3Using Hourly Measurements to Explore the Role of Secondary Inorganic Aerosol in PM_(2.5)during Haze and Fog in Hangzhou, China显示文摘This paper explores the role of the secondary inorganic aerosol(SIA) species ammonium, NH+4, nitrate, NO-3, and sulfate,SO2-4, during haze and fog events using hourly mass concentrations of PM2.5measured at a suburban site in Hangzhou,China. A total of 546 samples were collected between 1 April and 8 May 2012. The samples were analyzed and classified as clear, haze or fog depending on visibility and relative humidity(RH). The contribution of SIA species to PM2.5mass increased to ~50% during haze and fog. The mass contribution of nitrate to PM2.5increased from 11% during clear to 20%during haze episodes. Nitrate mass exceeded sulfate mass during haze, while near equal concentrations were observed during fog episodes. The role of RH on the correlation between concentrations of SIA and visibility was examined, with optimal correlation at 60%–70% RH. The total acidity during clear, haze and fog periods was 42.38, 48.38 and 45.51 nmol m-3,respectively, indicating that sulfate, nitrate and chloride were not neutralized by ammonium during any period. The nitrate to sulfate molar ratio, as a function of the ammonium to sulfate molar ratio, indicated that nitrate formation during fog started at a higher ammonium to sulfate molar ratio compared to clear and haze periods. 6Cyclooxygenase-2 polymorphisms and the risk of esophageal adeno-or squamous cell carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To determine whether-1195 A→G and/or-765 G→C polymorphisms in Cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2 ) may have a risk modifying effect on the development of esophageal carcinoma in a Dutch Caucasian population.METHODS:Two study groups were recruited, 252 patients with esophageal carcinoma and 240 healthy controls, matched for race, age, gender and recruiting area.DNA was isolated from whole blood and used for genotyping.PCR products were digested with restriction enzymes and products were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis.Odds ratios(OR) and 95% confldence intervals(CI) were estimated.RESULTS:The distribution of the-1195 A→G polymorphism was signif icantly different in esophageal cancer patients compared to controls.The-1195 GG genotype resulted in a higher risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma(OR = 3.85, 95% CI:1.45-10.3) compared with the-1195 AA genotype as a reference.The-765 G→C genotype distribution was not different between the two groups.The GG/ GG haplotype was present more often in esophageal adenocarcinoma patients than in controls(OR = 3.45, 95% CI:1.24-9.58;with AG/AG as a reference).The same trends were observed in patients with squamous cell carcinomas, however, the results did not reach statistical signif icance.CONCLUSION:Presence of the COX-2-1195 GG genotype and of the GG/GG haplotype may result in a higher risk of developing esophageal carcinoma.Jón O Kristinsson Paul van Westerveld Rene HM te Morsche Hennie MJ Roelofs T Wobbes Ben JM Witteman Adriaan CITL Tan Martijn GH van Oijen Jan BMJ Jansen Wilbert HM Peters 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,28:11

8Multi-scale phylogenetic structure in coastal dune plant communities across the globe显示文摘Aims Studies integrating phylogenetic history and large-scale community assembly are few,and many questions remain unanswered.Here,we use a global coastal dune plant data set to uncover the important factors in community assembly across scales from the local filtering processes to the global long-term diversification and dispersal dynamics.Coastal dune plant communities occur worldwide under a wide range of climatic and geologic conditions as well as in all biogeographic regions.However,global patterns in the phylogenetic composition of coastal dune plant communities have not previously been studied.Methods The data set comprised vegetation data from 18463 plots in New Zealand,South Africa,South America,North America and Europe.The phylogenetic tree comprised 2241 plant species from 149 families.We calculated phylogenetic clustering(Net Relatedness Index,NRI,and Nearest Taxon Index,NTI)of regional dune floras to estimate the amount of in situ diversification relative to the global dune species pool and evaluated the relative importance of land and climate barriers for these diversification patterns by geographic analyses of phylogenetic similarity.We then tested whether dune plant communities exhibit similar patterns of phylogenetic structure within regions.Finally,we calculated NRI for local communities relative to the regional species pool and tested for an association with functional traits(plant height and seed mass)thought to vary along sea–inland gradients.Important Findings Regional species pools were phylogenetically clustered relative to the global pool,indicating regional diversification.NTI showed stronger clustering than NRI pointing to the importance of especially recent diversifications within regions.The species pools grouped phylogenetically into two clusters on either side of the tropics suggesting greater dispersal rates within hemispheres than between hemispheres.Local NRI plot values confirmed that most communities were also phylogenetically clustered within regions.NRI values decreased with increasing plant height and seed mass,indicating greater phylogenetic clustering in communities with short maximum height and good dispersers prone to wind and tidal disturbance as well as salt spray,consistent with environmental filtering along sea–inland gradients.Height and seed mass both showed significant phylogenetic signal,and NRI tended to correlate negatively with both at the plot level.Low NRI plots tended to represent coastal scrub and forest,whereas high NRI plots tended to represent herb-dominated vegetation.We conclude that regional diversification processes play a role in dune plant community assembly,with convergence in local phylogenetic community structure and local variation in community structure probably reflecting consistent coastal-inland gradients.Our study contributes to a better understanding of the globally distributed dynamic coastal ecosystems and the structuring factors working on dune plant communities across spatial scales and regions.Ane Kirstine Brunbjerg Jeannine Cavender-Bares Wolf L.Eiserhardt Rasmus Ejrnæs Lonnie W.Aarssen Hannah L.Buckley Estelle Forey Florian Jansen Jens Kattge Cynthia Lane Roy A.Lubke Angela T.Moles Ana Laura Monserrat Robert K.Peet Julissa Roncal Louise Wootton Jens-Christian Svenning 2014Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,2:9
