| 1 | Effect of quercetin against lindane induced alterations in the serum and hepatic tissue lipids in wistar rats显示文摘Objective:To assess the effect of quercetin(flavonoid) against lindane induced alterations in lipid profile of wistar rats.Methods:Rats were administered orally with lindane(100 mg/kg body weight) and quercetin(10 mg/kg body weight) for 30 days.After the end of treatment period lipid profile was estimated in serum and tissue.Results:Elevated levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides,low density lipoprotein(LDL),very Low Density Lipoprotein(VLDL) and tissue triglycerides,cholesterol with concomitant decrease in serum HDL and tissue phospholipids were decreased in lindane treated rats were found to be significantly decreased in the quercetin and lindane co-treated rats.Conclusions:Our study suggests that quercetin has hypolipidemic effect and offers protection against lindane induced toxicity in liver by restoring the altered levels of lipids.The quercetin cotreatment along with lindane for 30 days reversed these biochemical alterations in lipids induced by lindane. | Viswanadha Vijaya Padma Gurusamy Lalitha Nichokon Puthanveedu Shirony Rathinasamy Baskaran | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,11: | 9 |
| 2 | Low-noise 1.3 μm InAs/GaAs quantum dot laser monolithically grown on silicon显示文摘We report low-noise, high-performance single transverse mode 1.3 μm InAs/GaAs quantum dot lasers monolithically grown on silicon(Si) using molecular beam epitaxy. The fabricated narrow-ridge-waveguide Fabry–Perot(FP) lasers have achieved a room-temperature continuous-wave(CW) threshold current of 12.5 mA and high CW temperature tolerance up to 90°C. An ultra-low relative intensity noise of less than-150 dB∕Hz is measured in the 4–16 GHz range. Using this low-noise Si-based laser, we then demonstrate 25.6 Gb/s data transmission over13.5 km SMF-28. | 4 | Oral microbiota and host innate immune response in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw显示文摘Bacterial biofilms have emerged as potential critical triggers in the pathogenesis of bisphosphonate(BP)-related osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ) or BRONJ. BRONJ lesions have shown to be heavily colonized by oral bacteria, most of these difficult to cultivate and presents many clinical challenges. The purpose of this study was to characterize the bacterial diversity in BRONJ lesions and to determine host immune response. We examined tissue specimens from three cohorts(n530); patients with periodontal disease without a history of BP therapy(Control, n510), patients with periodontal disease having history of BP therapy but without ONJ(BP, n55) and patients with BRONJ(BRONJ, n515). Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-amplified 16 S r RNA gene fragments revealed less bacterial diversity in BRONJ than BP and Control cohorts. Sequence analysis detected six phyla with predominant affiliation to Firmicutes in BRONJ(71.6%), BP(70.3%) and Control(59.1%). Significant differences(P,0.05) in genera were observed, between Control/BP, Control/BRONJ and BP/BRONJ cohorts. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)results indicated that the levels of myeloperoxidase were significantly lower, whereas interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels were moderately elevated in BRONJ patients as compared to Controls. PCR array showed significant changes in BRONJ patients with downregulation of host genes, such as nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing protein 2, and cathepsin G, the key modulators for antibacterial response and upregulation of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor, proteinase 3 and conserved helix–loop–helix ubiquitous kinase. | 5 | Structural and molecular features of intestinal strictures in rats with Crohn's-like disease显示文摘AIM: To develop a new rat model we wanted to gain a better understanding of stricture formation in Crohn's disease(CD).METHODS: Chronic colitis was induced locally by the administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid(TNBS). The relapsing inflammation characteristic to CD was mimicked by repeated TNBS treatments. Animals were randomly divided into control, once, twice and three times TNBS-treated groups. Control animals received an enema of saline. Tissue samples were taken from the strictured colonic segments and also adjacent proximally and distally to its 60, 90 or 120 d after the last TNBS or saline administrations. The frequency and macroscopic extent of the strictures were measured on digital photographs. The structural features of strictured gut wall were studied by light- and electron microscopy. Inflammation related alterations in TGF-beta 2 and 3, matrix metalloproteinases 9(MMP9) and TIMP1 m RNA and protein expression were determined by quantitative real-time PCR and western blot analysis. The quantitative distribution of caspase 9 was determined by post-embedding immunohistochemistry.RESULTS: Intestinal strictures first appeared 60 d after TNBS treatments and the frequency of them increased up to day 120. From day 90 an intact lamina epithelialis, reversible thickening of lamina muscularis mucosae and irreversible thickening of the muscularis externa were demonstrated in the strictured colonic segments. Nevertheless the morphological signs of apoptosis were frequently seen and excess extracellular matrix deposition was recorded between smooth muscle cells(SMCs). Enhanced caspase 9 expression on day 90 in the SMCs and on day 120 also in myenteric neurons indicated the induction of apoptosis. The m RNA expression profile of TGF-betas after repeated TNBS doses was characteristic to CD, TGF-beta 2, but not TGF-beta 3 was up-regulated. Overexpression of MMP9 and down-regulation of TIMP1 were demonstrated.
