change of land use in the basin. | Yang Guang Chen Dong He Xinlin Long Aihua Yang Mingjie Li Xiaolong | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,6: | 5
Effect of transverse static magnetic field on radial microstructure of hypereutectic aluminum alloy during directional solidification显示文摘The effect of different scales thermoelectric magnetic convection(TEMC)on the radial solidification microstructure of hypereutectic Al alloy has been investigated under transverse static magnetic field during directional solidification, focusing on the formation of freckle. Our experimental and numerical simulation results indicate that the TEMC circulation at sample scale under transverse static magnetic field leads to the enrichment of solute Al on one side of the sample. The TEMC and the solute enrichment degree increase with the increase of magnetic field when the magnetic field increases to 0.5 T.The enrichment degree of solute elements under magnetic field is affected by temperature gradient and growth rate. The non-uniform distribution of solute Al in the radial direction of the sample results in the non-uniform distribution of primary dendrite arm spacing(PDAS).Moreover, the applied magnetic field can lead to freckle formation and its number increases with the increase of magnetic field. The change of freckle is consistent with the anisotropy TEMC caused by the anisotropy of primary dendrite or primary dendrite network under magnetic field. Finally, the mechanism of synergism effect of the anisotropy TEMC,the distribution of solute Al and the PDAS on freckle formation and evolution is studied during directional solidification under magnetic field. | Shaodong Hu Long Hou Kang Wang Zhongmiao Liao Wen Zhu Aihua Yi Wenfang Li Yves Fautrelle Xi Li | 2021 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,17: | 4

Effects of timing and duration under brackish water mulch drip irrigation on cotton yield in northern Xinjiang,China显示文摘The brackish water is an important potential water source and has frequently been utilized to drip-irrigate cotton due to the water shortage in the arid region of Xinjiang, northwestern of China. The brackish water is usually saline water with salinity ranging from 1 g/L to 5 g/L,which is widely distributed in this area,so the reasonable use of that brackish water may not only play a vital role in the local agricultural production, but also save plenty of freshwater. However, irrigation with brackish water usually causes the reduction of crop yield and soil salinization which can negatively impact plants through three major components:osmotic, nutritious and toxic stresses. Therefore,a field experiment, with eight different time-series irrigation modes using brackish water(3.5±0.2)g/L and freshwater(<1 g/L),beneath a combined film and drip-irrigation system was carried out to study the changes of soil salt content and cotton yield aiming to search for a balanced method during the 2 cotton growing seasons in 2012 and 2013.The results indicated that the time-series irrigation modes determined the soil salinity and moisture distribution based on observed spatio-temporal distribution of water content and electric conductivity, and soil salinity generally gathered at the depth of 0-10 cm and 60 cm of soil with the increase of irrigation quota. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the yields of cotton which was grown using brackish water and freshwater were better than those only using freshwater and the soil salinity with reasonable irrigation timing was not accumulated obviously. | Wang Chunxia Yang Guang Li Junfeng He Xinlin Xue Lianqing Long Aihua | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,6: | 1
A cultivated area forecasting approach in artificial oases under climate change and human activities显示文摘The cultivated area in artificial oases is deeply influenced by global climate change and human activities. Thus, forecasting cultivated area in artificial oases under climate change and human activities is of great significance. In this study,an approach named GD-HM-PSWROAM,consisting of general circulation model downscaling(GD),hydrological model(HM),and planting structure and water resource optimal allocation model(PSWROAM),was developed and applied in the irrigation district of the Manas River Basin in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China to forecast the cultivated area tendency.Furthermore, the catchment export of the MIKE11 HD/NAM model was set to the Kensiwate hydrological station. The results show that the downscaling effects of temperature can be fairly satisfying, while those of precipitation may be not satisfying but acceptable.Simulation capacity of the MIKE11 HD/NAM model on the discharge in the Kensiwate hydrological station can meet the requirements of running the PSWROAM.The accuracy of the PSWROAM indicated that this model can perform well in predicting the change of cultivated area at the decadal scale. The cultivated area in the Manas River Basin under current human activities may be generally