1Antimony speciation in the environment:Recent advances in understanding the biogeochemical processes and ecological effects显示文摘Antimony(Sb) is a toxic metalloid, and its pollution has become a global environmental problem as a result of its extensive use and corresponding Sb-mining activities. The toxicity and mobility of Sb strongly depend on its chemical speciation. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the biogeochemical processes(including emission, distribution,speciation, redox, metabolism and toxicity) that trigger the mobilization and transformation of Sb from pollution sources to the surrounding environment. Natural phenomena such as weathering, biological activity and volcanic activity, together with anthropogenic inputs, are responsible for the emission of Sb into the environment. Sb emitted in the environment can adsorb and undergo redox reactions on organic or inorganic environmental media, thus changing its existing form and exerting toxic effects on the ecosystem. 2Comparative analyses of leaf anatomy of dicotyledonous species in Tibetan and Inner Mongolian grasslands显示文摘Knowledge of the leaf anatomy of grassland plants is crucial for understanding how these plants adapt to the environment. Tibetan alpine grasslands and Inner Mongolian temperate grasslands are two major grassland types in northern China. Tibetan alpine grasslands occur in high-altitude regions where the low temperatures limit plant growth. Inner Mongolian temperate grasslands are found in arid regions where moisture is the limiting factor. Few comparative studies concerning the leaf anatomy of grassland plants of the Tibetan Plateau and Inner Mongolian Plateau have been conducted. We examined leaf characteristics at 71 sites and among 65 species, across the alpine grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau and the temperate grasslands of the Inner Mongolian Plateau. We compared the leaf structures of plants with different life forms and taxonomies, and their adaptation to arid or cold environments. We explored relationships among leaf features and the effects of climatic factors (i.e., growing season temperature and precipitation) on leaf characteristics. Our results showed that (i) there were significant differences in leaf anatomy between Tibetan alpine and Inner Mongolian temperate grasslands. Except for mesophyll cell density, the values obtained for thickness of leaf tissue, surface area and volume of mesophyll cells were larger on the Tibetan Plateau than on the Inner Mongolian Plateau. (ii) Within the same family or genus, leaf anatomy showed significant differences between two regions, and trends were consistent with those of whole species. (iii) Leaf anatomy of woody and herbaceous plants also showed significant differences between the regions. Except for mesophyll cell density, the values obtained for the thickness of leaf tissue, and the surface area and volume of mesophyll cells were larger in herbaceous than in woody plants. (iv) Leaf anatomical traits changed accordingly. Total leaf thickness, thicknesses of lower and upper epidermal cells, and surface area and volume of mesophyll cells were positively correlated, while mesophyll cell density was negatively associated with those traits. (v) Growing season temperature had stronger effects on leaf anatomy than growing season precipitation. 3Sericin can reduce hippocampal neuronal apoptosis by activating the Akt signal transduction pathway in a rat model of diabetes mellitus显示文摘In the present study, a rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus was established by continuous peritoneal injection of streptozotocin. Following intragastric perfusion of sericin for 35 days, blood glucose levels significantly reduced, neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampal CA1 region decreased, hippocampal phosphorylated Akt and nuclear factor kappa B expression were enhanced, but Bcl-xL/Bcl-2 associated death promoter expression decreased. 4H7N9 virus infection triggers lethal cytokine storm by activating gasdermin E-mediated pyroptosis of lung alveolar epithelial cells显示文摘The H7N9 influenza virus emerged in China in 2013,causing more than 1560 human infections,39% of which were fatal.A ‘cytokine storm’ in the lungs of H7N9 patients has been linked to a poor prognosis and death;however,the underlying mechanism that triggers the cytokine storm is unknown.Here,we found that efficient replication of the H7N9 virus in mouse lungs activates gasdermin E(GSDME)-mediated pyroptosis in alveolar epithelial cells,and that the released cytosolic contents then trigger a cytokine storm.Knockout of Gsdme switched the manner of death of A549 and human primary alveolar epithelial cells from pyroptosis to apoptosis upon H7N9 virus infection,and Gsdme knockout mice survived H7N9 virus lethal infection.Our findings reveal that GSDME activation is a key and unique mechanism for the pulmonary cytokine storm and lethal outcome of H7N9 virus infection and thus opens a new door for the development of antivirals against the H7N9 virus.Xiaopeng Wan Jiqing Li Yupeng Wang Xiaofei Yu Xijun He Jianzhong Shi Guohua Deng Xianying Zeng Guobin Tian Yanbing Li Yongping Jiang Yuntao Guan Chengjun Li Feng Shao Hualan Chen 2022National Science Review2022,9,1:3
