1Assessment of source water contamination by estrogenic disrupting compounds in China显示文摘Detection of estrogenic disrupting compounds(EDCs) in drinking waters around China has led to rising concerns about health risks associated with these compounds.There is,however,a paucity of studies on the occurrence and identification of the main compounds responsible for this pollution in the source waters.To fill this void,we screened estrogenic activities of 23 source water samples from six main river systems in China,using a recombinant two-hybrid yeast assay.All sample extracts induced significant estrogenic activity,with E2 equivalents(EEQ) of raw water ranging from 0.08 to 2.40 ng/L.Additionally,16 samples were selected for chemical analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.The EDCs of most concern,including estrone(E1),17β-estradiol(E2),17α-ethinylestradiol(EE2),estriol(E3),diethylstilbestrol(DES),estradiol valerate(EV),4-t-octylphenol(4-t-OP),4-nonylphenols(4-NP) and bisphenol A(BPA),were determined at concentrations of up to 2.98,1.07,2.67,4.37,2.52,1.96,89.52,280.19 and 710.65 ng/L,respectively.Causality analysis,involving comparison of EEQ values from yeast assay and chemical analysis identified E2,EE2 and 4-NP as the main responsible compounds,accounting for the whole estrogenic activities(39.74% to 96.68%).The proposed approach using both chemical analysis and yeast assay could be used for the identification and evaluation of EDCs in source waters of China.Weiwei Jiang YeYan Mei Ma Donghong Wang Qian Luo Zijian Wang Senthil Kumaran Satyanarayanan 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,2:29
2Contrast-enhanced 3D ultrasound in the radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors显示文摘Liver metastases and hepatocellular carcinomas are two of the most common causes of cancer deaths in the world.Radiofrequency ablation(RFA) is a well recognized,effective and minimally invasive means of treating malignant hepatic tumors.This article describes the use of contrast-enhanced 3D ultrasound(CE-3DUS) in the staging,targeting and follow-up of patients with liver tumors undergoing RFA.In particular,its value in the management of large hepatic lesions will be illustrated.Current limitations of CE-3DUS and future developments in the technique will also be discussed.In summary,CE-3DUS is useful in the RFA of liver tumors with improved detection and display of occult lesions and recurrence,in the assessment of lesional geometry and orientation for a more accurate planning and guidance of multiple RFA needle electrodes in large tumors and in the evaluation of residual or recurrent disease within the immediate and/or subsequent follow-up periods.Edward Leen Senthil Kumar Shahid A Khan Gavin Low Keh Oon Ong Paul Tait Mike Averkiou 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,3:19
3Antioxidant activities of Indigofera cassioides Rottl.Ex.DC.using various in vitro assay models显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant potential of methanolic leaf extract of Indigofera cassioides(MEIC) using various in vilro antioxidant assay systems.Methods:Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity of MEIC was assayed by using different in vitro models like ABTS, DPPH,nitric oxide,superoxide,hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical.Reductive ability of the extract was tested by the complex formation with potassium ferricyanide.Further total phenol and flavonoid contents of the crude extract were also determined.Rutin and ascorbic acid were used as standards.Results:MEIC exhibited potent and concentration dependent free radical scavenging activity in all the tested models.Reductive ability was also found to increase with increase in MEIC concentration.Total phenol and flavonoid content determination showed that the extract is rich in phenols and flavonoids.Conclusions:All the results of the in vitro antioxidant assays reveal potent antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity of the leaves of Indigofera cassioides,equivalent to that of standard ascorbic acid and rutin.This potent antioxidant activity may be attributed to its high phenolic and flavonoid contents.R Senthil Kumar B Rajkapoor P Perumal 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,4:15

