| 1 | Disaster prevention design criteria for the estuarine cities:New Orleans and Shanghai The lesson from Hurricane Katrina显示文摘The accurate prediction of the typhoon (hurricane) induced extreme sea environments is very important for the coastal structure design in areas influenced by typhoon (hurricane). In 2005 Hurricane Katrina brought a severe catastrophe in New Orleans by combined effects of hurricane induced extreme sea environments and upper flood of the Mississippi River. Like the New Orleans City, Shanghai is located at the estuarine area of the Changjiang River and the combined effect of typhoon induced extreme sea environments, flood peak runoff from the Changjiang River coupled with the spring tide is the dominate factor for disaster prevention design criteria. The Poisson-nested logistic trivariate compound extreme value distribution (PNLTCEVD) is a new type of joint probability model which is proposed by compounding a discrete distribution (typhoon occurring frequency) into a continuous multivariate joint distribution (typhoon induced extreme events). | 4 | Study on the Breakwater Caisson as Oscillating Water Column Facility显示文摘The Oscillating Water Column(OWC) wave energy convertor with the advantage of its simple geometrical construction and excellent stability is widely employed.Recently,perforated breakwaters have been often used as they can effectively reduce the wave reflection from and wave forces acting on the structures.Considering the similarity between the compartment of perforated caisson and the air chamber of OWC wave energy convertor,a new perforated caisson of breakwater is designed in this paper.The ordinary caisson is modified by installing facilities similar to the air chamber of OWC converter,but here they are utilized to dissipate the wave energy inside the caisson.Such an arrangement improves the stability of the caisson and reduces the construction cost by using the compartment of perforated caisson like using an air chamber.This innovation has both academic significance and important engineering value.For a new type of caisson,reliability analysis of the structure is necessary.Linear potential flow theory is applied to calculate the horizontal wave force acting on the caisson.The calculated results are compared with experimental data,showing the feasibility of the method.The Importance Sampling Procedure(ISP) is used to analyse the reliability of this caisson breakwater. | HUANG Yan SHI Hongda LIU Defu LIU Zhen | 2010 | Journal of Ocean University of China2010,9,3: | 4 |
| 5 | Sex disparity of lung cancer risk in non-smokers:a multicenter population-based prospective study based on China National Lung Cancer Screening Program显示文摘Background: Non-smokers account for a large proportion of lung cancer patients, especially in Asia, but the attention paid to them is limited compared with smokers. In non-smokers, males display a risk for lung cancer incidence distinct from the females-even after excluding the influence of smoking;but the knowledge regarding the factors causing the difference is sparse. Based on a large multicenter prospective cancer screening cohort in China, we aimed to elucidate the interpretable sex differences caused by known factors and provide clues for primary and secondary prevention.Methods: Risk factors including demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, family history of cancer, and baseline comorbidity were obtained from 796,283 Chinese non-smoking participants by the baseline risk assessment completed in 2013 to 2018. Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the sex difference in the risk of lung cancer, and the hazard ratios (HRs) that were adjusted for different known factors were calculated and compared to determine the proportion of excess risk and to explain the existing risk factors.Results: With a median follow-up of 4.80 years, 3351 subjects who were diagnosed with lung cancer were selected in the analysis. The lung cancer risk of males was significantly higher than that of females;the HRs in all male non-smokers were 1.29 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-1.38) after adjusting for the age and 1.38 (95% CI: 1.28-1.50) after adjusting for all factors, which suggested that known factors could not explain the sex difference in the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers. Known factors were 7% (|1.29-1.38|/1.29) more harmful in women than in men. For adenocarcinoma, women showed excess risk higher than men, contrary to squamous cell carcinoma;after adjusting for all factors, 47% ([1.30-1.16]/[1.30-1]) and 4% ([7.02-6.75]/[7.02-1])) of the excess risk was explainable in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The main causes of gender differences in lung cancer risk were lifestyle factors, baseline comorbidity, and family history.Conclusions: Significant gender differences in the risk of lung cancer were discovered in China non-smokers. The horizontal load includes the concentrated force load, the moment load M, and the torque load T termed also as combined loading. It is of academic and engineering significance to study the deformation law of submarine seabed due to combined loading. On the basis of the three-dimensional elastic mechanics solution of circular foundation, numerical methods are used to analyze the deformation law of submarine soil under circular foundation with six degrees of freedom. | 11 | Simulation of the Power Take-off System for a Heaving Buoy Wave Energy Converter显示文摘The heaving buoy wave energy device is popular for wave conditions with small wave heights and short periods. This paper presents the design of a wave energy converter composed of a gyro buoy, a hydraulic power take-off, and an electricity generation system. The energy accumulators are used to improve the output power with different control strategies. The quantity relations between each component are established using theoretical methods. The simulation model describes the energy conversion and calculates the operation time, energy capacity, and output power of the device under different initial pressures, release pressures, and electric resistances. As a result, the capacity