6Numerical stress-deformation analysis of cut-off wall in clay-core rockfill dam on thick overburden显示文摘The cut-off wall in a clay-core rockfill dam built on a thick overburden layer is subjected to a large compressive pressure under the action of the loads such as the dead weight of both the dam and the overburden layer, the frictional force induced by the differential settlement between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils, and the water pressure. Thus, reduction of the stress of the cut-off wall has become one of the main problems for consideration in engineering design. In this paper, numerical analysis of a core rockfill dam built on a thick overburden layer was conducted and some factors influencing the stress-strain behaviors of the cut-off wall were investigated. The factors include the improvement of the overburden layer, the modeling approach for interfacial contact between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils, the modulus of the cut-off wall concrete, and the connected pattern between the cut-off wall and the clay core. The result shows that improving the overburden layer,selecting plastic concrete with a low modulus and high strength, and optimizing the connection between the cut-off wall and the clay core of the dam are effective measures of reducing the deformations and compressive stresses of the cut-off wall. 10Limb symmetry index in competitive alpine ski racers:Reference values and injury risk identification according to age-related performance levels显示文摘Purpose: The aims of this study were to assess differences of limb symmetry index(LSI) in strength-and coordination-related tasks between high-level, competitive, noninjured ski racers of different age-related performance levels and to prospectively assess limb differences as a possible risk factor for traumatic and overuse injury in youth ski racers.Methods: The study(Study 1) included 285 high-level competitive ski racers(125 females, 160 males) of 3 age-related performance levels and based on the school system: 95 youth(10à14 years, secondary modern school), 107 adolescent(15à19 years, grammar school), and 83 elite athletes(20à34 years). To investigate the second aim(Study 2), 67 of the 95 youth athletes were included and any traumatic or overuse injuries were prospectively recorded over 2 seasons. All athletes performed 4 unilateral tests(strength related: one-leg counter movement jump(OL-CMJ) and one-leg isometric/isokinetic press strength test(OL-ILS); coordination related: one-leg stability test(OL-ST) and one-leg speedy jump test(OL-SJ)). The LSI was calculated by dividing the dominant leg by the nondominant leg and multiplying by 100. Kruskal-Wallis H tests and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted.Results: There were significant differences between the LSI of the 3 age-related performance-level groups only in the strength-related tests: the OL-CMJ(x2(2, 285) = 9.09; p = 0.01) and the OL-ILS(x2(2, 285) = 14.79; p < 0.01). The LSI for OL-ILS was found to be a significant risk factor for traumatic injury in youth ski racers(Wald = 7.08; p < 0.01). No significant risk factors were found for overuse injuries.Conclusion: Younger athletes display slightly greater LSI values only in the strength-related tests. The cut-off value of limb differences of <10%for return to sport decisions seems to be appropriate for elite athletes, but for youth and adolescent athletes it has to be critically discussed. It seems to be necessary to define thresholds based on specific performance tasks(strength vs. coordination related) rather than on generalizations,and age-related performance levels must be considered. 12Exogenous phosphatidic acid reduces acetaminophen-induced liver injury in mice by activating hepatic interleukin-6 signaling through inter-organ crosstalk显示文摘We previously demonstrated that endogenous phosphatidic acid(PA)promotes liver regeneration after acetaminophen(APAP)hepatotoxicity.Here,we hypothesized that exogenous PA is also beneficial.To test that,we treated mice with a toxic APAP dose at 0 h,followed by PA or vehicle(Veh)posttreatment.We then collected blood and liver at 6,24,and 52 h.Post-treatment with PA 2 h after APAP protected against liver injury at 6 h,and the combination of PA and N-acetyl-L-cysteine(NAC)reduced injury more than NAC alone.Interestingly,PA did not affect canonical mechanisms of APAP toxicity.Instead,transcriptomics revealed that PA activated interleukin-6(IL-6)signaling in the liver.Consistent with that,serum IL-6 and hepatic signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(Stat3)phosphorylation