9Plasmonics for solid-state lighting: enhanced excitation and directional emission of highly efficient light sources显示文摘Light sources based on reliable and energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are instrumental in the development of solid-statelighting (SSL). Most research efforts in SSL have focused on improving both the intrinsic quantum efficiency (QE) and the stability oflight emitters. For this reason, it is broadly accepted that with the advent of highly efficient (QE close to 1) and stable emitters, thefundamental research phase of SSL is coming to an end. In this study, we demonstrate a very large improvement in SSL emission (above70-fold directional enhancement for p-polarized emission and 60-fold enhancement for unpolarized emission) using nanophotonicstructures. This is attained by coupling emitters with very high QE to collective plasmonic resonances in periodic arrays of aluminumnanoantennas. 10Acute compartment syndrome of the thigh following hip replacement by anterior approach in a patient using oral anticoagulants显示文摘Acute compartment syndrome(ACS) of the thigh following primary total hip arthroplasty(THA) is a highly uncommon complication and has not yet been reported before with regards to the anterior approach through the anterior supine interval. We present a case of a 69-year-old male patient with a history of stroke, who developed ACS of the thigh after elective THA while using therapeutic low molecular weight heparin as bridging for regular oral anticoagulation. ACS pathogenesis, diagnostic tools, treatment and relevant literature are discussed. The patient's ACS was recognized in time and treated by operative decompression with fasciotomy of the anterior compartment. 11Enhanced migration of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase overexpressing hepatoma cells is attributed to gelatinases: Relevance to intracellular signaling pathways显示文摘AIM: To study the effect of gelatinases (especially MMP-9)on migration of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) overexpressing hepatoma cells.METHODS: Wild type HepG2 cells, cells stably transfected with TIMP-1 and TIMP-1 antagonist (MMP-9-H401A, a catalytically inactive matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) which still binds and neutralizes TIMP-1) were incubated in Boyden chambers either with or without Galardin (a synthetic inhibitor of MMP-1, -2, -3, -8, -9) or a specific inhibitor of gelatinases.RESULTS: Compared to wild type HepG2 cells, the cells overexpressing TIMP-1 showed 115% migration (P<0.05)and the cells overexpressing MMP-9-H401A showed 62% migration (P<0.01). Galardin reduced cell migration dose dependently in all cases. The gelatinase inhibitor reduced migration in TIMP-1 overexpressing cells predominantly.Furthermore, we examined intracellular signal transduction pathways of TIMP-1-dependent HepG2 cells. TIMP-1deactivates cell signaling pathways of MMP-2 and MMP-9involving p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase. 13Texture analysis on parametric maps derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in head and neck cancer显示文摘AIM: To investigate the merits of texture analysis on parametric maps derived from pharmacokinetic modeling with dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(DCE-MRI) as imaging biomarkers for the prediction of treatment response in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC). METHODS: In this retrospective study,19 HNSCC patients underwent pre- and intra-treatment DCEMRI scans at a 1.5T MRI scanner. All patients had chemo-radiation treatment. Pharmacokinetic modeling was performed on the acquired DCE-MRI images,generating maps of volume transfer rate(Ktrans) and volume fraction of the extravascular extracellular space(ve). Image texture analysis was then employed on maps of Ktrans and ve,generating two texture measures: Energy(E) and homogeneity.RESULTS: No significant changes were found for the mean and standard deviation for Ktrans and ve between pre- and intra-treatment(P > 0.09). Texture analysis revealed that the imaging biomarker E of ve was significantly higher in intra-treatment scans,relative to pretreatment scans(P < 0.04). 14Role of E3 ubiquitin ligases in lung cancer显示文摘E3 ubiquitin ligases are a large family of proteins that catalyze the ubiquitination of many protein substrates for targeted degradation by the 26S proteasome.Therefore,E3 ubiquitin ligases play an essential role in a variety of biological processes including cell cycle regulation,proliferation and apoptosis.E3 ubiquitin ligases are often found overexpressed in human cancers,including lung cancer,and their deregulation has been shown to contribute to cancer development.However,the lack of specific inhibitors in clinical trials is a major issue in targeting E3 ubiquitin ligases with currently only one E3 ubiquitin ligase inhibitor being tested in the clinical setting.In this review,we focus on E3 ubiquitin ligases that have been found deregulated in lung cancer.Furthermore,we discuss the processes in which they are involved and evaluate them as potential anti-cancer targets.By better understanding the mechanisms by which E3 ubiquitin ligases regulate biological processes and their exact role in carcinogenesis,we can improve the development of specific E3 ubiquitin ligase inhibitors and pave the way for novel treatment strategies for cancer patients.Barbara C Snoek Leonie HAM de Wilt Gerrit Jansen Godefridus J Peters 2013World Journal of Clinical Oncology2013,4,3:5

20Assessment of oxidative stress in chronic pancreatitis patients显示文摘AIM: To assess the levels of antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage in blood of chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients in comparison with those in healthy control sub- jects, by using several different analytical techniques. METHODS: Thirty-five CP patients and 35 healthy con- trol subjects were investigated prospectively with re- spect to plasma levels of thiols, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP, i.e. antioxidant capacity), levels of protein carbonyls and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Additionally, we evaluated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in whole blood. RESULTS: The antioxidative thiols including cysteine, cysteinylglycine and glutathione were significantly lower in CP patients. In addition, the non-enzymatic antioxi- dant capacity was significantly lower in CP patients, which correlated with the amount of oxidative protein (protein carbonyls) and the extent of lipid damage (TBARS), both were significantly higher in CP patients. The ROS production in whole blood after stimulation with phorbol 12-myritate 13-acetaat, demonstrated a strong tendency to produce more ROS in CP patients.
