| 1 | Expenditure and financial burden for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer in China:a hospital.based,multicenter,cross-sectional survey显示文摘Background: The increasing prevalence of colorectal cancer(CRC) in China and the paucity of information about relevant expenditure highlight the necessity of better understanding the financial burden and effect of CRC diagnosis and treatment. We performed a survey to quantify the direct medical and non-medical expenditure as well as the resulting financial burden of CRC patients in China.Methods: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional survey in 37 tertiary hospitals in 13 provinces across China between 2012 and 2014. Each enrolled patient was interviewed using a structured questionnaire. All expenditure data were inflated to the 2014 Chinese Yuan(CNY; 1 CNY = 0.163 USD). We quantified the overall expenditure and financial burden and by subgroup(hospital type, age at diagnosis, sex, education, occupation, insurance type, household income, clinical stage, pathologic type, and therapeutic regimen). We then performed generalized linear modeling to determine the factors associated with overall expenditure.Results: A total of 2356 patients with a mean age of 57.4 years were included, 57.1 % of whom were men; 13.9% of patients had stage I cancer; and the average previous-year household income was 54,525 CNY.The overall average direct expenditure per patient was estimated to be 67,408 CNY, and the expenditures for stage Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ disease were 56,099 CNY, 59,952 CNY, 67,292 CNY, and 82,729 CNY, respectively. Non-medical expenditure accounted for 8.3%of the overall expenditure. The 1-year out-of-pocket expenditure of a newly diagnosed patient was 32,649 CNY, which accounted for 59.9% of their previous-year household income and caused 75.0% of families to suffer an unmanageable financial burden. Univariate analysis showed that financial burden and overall expenditure differed in almost all subgroups(P < 0.05), except for sex. Multivariate analysis showed that patients who were treated in specialized hospitals and those who were diagnosed with adenocarcinoma or diagnosed at a later stage were likely to spend more,whereas those with a lower household income and those who underwent surgery spent less(all P < 0.05).Conclusions: For patients in China, direct expenditure for the diagnosis and treatment of CRC seemed catastrophic,and non-medical expenditure was non-ignorable. | 2 | The influence of temperature on rare earth flotation with naphthyl hydroxamic acid显示文摘The influence of temperature on the complex process of Bayan Obo rare earth(RE) ore flotation with a collector of naphthyl hydroxamic acid(LF8#) was investigated. Industrial test data shows that the grade and recovery of RE increase with the temperature. However, the proportion of bastnaesite in the bulk concentrate increases as the RE grade improves. Adsorption mechanism of LF8# on the surfaces of bastnaesite and monazite were confirmed via zeta potential, UV/Vis Spectrophotometer(UV/Vis), Fourier transform infrared(FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses(XPS). Although the results indicate that the total amount of the LF8# adsorption on the surface of bastnaesite and monazite decreases with increasing the temperature, the amount of stable adsorbed predominance of characteristic bonds(-C(=O)N-) from LF8# uptake on bastnaesite surfaces increases significantly at high temperatures. This conclusion indicates that the adsorption stability increases with increasing the temperature.For monazite, the amount of characteristic elements C and N in LF8# does not increase as the temperature increases on the mineral surface, but the proportion of characteristic bonds increases, which shows that the adsorption stability of LF8# on the surface of monazite also increases, but it is not as significant as bastnaesite, which may be one of the reasons that the floatability of bastnaesite is better than those of monazite. Pulp dispersion results show that the temperature improve the dispersions of both the gangue and RE minerals. This improved the flotation selectivity so that it favored RE minerals. | 4 | Apatinib, a selective VEGFR2 inhibitor, improves the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to tumors by normalizing tumor vessels in LoVo colon cancer xenograft mice显示文摘Tumor vascular normalization has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy for malignant neoplasms, which can also interpret the synergistic effect of anti-angiogenesis agents combined with chemotherapy. Apatinib (Apa), a highly selective VEGFR2 inhibitor, attracts much attentions due to its encouraging anticancer activity, especially in the clinical trials of combined