Hepatocellular carcinoma review:Current treatment, and evidence-based medicine显示文摘We read with great interest the recent article entitled'Hepatocellular carcinoma review:Current treatment, and evidence-based medicine'by Raza et al,published in World Journal of Gastroenterology.Authors evaluated treatments for early and advanced stage hepatocellular carcinoma based on an extensive review of the relevant literature. They reported that radiofrequency ablation is the most effective local ablative therapy. They concluded that RF ablation is equivalent to surgical resection in well selected patients with early stage hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition,we want to mention microwave ablation besides RF ablation. | Bulent Karaman Bilal Battal Sebahattin Sari Samet Verim | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,47: | 9
Geotechnical investigations and remediation design for failure of tunnel portal section: a case study in northern Turkey显示文摘Mass movements are very common problems in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey due to its climate conditions, geological, and geomorphological characteristics. High slope angle, weathering, dense rainfalls, and anthropogenic impacts are generally reported as the most important triggering factors in the region. Following the portal slope excavations in the entrance section of Cankurtaran tunnel, located in the region, where the highly weathered andesitic tuff crops out, a circular toe failure occurred. The main target of the present study is to investigate the causes and occurrence mechanism of this failure and to determine the feasible remedial measures against it using finite element method(FEM) in four stages. These stages are slope stability analyses for pre-and postexcavation cases, and remediation design assessments for slope and tunnel. The results of the FEM-SSR analyses indicated that the insufficient initial support design and weathering of the andesitic tuffs are the main factors that caused the portal failure. After installing a rock retaining wall with jet grout columns and reinforced slope benching applications, the factor of safety increased from 0.83 to 2.80. In addition toslope stability evaluation, the Rock Mass Rating(RMR), Rock Mass Quality(Q) and New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM) systems were also utilized as empirical methods to characterize the tunnel ground and to determine the tunnel support design. The performance of the suggested empirical support design, induced stress distributions and deformations were analyzed by means of numerical modelling. Finally, it was concluded that the recommended stabilization technique was essential for the dynamic long-term stability and prevents the effects of failure. Additionally, the FEM method gives useful and reasonably reliable results in evaluating the stability of cut slopes and tunnels excavated both in continuous and discontinuous rock masses. | Ayberk KAYA Kadir KARAMAN Fikri BULUT | 2017 | Journal of Mountain Science2017,14,6: | 7
Milestones in the history of diabetes mellitus:The maincontributors显示文摘Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases involving carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism. It is characterized by persistent hyperglycemia which results from defects in insulin secretion, or action or both. Diabetes mellitus has been known since antiquity. Descriptions have been found in the Egyptian papyri, in ancient Indian and Chinese medical literature, as well as, in the work of ancient Greek and Arab physicians. In the 2^(nd) century AD Aretaeus of Cappadocia provided the first accurate description of diabetes, coining the term diabetes, while in 17^(th) century Thomas Willis added the term mellitus to the disease, in an attempt to describe the extremely sweet taste of the urine. The important work of the 19^(th) century French physiologist Claude Bernard, on the glycogenic action of the liver, paved the way for further progress in the study of the disease. In 1889, Oskar Minkowski and Joseph von Mering performed their famous experiment of removing the pancreas from a dog and producing severe and fatal diabetes. In 1921, Frederick Banting and Charles Best extended Minkowski's and Mering's experiment. They isolated insulin from pancreatic islets and administrated to patients suffering from type 1 diabetes, saving thus the lives of millions and inaugurating a new era in diabetes treatment. | Marianna Karamanou Athanase Protogerou Gregory Tsoucalas George Androutsos Effie Poulakou-Rebelakou | 2016 | World Journal of Diabetes2016,7,1: | 6
Material and regenerative properties of an osteon-mimetic cortical bone-like scaffold显示文摘The objective of this work was to fabricate a rigid, resorbable and osteoconductive scaffold by mimicking the hierarchical structure of the cortical bone.Aligned peptide-functionalize nanofiber microsheets were generated with calcium phosphate(CaP)content similar to that of the natural cortical bone.Next, the CaP-rich fibrous microsheets were wrapped around a microneedle to form a laminated microtube mimicking the structure of an osteon. Then,a set of the osteon-mimetic microtubes were assembled around a solid rod and the assembly was annealed to fuse the microtubes and form a shell.Next,an array of circular microholes were drilled on the outer surface of the shell to generate a cortical bone-like scaffold with an interconnected network of Haversian-and Volkmann-like microcanals. The CaP content, porosity and density of the bone-mimetic microsheets were 240 wt%,8%and 1.9 g/ml,respectively,which were close to that of natural cortical bone. The interconnected network of microcanals in the fused microtubes increased permeability of a model protein in the scaffold. The cortical scaffold induced osteogenesis and vasculogenesis in the absence of bone morphogenetic proteins upon seeding with human mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial colony-forming cells. The localized and timed-release of morphogenetic factors significantly increased the extent of osteogenic and vasculogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial colony-forming cells in the cortical scaffold. The cortical bonemimetic nature of the cellular construct provided balanced rigidity, resorption rate, osteoconductivity and nutrient diffusivity to support vascularization and osteogenesis. | Danial Barati Ozan Karaman Seyedsina Moeinzadeh Safaa Kader Esmaiel Jabbari | 2019 | Regenerative Biomaterials2019,6,2: | 5

Intraperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma:A case report显示文摘Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is a variant of liposarcoma with a more aggressive course. Mutations of the p53 gene have been found in different types of soft tissue sarcoma. It is generally accepted that p53 mutations in human malignant tumors are often related to a poor prognosis. In our case, analysis of p53 gene mutation in tumor samples was performed. p53 gene mutation was observed in dedifferentiated tumor tissue samples but not in well-differentiated tumor tissue samples. It has been reported that p53 gene mutation occurs most commonly in the retroperitoneum and rarely in other anatomic locations. Herein we report a case of dedifferentiated liposarcoma located at intraperitoneum. | Ali Karaman Mehmet Esref Kabalar nder zcan Timur Koca Dogan Nasir Binici | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,38: | 3

A comparative assessment of rock mass deformation modulus显示文摘Deformation modulus of a rock mass(E_m) is one of the most important design parameters in construction of rock engineering projects such as underground excavations. However, difficulties are frequently encountered during in-situ tests which are also time-consuming and expensive for determining this parameter.Although E_m is often estimated indirectly from proposed equations by different researchers, many of these equations cannot be used in case of problematic rock conditions(thinly bedded, highly jointed rock masses, etc.) as high quality core samples are required. This study aims to explore more practical and useful equation for E_m estimation using Rock Quality Designation(RQD) and point load index values.Comparisons were made between available empirical equations and the proposed E_m equation in terms of the estimation capacity.Multiple comparison tests(ANOVA) showed that E_m can be reliably estimated using proposed equation especially at the preliminary stages of projects. | Kadir Karaman Ferdi Cihangir Ayhan Kesimal | 2015 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2015,25,5: | 3
Effects of dynamic recrystallization and strain-induced dynamic precipitation on the corrosion behavior of partially recrystallized Mg-9Al-lZn alloys显示文摘The corrosion susceptibility of recrystallized and un-recrystallized grains in equal channel angular pressed(ECAPed)Mg-9Al-lZn(AZ91)alloys immersed in chloride containing media was investigated through immersion testing and an electrochemical microcell technique coupledwith high resolution techniques such as scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy(SKPFM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),andelectron backscatter diffraction(EBSD).During ECAP,dynamic recrystallization(DRX)and strain-induced dynamic precipitation(SIDP)simultaneously occurred, resulting in a bimodal grain structure of original elongated coarse grains and newly formed equiaxed fine grainswith a large volume fraction ofβ-Mg17Al12 precipitates.Corrosion preferentially initiates and propagates in the DRXed grains, owing tothe greater microchemistry difference between theβ-Mg17Al12 precipitates formed at the DRXed grain boundaries and the adjacentα-Mgmatrix,which induces a strong microgalvanic coupling between these phases.Additionally, the weaker basal texture of the DRXed grainsalso makes these grains more susceptible to electrochemical reactions than the highly textured un-DRXed grains. The influence of dynamicrecrystallization and dynamic precipitation was also studied in ECAPed alloys with differenl levels of deformation strain through corrosion andelectrochemical techniques.Increasing the strain level led to a more uniform corrosion with a shallow penetration depth, lower corrosion ratevalues, and higher protective ability of the oxide film.Furthermore, higher levels of strain resulted in greater hardness values of the ECAPedalloys. The superior corrosion resistance and strength of the ECAPed alloys with increasing strain level was attributed to the combination ofsmaller DRXed grain size, higher DRX ratio, and higher volume fraction of uniformly distributed fineβ-Mg17Al12 precipitates.c 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.on behalf of Chongqing University. | Yenny Cubides Dexin Zhao Lucas Nash Digvijay Yadav Kelvin Xie Ibrahim Karaman Homero Castaneda | 2020 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2020,8,4: | 3

Corrosion behavior of Mg-Zn-Zr-RE alloys under physiological environment-Impact on mechanical integrity and biocompatibility显示文摘Benefits of RE addition on Mg alloys strength and corrosion resistance are widely reported but their effects on biodegradability and biocompatibility are still of concern. This paper investigates the effect of RE additions on biodegradability of Mg-Zn alloys under simulated physiological conditions. In this context, two commercial Mg-Zn-Zr-RE alloys, namely ZE41 and EZ33,with same RE addition but different concentrations are studied in Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution(HBSS)at 37℃and with pH of 7.4.Weight-loss,hydrogen evolution,real-time insitu drop test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and potentiodynamic polarization are deployed to study corrosion characteristics. The mechanical integrity of both alloys is assessed by mechanical testing post immersion.Furthermore,in vitro biocompatibility