Taxus chinensis ameliorates diabetic nephropathy through down-regulating TGF-β1/Smad pathway显示文摘Diabetic nephropathy(DN) is one of the common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus. Renal fibrosis is closely related to the deterioration of renal function. The present study aimed to investigate protective effect of Taxus chinensis on high-fat diet/streptozotocin-induced DN in rats and explore the underlying mechanism of action. The rat DN model was established via feeding high fat diet for 4 weeks and subsequently injecting streptozotocin(30 mg·kg^(-1) body weight) intraperitoneally. The rats with blood glucose levels higher than 16.8 mmol·L^(-1) were selected for experiments. The DN rats were treated with Taxus chinensis orally(0.32, 0.64, and 1.28 g·kg^(-1)) once a day for 8 weeks. Taxus chinensis significantly improved the renal damage, which was indicated by the decreases in 24-h urinary albumin excretion rate, blood serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen. Histopathological examination confirmed the protective effect of Taxus chinensis. The thickness of glomerular basement membrane was reduced, and proliferation of mesangial cells and podocytes cells and increase in mesangial matrix were attenuated. Further experiments showed that Taxus chinensis treatment down-regulated the expression of TGF-β1 and α-SMA, inhibited phosphorylation of Smad2 and Smad3. These results demonstrated that Taxus chinensis alleviated renal injuries in DN rats, which may be associated with suppressing TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway. | WENG Hong-Bo HAN Wen-Ke XIONG Yan-Wen JIN Zhou-Hui LAN Zhen LIU Cheng ZHANG Xue-Mei PENG Wen | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2018,16,2: | 28
Effects of Short-Term Forest Bathing on Human Health in a Broad-Leaved Evergreen Forest in Zhejiang Province,China显示文摘Objective To investigate the effects of short-term forest bathing on human health. Methods Twenty healthy male university students participated as subjects and were randomly divided into two groups of 10.One group was sent on a two-night trip to a broad-leaved evergreen forest, and the other was sent to a city area.Serum cytokine levels reflecting inflammatory and stress response, indicators reflecting oxidative stress, the distribution of leukocyte subsets, and plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) concentrations were measured before and after the experiment to evaluate the positive health effects of forest environments.A profile of mood states (POMS) evaluation was used to assess changes in mood states. Results No significant differences in the baseline values of the indicators were observed between the two groups before the experiment.Subjects exposed to the forest environment showed reduced oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory level,as evidenced by decreased malondialdehyde,interleukin-6,and tumor necrosis factor α levels compared with the urban group.Serum cortisol levels were also lower than in the urban group.Notably, the concentration of plasma ET-1 was much lower in subjects exposed to the forest environment. The POMS evaluation showed that after exposure to the forest environment, subjects had lower scores in the negative subscales, and the score for vigor was increased. Conclusion Forest bathing is beneficial to human health, perhaps through preventive effects related to several pathological factors. | MAO Gen Xiang LAN Xiao Guang CAO Yong Bao CHEN Zhuo Mei HE Zhi Huat LV Yuan Dong WANG Ya Zhen HU Xi Lian WANG Guo Fu YAN Jing | 2012 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2012,25,3: | 20
Acupuncture improves dendritic structure and spatial learning and memory ability of Alzheimer's disease mice显示文摘Acupuncture can improve the cognitive state of Alzheimer's disease, but its mechanism is not clear. Dendritic atrophy and synaptic loss in Alzheimer's disease brain are positively correlated with cognitive damage. Therefore, we speculated that the effect of acupuncture on improving cognitive function may be associated with reduced dendritic damage in the brain. Acupuncture at Qihai(CV6), Zhongwan(CV12), Danzhong(CV17), bilateral Zusanli(ST36), and bilateral Xuehai(SP10) acupoints was performed once a day(1-day rest after 6-day treatment) for 14 consecutive days. Senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8(SAMP8) mice without acupuncture and senescence-accelerated mouse resistant 1(SAMR1) mice were used as normal controls. After 14 days of treatment, spatial learning and memory ability of mice was assessed in each group using the Morris water maze. Dendritic changes of pyramidal cells in the hippocampal CA1 region were analyzed by quantitative Golgi staining. Our results showed that acupuncture shortened escape latency and lengthened retention time of the former platform quadrant in SAMP8 mice. Further, SAMP8 mice exhibited a significant increase in the number of apical and basal dendritic branches and total length of apical and basal dendrites after acupuncture. These results suggest that acupuncture improves spatial learning and memory ability of middle-aged SAMP8 mice by ameliorating dendritic structure. | Bo-Hong Kan Jian-Chun Yu Lan Zhao Jie Zhao Zhen Li Yan-Rong Suo Jing-Xian Han | 2018 | Neural Regeneration Research2018,13,8: | 18
