| 1 | Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis显示文摘BACKGROUND:Three types of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis(PFIC)have been identified,but their etiologies include unknown mechanisms. DATA SOURCES:A PubMed search on'progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis'and'PFIC'was performed on the topic,and the relevant articles were reviewed. RESULTS:The etiologies of the three PFIC types still include unknown mechanisms.Especially in PFIC type 1,enterohepatic circulation of bile acid should be considered.Ursodeoxycholic acid,partial external biliary diversion and liver transplantation have been used for the treatment of PFIC patients according to disease course. CONCLUSIONS:Since the etiologies and disease mechanisms of PFIC are still unclear,detailed studies are urgently required. | 2 | Stem cell-based therapy for human diseases显示文摘Recent advancements in stem cell technology open a new door for patients suffering from diseases and disorders that have yet to be treated.Stem cell-based therapy,including human pluripotent stem cells(hPsCs)and multipotent mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),has recently emerged as a key player in regenerative medicine.hPSCs are defined as self-renewable cell types conferring the ability to differentiate into various cellular phenotypes of the human body,including three germ layers.MsCs are multipotent progenitor cells possessing self-renewal ability(limited in vitro)and differentiation potential into mesenchymal lineages,according to the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy(ISCT).This review provides an update on recent clinical applications using either hPSCs or MSCs derived from bone marrow(BM),adipose tissue(AT),or the umbilical cord(UC)for the treatment of human diseases,including neurological disorders,pulmonary dysfunctions,metabolic/endocrine-related diseases,reproductive disorders,skin burns,and cardiovascular conditions.Moreover,we discuss our own clinical trial experiences on targeted therapies using MsCs in a clinical setting,and we propose and discuss the MSC tissue origin concept and how MSC origin may contribute to the role of MSCs in downstream applications,with the ultimate objective of facilitating translational research in regenerative medicine into clinical applications.The mechanisms discussed here support the proposed hypothesis that BM-MSCs are potentially good candidates for brain and spinal cord injury treatment,AT-MSCs are potentially good candidates for reproductive disorder treatment and skin regeneration,and UC-MsCs are potentially good candidates for pulmonary disease and acute respiratory distress svndrometreatment. | Duc M.Hoang Phuong T.Pham Trung Q.Bach Anh T.L.Ngo Quyen T.Nguyen Trang T.K.Phan Giang H.Nguyen Phuong T.T.Le Van T.Hoang Nicholas R.Forsyth Michael Heke Liem Thanh Nguyen | 2022 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2022,7,9: | 7 |
| 3 | Comparative mammalian cell cytotoxicity of wastewater with elevated bromide and iodide after chlorination,chloramination, or ozonation显示文摘Recycling wastewater is becoming more common as communities around the world try to better control their water resources against an increased frequency of either prolonged droughts or intense flooding. For communities in coastal areas, wastewaters may contain elevated levels of bromide(Br^-) and iodide(I^-) from seawater intrusion or high mineral content of source waters. Disinfection of such wastewater is mandatory to prevent the spread of pathogens, however little is known about the toxicity of wastewater after disinfection in the presence of Br^-and I^-. In this study we compared the induction of chronic cytotoxicity in mammalian cells in samples of municipal secondary wastewater effluent amended with elevated levels of Br^-/I^-after disinfection by chlorine, chloramines or ozone to identify which disinfection process generated wastewater with the lowest level of adverse biological response. Chlorination increased mammalian cell cytotoxicity by 5times as compared to non-disinfected controls. Chloramination produced disinfected wastewater that expressed 6.3 times more cytotoxicity than the non-disinfected controls and was 1.3 times more cytotoxic than the chlorinated samples. Ozonation produced wastewater with cytotoxicity comparable to the non-disinfected controls and was at least 4times less cytotoxic than the chlorine disinfected wastewaters. | 4 | Label-free SARS-CoV-2 detection and classification using phase imaging with computational specificity显示文摘Efforts to mitigate the COVID-19 crisis revealed that fast,accurate,and scalable testing is crucial for curbing the current impact and that of future pandemics.We propose an optical method for directly imaging unlabeled viral particles and using deep learning for detection and classification.An ultrasensitive interferometric method was used to image four virus types with nanoscale optical path-length sensitivity.Pairing these data with fluorescence images for ground truth,we trained semantic segmentation models based on U-Net,a particular type of convolutional neural network.The trained network was applied to classify the viruses from the interferometric images only,containing simultaneously SARS-CoV-2,H1N1(influenza-A virus),HAdV(adenovirus),and ZIKV(Zika virus).Remarkably,due to the nanoscale sensitivity in the input data,the neural network was able to identify SARS-CoV-2 vs.the other viruses with 96%accuracy.The inference time for each image is 60 ms,on a common graphic-processing unit.This approach of directly imaging unlabeled viral particles may provide an extremely fast test,of less than a minute per patient.As the imaging instrument operates on regular glass slides,we envision this method as potentially testing on patient breath condensates.The necessary high throughput can be achieved by translating concepts from digital pathology,where a microscope can scan hundreds of slides automatically. | Neha Goswami Yuchen R.He Yu-Heng Deng Chamteut Oh Nahil Sobh Enrique Valera Rashid Bashir Nahed Ismail Hyunjoon Kong Thanh H.Nguyen Catherine Best-Popescu Gabriel Popescu | 2021 | Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,9: | 3 |

