Predictive value of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio in acute pancreatitis显示文摘BACKGROUND:Serum C-reactive protein(CRP) increases and albumin decreases in patients with inflammation and infection. However, their role in patients with acute pancreatitis is not clear. The present study was to investigate the predictive significance of the CRP/albumin ratio for the prognosis and mortality in acute pancreatitis patients.METHODS:This study was performed retrospectively with 192 acute pancreatitis patients between January 2002 and June 2015.Ranson scores,Atlanta classification and CRP/albumin ratios of the patients were calculated.RESULTS:The CRP/albumin ratio was higher in deceased patients compared to survivors. The CRP/albumin ratio was positively correlated with Ranson score and Atlanta classification in particular and with important prognostic markers such as hospitalization time,CRP and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.In addition to the CRP/albumin ratio, necrotizing pancreatitis type, moderately severe and severe Atlanta classification, and total Ranson score were independent risk factors of mortality. It was found that an increase of 1 unit in the CRP/albumin ratio resulted in an increase of 1.52 times in mortality risk.A prediction value about CRP/albumin ratio >16.28 was found to be a significant marker in predicting mortality with 92.1% sensitivity and 58.0% specificity. It was seen that Ranson and Atlanta classification were higher in patients with CRP/albumin ratio >16.28 compared with those with CRP/albumin ratio ≤16.28.Patients with CRP/albumin ratio >16.28 had a 19.3 times higher chance of death.CONCLUSION:The CRP/albumin ratio is a novel but promising,easy-to-measure,repeatable,non-invasive inflammationbased prognostic score in acute pancreatitis.Mustafa Kaplan Ihsan Ates Muhammed Yener Akpinar Mahmut Yuksel Ufuk Baris Kuzu Sabite Kacar Orhan Coskun Ertugrul Kayacetin 2017Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2017,16,4:53
Inflammatory pathways of importance for management of inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is a group of chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract comprising Crohn’s disease(CD)and ulcerative colitis(UC).Their etiologies are unknown, but they are characterised by an imbalanced production of pro-inflammatory mediators,e.g.,tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α,as well as increased recruitment of leukocytes to the site of inflammation.Advantages in understanding the role of the inflammatory pathways in IBD and an inadequate response to conventional therapy in a large portion of patients, has over the last two decades lead to new therapies which includes the TNF inhibitors(TNFi),designed to target and neutralise the effect of TNF-α.TNFi have shown to be efficient in treating moderate to severe CD and UC.However, convenient alternative therapeutics targeting other immune pathways are needed for patients with IBD refractory to conventional therapy including TNFi.Indeed, several therapeutics are currently under development, and have shown success in clinical trials. These include antibodies targeting and neutralising interleukin-12/23,small pharmacologic Janus kinase inhibitors designed to block intracellular signaling of several pro-inflammatory cytokines, antibodies targeting integrins, and small anti-adhesion molecules that block adhesion between leukocytes and the intestinal vascular endothelium, reducing their infiltration into the inflamed mucosa. In this review we have elucidated the major signaling pathways of clinical importance for IBD therapy and highlighted the new promising therapies available. As stated in this paper several new treatment options are under development for the treatment of CD and UC,however,no drug fits all patients.Hence, optimisations of treatment regimens are warranted for the benefit of the patients either through biomarker establishment or other rationales to maximise the effect of the broad range of mode-of-actions of the present and future drugs in IBD.Jannie Pedersen Mehmet Coskun Christoffer Soendergaard Mohammad Salem Ole Haagen Nielsen 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,1:28