Coinfection with influenza A virus enhances SARS-CoV-2 infectivity显示文摘The upcoming flu season in the Northern Hemisphere merging with the current COVID-19 pandemic raises a potentially severe threat to public health.Through experimental coinfection with influenza A virus(IAV)and either pseudotyped or live SARS-CoV-2 virus,we found that IAV preinfection significantly promoted the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in a broad range of cell types.Remarkably,in vivo, increased SARS-CoV-2 viral load and more severe lung damage were observed in mice coinfected with IAV.Moreover, such enhancement of SARS-CoV-2 infectivity was not observed with several other respiratory viruses, likely due to a unique feature of IAV to elevate ACE2 expression. This study illustrates that IAV has a unique ability to aggravate SARS-CoV-2 infection, and thus, prevention of IAV infection is of great significance during the COVID-19 pandemic. | Lei Bai Yongliang Zhao Jiazhen Dong Simeng Liang Ming Guo Xinjin Liu Xin Wang Zhixiang Huang Xiaoyi Sun Zhen Zhang Lianghui Dong Qianyun Liu Yucheng Zheng Danping Niu Min Xiang Kun Song Jiajie Ye Wenchao Zheng Zhidong Tang Mingliang Tang Yu Zhou Chao Shen Li Zhou Yu Chen Huan Yan Ke Lan Ke Xu | 2021 | Cell Research2021,31,4: | 16

CCL5/CCR5 axis in human diseases and related treatments显示文摘To defense harmful stimuli or maintain the immune homeostasis, the body produces and recruits a superfamily of cytokines such as interleukins, interferons, chemokines etc. Among them, chemokines act as crucial regulators in defense systems. CCL5/CCR5 combination is known for facilitating inflammatory responses, as well as inducing the adhesion and migration of different T cell subsets in immune responses. In addition, recent studies have shown that the interaction between CCL5 and CCR5 is involved in various pathological processes including inflammation, chronic diseases, cancers as well as the infection of COVID-19. This review focuses on how CCL5/CCR5 axis participates in the pathological processes of different diseases and their relevant signaling pathways for the regulation of the axis. Moreover, we highlighted the gene therapy and chemotherapy studies for treating CCR5-related diseases, including the ongoing clinical trials. The barriers and perspectives for future application and translational research were also summarized. | Zhen Zeng Tianxia Lan Yuquan Wei Xiawei Wei | 2022 | Genes & Diseases2022,9,1: | 12

Fenton Reagent Generated in Electrolysis Cell and Its Usage in Degradation and Decolorization of Dyes显示文摘The Electro-chemistry process to produce Fenton reagents has been described. The in situ oxidation of dyes, acid chrome and alizarin red(Fenton reagents) with electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals was investigated. The \{ I-V \} cyclic voltammograms were measured. The redox peaks of the dyes were not observed in the treated dye solutions instead of a couple of O2/H2O2 redox peaks. The IR results indicate that acid chrome dye was decomposed into naphthylamine and phenol aminophenol sulfonic acid. The degradation and the decolorization of the dyes were comfirmed by the visible spectrum and the chemical analysis. | 11 | Association of Overlapped and Un-overlapped Comorbidities with COVID-19 Severity and Treatment Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study from Nine Provinces in China显示文摘Objective Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear. Methods A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients’ medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI) of the associations between comorbidities(cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19.Results Overall, 158(13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32(2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension(2.87, 1.30–6.32), type 2 diabetes(T2 DM)(3.57, 2.32–5.49),cardiovascular disease(CVD)(3.78, 1.81–7.89), fatty liver disease(7.53, 1.96–28.96), hyperlipidemia(2.15, 1.26–3.67), other lung diseases(6.00, 3.01–11.96), and electrolyte imbalance(10.40, 3.00–26.10)were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2 