increased in PA-treated mice.Furthermore,PA failed to protect against APAP in IL-6-deficient animals.Interestingly,IL-6 expression increased 18-fold in adipose tissue after PA,indicating that adipose is a source of PA-induced circulating IL-6.Surprisingly,however,exogenous PA did not alter regeneration,despite the importance of endogenous PA in liver repair,possibly due to its short half-life.These data demonstrate that exogenous PA is also beneficial in APAP toxicity and reinforce the protective effects of IL-6 in this model.Melissa M.Clemens Stefanie Kennon-McGill Joel H.Vazquez Owen W.Stephens Erich A.Peterson Donald J.Johann Felicia D.Allard Eric U.Yee Sandra SMcCullough Laura P.James Brian N.Finck Mitchell R.McGill 2021Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,12:5

14Hypoplastic constitutive modeling of wetting deformation of weathered rockfill materials显示文摘The wetting deformation of weathered rockfill materials has been attracting growing attention from both engineers and scientists.The importance of realistic predictions of wetting deformations for high earth and rockfill dams is a strong motivation to establish a suitable constitutive model.Recently,the hypoplastic constitutive model by Gudehus and Bauer was extended by introducing solid hardness depending on the state of weathering.The extended model takes into account the influence of the current density,the effective stress state,the rate of deformation,and the time dependent process of degradation of the solid hardness.In the present paper,the performance of this model is evaluated by comparing numerical simulations with experiments obtained from a water sensitive rockfill material.In particular,triaxial compression paths and creep deformation under deviatoric stress states are considered.Finally,the constitutive model proposed is used to study the influence of a degradation of the solid hardness on the long term behavior of a hypothetical fill dam.Erich BAUER Zhongzhi FU Sihong LIU 2010Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2010,4,1:5
15Damage due to rolling in total knee replacement-The influence of tractive force显示文摘The femoral condyles of a knee prosthesis articulate with a combination of rolling and sliding on the tibial polyethylene plateau.Little is known about potential polyethylene damage due to rolling motion.Since rolling does not exclude the presence of tangential surface loads,this study sought to investigate the influence of tractive rolling on the wear of polyethylene.A“wheel-on-flat”apparatus,consisting of a metal wheel and a polyethylene flat,mimicked contact conditions present in total knee replacement.An increasingly tractive force under conditions of pure rolling was applied.It was found that under rolling kinematics a tangential surface load of up to 17%of the normal load could be transferred through the contact.Surface damage was dependent on the amount of tractive force and appeared more severe with higher forces.In the region of highest tractive force,wear features were identified that resembled perpendicular ridges on surfaces of retrieved tibial polyethylene devices.This suggests that tractive rolling may be a relevant wear mode in total knee replacement.Markus AWIMMER Lars BIRKEN Kay SELLENSCHLOH Erich SCHNEIDER 2013Friction2013,1,2:5

20Influence of pressure and density on the rheological properties of rockfills显示文摘Long-term deformations of rockfill dams can be related to the type of dam,the pre-compaction achieved during the construction of the dam,the history of loading events,the rheological properties of the rockfill material used,the seepage behavior caused by defects of the sealing,the interactions of the dam building with the foundation,and the hydrothermal phenomena of the stressed rockfill material.The present paper investigates the theological propcrtics of coarse grained rockfill materials using a hypoplastic constitutive model.Particular attention is paid to wetting deformation under different deviatoric loading states and pre-compactions.To quantify the state of weathering a so-called“solid hardness”is used in the sense of a continuum description.It is shown that an appropriate modeling of wetting deformations requires a unified description of the interaction at least between the state of weathering,the stress state,the density and the rate of deformation.The results obtained from the numerical simulations are compared with available experimental data for a rockfill material used in Xiaolangdi earth dam.Erich BAUER Zhongzhi FU Sihong LIU 2012Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2012,6,1:4