miR-20b, miR-98, miR-125b-1*, and let-7e* as new potential diagnostic biomarkers in ulcerative colitis显示文摘AIM:To use microarray-based miRNA profiling of colonic mucosal biopsies from patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD), and controls in order to identify new potential miRNA biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS:Colonic mucosal pinch biopsies from the descending part were obtained endoscopically from patients with active UC or CD, quiescent UC or CD, as well as healthy controls. Total RNA was isolated and miRNA expression assessed using the miRNA microarray Geniom Biochip miRNA Homo sapiens (Febit GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany). Data analysis was carried out by principal component analysis and projection to latent structure-discriminant analysis using the SIMCA-P+12 software package (Umetrics, Umea, Sweden). The microarray data were subsequently validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) performed on colonic tissue samples from active UC patients (n = 20), patients with quiescent UC (n = 19), and healthy controls (n = 20). The qPCR results were analyzed with Mann-WhitneyU test.In silico prediction analysis were performed to identify potential miRNA target genes and the predicted miRNA targets were then compared with all UC associated susceptibility genes reported in the literature. RESULTS:The colonic mucosal miRNA transcriptome differs significantly between UC and controls, UC and CD, as well as between UC patients with mucosal inflammation and those without. However, no clear differences in the transcriptome of patients with CD and controls were found. The miRNAs with the strongest differential power were identified (miR-20b, miR-99a, miR-203, miR-26b, and miR-98) and found to be upregulated more than a 10-fold in active UC as compared to quiescent UC, CD, and controls. Two miRNAs, miR-125b-1* and let-7e*, were up-regulated more than 5-fold in quiescent UC compared to active UC, CD, and controls. Four of the seven miRNAs (miR-20b, miR-98, miR-125b-1*, and let-7e*) were validated by qPCR and found to be specifically upregulated in patients with UC. Usingin silico analysis we found several predicted pro-inflammatory target genes involved in various pathways, such as mitogen-activated protein kinase and cytokine signaling, which are both key signaling pathways in UC.CONCLUSION:The present study provides the first evidence that miR-20b, miR-98, miR-125b-1*, and let7e* are deregulated in patients with UC. The level of these miRNAs may serve as new potential biomarkers for this chronic disease.Mehmet Coskun Jacob Tveiten Bjerrum Jakob Benedict Seidelin Jesper Thorvald Troelsen JΦrgen Olsen Ole Haagen Nielsen 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,27:19
MicroRNAs in inflammatory bowel disease-pathogenesis,diagnostics and therapeutics显示文摘The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is complex and largely unknown. Until recently, research has focused on the study of protein regulators in inflammation to reveal the cellular and molecular networks in the pathogenesis of IBD. However, in the last few years, new and promising insights have been generated from studies describing an association between an altered expression of a specific class of non-coding RNAs, called microRNAs (miRs or miRNAs) and IBD. The short (approximately 22 nucleotides), endogenous, single-stranded RNAs are evolutionary conserved inanimals and plants, and regulate specific target mRNAs at the post-transcriptional level. MiRNAs are involved in several biological processes, including development, cell differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis. Furthermore, it is estimated that miRNAs may be responsible for regulating the expression of nearly one-third of the genes in the human genome. Thus, miRNA deregulation often results in an impaired cellular function, and a disturbance of downstream gene regulation and signaling cascades, suggesting their implication in disease etiology. Despite the identification of more than 1900 mature human miRNAs, very little is known about their biological functions and functional targets. Recent studies have identified dysregulated miRNAs in tissue samples of IBD patients and have demonstrated similar differences in circulating miRNAs in the serum of IBD patients. Thus, there is great promise that miRNAs will aid in the early diagnosis of IBD, and in the development of personalized therapies. Here, we provide a short review of the current state-of-the-art of miRNAs in IBD pathogenesis, diagnostics and therapeutics.Mehmet Coskun Jacob Tveiten Bjerrum Jakob Benedict Seidelin Ole Haagen Nielsen 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,34:18
