| 3 | Preparation and Control of the Formation of Single Core and Clustered Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications Using a Versatile Amphiphilic Diblock Copolymer显示文摘We report the application of a versatile diblock copolymer,poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane)(PEO-b-PγMPS),to prepare nanocrystals such as iron oxide nanoparticles or quantum dots,with either a single core or multi-core cluster,for biomedical applications.This amphiphilic copolymer comprises both a hydrophilic PEO segment and a hydrophobic segment with a“surface anchoring moiety”(the silane group)which can interact effectively with the hydrophobic nanocrystals through ligand exchange.One of the unique features of this work is that we can control the formation of either single core nanoparticles or multi-core nanoclusters by simply varying the conditions of ligand exchange and aging of the mixture of block copolymer and nanoparticles without needing to change the copolymer.The morphologies of the resulting single core nanoparticles or multi-core nanoclusters were confirmed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy.The clustered nanoparticles exhibit enhanced physicochemical properties that are beyond those expected from a simple accumulation of individual nanoparticles.Additionally,the hybrid nanoparticles containing both magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and optical quantum dots obtained using our strategy provide have combined magnetic and optical functionalities that allow for potential new and expanded biomedical applications,as demonstrated by their use for magnetic resonance imaging and biomarker-targeted cell imaging. | Hongwei Chen Julie Yeh Liya Wang Hafsa Khurshid Nan Peng Andrew YWang Hui Mao | 2010 | Nano Research2010,3,12: | 3 |
| 4 | Update on clinical and research application of fecal biomarkers for gastrointestinal diseases显示文摘Gastrointestinal(GI) diseases comprise a large spectrum of clinical conditions ranging from indigestion to inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs) and carcinomas. Endoscopy is the usual method employed to diagnose these condition. Another noninvasive way to assess and diagnose GI conditions are fecal biomarkers. Fecal biomarkers provide information regarding a specific disease process and are perhaps more acceptable to clinicians and patients alike because of their non-invasivity compared to endoscopy. Aim of this review was to evaluate the current status of the fecal biomarkers in clinical and research for in GI diseases. Multiple types of fecal biomarkers are discussed in this review including; markers to assess IBD, which are released as a results of an inflammatory insults to intestinal epithelia such as antimicrobial peptides(lactoferrin) or inflammation related proteins(calprotectin). While markers related to function of digestion are primarily related to partially digested food or mucosal proteins such as abnormal amount of fecal fat α1-antitrypsin, elastase and secretary IgA. The upcoming fecal biomarker like M2 pyruvate kinase and neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin are discussed as well. Apart from above mention, the fecal biomarkers under exploration for possible clinical use in future are also discussed. | 18 | Effects of Carpobrotus edulis Extract on Oxidative Stress and 158N Oligodendrocyte Death显示文摘Objective Age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, are associated with oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and increase the levels of cholesterol auto-oxidation products such as 7β-hydroxycholesterol(7β-OHC). Thus, it is imperative to identify agents that can prevent 7β-OHC-induced side-effects. Methods We evaluated the potential protective effects of Carpobrotus edulis ethanol-water extract(EWe) on murine oligodendrocytes(158 N) cultured in the absence or presence of 7β-OHC(20 μg/mL, 24 h). The cells were incubated with EWe(20-200 μg/mL) 2 h before 7β-OHC treatment. Mitochondrial activity and cell growth were evaluated with the MTT assay. Photometric methods were used to analyze antioxidant enzyme [catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)] activities and the generation of lipid and protein oxidation products [malondialdehyde(MDA), conjugated diene(CD), and carbonylated proteins(CPs)]. Results Treatment with 7β-OHC induced cell death and oxidative stress(reflected by alteration in CAT and SOD activities). Overproduction of lipid peroxidation products(MDA and CDs) and CPs was also reported. The cytotoxic effects associated with 7β-OHC were attenuated by 160 μg/mL of EWe of C. edulis. Cell death induced by 7β-OHC treatment was ameliorated, GPx and CAT activities were restored to normal, and MDA, CD, and CP levels were reduced following C. edulis extract treatment. | 19 | Fruits and Vegetables Freshness Categorization Using Deep Learning显示文摘The nutritional value of perishable food items,such as fruits and vegetables,depends on their freshness levels.The existing approaches solve a binary class problem by classifying a known fruit\vegetable class into fresh or rotten only.We propose an automated fruits and vegetables categorization approach that first recognizes the class of object in an image and then categorizes that fruit or vegetable into one of the three categories:purefresh,medium-fresh,and rotten.We gathered a dataset comprising of 60K images of 11 fruits and vegetables,each is further divided into three categories of freshness,using hand-held cameras.The recognition and categorization of fruits and vegetables are performed through two deep learning models:Visual Geometry Group(VGG-16)and You Only Look Once(YOLO),and their results are compared.VGG-16 classifies fruits and vegetables and categorizes their freshness,while YOLO also localizes them within the image.Furthermore,we have developed an android based application that takes the image of the fruit or vegetable as input and returns its class label and its freshness degree.A comprehensive experimental evaluation of proposed approach demonstrates that the proposed approach can achieve a high accuracy and F1score on gathered FruitVeg Freshness dataset.The dataset is publicly available for further evaluation by the research community. | Labiba Gillani Fahad Syed Fahad Tahir Usama Rasheed Hafsa Saqib Mehdi Hassan Hani Alquhayz | 2022 | Computers, Materials & Continua2022,,6: | 1 |
| 20 | Chronic hepatitis-C infection in COVID-19 patients is associated with in-hospital mortality显示文摘BACKGROUND There is little evidence about the association of pre-existing hepatitis C infection(HCV)with outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).AIM To assess the prevalence of history of HCV among patients with COVID-19 and to study the relationship of in-hospital mortality in relation with other predictors of poor outcomes in the presence or absence of COVID-19 induced acute liver injury.METHODS In a retrospective single-center study design,1193 patients with COVID-19 infection were studied.Patients were then classified into those with and without a history of HCV,50(4.1%)and 1157(95.9%)respectively.RESULTS Multivariate cox-regression models showed that age,HCV,D-Dimer,and ferritin were the only predictors of in-hospital mortality.Acute liver injury and fibrosis score(Fib-4 score)were not different between both groups.Multivariate coxregression model for liver profile revealed that aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio,Fib-4 score,and HCV were predictors of inhospital mortality.After propensity score matching HCV was the only predictor of mortality in the multivariate cox-regression model.A model including HCV was found to add predictive value to clinical and laboratory parameters.CONCLUSION In patients with COVID-19,history of HCV infection leads to an accentuated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)virulence,irrespective of baseline comorbidities,admission laboratory variables,or COVID-19-induced liver injury,which may be related to extrahepatic effects of HCV leading to enhanced ACE-2/TMPRSS mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 viral entry,baseline cytokine-mediated pro-inflammation,and endothelial dysfunction. | Diana Ronderos Alaa Mabrouk Salem Omar Hafsa Abbas Jasbir Makker Ahmed Baiomi Haozhe Sun Nikhitha Mantri Yongsun Choi Ked Fortuzi Dongmin Shin Harish Patel Sridhar Chilimuri | 2021 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2021,9,29: | 1 |
