| 1 | EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF BEDLOAD TRANSPORT IN UNSTEADY OPEN-CHANNEL FLOW显示文摘Experiments are performed to study bedload transport in both steady uniform and unsteady open-channel flows. Data of Steady uniform flow fit well with the existing formula in the literature. If the formula for sediment transport in a uniform flow is used to predict the bedload transport rate in unsteady flow, the calculated and the measured bedload transport rates are different. For the runs with predominately accelerating flow, the calculated sediment transport rate is smaller than the measured one, while for the runs with predominately decelerating flow, the calculated sediment transport rate is much larger than the measured one. | 2 | EFFECT OF INTERPHASE LIFT FORCE ON THE FLUID FLOW IN AN AIR-STIRRED CYLINDRICAL VESSEL显示文摘In the present paper, based on the two-phase model (Eulerian model), the two dimensional fluid flow liz air-stirred water systems is simulated, and the effect of interphase lift force on the fluid flow is specially discussed. In the Eulerian two-phase model, gas and liquid phase are considered to be two different continuous fluids interacting with each other through the finite inter-phase areas. The exchange between the phases is represented by source terms in conversation equations. Turbulence is assumed to be a property of the liquid phase, k - ε model is used to describe the behavior of the liquid phase. The dispersion of phases due to turbulence is represented by introducing a diffusion term in mass consecrvation equation. The contribution of bubble movement to the turbulent energy and its dissipation rate is taken into accounted by adding extra volumetric source terms to the equations of turbulent enemy and its dissipation rate. The comparison between the mathematical simulation and experiment data indicates that the interphase lift force has a big effect on the flow behavior, and considering both drug force and lift force as interphase forces is important to accurately simulate the gas-water two-phase fluid flow in air-stirred systems. The interphase lift force makes bubbles move away from the centerline, the gas concentration is decreased near the centerline, and increased near the wall. | 4 | LOCAL SCOUR ESTIMATION AT BRIDGE SITE: MODIFICATION AND APPLICATION OF LACEY FORMULA显示文摘In the recent years, it has been established that b/h or h/b (b = length of the structure in the lateral direction and h = approach flow depth) is the dominant factor for the estimation of local scour depth around abutments and piers. One of the major limitations of the Lacey formula is that it predicts only one value of the scour depth for a specific river because of the absence of important parameters b and h. Therefore, its application is quite uncertain for variable b and h. Considering its limitations and experimental facts of flow concentration and shear stress amplification close to above structures, the original Lacey formula is modified introducing the parameters b and h. HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER: A CHALLENGE TO BACTERIAL CLASSIFICATION显示文摘The diversity and classification of microbes has been a long-standing issue.Molecular phylogeny of the prokaryotes based on comparison of the 16S rRNA sequences of the small ribosomal subunit has led to a reasonable tree of life in the late 1970s. How-ever, the availability of more and more complete bacterial genomes has brought about complications instead of refinement of the tree. In particular, it turns out that different choice of genes may tell different history. This might be caused by possible horizontal gene transfer (HGT) among species. There is an urgent need to develop phylogenetic methods that make use of whole genome data. The relationship is shown between the longitudinal changes in sediment load and the directions of vertical river channel deformation, i.e. river incision or sedimentation, which in turn are supported by results of analysis of long-term stage discharge curves. It seems that branching channels are common for the rivers, except where the sediment load is great (such as in the Yellow River). | 11 | PHYSICAL MODELING OF HYDRAULIC DESILTATION IN TAPU RESERVOIR显示文摘A movable bed physical model was constructed to investigate hydraulic desiltation by flushing and lateral erosion in the Tapu reservoir, Taiwan. The model scaling is based on the requirement for dynamic similarity of cohesive sediment deposit initiation in flushing processes. For model scaling, flume experiments investigating the initiation of cohesive sediment deposits were carried out to establish the relationship between critical shear stress of the flow and dry density of the deposit. Experiments in the physical model were then performed to measure the variations of the reservoir water level, the outlet discharge and the outflow sediment discharge. The processes of emptying and flushing were observed and analyzed in the main flushing channel. One of the experiments was conducted to simulate the on-site flushing operations on June 11, 1997. The results showed that the total 0cumulative flushed sediment volume by physical modeling was close to that by numerical simulation.