Internal biliary fistula due to cholelithiasis:A single-centre experience显示文摘AIM: To discuss about the perioperative problems encountered in patients with internal biliary fistula (IBF) caused by cholelithiasis. METHODS: In our hospital, 4 130 cholecystectomies were carried out for symptomatic cholelithiasis from January 2000 to March 2004 and only 12 patients were diagnosed with IBF. The perioperative data of these 12 IBF patients were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The incidence of IBF due to cholelithiasis was nearly 0.3%. The mean age was 57 years. Most of the patients presented with non-specific complaints. Only two patients were considered to have IBF when gallstone ileus was observed during the investigations. Nine patients underwent emergency laparotomy with a pre-operative diagnosis of acute abdomen. In the remaining three patients, elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy was converted to open surgery after identification of IBF. Ten patients had cholecystoduodenal fistula and two patients had cholecystocholedochal fistula. The mean hospital stay was 13 d. Two wound infections, three bile leakages and three mortalities were observed. CONCLUSION: Cholecystectomy has to be performed in early stage in the patients who were diagnosed as cholelithiasis to prevent the complications like IBF which is seen rarely. Suspicion of IBF should be kept in mind, especially in the case of difficult dissection during cholecystectomy and attention should be paid in order to prevent iatrogenic injuries.Arife Polat Duzgun Mehmet Mahir Ozmen Mehmet Vasfi Ozer Faruk Coskun 2007World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,34:15
Protective effects of intravenous anesthetics on kidney tissue in obstructive jaundice显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the protective effects on kidney tissue of frequently used intravenous anesthetics(ketamine, propofol, thiopental, and fentanyl)in rats with obstructive jaundice.METHODS:There is an increased incidence of postoperative acute renal failure in patients with obstructive jaundice.Thirty-two Wistar-albino rats were randomly divided into four equal groups.Laparatomy was performed on each animal in the four groups and common bile ducts were ligated and severed on day 0.After 7 d,laparotomy was again performed using ketamine, propofol, thiopental,or fentanyl anesthesia whose antioxidative properties are well known in oxidative stress in a rat liver model of obstructive jaundice. After 2 h,the rats were sacrificed.Renal tissue specimens were analyzed for catalase, superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde enzymes activities. All values are expressed as the mean±SD.P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.RESULTS:All animals survived without complications until the end of the study.Enlargement in the bile duct and obstructive jaundice were observed in all rats.Catalase was found to be significantly lower in the fentanyl group than in the ketamine(P=0.039),propofol(P=0.012),and thiopental(P=0.001)groups.Superoxide dismutase activities were similar in all groups(P>0.05).Malondialdehyde was found to be significantly lower in the ketamine group than in the propofol(P=0.028),thiopental(P=0.002)and fentanyl(P=0.005)groups.Malondialdehyde was also lower in the fentanyl group than in the thiopental group(P=0.001).The results showed that obstructive jaundice sensitizes renal tissue to damage under the different anesthetics.CONCLUSION:Among the agents tested, ketamine and propofol generated the least amount of oxidative stres on renal tissues in this rat model of obstructive jaundice created by common bile duct ligation. The importance of free radical injury in renal tissue in obstructive jaundice under different intravenous anesthetics during hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery should be considered for prevention of postoperative acute renal failure.Sinan Hatipoglu Huseyin Yildiz Ertan Bulbuloglu Ismail Coskuner Ergul Belge Kurutas Filiz Hatipoglu Harun Ciralik Mehmet Sait Berhuni 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,12:9

