Neural substrates of data-driven scientific discovery:An fMRI study during performance of number series completion task显示文摘Although much has been known about how humans psychologically perform data-driven scientific discovery, less has been known about its brain mechanism. The number series completion is a typical data-driven scientific discovery task, and has been demonstrated to possess the priming effect, which is attributed to the regularity identification and its subsequent extrapolation. In order to reduce the heterogeneities and make the experimental task proper for a brain imaging study, the number magnitude and arithmetic operation involved in number series completion tasks are further restricted.Behavioral performance in Experiment 1 shows the reliable priming effect for targets as expected. Then,a factorial design (the priming effect:prime vs.target;the period length:simple vs.complex) of event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used in Experiment 2 to examine the neural basis of data-driven scientific discovery. The fMRI results reveal a double dissociation of the left DLPFC (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) and the left APFC (anterior prefrontal cortex) between the simple (period length=1) and the complex (period length=2) number series completion task. The priming effect in the left DLPFC is more significant for the simple task than for the complex task, while the priming effect in the left APFC is more significant for the complex task than for the simple task. The reliable double dissociation may suggest the different roles of the left DLPFC and left APFC in data-driven scientific discovery. The left DLPFC (BA 46) may play a crucial role in rule identification, while the left APFC (BA 10) may be related to mental set maintenance needed during rule identification and extrapolation.ZHONG Ning LIANG PeiPeng QIN YuLin LU ShengFu YANG YanHui LI KunCheng 2011Science China(Life Sciences)2011,54,5:8
Identification of the candidate genes associated with cellular rejection in pig-to-human xenotransplantation显示文摘To identify the genes associated with cellular rejection in pig-to-human xenotransplantation, the suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was used in screening the up-regulated genes from a co-culture of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and porcine vascular endothelial cell line PIEC. The up-regulated cDNAs were cloned into pGEM-T Easy vector and then sequenced. Nucleic acid homology searches were performed using the BLAST program. A subtracted cDNA library including about 300 clones with the expected up-regulated genes was obtained. Twenty-four of these clones were analyzed by sequencing and homology comparison was made. These clones represent the genes of human perforin (PRF1), proteasome, lymphocyte specific interferon regulatory factor/interferon regulatory factor 4 (LSIRF/IRF 4), muscleblind-like (MBNL) protein and a porcine expressed sequence tag (EST) which has 81% homology with human oxidative-stress responsive 1 (OSR 1). These genes might be the candidate genes which are associated with cellular rejection in pig-to-human xenotransplantation.HU Weimin, CHENG Jingqiu, LI Youping , LI Shengfu, LU Xiaofeng and WAN Lin(Laboratory of Transplant Engineering and Immunology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China) 2002Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2002,12,9:3

Exceptionally Preserved Caddisfly Larval Cases(Insecta) from the Lower Cretaceous of the Liupanshan Basin, Western China显示文摘Abundant well-preserved tubular fossils of caddisfly(Insecta: Trichoptera) larval cases are reported from the Early Cretaceous Madongshan and Naijiahe formations of the Liupanshan Basin, Ningxia Province, western China. Most cases were mainly preserved in life position and densely packed in various layers. Individual cases in each layer tended to be same in size and were erect and parallel to one another and open at both ends. In a transverse section cut perpendicular to the long axis of the cases, individual case appears to form a rounded ring. Small cases are elliptic in a cross-section oblique to the long axis of the cases. Tube walls are nearly subparallel to one another in longitudinal section with both ends being open. The caudal end of the case slightly tapers and usually points downward. The cases were closely packed, almost touching with one another and lacking bifurcate or connecting structure. The overwhelming majority of cases were partially or fully filled with calcite. The case wall embraces a medium particle layer flanked by inner and outer organic layers. Individual particles are ovate in outline and comprise cryptocrystalline or ganic pellets. SEM imaging shows that those pellets are sub-cylindrical in outline and elliptic in cross section, and are made primarily of calcium carbonate. All features observed justify the assignment of the Liupanshan caddisfly cases to ichnogenus Coprindusia. The extinct insect Ningxiapsyche fangi was found in association with the Liupanshan caddisfly larval cases, and thus could be the candidate of the potential trace-maker.Xin He Zhong-Qiang Chen Zongsheng Lu Jun Li Wei Hu Shengfu Li Zhitao Xu 2015Journal of Earth Science2015,26,2:1

Parietal cortex contributions to information granules following memory consolidation显示文摘Previous studies have focused on changes in cerebral cortex activity accompanying memory formation and consolidation.Although the role of the parietal cortex in memory retrieval is well established,it is not well understood how parietal cortex memory consolidation for mathematical rules is related to granularity of stored information(i.e.,degree of detail or precision).Changes in parietal cortex activity associated with memory consolidation were analyzed using the Ebbinghaus paradigm and functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI).Over the course of 1 week, participants learned Boolean arithmetic tasks involving stimulus-response mapping rules containing either low-or high-granularity information.FMRI images were collected on day 1(i.e., low-granularity condition)and day 7(i.e.,high-granularity condition). The present data suggested that with practice, stored information was converted from a low-granularity to a high-granularity form.By following rule learning,it was hypothesized that the process of consolidation would involve an increased degree of rule representation granularity.Evidence for this process was reflected in parietal cortex activity. This finding was consistent with the hypothesis that mnemonic reconstruction in the parietal cortex is required for memory consolidation, and results suggested that information granules are formed during memory consolidation. The present results could increase the understanding of the relationship between memory consolidation and information granularity.WANG XiuZhen ZHONG Ning LU ShengFu LI KunCheng LANG ShuLei 2010Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,24:1
Short-term feeding behaviour sound classification method for sheep using LSTM networks显示文摘A deep learning approach using long-short term memory(LSTM)networks was implemented in this study to classify the sound of short-term feeding behaviour of sheep, including biting, chewing, bolus regurgitation, and rumination chewing. The original acoustic signal was split into sound episodes using an endpoint detection method, where the thresholds of short-term energy and average zero-crossing rate were utilized.A discrete wavelet transform(DWT),Mel-frequency cepstral, and principal-component analysis(PCA)were integrated to extract the dimensionally reduced DWT based Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients(denoted by PW_MFCC)for each sound episode. Then,LSTM networks were employed to train classifiers for sound episode category classification. The performances of the LSTM classifiers with original Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients(MFCC),DWT based MFCC(denoted by W_MFCC),and PW_MFCC as the input feature coefficients were compared.Comparison results demonstrated that the introduction of DWT improved the classifier performance effectively, and PCA reduced the computational overhead without degrading classifier performance. The overall accuracy and comprehensive F1-score of the PW_MFCC based LSTM classifier were 94.97%and 97.41%,respectively.The classifier established in this study provided a foundation for an automatic identification system for sick sheep with abnormal feeding and rumination behaviour pattern.Guanghui Duan Shengfu Zhang Mingzhou Lu Cedric Okinda Mingxia Shen Tomas Norton 2021International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2021,14,2:0