DM(6.07, 2.89–12.75), CVD(8.47,6.03–11.89), and electrolyte imbalance(19.44, 11.47–32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission(5.46,3.25–9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes(6.58, 1.46–29.64) within two weeks. Conclusion Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease, while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes. | MA Yan ZHU Dong Shan CHEN Ren Bo SHI Nan Nan LIU Si Hong FAN Yi Pin WU Gui Hui YANG Pu Ye BAI Jiang Feng CHEN Hong CHEN Li Ying FENG Qiao GUO Tuan Mao HOU Yong HU Gui Fen HU Xiao Mei HU Yun Hong HUANG Jin HUANG Qiu Hua HUANG Shao Zhen JI Liang JIN Hai Hao LEI Xiao LI Chun Yan LI Min Qing LI Qun Tang LI Xian Yong LIU Hong De LIU Jin Ping LIU Zhang MA Yu Ting MAO Ya MO Liu Fen NA Hui WANG Jing Wei SONG Fang Li SUN Sheng WANG Dong Ting WANG Ming Xuan WANG Xiao Yan WANG Yin Zhen WANG Yu Dong WU Wei WU Lan Ping XIAO Yan Hua XIE Hai Jun XU Hong Ming XU Shou Fang XUE Rui Xia YANG Chun YANG Kai Jun YUAN Sheng Li ZHANG Gong Qi ZHANG Jin Bo ZHANG Lin Song ZHAO Shu Sen ZHAO Wan Ying ZHENG Kai ZHOU Ying Chun ZHU Jun Teng ZHU Tian Qing ZHANG Hua Min WANG Yan Ping WANG Yong Yan 无 | 2020 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2020,33,12: | 8
Sustainable Practice in Pavement Engineering through Value-Added Collective Recycling of Waste Plastic and Waste Tyre Rubber显示文摘Waste plastics, such as waste polyethylene terephthalate(PET)beverage bottles and waste rubber tyres are major municipal solid wastes, which may lead to various environmental problems if they are not appropriately recycled. In this study, the feasibility of collectively recycling the two types of waste into performance-increasing modifiers for asphalt pavements was analyzed. This study aimed to investigate the recycling mechanisms of waste PET-derived additives under the treatment of two amines, triethylenetetramine(TETA)and ethanolamine(EA),and characterize the performances of these additives in modifying rubberized bitumen,a bitumen modified by waste tyre rubber. To this end, infrared spectroscopy and thermal analyses were carried out on the two PET-derived additives(PET–TETA and PET–EA).In addition, infrared spectroscopy, viscosity, dynamic shear rheology, and multiple stress creep recovery tests were performed on the rubberized bitumen samples modified by the two PET-derived additives. We concluded that waste PET can be chemically upcycled into functional additives, which can increase the overall performance of the rubberized bitumen. The recycling method developed in this study not only helps alleviate the landfilling problems of both waste PET plastic and scrap tyres, but also turns these wastes into value-added new materials for building durable pavements. | Xiong Xu Zhen Leng Jingting Lan Wei Wang Jiangmiao Yu Yawei Bai Anand Sreeram Jing Hu | 2021 | Engineering2021,7,6: | 7
Validity of the Chinese Version of the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) in Lung Cancer Patients显示文摘The prevalence of malnutrition is high among oncology patients in China. Although the Patient- Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) is widely recognized as an important nutritional assessment tool, it has not been validated for Chinese cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to conduct an analysis of nutrition screening and assessment data to validate the Chinese version of the PG-SGA in Chinese patients with lung cancer. This was an observational, cross-sectional study of 2,000 consecutive adult patients with lung cancer treated at several tertiary hospitals in China. Anthropometric and patient descriptive data were collected. The PG-SGA generated a score for the nutritional risk and a global rating for the nutritional status. The internal consistency, external consistency, and construct validity were evaluated, and a known-groups comparison and principal component analyses were conducted to evaluate the reliability and validity of the PG-SGA. The known-groups comparison demonstrated the ability of the PG-SGA to differentiate lung cancer patients of different nutritional and body mass index (BMI) groups. A confirmatory factor analysis supported the original four-factor structure of the PG-SGA. In terms of the internal and external consistency, the PG-SGA demonstrated intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) up to 0.987. Alternative form validity was also demonstrated between Box 4 of the PG-SGA and the Karnofsky Performance Status score, with excellent external consistency (r = 0.972, P < 0.001). The construct validity was supported, and selected questionnaire dimensions were evident in the principal component analysis. Significant Spearman correlations (P < 0.001) were