5Rotator cuff tears: An evidence based approach显示文摘Lesions of the rotator cuff(RC) are a common occurrence affecting millions of people across all parts of the globe. RC tears are also rampantly prevalent with an agedependent increase in numbers. Other associated factors include a history of trauma, limb dominance, contralateral shoulder, smoking-status, hypercholesterolemia, posture and occupational dispositions. The challenge lies in early diagnosis since a high proportion of patients are asymptomatic. Pain and decreasing shoulder power and function should alert the heedful practitioner in recognizing promptly the onset or aggravation of existing RC tears. Partial-thickness tears(PTT) can be bursalsided or articular-sided tears. Over the course of time, PTT enlarge and propagate into full-thickness tears(FTT) and develop distinct chronic pathological changes due to muscle retraction, fatty infiltration and muscle atrophy. These lead to a reduction in tendon elasticity and viability. Eventually, the glenohumeral joint experiences a series of degenerative alterations- cuff tear arthropathy. To avert this, a vigilant clinician must utilize and corroborate clinical skill and radiological findings to identify tear progression. Modern radio-diagnostic means of ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging provide excellent visualization of structural details and are crucial in determining further course of action for these patients. Physical therapy along with activity modifications, antiinflammatory and analgesic medications form the pillars of nonoperative treatment. Elderly patients with minimal functional demands can be managed conservatively and reassessed at frequent intervals. Regular monitoring helps in isolating patients who require surgical interventions. Early surgery should be considered in younger, active and symptomatic, healthy patients. In addition to being costeffective, this helps in providing a functional shoulder witha stable cuff. An easily reproducible technique of maximal strength and sturdiness should by chosen among the armamentarium of the shoulder surgeon. Grade 1 PTTs do well with debridement while more severe lesions mandate repair either by trans-tendon technique or repair following conversion into FTT. Early repair of repairable FTT can avoid appearance and progression of disability and weakness. The choice of surgery varies from surgeon-to-surgeon with arthroscopy taking the lead in the current scenario. The double-row repairs have an edge over the single-row technique in some patients especially those with massive tears. Stronger, costeffective and improved functional scores can be obtained by the former. Both early and delayed postoperative rehabilitation programmes have led to comparable outcomes. Guarded results may be anticipated in patients in extremes of age, presence of comorbidities and severe tear patters. 6Antihyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of Solanum xanthocarpum leaves(field grown & in vitro raised) extracts on alloxan induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate antidiabetic efficacy of the extract of field grown and in vitro raised leaves of Solanum xanthocarpum(S.xanthocarpum) against alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methods:The antidiabetic activity of the crude methanol extracts of the field grown and in vitro raised leaves of S.xanthocarpum at different concentrations(100-200 mg/kg bw) was tested against alloxan induced diabetic rats.The antidiabetic efficacy was validated through various biochemical parameters and the antioxidant effect was also determined.The phytochemical analyses of field grown S.xanthocarpum and in vitro rasied 5.xanthocarpum leaves were done by estimating their chlorophyll,carotenoids,total sugar,protein,amino acid and minerals contents. Results:The results revealed that the methanol extracts of both the leaves(field grown and in vitro raised) of S.xanthocarpum was efficient anti hyperglycemic agents at a concentration of 200 mg/kg bw and posses potent antioxidant activity.However,the extracts of in vitro rasied S.xanthocarpum raised leaves exhibit higher efficacy than the field grown leaves in all tested concentrations.Proximal composition and mineral analysis of S.xanthocarpum revealed higher concentration of contents in in vitro rasied S.xanthocarpum than field grown S.xanthocarpum. 7Extraordinary evanescent field confinement waveguide sensor for mid-infrared trace gas spectroscopy显示文摘Nanophotonic waveguides are at the core of a great variety of optical sensors.These structures confine light along defined paths on photonic chips and provide light-matter interaction via an evanescent field.However,waveguides still lag behind free-space optics for sensitivity-critical applications such as trace gas detection.Short optical pathlengths,low interaction strengths,and spurious etalon fringes in spectral transmission are among the main reasons why on-chip gas sensing is still in its infancy.In this work,we report on a mid-infrared integrated waveguide sensor that successfully addresses these drawbacks.This sensor operates with a 107%evanescent field confinement factor in air,which not only matches but also outperforms free-space beams in terms of the per-length optical interaction.Furthermore,negligible facet reflections result in a flat spectral background and record-low absorbance noise that can finally compete with free-space spectroscopy.The sensor performance was validated at 2.566μm,which showed a 7 ppm detection limit for acetylene with only a 2 cm long waveguide.Marek Vlk Anurup Datta Sebastián Alberti Henock Demessie Yallew Vinita Mittal Ganapathy Senthil Murugan Jána Jagerská 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,2:9