| 7 | Trends of Cirrhosis-related Mortality in the USA during the COVID-19 Pandemic显示文摘Immunocompromised status and interrupted routine care may render patients with cirrhosis vulnerable to the coronavi-rus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.A nationwide data-set that includes more than 99%of the decedents in the U.S.between April 2012 and September 2021 was used.Projected age-standardized mortality during the pandemic were esti-mated according to prepandemic mortality rates,stratified by season.Excess deaths were determined by estimating the difference between observed and projected mortality rates.A temporal trend analysis of observed mortality rates was also performed in 0.83 million decedents with cirrhosis between April 2012 and September 2021 was included.Following an increasing trend of cirrhosis-related mortality before the pandemic,with a semiannual percentage change(SAPC)of 0.54%[95%confidence interval(CI):(0.0-1.0%),p=0.036],a precipitous increase with seasonal variation occurred dur-ing the pandemic(SAPC 5.35,95%CI:1.9-8.9,p=0.005).Significantly increased mortality rates were observed in those with alcohol-associated liver disease(ALD),with a SAPC of 8.44(95%CI:4.3-12.8,p=0.001)during the pandemic.All-cause mortality of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease rose stead-ily across the entire study period with a SAPC of 6.79(95%CI:6.3-7.3,p<0.001).The decreasing trend of HCV-related mortality was reversed during the pandemic,while there was no significant change in HBV-related deaths.While there was significant increase in COVID-19-related deaths,more than 55%of the excess deaths were the indirect impact of the pandemic.We observed an alarming increase in cirrhosis-related deaths during the pandemic especially for ALD,with evidence in both direct and indirect impact.Our findings have implications on formulating policies for patients with cirrhosis. | Yee Hui Yeo Xinyuan He Fan Lv Yunyu Zhao Yi Liu Ju Dong Yang Jian Zu Fanpu Ji Mindie H.Nguyen | 2023 | Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology2023,11,3: | 1 |

| 15 | Nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds for lymphedema treatment:current applications and future directions显示文摘Aim:Biosynthetic scaffolds represent cutting-edge therapeutic efforts for secondary lymphedema.In particular,nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds have shown efficacy in both preclinical and clinical contexts,and there has been growing interest in these scaffolds in recent years.This study systematically reviewed the current literature on nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds for lymphedema treatment to synthesize findings and highlight areas for further research.Methods:This was a systematic scoping review of the literature on nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds for lymphedema treatment.Results:Upon review of the literature,32 relevant articles were identified,of which seven articles specifically investigating nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds were selected for inclusion.Of these articles,three investigated scaffold placement in small or large animal models,while four were clinical investigations ranging from case reports to retrospective cohort studies.Across all studies,scaffold implantation was associated with significant improvement in lymphedema symptoms compared to untreated controls,especially when used in combination with physiologic microsurgical procedures such as vascularized lymph node transfer.However,even when used alone or in combination with lymph node fragments,subcutaneous placement of these scaffolds improved lymphedema symptoms.Additionally,in a rodent model of lymphedema,scaffold placement at the time of lymph node harvest forestalled the development of lymphedema,highlighting the preventative capacity of these scaffolds as well.Conclusion:Nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds have been demonstrated to effectively treat and/or prevent secondary lymphedema in both preclinical and clinical investigations.Ultimately,these scaffolds represent a promising intersection of tissue engineering and lymphedema therapy,and further clinical investigation is warranted. | Pooja S.Yesantharao Dung H.Nguyen | 2022 | Plastic and Aesthetic Research2022,9,1: | 0 |

| 17 | A decade of research on patterns and architectures for IoT security显示文摘Security of the Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Systems involving sensors, actuators and distributed control loop is of paramount importance but very difficult to address. Security patterns consist of domain-independent time-proven security knowledge and expertise. How are they useful for developing secure IoT-based smart systems? Are there architectures that support IoT security? We aim to systematically review the research work published on patterns and architectures for IoT security (and privacy). Then, we want to provide an analysis on that research landscape to answer our research questions. We follow the well-known guidelines for conducting systematic literature reviews. From thousands of candidate papers initially found in our search process, we have systematically distinguished and analyzed thirty-six (36) papers that have been peer-reviewed and published around patterns and architectures for IoT security and privacy in the last decade (January 2010–December 2020). Our analysis shows that there is a rise in the number of publications tending to patterns and architectures for IoT security in the last three years. We have not seen any approach of applying systematically architectures and patterns together that can address security (and privacy) concerns not only at the architectural level, but also at the network or IoT devices level. We also explored how the research contributions in the primary studies handle the different issues from the OWASP Internet of Things (IoT) top ten vulnerabilities list. | 20 | Emotion Recognition with Capsule Neural Network显示文摘For human-machine communication to be as effective as human-tohuman communication, research on speech emotion recognition is essential.Among the models and the classifiers used to recognize emotions, neural networks appear to be promising due to the network’s ability to learn and the diversity in configuration. Following the convolutional neural network, a capsuleneural network (CapsNet) with inputs and outputs that are not scalar quantitiesbut vectors allows the network to determine the part-whole relationships thatare specific 6 for an object. This paper performs speech emotion recognition basedon CapsNet. The corpora for speech emotion recognition have been augmented byadding white noise and changing voices. The feature parameters of the recognition system input are mel spectrum images along with the characteristics of thesound source, vocal tract and prosody. For the German emotional corpus EMODB, the average accuracy score for 4 emotions, neutral, boredom, anger and happiness, is 99.69%. For Vietnamese emotional corpus BKEmo, this score is94.23% for 4 emotions, neutral, sadness, anger and happiness.