decreasing due to the climate change. But the adverse effects of climate change can be weakened or even eliminated through positive human activities. The cultivated area in the Manas River Basin may even be increasing under assumed human activities and future climate scenarios. The effects of human activities in the future can be generally predicted and quantified according to the cultivated area trends under current human activities and the situations in the study area.Overall,it is rational and acceptable to forecast the cultivated area tendency in artificial oases under future climate change and human activities through the GD-HM-PSWROAM approach. | ZHANG Shaobo CHEN Fulong CHEN Jie WANG Jing LI Shaofei LONG Aihua | 2019 | Journal of Arid Land2019,11,3: | 1

Morphology-dependent activation of hydrogen peroxide with Cu_(2)O for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation in bicarbonate aqueous solution显示文摘The design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts in bicarbonate-activated hydrogen peroxide systems(BAP)is a hot topic in wastewater treatment. In this work,Cu_(2)O nanoparticles with different morphologies including cubic shape(c-Cu_(2)O),octahedron shape(o-Cu_(2)O)and spherical shape(s-Cu_(2)O),were applied in BAP for the first time to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride(TC).Compared with Cu^(2+)ions and CuO,TC degradation was boosted in the presence of Cu_(2)O in the BAP system, with the degradation rate following the order c-Cu_(2)O>o-Cu_(2)O>s-Cu_(2)O.The morphology-dependent effects could be linearly correlated with the ratio of surface oxygen species(O_S),but not with the surface area or Cu(Ⅰ)ratio. The c-Cu_(2)O catalyst with exposure of(100)facets contained 76.6%O_Sas the active site for H_(2)O_(2)adsorption and activation, while the value was much lower for o-Cu_(2)O and s-Cu_(2)O with dominant(111)facets.The presence of HCO_(3)-enhanced the interactions among Cu_(2)O,H_(2)O_(2)and TC,leading to facile oxidation of Cu(Ⅰ)to Cu(Ⅱ)by H_(2)O_(2),and the formation of various reactive species such as hydroxyl radicals and Cu(Ⅲ)contributed to TC degradation. This work provides a new method for enhancing H_(2)O_(2)activation with heterogeneous catalysts by crystal facet engineering. | Xiuying Liu Qianna Xia Jiao Zhou Bowen Li Shuaiqi Zhao Long Chen Aimal Khan Xiaoxia Li Aihua Xu | 2024 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2024,,3: | 0
Land use/cover and landscape pattern changes in Manas River Basin based on remote sensing显示文摘Large-scale water and soil development in inland river basins in arid areas has made changes in landscape composition and structure, threatening the ecological balance. In order to study the trend of land use/cover and landscape pattern change and its relationship with water resources utilization in Manas River Basin, the land-use data of five periods in 1976,1990,2000,2010 and 2015 were analyzed. The results showed that:(1)During 1976-2015,farmland and construction land continuously increased, forest land and grassland continuously decreased, the water area initially reduced and then increased, the area of saline-alkali land initially increased and then reduced, the overall trend of unused land and the sandy area was decreasing and the area of different time periods is floating. The areas of land-use types either increased or decreased. This indicates that the landscape pattern of the basin changes dramatically, and human activities are the main reasons for this phenomenon;(2)The oasis area increased from 3480.2 km2 in 1976 to 7982.0 km2 in 2015,with an obvious increasing trend. The oasis area clearly increased during 1976-1990,the growth rate was 40.6%,the growth rate of the oasis area was 129.4%.In the last 40 years, the degree of desertification fluctuated and decreased. The increase of the oasis area directly leads to the increase of water resources utilization and aggravates the degree of water resources shortage;(3)The pattern of land-use types showed a non-equilibrium trend. In the region with increasing landscape heterogeneity, the overall landscape pattern was increasingly controlled by the majority of patches. The intensive land management model and drip irrigation under mulch have improved the utilization efficiency of water resources and saved water resources from engineering renovation and irrigation management. | Xiaolong Li Xinlin He Guang Yang Hongguang Liu Aihua Long Fulong Chen Bing Liu Xinchen Gu | 2020 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2020,13,5: | 0