5Effect of sericin on diabetic hippocampal growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor 1 axis显示文摘Previous studies have shown that sericin extracted from silk cocoon significantly reduces blood glucose levels and protects the nervous system against diabetes mellitus. In this study, a rat type 2 diabetes mellitus model was established by intraperitoneal injection of 25 mg/kg streptozotocin for 3 successive days, following which the rats were treated with sericin for 35 days. After treatment, the blood glucose levels of the diabetic rats decreased significantly, the growth hormone level in serum and its expression in the hippocampus decreased significantly, while the insulin-like growth factor-1 level in serum and insulin-like growth factor-1 and growth hormone receptor expression in the hippocampus increased significantly. 7The new chimeric chiron genes evolved essential roles in zebrafish embryonic development by regulating NAD+ levels显示文摘The origination of new genes is important for generating genetic novelties for adaptive evolution and biological diversity.However, their potential roles in embryonic development, evolutionary processes into ancient networks, and contributions to adaptive evolution remain poorly investigated. Here, we identified a novel chimeric gene family, the chiron family, and explored its genetic basis and functional evolution underlying the adaptive evolution of Danioninae fishes. The ancestral chiron gene originated through retroposition of nampt in Danioninae 48–54 million years ago(Mya) and expanded into five duplicates(chiron1–5) in zebrafish 1–4 Mya. The chiron genes(chirons) likely originated in embryonic development and gradually extended their expression in the testis. Functional experiments showed that chirons were essential for zebrafish embryo development. By integrating into the NAD^(+) synthesis pathway, chirons could directly catalyze the NAD^(+) rate-limiting reaction and probably impact two energy metabolism genes(nmnat 1 and naprt) to be under positive selection in Danioninae fishes. Together,these results mainly demonstrated that the origin of new chimeric chiron genes may be involved in adaptive evolution by integrating and impacting the NAD^(+) biosynthetic pathway. 9Characteristics and source attribution of PM2.5 during 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou: Efficacy of radical measures to reduce source emissions显示文摘A field campaign was conducted to study the PM2.5 and atmospheric gases and aerosol’s components to evaluate the efficacy of radical measures implemented by the Chinese government to improve air quality during the 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou China.The lower level of PM2.5(32.48±11.03μg/m3)observed during the control period compared to precontrol and post-control periods showed that PM2.5 was alleviated by control policies.Based on the mass concentrations of particulate components,the emissions of PM2.5 from local sources including fossil fuel,coal combustion,industry and construction were effectively reduced,but non-exhaust emission was not reduced as effectively as expected.The accumulation of SNA(SO42-,NO3-,NH4+)was observed during the control period,due to the favourable synoptic weather conditions for photochemical reactions and heterogeneous hydrolysis.Because of transboundary transport during the control period,air masses from remote areas contributed significantly to local PM2.5.Although,secondary organic carbon(OCsec)exhibited more sensitivity than primary organic carbon(OCpri)to control measures,and the increased nitrogen oxidation ratio(NOR)implied the regional transport of aged sec-ondary aerosols to the study area.Overall,the results from various approaches revealed that local pollution sources were kept under control,indicating that the implementation of mitigation measures were helpful in improving the air quality of Hangzhou during G20 summit.To reduce ambient levels of PM2.5 further in Hangzhou,regional control policies may have to be taken so as to reduce the impact of long-range transport of air masses from inland China.Ke Chen Sarah E.Metcalfe Huan Yu Jingsha Xu Honghui Xu Dongsheng Ji Chengjun Wang Hang Xiao Jun He 2021Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,8:1
