| 1 | Globose basal cells for spinal cord regeneration显示文摘Spinal cord injury(SCI) is a devastating condition with loss of motor and sensory functions below the injury level. Cell based therapies are experimented in pre-clinical studies around the world. Neural stem cells are located intra-cranially in subventricular zone and hippocampus which are highly invasive sources. The olfactory epithelium is a neurogenic tissue where neurogenesis takes place throughout the adul life by a population of stem/progenitor cells. Easily accessible olfactory neuroepithelial stem/progenitor cells are an attractive cell source for transplantation in SCI. Globose basal cells(GBCs) were isolated from rat olfactory epithelium, characterized by flow cytometry and immunohistochemically. These cells were further studied for neurosphere formation and neuronal induction. T_(10) laminectomy was done to create drop-weight SCI in rats. On the 9 ^(th )day following SCI, 5 × 10~5 cells were transplanted into injured rat spina cord. The outcome of transplantation was assessed by the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan(BBB) locomotor rating scale, motor evoked potential and histological observation. GBCs expressed neural stem cell markers nestin, SOX2, NCAM and also mesenchymal stem cell markers(CD29, CD54, CD90, CD73, CD105). These cells formed neurosphere, a culture characteristics of NSCs and on induction, differentiated cells expressed neuronal markers βIII tubulin, microtubule-associated protein 2, neuronal nuclei, and neurofilament. GBCs transplanted rats exhibited hindlimb motor recovery as confirmed by BBB score and gastrocnemius muscle electromyography amplitude was increased compared to controls. Green fluorescent protein labelled GBCs survived around the injury epicenter and differentiated into βIII tubulin-immunoreactive neuron-like cells GBCs could be an alternative to NSCs from an accessible source for autologous neurotransplantation after SCI without ethical issues. | Durai Murugan Muniswami Indirani Kanakasabapathy George Tharion | 2017 | Neural Regeneration Research2017,12,11: | 3 |
| 2 | Biodegradation of methanol vapor in a biofilter显示文摘Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a new class of air pollutants posing threat to the environment. Newer technologies are being developed for their control among which biofiltration seem to be most attractive. Biofiltration of methanol vapor from air stream was evaluated in this study. Experimental investigations were conducted on a laboratory scale biofilter, containing mixture of compost and polystyrene inert particles as the filter materials. Mixed consortium of activated sludge was used as an inoculum. The continuous performance of biofilter for methanol removal was monitored for different concentrations and flow rates. The removal efficiencies decreased at higher concentrations and higher gas flow rates. A maximum elimination capacity of 85 g/(m 3·h) was achieved. | 3 | Effect of copper nanoparticles exposure in the physiology of the common carp(Cyprinus carpio):Biochemical,histological and proteomic approaches显示文摘Copper nanoparticles(Cu-NPs)are serious water pollutants but their impact in teleosts performance remains poorly understood.In the present study,we have exposed juvenile carps(Cyprinus carpio),a freshwater teleost edible in India to two different doses(20 and 100 mg/L)of Cu-NPs for seven days.The doses selected were eco-relevant considering the contamination levels of certain water resources.The results indicated that the activity oxidative stress enzymes catalase,superoxide dismutase,and glutathione-S-transferase were significantly increased in the kidney,liver and gills of the treated groups when compared to control.Histological analysis revealed that after exposure,disruption of the secondary lamellae of gills,liver damage with pyknotic nuclei and structural disarray of the kidney occurred.Proteomic analysis of the liver showed down-regulation of several proteins including the ferritin heavy chain,rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor 17-like,cytoglobin-1 and up-regulation of diphosphomevalonate decarboxylase and selenide&water dikinase-1.Taken together,the results of suggest that short-term exposure of juvenile carp to Cu-NPs causes oxidative stress and impart serious deleterious effects in the tissues which may affect fish growth and development. | Yugantak Raj Gupta Durai Sellegounder Monica Kannan Seetharam Deepa Balasubramanian Senthilkumaran Yaraguntappa Basavaraju | 2016 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2016,1,1: | 2 |
