| 1 | Protection of bridge piers against scouring with tetrahedral frames显示文摘Armoring countermeasures, such as riprap stones, are the primary method used to protect bridge piers against scouring; however, these methods have not had definitive success. Recently, flow-altering countermeasures, such as sacrificial piles, have been tested as an alternative to armoring countermeasures. This study investigated the mechanics of an innovative flow-altering countermeasure device, frames in the shape of tetrahedrons that act as a pier-scour countermeasure. Results of measured characteristics for turbulence flow showed that the flow around the tetrahedral frames can be divided into three regions: (1) a deceleration region near the sediment bed; (2) an acceleration region in the middle of water depth region; and (3) a restoration region near the water surface. The velocity magnitudes, turbulent intensities and vorticities decreased in the deceleration region, increased in the acceleration region and reverted to that of the unprotected condition in the restoration region. This pier-scour countermeasure is innovative because of its ability to dissipate energy associated with the downflow and the horseshoes vortex generated around the bridge pier. The scour tests revealed that the frames protected the foundation of bridge piers against scour. The experimental results showed that the percentage reduction of scour depth decreased as the velocity ratio, U/U c , decreased, reaching a value of 50% for the range of parameters tested in this study. Moreover, its efficiency was dependent on the placement density of the frames. The data showed that the frames were more effective when η was larger. | 2 | Environmental application of three-dimensional graphene materials as adsorbents for dyes and heavy metals: Review on ice-templating method and adsorption mechanisms显示文摘The remediation of wastewater requires treatment technologies which are robust, efficient,simple to operate and affordable such as adsorption. Lately, three-dimensional(3D)graphene based materials have attracted significant attention as effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment. The intrinsic properties of 3D graphene structure such as large surface area and interconnected porous structure can facilitate the transport of pollutants into the 3D network and provide abundant active sites for trapping the pollutants. For the synthesis of 3D graphene structure, ice-templating is commonly practiced due to its facile steps, cost effectiveness and high scalability potential. This review covers the icetemplating fabrication technique for 3D graphene based materials and their application as adsorbents in eliminating dyes and heavy metals from aqueous media. The assembly mechanisms of the ice-templating fsynthesis are comprehensively discussed. Further discussion on the fundamental principles, critical process parameters and characteristics of ice-templated 3D graphene structures is also included. A thorough review on the mechanisms for batch adsorption of dyes and heavy metals is presented based on the structures and properties of the 3D graphene materials. | 3 | Characterization of horseshoe vortex in a developing scour hole at a cylindrical bridge pier显示文摘Since local scour at bridge piers in rivers and estuaries is a major cause of bridge failure, estimation of the maximum local scour depth is of great importance to hydraulic and coastal engineers. Although numerous studies that focus on scour-depth prediction have been done and published, understanding of the flow and turbulence characteristics of the horseshoe vortex that drives the scour mechanism in a developing scour hole still is immature. This study aims to quantify the detailed turbulent flow field in a developing clear-water scour hole at a circular pier using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The distributions of velocity fields, turbulence intensities, and Reynolds shear stresses of the horseshoe vortex that form in front of the pier at different scour stages (t=0, 0.5, 1, 12, 24, and 48 h) are presented in this paper. During scour development, the horseshoe vortex system was found to evolve from one initially small vortex to three vortices. The strength and size of the main vortex are found to increase with increasing scour depth. The regions of both the maximum turbulence intensity and Reynolds shear stress are found to form at a location upstream of the main vortex, where the large turbulent eddies have the highest possibility of occurrence. | 7 | EDA: an enhanced dual-active algorithm for location privacy preservation in mobile P2P networks显示文摘Various solutions have been proposed to enable mobile users to access location-based services while preserving their location privacy. Some of these solutions are based on a centralized architecture with the participation of a trustworthy third party, whereas some other approaches are based on a mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture. The former approaches suffer from the scalability problem when networks grow large, while the latter have to endure either low anonymization success rates or high communication overheads. To address these issues, this paper deals with an enhanced dual-active spatial cloaking algorithm (EDA) for preserving location privacy in mobile P2P networks. The proposed EDA allows mobile users to collect and actively disseminate their location information to other users. Moreover, to deal with the challenging characteristics of mobile P2P networks, e.g., constrained network resources and user mobility, EDA enables users (1) to perform a negotiation process to minimize the number of duplicate locations to be shared so as to significantly reduce the communication overhead among users, (2) to predict user locations based on the latest available information so as to eliminate the inaccuracy problem introduced by using some out-of-date locations, and (3) to use a latest-record-highest-priority (LRHP) strategy to reduce the probability of broadcasting fewer useful locations. Extensive simulations are conducted for a range of P2P network scenarios to evaluate the performance of EDA in comparison with the existing solutions. | 10 | Associations of AT(N) biomarkers with neuropsychiatric symptoms in prechnical Alzheimer’s disease and cognitively unimpaired individuals显示文摘The development of in vivo biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease(AD)has advanced the diagnosis of AD from a clinical syndrome to a biological construct.The preclinical stage of AD continuum is defined by the identification of AD biomarkers crossing the pathological threshold in cognitively unimpaired individuals.While neuropsychiatric symptoms(NPS)are non-cognitive symptoms that are increasingly recognized as early manifestations of AD,the associations of NPS with AD pathophysiology in preclinical AD remain unclear.Here,we review the associations between NPS and AD biomarkers amyloid-(3(Aβ),tau and neurodegeneration in preclinical AD and cognitivelyunimpaired individuals in 19 eligible English-language publications(8 cross-sectional studies,10 longitudinal,1 both cross-sectional and longitudinal).The cross-sectional studies have consistently shown that NPS,particularly depressive and anxiety symptoms,are associated with higher Aβ.The longitudinal studies have suggested that greater NPS are associated with higher Aβ and cognitive decline in cognitively unimpaired subjects over time.However,most of the studies have either cross-sectionally or longitudinally shown no association between NPS and tau pathology.For the association of NPS and neurodegeneration,two studies have shown that the cerebrospinal fluid total-tau is linked to longitudinal increase in NPS and that the NPS may predict longitudinal metabolic decline in preclinical AD,respectively.However,evidence for the association between atrophy and NPS in preclinical AD is less consistent.Therefore,future longitudinal studies with well-designed methodologies and NPS measurements are required not only to determine the relationship among AT(N)biomarkers,NPS and cognitive decline,but also to elucidate the contribution of comorbid pathology to preclinical AD. | Kok Pin Ng Hui Chiew Pedro Rosa-Neto Nagaendran Kandiah Zahinoor Ismail Serge Gauthier | 2021 | Translational Neurodegeneration2021,10,1: | 2 |