10Alkaline Phosphatase-Initiated Sensitive Responsiveness of Activatable Probes to Hydrogen Sulfide for Accurate Cancer Imaging and Differentiation显示文摘Optical imaging with molecular probes is becoming an essential tool for advancing biological research and clinical applications.However,most currently available molecular probes show limited sensitivity,specificity,and accuracy due to their typical responsiveness to a single stimulation for biomarker-based imaging.In this study,we develop a novel molecular probe that shows alkaline phosphatase(ALP)-instructed sensitive responsiveness to hydrogen sulfide for accurate cancer imaging and differentiation.This designed probe in an aggregated state under physiological conditions bears negatively charged surfaces,giving poor optical response to H_(2)S.The ALP-mediated dephosphorylation reaction yields an assembled product with a positively charged surface,affording significantly aggregation-enhanced responsiveness to H_(2)S with light-up NIR fluorescence at 755 nm.Such charge reversal of assembled probe from negative to positive plays a vital role in allowing precise visualization and differentiation of cancers based on differences in ALP upregulation and H_(2)S content.We envisage that our charge-reversal strategy for multiple-parameter-activated molecule probes will facilitate boosting the specificity and precision of cancer imaging.Rongchen Wang Kai Yin Muye Ma Tianli Zhu Jinzhu Gao Jie Sun Xuemei Dong Chengjun Dong Xianfeng Gu He Tian Chunchang Zhao 2022CCS Chemistry2022,4,12:0
11Spatial Inhomogeneity of Atmospheric CO_(2) Concentration and Its Uncertainty in CMIP6 Earth System Models显示文摘This paper provides a systematic evaluation of the ability of 12 Earth System Models(ESMs)participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)to simulate the spatial inhomogeneity of the atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2))concentration.The multi-model ensemble mean(MME)can reasonably simulate the increasing trend of CO_(2) concentration from 1850 to 2014,compared with the observation data from the Scripps CO_(2) Program and CMIP6 prescribed data,and improves upon the CMIP5 MME CO_(2) concentration(which is overestimated after 1950).The growth rate of CO_(2) concentration in the northern hemisphere(NH)is higher than that in the southern hemisphere(SH),with the highest growth rate in the mid-latitudes of the NH.The MME can also reasonably simulate the seasonal amplitude of CO_(2) concentration,which is larger in the NH than in the SH and grows in amplitude after the 1950s(especially in the NH).Although the results of the MME are reasonable,there is a large spread among ESMs,and the difference between the ESMs increases with time.The MME results show that regions with relatively large CO_(2) concentrations(such as northern Russia,eastern China,Southeast Asia,the eastern United States,northern South America,and southern Africa)have greater seasonal variability and also exhibit a larger inter-model spread.Compared with CMIP5,the CMIP6 MME simulates an average spatial distribution of CO_(2) concentration that is much closer to the site observations,but the CMIP6-inter-model spread is larger.The inter-model differences of the annual means and seasonal cycles of atmospheric CO_(2) concentration are both attributed to the differences in natural sources and sinks of CO_(2) between the simulations.Chengjun XIE Tongwen WU Jie ZHANG Kalli FURTADO Yumeng ZHOU Yanwu ZHANG Fanghua WU Weihua JIE He ZHAO Mengzhe ZHENG 2023Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2023,40,11:0

13Environmental heterogeneity regulates species-area relationships through the spatial distribution of species显示文摘Species-area relationships(SARs),also known as species-area curves,are fundamental scaling tools for biodiversity research.Sampling design and taxonomic groups affect the widely cited forms of species-area curves.However,the influence of sampling design and related environmental heterogeneity on SAR curves is rarely considered.Here,we investigated the SAR among different plant life forms(herbaceous plants,shrubs,and trees)in a 25.2-ha ForestGEO plot,the Wanglang Plot,in Sichuan,southwestern China,using a non-contiguous quadrat sampling method and power-law model.We compared the estimated parameters(the intercept c and the slope z)of the power-law models among different plant life forms,tested whether the SAR curve forms varied with sampling starting location,and assessed the effect of environmental heterogeneity accumulating with sampling area on curve variation.We found a wider range of variations in the SARs.The estimated c,z-values of power SAR were higher for the herbaceous plants than for the woody plants.A wider variation of SARs for the herbaceous plants than those for the woody plants.The selection of sampling starting location affected the SAR curve forms because of the roles of soil and topographic heterogeneity.We concluded that environmental heterogeneity regulates SAR curves sampled from different starting locations through spatial distribution of plant life forms.Thus,we recommend considering the design of sampling starting location when constructing SAR curves,especially in a heterogeneous habitat with unrandom distribution patterns of species.Chenqi He Leqi Fang Xinyu Xiong Fan Fan Yangang Li Luoshu He Xiaoli Shen Sheng Li Chengjun Ji Jiangling Zhu 2022Forest Ecosystems2022,9,3:0