treatment. In this study, we investigated whether Apa could promote vascular normalization in tumor in a certain time window. Mice bearing LoVo colon cancer xenograft were orally administrated Apa (150 mg kg^-1 per day) for 5, 7, 10, or 12 days. Apa significantly inhibited tumor growth and decreased the microvessel density. Using multi-photon microscopy and electron microscopy, we found that Apa improved tumor vessel morphology by pruning distorted vessel branches and decreased the gap between endothelial cells after a 7-day treatment. Furthermore, Apa decreased vessel leakage and in creased pericyte coverage on vascular en dothelial cells, suggesting that tumor vessels were more mature and integrated. The intratumoral distribution of adriamycin (ADR) in Apa group was improved from day 7 to 10 without change in plasma drug concen tration. Tumor blood perfusion was also in creased in this window, and the expression of hypoxia induced factor 1a was downregulated, suggesting the effect of Apa on alleviating tumor hypoxic micro-e nvironme nt. In conclusi on, Apa may improve the effective perfusi on of tumor vessels and in crease the intratumoral distribution of ADR in a certain time window via normalizing tumor vessels. | 6 | Association of Overlapped and Un-overlapped Comorbidities with COVID-19 Severity and Treatment Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study from Nine Provinces in China显示文摘Objective Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear.Methods A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients’ medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI) of the associations between comorbidities(cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19.Results Overall, 158(13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32(2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension(2.87, 1.30–6.32), type 2 diabetes(T2 DM)(3.57, 2.32–5.49),cardiovascular disease(CVD)(3.78, 1.81–7.89), fatty liver disease(7.53, 1.96–28.96), hyperlipidemia(2.15, 1.26–3.67), other lung diseases(6.00, 3.01–11.96), and electrolyte imbalance(10.40, 3.00–26.10)were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2 DM(6.07, 2.89–12.75), CVD(8.47,6.03–11.89), and electrolyte imbalance(19.44, 11.47–32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission(5.46,3.25–9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes(6.58, 1.46–29.64) within two weeks.Conclusion Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. | 7 | Medical expenditure for esophageal cancer in China:a 10-year multicenter retrospective survey(2002-2011)显示文摘Background: Esophageal cancer is associated with substantial disease burden in China, and data on the economic burden are fundamental for setting priorities in cancer interventions. The medical expenditure for the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer in China has not been fully quantified. This study aimed to examine the medical expenditure of Chinese patients with esophageal cancer and the associated trends.Methods: From 2012 to 2014, a hospital-based multicenter retrospective survey was conducted in 37 hospitals in 13 provinces/municipalities across China as a part of the Cancer Screening Program of Urban China. For each esophageal cancer patient diagnosed between 2002 and 2011, clinical information and expense data were extracted by using structured questionnaires. All expense data were reported in Chinese Yuan(CNY; 1 CNY = 0.155 USD) based on the2011 value and inflated using the year-specific health care consumer price index for China.Results: A total of 14,967 esophageal cancer patients were included in the analysis. It was estimated that the overall average expenditure per patient was 38,666 CNY, and an average annual increase of 6.27% was observed from 2002(25,111 CNY) to 2011(46,124 CNY). The average expenditures were 34,460 CNY for stage Ⅰ,39,302 CNY for stage Ⅱ,40,353 CNY for stage Ⅲ, and 37,432 CNY for stage IV diseases(P < 0.01). | 14 | Methyl jasmonate mediates melatonin-induced cold tolerance of grafted watermelon plants显示文摘Root–shoot communication has a critical role in plant adaptation to environmental stress.Grafting is widely applied to enhance the abiotic stress tolerance of many horticultural crop species;however,the signal transduction mechanism involved in this tolerance remains unknown.Here,we show that pumpkin-or figleaf gourd rootstock-enhanced cold tolerance of watermelon shoots is accompanied by increases in the accumulation of melatonin,methyl jasmonate(MeJA),and hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)).Increased melatonin levels in leaves were associated with both increased melatonin in rootstocks and MeJA-induced melatonin biosynthesis in leaves of plants under cold stress.Exogenous melatonin increased