| 3 | Shoot and root traits in drought tolerant maize(Zea mays L.) hybrids显示文摘This study aimed to investigate the differences in shoot and root traits, and water use and water use efficiency(WUE) in drought tolerant(DT) maize(Zea mays L.) hybrids under full and deficit irrigated conditions. A two-year greenhouse study was conducted with four hybrids(one conventional hybrid, 33D53AM, two commercial DT hybrids, P1151 AM, N75H, and an experimental hybrid, Exp HB) grown under two water regimes(I_(100) and I_(50), referring to 100 and 50% of evapotranspiration requirements). Under water stress, the hybids P1151 AM, N75, and Exp HB showed more drought tolerance and had either greater shoot dry weight or less dry weight reduction than the conventional hybrid(33 D53 AM). However, these three hybrids responded to water stress using different mechanisms. Compared with the conventional hybrid, the two commercial DT hybrids(P1151 AM and N75H) had a smaller leaf area, shoot dry weight, and root system per plant. As a result, these hybrids used less water but had a higher WUE compared with the conventional hybrid. In contrast, the experimental hybrid(ExpHB) produced more shoot biomass by silking stage at both irrigation levels than all other hybrids, but it had relatively lower WUE. The hybrids demonstrated different drought response mechanisms that may require different irrigation management strategies. | 4 | Variations in Wool Growth with Nutrient Supply in Northern China显示文摘Field studies on essessment of nutritional status of the grazing sheep were carried out in each of the three major grassland regions, the eastern Inner Mongolia and beyond grassland, the Inner Mongolia - Ningxia - Gansu grassland and the Xinjiang grassland, in northern China. The results obtained showed that the wool production of fine wool sheep in these regions varied between regions and seasons, with similar seasonal patterns in all regions and that reducing the seasonal variations in nutrient supply would enhance wool production substantially. | 5 | Demand for hospital emergency departments:a conceptual understanding显示文摘BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) are critical to the management of acute illnessand injury, and the provision of health system access. However, EDs have become increasinglycongested due to increased demand, increased complexity of care and blocked access to ongoingcare (access block). Congestion has clinical and organisational implications. This paper aims todescribe the factors that appear to infl uence demand for ED services, and their interrelationships asthe basis for further research into the role of private hospital EDs.DATA SOURCES: Multiple databases (PubMed, ProQuest, Academic Search Elite and ScienceDirect) and relevant journals were searched using terms related to EDs and emergency health needs.Literature pertaining to emergency department utilisation worldwide was identified, and articlesselected for further examination on the basis of their relevance and signifi cance to ED demand.RESULTS: Factors influencing ED demand can be categorized into those describing thehealth needs of the patients, those predisposing a patient to seeking help, and those relating topolicy factors such as provision of services and insurance status.