14Designing cancer nanodrugs that are highly loaded,pH-responsive,photothermal, and possess a favored morphology:A hierarchical assembly of DOX and layer-by-layer modified rGO显示文摘An effective cancer nanodrug not only needs to load a large fraction of pharmaceutical molecules and release them in responsive ways, to function as imaging and photothermal agents, but also needs to possess the favorable morphologies that are favored by the EPR effect of cancer tissues. In this study, we designed a spherical nanodrug by forming clusters using DOX and a polymer-engineered rGO. These spherical nanodrugs had a diameter of around 750 nm and assumed both functionalities of chemical therapy and the photothermal effect. In addition, this nanodrug featured a high-loading capability of DOX, a pH-responsive release profile, a self-fluorescent capability, and an effective accumulation in cancer cells. The layer-by-layer assembly of three cycles of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) around the rGO core was indispensable in achieving a chemically-modified rGO precursor that assembled with DOX to produce the spherical nanodrug. 15Interactive effects of elevated CO_(2)and temperature on the anatomical characteristics of leaves in eleven species显示文摘The anatomical features of leaves in 11 species of plantsgrowninatemperaturegradientandatemperature+CO_(2)gradient were studied.The palisade parenchyma thickness,the spongy parenchyma thickness and the total leaf thickness were measured and analyzed to investigate the effects of ele-vated temperature and CO_(2)on the anatomical characteristics of the leaves.Our results show that with the increase of temperature,the leaf thickness of C_(4)species increased while the leaf thickness of C_(3)species showed no constant changes.With increased CO_(2),seven out of nine C_(3)species exhibited increased total leaf thickness.In C_(4)species,leaf thickness decreased.As for the trend on the multi-grades,the plants exhibited linear or non-linear changes.With the increase of temperature or both temperature and CO_(2)for the 11 species investigated,leaf thickness varied greatly in different plants(species)and even in different branches on the same plant.These results demonstrated that the effect of increasing CO_(2)and temperature on the anatomical features of the leaves were species-specific.Since plant structures are correlated with plant functions,the changes in leaf anatomical characteristics in elevated temperature and CO_(2)may lead to functional differences.HAN Mei JI Chengjun ZUO Wenyun HE Jinsheng 2007Frontiers in Biology2007,2,3:0
16Upper-Ocean Lateral Heat Transports in the Nino3.4 Region and Their Connection with ENSO显示文摘In the Nino3.4 region(tropical Pacific,5°S-5°N,170°-120°W),sea surface temperature(SST)changes are highly correlated with temperature variations in the upper 40-m layer.This study explores the upper-ocean heat budget in the Nino3.4 region using Ocean Reanalysis System 5(ORAS5)monthly data from 1979 to 2018,with a focus on ocean heat transports at lateral boundaries in the top 40-m layer and their correlation with temperature variations.In the region,there is a well-defined structure of opposite meridional circulation in the upper and lower parts of the thermocline,characterized by divergence in the upper layer above 40 m and convergence in the lower layer.The change of mean temperature in the upper layer is determined by the sum of zonal,meridional,and vertical heat transports,which,however,tend to largely compensate for each other.In general,part of the surface heat flux from the atmosphere to the ocean and the heat transport from the subsurface ocean are transported out of the domain by meridional and zonal currents,leaving only a tiny part to warm or cool the upper ocean.The amplitude of the net surface heat flux effective for the entire 40-m layer of the ocean is weaker than the lateral heat transport.On an interannual timescale,variations of heat transports in both zonal and meridional are positively correlated with temperature anomalies,while the vertical heat transport from the subsurface ocean is negatively correlated.Composite analyses for five El Nino events and five La Nina events also revealed that there is a positive contribution of horizontal transport convergence to temperature anomalies during the evolution of El Nino(warming)and La Nina(cooling),while vertical transport acts against temperature variations.He ZHAO Tongwen WU Laurent ZXLI Fanghua WU Weihua JIE Xiangwen LIU Ronghua ZHANG Chengjun XIE 2022Journal of Meteorological Research2022,36,2:0