demonstrated. The Chinese version of the PG-SGA demonstrated significant reliability and sufficient exploratory properties to support its validity. It seems to be a valid tool that can be used to access the nutritional status of Chinese lung cancer patients. The validity of the PG-SGA in Chinese cancer patients warrants further investigation in other cancer types. | Zhen Ming Fu Hong Xia Xu Chun Hua Song Wei Li Zeng Qing Guo Yuan Lin Ying Ying Shi Wen Hu Yi Ba Su Yi Li Zeng Ning Li Kun Hua Wang Jing Wu Ying He Jia Jun Yang Cong Hua Xie Xin Xia Song Gong Yan Chen Wen Jun Ma Su Xia Luo Zi Hua Chen Ming Hua Cong Hu Ma Chun Ling Zhou Wei Wang Qi Luo Yong Mei Shi Yu Mei Qi Hai Ping Jiang Wen Xian Guan Jun Qiang Chen Jia Xin Chen Yu Fang Lan Zhou Yong Dong Feng Rong Shao Tan Tao Li Jun Wen Ou Qing Chuan Zhao Jian Xiong Wu Chang Wang Han Ping Shi The Investigation on Nutrition Status and Clinical Outcome of Common Cancers (INSCOC) Group | 2016 | Journal of Nutritional Oncology2016,1,1: | 7
Ternary Organic Solar Cells Based on Two Non-fullerene Acceptors with Complimentary Absorption and Balanced Crystallinity显示文摘Summary of main observation and conclusion The ternary blend structure has been demonstrated as an effective approach to increase the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells. An effective approach to enhance the power conversion efficiency of ternary solar cells is based on two non-fullerene acceptors with complimentary absorption range and balanced crystallinity. In this work,we have introduced a high crystallinity small-molecule acceptor, named C8IDTT-4CI with appropriate alkyl side chains into a low crystalline blend of conjugated polymer donor PBDT-TPD and fused-ring electron acceptor ITIC-4F.A ternary device based on the blend PBDT-TPD:1TIC-4F:C81DTT-4CI exhibits a best power conversion efficiency of 9.51%with a simultaneous improvement of the short-circuit current density to 18.76 mA-cm^-2 and the fill factor up to 67.53%.The absorption onset for C8IDTT-4CI is located at 900 nm,so that the well complementary light absorption is beneficial to the photocurrent. In addition, the existence of high crystallinity C8IDTT-4CI in the ternary device is found helpful to modulate crystallinity, improve heterojunction morphologies and stacking structure, therefore to realize higher charge mobility and better performance. | Lan Xie Chen Yang Ruimin Zhou Zhen Wang Jianqi Zhang Kun Lu Zhixiang Wei | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Chemistry2020,38,9: | 7
Combined acupuncture and HuangDiSan treatment affects behavior and synaptophysin levels in the hippocampus of senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 after neural stem cell transplantation显示文摘Sanjiao acupuncture and Huang Di San can promote the proliferation, migration and differentiation of exogenous neural stem cells in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8(SAMP8) mice and can improve learning and memory impairment and behavioral function in dementia-model mice. Thus, we sought to determine whether Sanjiao acupuncture and Huang Di San can elevate the effect of neural stem cell transplantation in Alzheimer's disease model mice. Sanjiao acupuncture was used to stimulate Danzhong(CV17), Zhongwan(CV12), Qihai(CV6), bilateral Xuehai(SP10) and bilateral Zusanli(ST36) 15 days before and after implantation of neural stem cells(5 × 105) into the hippocampal dentate gyrus of SAMP8 mice. Simultaneously, 0.2 m L Huang Di San, containing Rehmannia Root and Chinese Angelica, was intragastrically administered. Our results demonstrated that compared with mice undergoing neural stem cell transplantation alone, learning ability was significantly improved and synaptophysin m RNA and protein levels were greatly increased in the hippocampus of mice undergoing both Sanjiao acupuncture and intragastric administration of Huang Di San. We conclude that the combination of Sanjiao acupuncture and Huang Di San can effectively improve dementia symptoms in mice, and the mechanism of this action might be related to the regulation of synaptophysin expression. | Chun-lei Zhou Lan Zhao Hui-yan Shi Jian-wei Liu liang-wei Shi Bo-hong Kan Zhen Li lian-chun Yu Jing-xian Han | 2018 | Neural Regeneration Research2018,13,3: | 6