Modeling surface fuels moisture content in Pinus brutia stands显示文摘Fuel moisture content is an important variable for forest fires because it affects fuel ignition and fire behavior. In order to accurately predict fuel ignition potential, fuel moisture content must be assessed by evaluating fire spread, fireline intensity and fuel consumption. Our objective here is to model moisture content of surface fuels in normally stocked Calabrian pine(Pinus brutia Ten.) stands in relation to weather conditions, namely temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed in the Mugla province of Turkey. All surface fuels were categorized according to diameter classes and fuel types. Six fuel categories were defined: these were 0–0.3, 0.3–0.6, and0.6–1 cm diameter classes, and cone, surface litter, and duff. Plastic containers 15 9 20 cm in size with 1 9 1 mm mesh size were used. Samples were taken from 09:00 to19:00 h and weighed every 2 h with 0.01 g precision for10 days in August. At the end of the study, samples were taken to the laboratory, oven-dried at 105 °C for 24 h and weighed to obtain fuel-moisture contents. Weather measurements were taken from a fully automated weather station set up at the study site prior to the study. Correlation and regression analyses were carried out and models were developed to predict fuel moisture contents for desorption and adsorption phase for each fuel type categories. Practical fuel moisture prediction models were developed for dry period. Models were developed that performed well with reasonable accuracy, explaining up to 92 and 95.6%of the variability in fuel-moisture contents for desorption and adsorption phases, respectively. Validation of the models were conducted using an independent data set and known fuel moisture prediction models. The predictive power of the models was satisfactory with mean absolute error values being 1.48 and 1.02 for desorption and adsorption as compared to the 2.05 and 1.60 values for the Van Wagner's hourly litter moisture content prediction model. Results obtained in this study will be invaluable for fire management planning and modeling.Ertugrul Bilgili Kadir Alperen Coskuner Yetkin Usta Merih Goltas 2019Journal of Forestry Research2019,30,2:6
Handheld high-throughput plasmonic biosensor using computational on-chip imaging显示文摘We demonstrate a handheld on-chip biosensing technology that employs plasmonic microarrays coupled with a lens-free computational imaging system towards multiplexed and high-throughput screening of biomolecular interactions for point-of-care applications and resource-limited settings. This lightweight and field-portable biosensing device, weighing 60 g and 7.5 cm tall, utilizes a compact optoelectronic sensor array to record the diffraction patterns of plasmonic nanostructures under uniform illumination by a single-light emitting diode tuned to the plasmonic mode of the nanoapertures.Employing a sensitive plasmonic array design that is combined with lens-free computational imaging,we demonstrate label-free and quantitative detection of biomolecules with a protein layer thickness down to 3 nm.Integrating large-scale plasmonic microarrays, our on-chip imaging platform enables simultaneous detection of protein mono-and bilayers on the same platform over a wide range of biomolecule concentrations. In this handheld device,we also employ an iterative phase retrieval-based image reconstruction method, which offers the ability to digitally image a highly multiplexed array of sensors on the same plasmonic chip, making this approach especially suitable for high-throughput diagnostic applications in field settings.Arif E Cetin Ahmet F Coskun Betty C Galarreta Min Huang David Herman Aydogan Ozcan Hatice Altug 2014Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1:6
Expression of Notch pathway components (Numb, Itch, and Siah-1) in colorectal tumors: A clinicopathological study显示文摘BACKGROUND The role of the Notch pathway in carcinogenesis and tumor progression has been demonstrated in many organs, including the colon.Accordingly, studies aimed at developing therapies targeting this pathway in various cancers require the identification of several factors that may play a role in regulating Notch-1 expression.Although Numb,Itch, and seven in absentia homolog-1(Siah-1)have been shown to contribute to the regulation of Notch signaling, their role in colorectal carcinogenesis and tumor progression has not been fully elucidated to date.AIM To evaluate Numb,Itch, and Siah-1 expression in colorectal tumors to clarify their relationship with Notch-1 expression and their role in carcinogenesis and tumor behavior.METHODS Expression of Notch-1,Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 was investigated in 50 colorectal carcinomas,30 adenomas, and 20 healthy colonic tissues by immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR)analyses.RESULTS In contrast to Notch-1,which is expressed at higher levels in tumor tissues and adenomas, expression of Numb,Itch, and Siah-1 was stronger and more frequent in normal