the accumulation of MeJA and H_(2)O_(2) and enhanced cold tolerance,while inhibition of melatonin accumulation attenuated rootstock-induced MeJA and H_(2)O_(2) accumulation and cold tolerance.MeJA application induced H_(2)O_(2) accumulation and cold tolerance,but inhibition of JA biosynthesis abolished rootstock-or melatonin-induced H_(2)O_(2) accumulation and cold tolerance.Additionally,inhibition of H_(2)O_(2) production attenuated MeJA-induced tolerance to cold stress.Taken together,our results suggest that melatonin is involved in grafting-induced cold tolerance by inducing the accumulation of MeJA and H_(2)O_(2).MeJA subsequently increases melatonin accumulation,forming a self-amplifying feedback loop that leads to increased H_(2)O_(2) accumulation and cold tolerance.This study reveals a novel regulatory mechanism of rootstock-induced cold tolerance. | Hao Li Yanliang Guo Zhixiang Lan Kai Xu Jingjing Chang Golam Jalal Ahammed Jianxiang Ma Chunhua Wei Xian Zhang | 2021 | Horticulture Research2021,8,1: | 5 |
| 15 | Competitive adsorption of heavy metal ions on peat显示文摘The uptake capacities,and the adsorption kinetics,of copper,Cu(II),nickel,Ni(II),and cadmium,Cd(II),on peat have been studied under static conditions.The results show that the adsorption rates are rapid:equilibrium is reached in twenty minutes. | 16 | Si substituted hydroxyapatite nanorods on Ti for percutaneous implants显示文摘An ideal intraosseous transcutaneous implant should form a tight seal with soft tissue,besides a requirement of osseointegration at the bone-fixed position.Si substituted hydroxyapatite(Si-HA)nanorods releasing Si ion and simulating nanotopography of natural tissue were designed on Ti to enhance fibroblast response in vitro and biosealing with soft tissue in vivo.Si-HA nanorods were fabricated by alkali-heat treatment followed with hydrothermal treatment.The hydrothermal formation mechanism of Si-HA nanorods was explored.The surface characteristic of Si-HA nanorods was compared with pure HA nanorods.Fibroblast behaviors in vitro and skin response in vivo on different surfaces were also evaluated.The obtained results show that the substitution of Si did not significantly alter the phase component,morphology,roughness and wettability of HA,but additional Si and more Ca were released from Si-HA into medium.Comparing to pure HA nanrods and Ti substrate,Si-HA nanrods enhanced cell behaviors including proliferation,fibrotic phenotype and collagen secretion in vitro,and reduced epithelial down growth in vivo.The enhanced cell response and biosealing should be due to the releasing of Ca,Si and nanotopography of Si-HA nanorods.Si-HA nanorods can be a potential coating to accelerate skin integration for percutaneous implants in clinic. | Kai Li Yang Xue Ting Yan Lan Zhang Yong Han | 2020 | Bioactive Materials2020,5,1: | 4 |

| 20 | Transcriptome of Erysiphe necator-infected Vitispseudoreticulata leaves provides insight into grapevineresistance to powdery mildew显示文摘Powdery mildew(PM),which is caused by the pathogen Erysiphe necator(Schw.)Burr.,is the single most damaging disease of cultivated grapes(Vitis vinifera)worldwide.However,little is known about the transcriptional response of grapes to infection with PM.RNA-seq analysis was used for deep sequencing of the leaf transcriptome to study PM resistance in Chinese wild grapes(V.pseudoreticulata Baihe 35-1)to better understand the interaction between host and pathogen.Greater than 100 million(M)90-nt cDNA reads were sequenced from a cDNA library derived from PM-infected leaves.Among the sequences obtained,6541 genes were differentially expressed(DEG)and were annotated with Gene Ontology terms and by pathway enrichment.The significant categories that were identified included the following:defense,salicylic acid(SA)and jasmonic acid(JA)responses;systemic acquired resistance(SAR);hypersensitive response;plant–pathogen interaction;flavonoid biosynthesis;and plant hormone signal transduction.Various putative secretory proteins were identified,indicating potential defense responses to PMinfection.In all,318 putative R-genes and 183 putative secreted proteins were identified,including the defense-related R-genes BAK1,MRH1 and MLO3 and the defense-related secreted proteins GLP and PR5.The expression patterns of 16 genes were further illuminated by RT-qPCR.The present study identified several candidate genes and pathways that may contribute to PM resistance in grapes and illustrated that RNA-seq is a powerful tool for studying gene expression.The RT-qPCR results reveal that effective resistance responses of grapes to PM include enhancement of JA and SAR responses and accumulation of phytoalexins. | Kai Weng Zhi-Qian Li Rui-Qi Liu Lan Wang Yue-Jin Wang Yan Xu | 2014 | Horticulture Research2014,1,1: | 3 |