Effects of Outdoor Temperature on Blood Pressure in a Prospective Cohort of Northwest China显示文摘Objective The relationship between outdoor temperature and blood pressure(BP) has been inconclusive. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort study in northwestern China to investigate the effect of outdoor temperature on BP and effect modification by season. Methods A total of 32,710 individuals who participated in both the baseline survey and the first follow-up in 2011–2015 were included in the study. A linear mixed-effect model and generalized additive mixed model(GAMM) were applied to estimate the association between outdoor temperature and BP after adjusting for confounding variables. Results The mean differences in systolic blood pressure(SBP) and diastolic blood pressure(DBP)between summer and winter were 3.5 mm Hg and 2.75 mm Hg, respectively. After adjusting for individual characteristics, meteorological factors and air pollutants, a significant increase in SBP and DBP was observed for lag 06 day and lag 04 day, a 0.28 mm Hg(95% CI: 0.27–0.30) per 1 °C decrease in average temperature for SBP and a 0.16 mm Hg(95% CI: 0.15–0.17) per 1 °C decrease in average temperature for DBP, respectively. The effects of the average temperature on both SBP and DBP were stronger in summer than in other seasons. The effects of the average temperature on BP were also greater if individuals were older, male, overweight or obese, a smoker or drinker, or had cardiovascular diseases(CVDs), hypertension, and diabetes. Conclusions This study demonstrated a significant negative association between outdoor temperature and BP in a high-altitude environment of northwest China. Moreover, BP showed a significant seasonal variation. The association between BP and temperature differed by season and individuals' demographic characteristics(age, gender, BMI), unhealthy behaviors(smoking and alcohol consumption), and chronic disease status(CVDs, hypertension, and diabetes). | ZHENG Shan WANG Min Zhen CHENG Zhi Yuan KANG Feng NIE Yong Hong MI Xiu Ying LI Hai Yan JIN Lan ZHANG Ya Wei BAI Ya Na | 2021 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2021,34,2: | 5
Validity of the Chinese Version of the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) in Gastric Cancer Patients显示文摘Purpose Malnutrition is severe among gastric cancer patients in China. While the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) is a widely used nutritional assessment tool, the validation for Chinese patients with gastric cancer has not been performed yet. The aim of this research is to validate the Chinese version of the PGSGA in Chinese gastric cancer patients by conducting analyses of nutrition screening and assessment data. Methods Two thousand consecutive adult patients with gastric cancer were included in this observational, cross-sectional study in several tertiary hospitals in China. A survey was made among those patients, which included several questionnaires and some anthropometric parameters. We calculated the parameters to validate the use of PG-SGA categorizing the nutritional status of gastric cancer patients. Then we performed statistical analysis to evaluate the internal consistency, external consistency, and construct validity. Results This study verified the ability of the PG-SGA to differentiate gastric cancer patients into different nutritional groups. The confirmatory factor analysis verified the original four-factor structure of the PG-SGA. The internal and external consistency was measured by a concordance analysis which showed an intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) of 0.987. The correlations of the Box 4 score with the Karnofsky performance status score demonstrated alternative form validity with good external consistency (Pearson, r = 0.643, P < 0.001). All three anthropometric dimensions of the PG-SGA were supported by principal component analysis. Spearman correlations (P < 0.001) were significant in the majority of tests. | 19 | Peak wavelength selection guides of chip and phosphors for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes显示文摘The dependences of light efficiency of radiation(LER) and color-rendering index(CRI) of trichromatic white light-emitting diode(wLED), composed of blue LED die, green/yellow, and red phosphors, on the peak wavelength of each primary were investigated by theoretical calculations, at correlative color temperature(CCT) from 2,700 to 6,500 K. The peak wavelength of InGaN based blue LED chip ranges from 450 to 471 nm, while those of Ca3 Sc2 Si3 O12 :Ce3?, b-SiAlON:Eu2?, and Y3 Al5 O12 :Ce3? based green/yellow phosphors range from 511 to 572 nm, and those of Sr2 Si5 N8 :Eu2?and CaAlSiN3 :Eu2?red phosphors range from 620 to 650 nm, which cover almost all the practically used, commercially available wave bands until now. Then, based on the results, selection guides of peak wavelengths for blue LED chip and phosphors to obtain tradeoff LER [280 lm W-1as well as CRI [80 in all CCTs are proposed. The favorable wave bands of each primary are suggested. | Dong-Chuan Chen Zhen Song Zhu-Guang Liu Zhong-Hua Deng Lan Wu Yong-Ge Cao Quan-Lin Liu | 2014 | Rare Metals2014,33,1: | 4