mucosa(P<0.01).There was a positive correlation between Notch-1 expression and high histological grade, the presence of lymph node metastasis, and advanced-stage tumors, whereas expression of Numb,Itch, and Siah-1 was absent or reduced in tumors with these clinicopathological parameters(P<0.05).In survival analysis, expression of Notch was related to poor prognosis but that of Numb,Itch, and Siah-1 correlated with improved survival(P<0.05).Multivariate analysis revealed Notch-1 expression and loss of Numb expression to be independent prognostic parameters together with lymph node metastasis(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Our findings support the role of Notch-1 in colorectal carcinoma and indicate that loss of Numb,Itch, and Siah-1 expression is associated with carcinogenesis. Our data also suggest that these three proteins might be involved in the Notch-1 pathway during colorectal carcinoma(CRC)progression and might play an essential role in approaches targeting Notch as novel molecular therapies for CRC.Sinem Cil Gonulcu Betul Unal Ibrahim Cumhur Bassorgun Mualla Ozcan Hasan Senol Coskun Gulsum Ozlem Elpek 2020World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,26:5
Biliary fistula after treatment for hydatid disease of the liver:When to intervene显示文摘AIM:To determine the outcome of patients with biliary fistula(BF)after treatment for hydatid disease of the liver. METHODS:Between January 2000 and December 2010,out of 301 patients with a diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the liver,282 patients who underwent treatment [either surgery or puncture, aspiration, injection and reaspiration(PAIR)procedure]were analysed.Patients were grouped according to the presence or absence of postoperative biliary fistula(PBF)(PBF vs no-PBF groups, respectively).Preoperative clinical, radiological and laboratory characteristics, operative characteristics including type of surgery, peroperative detection of BF,postoperative drain output, morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stays of patients were compared amongst groups.Multivariate analysis was performed to detect factors predictive of PBF.Receiver operative characteristics(ROC)curve analysis were used to determine ideal cutoff values for those variables found to be significant.A comparison was also made between patients whose fistula closed spontaneously(CS)and those with intervention in order to find predictive fac-tors associated with spontaneous closure. RESULTS:Among 282 patients[median(range)age, 23(16-78)years;77.0%male];210(74.5%)were treated with conservative surgery,33(11.7%)radical surgery and 39(13.8%)underwent percutaneous drainage with PAIR procedure A PBF developed in 46(16.3%) patients, all within 5 d after operation. The maximum cyst diameter and preoperative alkaline phosphatase levels(U/L)were significantly higher in the PBF group than in the no-PBF group[10.5±3.7 U/L vs 8.4±3.5 U/L(P<0.001)and 40.0±235.1 U/Lvs 190.0±167.3 U/L(P=0.02),respectively].Hospitalization time was also significantly longer in the PBF group than in the no-PBF group[37.4±18.0 d vs 22.4±17.9 d(P< 0.001)].A preoperative high alanine aminotransferase level(>40 U/L)and a peroperative attempt for fistula closure were significant predictors of PBF development (P=0.02,95%CI:-0.03-0.5 and P=0.001,95%CI:0.1-0.4),respectively.Comparison of patients whose PBF CS or with biliary intervention(BI)revealed that the mean diameter of the cyst was not significantly different between CS and BI groups however maximum drain output was significantly higher in the BI group(81.6± 118.1 cm vs 423.9±298.4 cm,P<0.001).Time for fistula closure was significantly higher in the BI group(10.1 ±3.7 d vs 30.7±15.1 d,P<0.001).The ROC curve analysis revealed cut-off values of a maximum bilious drainage<102 mL and a waiting period of 5.5 postoperative days for spontaneous closure with the sensitivity and specificity values of(83.3%-91.1%,AUC:0.90)and (97%-91%,AUC:0.95),respectively.The multivariate analysis demonstrated a PBF drainage volume<102 mL to be the only statistically significant predictor of spontaneous closure(P<0.001,95%CI:0.5-1.0). CONCLUSION:Patients with PBF after hydatid surgery often have complicated postoperative course with serious morbidity.Patients who develop PBF with an output <102 mL might be managed expectantly.Nazif Zeybek Hakan Dede Deniz Balci Ali Kagan Coskun Ismail Hakki Ozerhan Subutay Peker Yusuf Peker 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,3:5