8Synthesis of Aligned ZnO Nanorod Array on Silicon and Sapphire Substrates by Thermal Evaporation Technique显示文摘High density ZnO nanorods were grown by thermal evaporation of Zn powder at 700?C on Si (100) and sapphire (0001) substrates at atmospheric pressure without adding any catalyst. The nanorods were characterizated in terms of their structural and optical properties. The nanorods grown on Si have a diameter of 350-400 nm and a length of 1.2 μm while those on sapphire have a diameter of 600-800 nm and a length of 2.5 μm. During the structural characterization, it is noticed that the rods grow along the (0002) plane with perfect hexagonal facet. The room temperature photoluminescence spectrum showed a strong UV emission peak at 385 nm with a weak green band emission, which confirms that nanorods have good optical properties. 11Stem cells:An eventual treatment option for heart diseases显示文摘Stem cells are of global excitement for various diseases including heart diseases. It is worth to understand the mechanism or role of stem cells in the treatment of heart failure. Bone marrow derived stem cells are commonly practiced with an aim to improve the function of the heart. The majority of studies have been conducted with acute myocardial infarction and a few has been investigated with the use of stem cells for treating chronic or dilated cardiomyopathy. Heterogeneity in the treated group using stem cells has greatly emerged. Ever increasing demand for any alternative made is of at most priority for cardiomyopathy. Stem cells are of top priority with the current impact that has generated among physicians. However,meticulous selection of proper source is required since redundancy is clearly evident with the present survey. 12In vitro and in vivo anticancer activity of Indigofera cassioides Rottl.Ex. DC.显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antitumor,cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of methanolic leaf extract of Indigofera cassioides(MEIC) against transplantable tumors and human cancer cell lines.Methods:MEIC was investigated for its short term cytotoxicity on EAC and DLA cells by trypan blue dye exclusion method and in vitro cytotoxicity on HeLa,HEp-2,HEpG-2,MCF-7, HT-29,Vero and NIH 3T3 cells by MTT assay.In vivo antitumor activity was studied on EAC and DLA tumor bearing mice.Activity was assessed by monitoring the mean survival time,effect on hematological parameters,antioxidant enzyme levels and solid tumor volume.Results:MEIC exhibit potent in vitro cytotoxicity against all the tested cancer cell lines,but it was found to be safe on normal cells.The extract significantly(P<0.001) increase the mean survival time and also have a protective effect on the hemopoietic system at the tested dose levels(200 and 400 mg/kg). The extract prevented lipid peroxidation and restored the antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase,glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-s-transferase in the liver of tumor control animals.It also significandy(P<0.01) reduce the solid tumor volume.Conclusions:The results strongly support that MEIC shows potent antitumor and cytotoxic effects against EAC,DLA and human cancer cell lines.The extract prevents lipid peroxidation and promotes the enzymatic antioxidant defense system in tumor bearing animals which might be due to activities like scavenging of free radicals by the phytochemicals in MEIC.Raju Senthil Kumar Balasubramanian Rajkapoor Perumal Perumal 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,5:6

14响应面方法在奥氏体不锈钢与铜合金异种材料摩擦焊接头的抗拉强度最大化和界面硬度最小化中的应用(英文)显示文摘在奥氏体不锈钢与铜合金异种材料摩擦焊接过程中,采用响应面方法优化摩擦焊接工艺参数,以获得抗拉强度最大和界面硬度最小的焊接接头。采用三因素、五水平中心复合正交矩阵来确定实验条件。得到20个焊接接头,测定了焊接接头的抗拉强度和界面硬度。采用方差分析(ANOVA)方法来确定起显著作用的、主要的及相互作用的参数,使用回归分析得到经验关系模型。用设计专家软件构造响应图和等高线图来优化摩擦焊接工艺参数。用得到的经验关系模型可以有效地预测焊接接头的抗拉强度和界面硬度,其置信水平达95%。从形成的等高线图可以得到所需的摩擦焊接的最佳条件。