is evaluated by indirect cytotoxicity tests using NIH3T3 cells. Results reveal that although both alloys showed similar microstructure, size and distribution of precipitates played a significant role on its corrosion response.EIS and open circuit potential results show stable film formation on EZ33,while ZE41 showed passive layer formation followed by its deterioration, over the analyzed time period.Using real-time drop test,it was shown in ZE41 alloy that both T-phase and Zr-rich precipitates acted as micro cathodes, resulting in an unstable surface film.In EZ33,Zr-rich regions did not influence corrosion response, resulting in better corrosion resistance that was corroborated by post-immersion surface morphology investigations. The higher degradation observed in ZE41 alloy resulted in higher drop in flexural and tensile strength compared to EZ33 alloy. In addition, cytotoxicity tests on NIH3T3 cells revealed that cell viability of EZ33 increased with increasing incubation time, contrary to ZE41,owing to its lower biodegradation behavior and despite higher concentrations of REs.Present results show that an increase in RE concentration in EZ33,relative to ZE41,had a positive effect on corrosion rate that subsequently controlled alloy mechanical integrity and biocompatibility. | Marwa AbdelGawad Chaudhry A.Usman Vasanth C.Shunmugasamy Ibrahim Karaman Bilal Mansoor | 2022 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2022,10,6: | 2
Double challenge:cochlear implantation in the only hearing ear with progressive hearing loss following meningitis and vestibular dysfunction after implantation显示文摘Objective:Vestibular dysfunction associated with cochlear implantation is rare.It is usually seen in patients with otosclerosis due to spread of electrical activity throughout the demineralized bone.A 17-year old female with progressive hearing loss 2 years after meningitis and vestibular dysfunction in the implanted ear is presented in this study.Findings:The patient had mild hearing loss in the right ear and total hearing loss on the left side because of complete ossification of the cochlea following meningitis. She had to have cochlear implantation in the right ear because of progression of hearing loss. She had successful implantation but she experienced vestibular dysfunction following activation of cochlear electrodes.Closure of two electrodes caused disruption of auditory programming. Then the patient was subjected to long term vestibular rehabilitation program. Conclusion:Timing for implantation before the completion of cochlear ossification is crucial not to miss the chance for hearing restoration. However, difficulties in hearing rehabilitation due to extensive ossification can be doubled by vestibular problems triggered by stimulation of the vestibular nerve by cochlear electrodes.Attempts to reduce the balance problem will complicate auditory programming.Vestibular rehabilitation for long term helps to carry on hearing progress. | Sertac Yetiser Kutlay Karaman | 2020 | Journal of Otology2020,15,2: | 2
Micronucleus analysis in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma and colorectal polyps显示文摘AIM:To determine,by counting micronucleus (MN) frequencies, whether chromosomal or DNA damage have an effect on the pathogenesis of early colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC). METHODS:We analyzed MN frequencies in 21 patients with CRC,24 patients with colon polyps [10 neoplastic polyps (NP) and 14 non-neoplastic polyps (NNP)] and 20 normal controls. RESULTS:MN frequency was significantly increased in CRC patients and in NP patients compared with controls (3.72 ± 1.34,3.58 ± 1.21 vs 1.97 ± 0.81,P < 0.001). However, there was no difference in the MN frequency between CRC patients and NP patients (P > 0.05). Similarly, there was no difference in the MN frequency between NNP patients (2.06 ± 0.85) and controls (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION:Our results suggest increased chromosome/DNA instabilities may be associated with the pathogenesis of early CRC. | Ali Karaman Dogan Nas■r Binici Mehmet E■ref Kabalar Züleyha ■al■ku■u | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,44: | 2

Changes in physicochemical properties of proteins in Kayserian Pastirma made from the M.semimembranosus muscle of cows during traditional processing显示文摘In the current study,we examined the effects of beef processing to produce pastirma on the physicochemical properties of proteins in M.semimembranosus(SEM)muscle.Protein concentrations significantly increased in pastirma muscles(P<0.01),as a result of the salting and curing process. The surface hydrophobicity values of processed samples were higher than those without processing at all guanidine-HCl concentrations, suggesting hydrophobicity increased, which may attribute to the new generated peptides during the traditional pastirma-making process. The metmyoglobin content greatly increased(by as much as 89%)in pastirma samples compared with the unprocessed samples. The images of histology also demonstrate that the pastirma processing had no negative impact on the structure of the muscle. The results from this study suggest that the traditional pastirma-making process catalyzed the enzymatic digestion of muscle proteins, and the differences in some physicochemical parameters between the control and pastirma samples were thus likely to be contributable to protein digestion. Thus, the traditional pastirma-making process results in the degradation of many proteins into peptides, which might then be obtainable as functional components to treat human dietand lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension, hyperglycemia syndromes or to be used as nutraceuticals.©2013 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved. | Abdulatef Mrghni Ahhmed Gen Kaneko Hideki Ushio Tomo Inomata Hasan Yetim Safa Karaman Michio Muguruma Ryoichi Sakata | 2013 | Food Science and Human Wellness2013,2,1: | 2