is determined by the electronic load, and the maximum output power can be obtained when the accumulators are turned on and off at the same time. | 12 | Application of 2D Numerical Model to Unsteady Performance Evaluation of Vertical-Axis Tidal Current Turbine显示文摘Tidal current energy is renewable and sustainable, which is a promising alternative energy resource for the future electricity supply. The straight-bladed vertical-axis turbine is regarded as a useful tool to capture the tidal current energy especially under low-speed conditions. A 2D unsteady numerical model based on Ansys-Fluent 12.0 is established to conduct the numerical simulation, which is validated by the corresponding experimental data. For the unsteady calculations, the SST model, 2×10~5 and 0.01 s are selected as the proper turbulence model, mesh number, and time step, respectively. Detailed contours of the velocity distributions around the rotor blade foils have been provided for a flow field analysis. The tip speed ratio(TSR) determines the azimuth angle of the appearance of the torque peak, which occurs once for a blade in a single revolution. It is also found that simply increasing the incident flow velocity could not improve the turbine performance accordingly. The peaks of the averaged power and torque coefficients appear at TSRs of 2.1 and 1.8, respectively. Furthermore, several shapes of the duct augmentation are proposed to improve the turbine performance by contracting the flow path gradually from the open mouth of the duct to the rotor. The duct augmentation can significantly enhance the power and torque output. Furthermore, the elliptic shape enables the best performance of the turbine. | 13 | Mechanistic Insights into Membrane Protein Clustering Revealed by Visualizing EGFR Secretion显示文摘Most plasmalemmal proteins are organized into clusters to modulate various cellular functions.However,the machineries that regulate protein clustering remain largely unclear.Here,with EGFR as an example,we directly and in detail visualized the entire process of EGFR from synthesis to secretion onto the plasma membrane(PM)using a high-speed,high-resolution spinning-disk confocal microscope.First,colocalization imaging revealed that EGFR secretory vesicles underwent transport from the ER to the Golgi to the PM,eventually forming different distribution forms on the apical and basal membranes;that is,most EGFR formed larger clusters on the apical membrane than the basal membrane.A dynamic tracking image and further siRNA interference experiment confirmed that fusion of secretory vesicles with the plasma membrane led to EGFR clusters,and we showed that EGFR PM clustering may be intimately related to EGFR signaling and cell proliferation.Finally,we found that the size and origin of the secretory vesicles themselves may determine the difference in the distribution patterns of EGFR on the PM.More importantly,we showed that actin influenced the EGFR distribution by controlling the fusion of secretory vesicles with the PM.Collectively,a comprehensive understanding of the EGFR secretion process helps us to unravel the EGFR clustering process and elucidate the key factors determining the differences in the spatial distribution of EGFR PM,highlighting the correlation between EGFR secretion and its PM distribution pattern. | Haijiao Xu Jinrui Zhang Yijia Zhou Guanfang Zhao Mingjun Cai Jing Gao Lina Shao Yan Shi Hongru Li Hongbin Ji Yikai Zhao Hongda Wang | 2023 | Research2023,,1: | 0 |
| 14 | Highly sensitive vector magnetic fiber sensor based on hyperbolic metamaterials显示文摘Hyperbolic metamaterials(HMMs) are novel artificial materials that excite the surface plasmon resonance(SPR) because of their unique hyperbolic dispersion properties. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, we propose the first HMM-based fiber SPR(HMM-SPR) sensor for vector magnetic detection. By selecting the composite materials and structural parameters of the HMM dispersion management, HMM-SPR sensors can achieve a high refractive index sensitivity of 14.43 μm/RIU. Vector magnetic field detection was performed with the HMM-SPR sensor encapsulated with a magnetic fluid. Compared with other ferrofluidbased magnetic field fiber sensors, the proposed sensor shows pronounced advantages in intensity and direction sensitivity of 1.307 nm/Oe and 7.116 nm/°, respectively. | 15 | Theoretical Analysis of Coral Reef Stability in South Sea显示文摘In this paper,we utilize the variational limiting equilibrium(LE) procedure to theoretically determine the slope stability of homogeneous coral sand in the South China Sea.By establishing a reasonable functional and calculating its extremum,we can deduce the stability factor of a coral reef identical to that obtained by upper bound analysis.To determine the accuracy of the results obtained using the variational LE procedure,we present some classical examples of homogeneous sand slopes without a hard shell and compare our results with those obtained by the upper bound theorem of plasticity.A series of extensive calculations and comparisons reveal that the results obtained by our proposed analysis method and those obtained using classical methods are slightly different,but the variational results are believable.On the other hand,our method solves some stability factors for reef slopes covered with a hard shell,which indicates that the existence of a hard reef shell may significantly enhance the stability of a reef slope,and that there is strong nonlinear relationship between reef stability and the mechanical characteristics of the reef shell,such as its thickness and strength.Finally,based on the variational results presented in this paper,we present a useful chart that offers a convenient and straightforward way to determine the maximum stability factor of reef slopes.Taking into account the influence of the hard reef shell,we found that,in some limit equilibrium cases,the limit stability factor and critical height of a coral slope could be improved significantly.Therefore,this issue deserves careful attention in engineering practice. | ZHANG Qiyi SHI Hongda GAO Wei LI Jinfeng | 2018 | Journal of Ocean University of China2018,17,5: | 0 |