G. 18Synthesis,characterization and sintering behavior influencing mechanical,thermal and physical properties of pure cordierite and cordierite-ceria显示文摘The study of cordierite ceramic is the need of the hour in present technological world for various advanced engineering applications.Cordierite,which has relatively poor mechanical properties,has induced the use of various dopants to study the improvement in mechanical properties.Thirst of seeking new materials with good mechanical properties has revived the research on ceria doped cordierite.Present research conducted on pure cordierite and ceria doped cordierite ceramics has investigated the results of characterization and studied their suitability.Pure cordierite and cordierite-ceria(CeO_(2))composite ceramics synthesized for various stoichiometric composition(5-20 wt%)were compacted at 240 MPa and sintered between 600℃and 1350℃for 3 h.The characterization techniques used in this study were X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric(TG)analysis and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR).The density was calculated using the Archimedes principle.Influence of the ceria addition on cordierite’s mechanical properties such as hardness,flexural strength and fracture toughness and on thermal properties as thermal expansion was studied.XRD results confirmed the presence of cordierite and ceria in the samples heat treated at 1350℃.Results of FTIR and TG analyses revealed the formation of cordierite and the effect of ceria addition.The mechanical properties studied were found to be encouraging and confirmed the suitability of cordierite-ceria as an alternate material for cordierite.Marikkannan SENTHIL KUMAR Ayyasamy ELAYA PERUMAL T.R.VIJAYARAM 2015Journal of Advanced Ceramics2015,4,1:3
19Association between 15 known or potential breast cancer susceptibility genes and breast cancer risks in Chinese women显示文摘Objective:There are many hereditary breast cancer patients in China,and multigene panel testing has been a new paradigm of genetic testing for these patients and their relatives.However,the magnitude of breast cancer risks related to multiple breast cancer susceptibility genes are largely unknown in Chinese women.Methods:We screened pathogenic variants in 15 established or potential breast cancer susceptibility genes from 8,067 consecutive Chinese female breast cancer patients and 13,129 Chinese cancer-free female controls.These breast cancer patients were unselected for age at diagnosis or family history.Results:We found that pathogenic variants in TP53[odds ratio(OR):16.9,95%confidence interval(CI):5.2–55.2];BRCA2(OR:10.4,95%CI:7.6–14.2);BRCA1(OR:9.7,95%CI:6.3–14.8);and PALB2(OR:5.2,95%CI:3.0–8.8)were associated with a high risk of breast cancer.ATM,BARD1,CHEK2,and RAD51D were associated with a moderate risk of breast cancer with ORs ranging from 2-fold to 4-fold.In contrast,pathogenic variants of NBN,RAD50,BRIP1,and RAD51C were not associated with increased risk of breast cancer in Chinese women.The pathogenic variants of PTEN,CDH1,and STK11 were very rare,so they had a limited contribution to Chinese breast cancer.Patients with pathogenic variants of TP53,BRCA1,BRCA2,and PALB2 more often had earlyonset breast cancer,bilateral breast cancer,and a family history of breast cancer and/or any cancer.Conclusions:This study provided breast cancer risk assessment data for multiple genes in Chinese women,which is useful for genetic testing and clinical management of Chinese hereditary breast cancer.Fenfen Fu Dongjie Zhang Li Hu Senthil Sundaram Dingge Ying Ying Zhang Shuna Fu Juan Zhang Lu Yao Ye Xu Yuntao Xie 2022Cancer Biology & Medicine2022,19,2:3
20Implications of the presence of an aberrant right hepatic artery in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy显示文摘AIM:To analyze the differences in outcomes and the clinical impact following pancreatoduodenectomy(PD)in patients with and without aberrant right hepatic artery(aRHA).METHODS:All patients undergoing PD between January 2008 and December 2012 were divided into two groups,one with aRHA and the other without.These groups were compared to identify differences in the intraoperative variables,the oncological clearance and the postoperative morbidity,mortality and hospital stay.RESULTS:A total of 225 patients underwent PD,of which 43(19.1%)patients were found to have eitheraccessory or replaced right hepatic arteries(aRHA group).The aRHA was preserved in 79%of the patients.There was no significant difference in the intraoperative blood loss but operative time was prolonged,reflecting the complexity of the procedure[420±44(240-540)min vs 480±45(300-600)min,P<0.05)].There were no differences in the incidence of postoperative complications(pancreatic leak,pancreatic fistula,delayed gastric emptying and mortality)and hospital stay.Oncological clearance in the form of positive resection margins[13(7.1%)vs 3(6.9%)]and lymph node yield were also similar in the two groups.CONCLUSION:An aRHA is found in approximately one fifth of patients undergoing PD.Preservation is technically possible in most patients and can increase the operative complexity but does not negatively affect the safety or oncological outcomes of the procedure.Ashwin Rammohan Ravichandran Palaniappan Anbalagan Pitchaimuthu Kamalakannan Rajendran Senthil Kumar Perumal Kesavan Balaraman Ravi Ramasamy Jeswanth Sathyanesan Manoharan Govindan 2014World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2014,6,1:3