Spatiotemporal changes and influencing factors of the intensity of agricultural water footprint in Xinjiang, China显示文摘Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the largest agricultural high-efficiency water-saving arid area in China, was adopted to explore the coupling relationship between agricultural water consumption and economic benefits, which is of great significance to guiding the efficient utilization and sustainable development of agricultural water resources. This study utilizes an indicator, termed the Agricultural Water Footprint Intensity(short as AWFI,which means the amount of water resource consumed per unit of agricultural GDP),to study the economic benefits of agricultural water in Xinjiang from 1991-2018.In addition, the Theil index,a measure of the imbalance between individuals or regions, was used to study the evolution in the spatial differences in water efficiency, and the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index(LMDI)method was applied to quantify the factors driving the AWFI.The results showed that AWFI in Xinjiang has experienced three stages:obvious decline, stable and slow decline, which decreased from 16114 m^(3)/10^(4) CNY to 2100 m^(3)/10^(4) CNY,decreasing by 86.97%.The Theil index indicated that the spatial evolution of 14 prefectures(cities)resembled an inverted N-shaped Kuznets curve over time.Among the influencing factors, the contributions of water-saving technology and planting structure to the change in the AWFI in Xinjiang,China from 1991 to 2018 were 154.03%and−37.98%,respectively.The total contribution to AWFI of the total population, urbanization rate, and production scale was−16.06%.This study concluded that further improvements in the economic benefits of agricultural water consumption can be obtained by continuing to promote more efficient or“water-conservation”irrigation technologies(engineering aspects),adjusting the planting structure(policy guidance aspects),and intensive management of cultivated land(management aspects). | Yanyun Wang Aihua Long Xiaoya Deng Abuduaini Abulizi Jie Wang Pei Zhang Yang Hai Cai Ren Ji Zhang Yundong Liu Weiming Zhao | 2023 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2023,16,3: | 0
Evaluating agricultural water-use efficiency based on water footprint of crop values: a case study in Xinjiang of China显示文摘Efficient agricultural water use is crucial for food safety and water conservation on a global scale. To quantitatively investigate the agricultural water-use efficiency in regions exhibiting the complex agricultural structure, this study developed an indicator named water footprint of crop values(WFV) that is based on the water footprint of crop production. Defined as the water volume used to produce a unit price of crop(m^3/CNY), the new indicator makes it feasible to directly compare the water footprint of different crops from an economic perspective, so as to comprehensively evaluate the water-use efficiency under the complex planting structure. On the basis of WFV, the study further proposed an indicator of structural water-use coefficient(SWUC), which is represented by the ratio of water-use efficiency for a given planting structure to the water efficiency for a reference crop and can quantitatively describe the impact of planting structure on agricultural water efficiency. Then, a case study was implemented in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. The temporal and spatial variations of WFV were assessed for the planting industries in 14 prefectures and cities of Xinjiang between 1991 and 2015. In addition, contribution rate analysis of WFV for different prefectures and cities was conducted to evaluate the variations of WFV caused by different influencing factors: agricultural input, climatic factors, and planting structure. Results from these analyses indicated first that the average WFV of planting industries in Xinjiang significantly decreased from 0.293 m^3/CNY in 1991 to 0.153 m^3/CNY in 2015, corresponding to an average annual change rate of –3.532%. WFV in 13 prefectures and cities(with the exception of Karamay) has declined significantly during the period of 1991–2015, indicating that agricultural water-use efficient has effectively improved. Second, the average SWUC in Xinjiang decreased from 1.17 to 1.08 m^3/CNY in the 1990 s, and then declined to 1.00 m^3/CNY in 2011–2015. The value of SWUC was highly consistent with the relative value of WFV in most prefectures and cities, showing that planting structure is one of the primary factors affecting regional agricultural water-use efficiency. Third, the contribution rate of WFV variations from human factors including agricultural input and planting structure was much more significant than that from climatic factors. However, the distribution of agricultural input and the adjustment of planting structure significantly differed among prefectures and cities, suggesting regional imbalances of agricultural development. This study indicated the feasibility and effectiveness of controlling agricultural water use through increasing technical input and rational selection of crops in the face of impending climate change. Specifically, we concluded that, the rational application of chemical fertilizers, the development of the fruit industry, and the strict restriction of the cotton industry should be implemented to improve the agricultural water-use efficiency in Xinjiang. | HAI Yang LONG Aihua ZHANG Pei DENG Xiaoya LI Junfeng DENG Mingjiang | 2020 | Journal of Arid Land2020,12,4: | 0