A predictive score for retinopathy of prematurity by using clinical risk factors and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 levels显示文摘AIM: To detect the impact of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and other risk factors for the early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) and to establish a scoring system for ROP prediction by using clinical criteria and serum IGF-1 levels.METHODS: The study was conducted with 127 preterm infants. IGF-1 levels in the 1 st day of life, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th week of life was analyzed. The score was established after logistic regression analysis, considering the impact of each variable on the occurrences of any stage ROP. A validation cohort containing 107 preterm infants was included in the study and the predictive ability of ROP score was calculated.RESULTS: Birth weights(BW), gestational weeks(GW) and the prevalence of breast milk consumption were lower, respiratory distress syndrome(RDS), bronchopulmonarydysplasia(BPD) and necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC) were more frequent, the duration of mechanical ventilation and oxygen supplementation was longer in patients with ROP(P<0.05). Initial serum IGF-1 levels tended to be lower in newborns who developed ROP. Logistic regression analysis revealed that low BW(<1250 g), presence of intraventricular hemorrhage(IVH) and formula feeding increased the risk of ROP. Afterwards, the scoring system was validated on 107 infants. The negative predictive values of a score less than 4 were 84.3%, 74.7% and 79.8% while positive predictive values were 76.3%, 65.5% and 71.6% respectively.CONCLUSION: In addition to BW <1250 g and IVH, formula consumption was detected as a risk factor for the development of ROP. Breastfeeding is important for prevention of ROP in preterm infants.Yesim Coskun Ceyhun Dalkan Ozge Yabas Ozlem Onay Demirel Elif Samiye Bayar Sibel Sakarya Tuba Muftuoglu Dilaver Ersanli Nerin Bahceciler ipek Akman 2017International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,11:4
Neuroprotective effects of daidzein on focal cerebral ischemia injury in rats显示文摘Daidzein, a plant extract, has antioxidant activity. It is hypothesized, in this study, that daidzein exhibits neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemia. Rat models of middle cerebral artery occlusion were intraperitoneally administered daidzein. Biochemical and immunohistochemical tests showed that superoxide dismutase and nuclear respiratory factor 1 expression levels in the brain tissue decreased after ischemia and they increased obviously after daidzein administration; malondialdehyde level and apoptosis-related cysteine peptidase caspase-3 and caspase-9 immunoreactivity in the brain tissue increased after ischemia and they decreased obviously after daidzein administration. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and luxol fast blue staining results showed that intraperitoneal administration of daidzein markedly alleviated neuronal damage in the ischemic brain tissue. These findings suggest that daidzein exhibits neuroprotective effects on ischemic brain tissue by decreasing oxygen free radical production, which validates the aforementioned hypothesis.Adem Bozkurt Aras Mustafa Guven Tar?k Akman Adile Ozkan Halil Murat Sen Ugur Duz Y?ld?ray Kalkan Coskun Silan Murat Cosar 2015Neural Regeneration Research2015,10,1:4

Hepatitis B reactivation related to everolimus显示文摘Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) during chemotherapy is a well known complication in patients with chronic hepatitis B and cancer. The clinical manifestations range from subclinical elevation of liver enzymes to severe, potentially fatal fulminant hepatitis.Reactivation can occur in a patient with previous inactive HBV infection;either an inactive carrier or a patient with resolved hepatitis.Everolimus is a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor approved in renal cell carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumours and breast cancer.mTOR inhibitors are a new generation of drugs for targeted treatment;therefore, little about their side effects is known. Here,we report a patient with renal cell carcinoma who experienced a flare of hepatitis B infection during treatment with everolimus.Clinicians should be aware of HBV reactivation in patients who are undergoing treatment with everolimus, and screening for hepatitis B infection and prophylactic antiviral treatment should be considered.Sema Sezgin Gksu Serife Bilal Hasan Senol Coskun 2013World Journal of Hepatology2013,5,1:3

Blastocystis in ulcerative colitis patients:Genetic diversity and analysis of laboratory findings显示文摘Objective:To determine Blastocystis frequency and subtypes(ST) in ulcerative colitis(UC) patients and analyse some laboratory findings between Blastocystis positive and negative cases. Methods:Faecal samples from 150 UC patients in Adnan Menderes University,Training and Research Hospital were examined by direct microscopy and cultivated in Jones medium.Blastocystis positive cultures were subjected to DNA isolation and subtypes were identified by sequencing of barcode region.A retrospective analysis was conducted on C reactive protein(CRP),leukocyte counts(WBC),neutrophil counts, and sedimentation rates. Results:The overall positive rate of Blastocystis was 8%(12 patients) and the most abundant subtype was ST3(eight isolates,66.7%),followed by ST1,ST2 and ST7.Laboratory findings between Blastocystis infected and non-infected UC patients were not significantly different.Blastocystisfrequency was 3.8% among the patients in active stage, while it was 11.8% among the patients in remission stage. Conclusions:The present study confirms previous findings that have indicated the predominance of Blastocystis ST3 in humans and contributes additional evidence that suggests the low colonization of Blastocystis infection in ulcerative colitis patients during active stage.Adil Coskun Erdogan Malatyali Hatice Ertabaklar Mustafa B Yasar Ali O Karaoglu Sema Ertug 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,9:3
Effect of growth hormone on small intestinal homeostasis relation to cellular mediators IGF-I and IGFBP-3显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the effects of growth hormone(GH) on the histology of small intestines which might be related to the role of insulin like growth factor(IGF)-I, IGF-binding protein 3(IGFBP-3)and its receptors. METHODS:Twelve week-old adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups. The study group(n =10),received recombinant human growth hormone (rGH)at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day subcutaneously for 14 d and the control group(n=10)received physiologic serum.Paraffin sections of jejunum were stained with periodic acid shift(PAS)and hematoxylin and eosin(HE) for light microscopy. They were also examined for IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and IGF-receptor immunoreactivities.Staining intensity was graded semi-quantitatively using the HS- CORE. RESULTS:Goblet cells and the cells in crypt epitheliawere significantly increased in the study group compared to that of the control group. We have demonstrated an increase of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 immunoreactivities in surface epithelium of the small intestine by GH application.IGF-I receptor immunoreactivities of crypt, villous columnar cells, enteroendocrine cells and muscularis mucosae were also more strongly positive in the study group compared to those of in the control group. CONCLUSION:These findings confirm the important trophic and protective role of GH in the homeostasis of the small intestine. The trophic effect is mediated by an increase in IGF-I synthesis in the small intestine, but the protective effect is not related to IGF-I.Betul Ersoy Kemal Ozbilgin Erhun Kasirga Sevinc Inan Senol Coskun Ibrahim Tuglu 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,43:2
Can fruit seeds and undigested plant residuals cause acute appendicitis显示文摘Objective:To investigate the relation between fruit seeds, plants residuals and appendicitis. Methods:Among cases that underwent appendectomy, the appendicitis cases having fruit seeds and undigested plant residuals in their etiology were examined retrospectively. Also, histopathological features, age, sex, and parameters of morbidity and mortality were used. Results:Fruit seed was found in one case(0.05%) with presence of pus in appendix lumen, undigested plant residuals in 7 cases(0.35%).It was determined that there were appendix inflammation in 2 of the plant residuals cases, while there were obstruction and lymphoid hyperplasia in the appendix lumen of 5 cases. No mortality was observed. Conclusions:The ratio of acute appendicitis caused by plants is minimal among all appendectomised patients, but avoidence of eating undigested fruit seeds and chewing plants well may help to prevent appendicitis.Omer Engin Mehmet Yildirim Savas Yakan Gulnihal Ay Coskun 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,2:2
