4Continental-scale assessment of provisioning soil functions in Europe显示文摘Introduction:A framework is developed to link major soil functions to ecosystem services assessment.Provisioning soil functions—with primary linkages to ecosystem services—are evaluated on a continental scale in Europe.Methods:We defined major provisioning soil functions combining the approaches proposed by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection of the European Union.Soil productivity was evaluated by three main land use types(cropland,grassland,forest)using a validated expert model called SoilProd.Models include soil,climate and topographic criteria.Raw material provision capacity of soils was assessed on the basis of(i)organic carbon content and(ii)availability of soil materials for construction.Results:A coherent system of soil function-based ecosystem services was compiled,taking into account major soil functions.We also produced new data on soil-based provisioning ecosystem services,including productivity and raw material availability.The attempts to cover the main human activities requiring materials of soil origin and to map the locations where those materials are available on a continental scale provide new insight to this field of research.Conclusions:Soil-based ecosystem services can be assessed by the evaluation of soil functions which play a role in the production of these services.Quantitative analysis and comparison of the spatial distribution of the investigated soil functions were performed.While crop productivity showed a general trend to increase in a northward and westward direction,local soil quality in most regions—except in the Mediterranean—can compensate for climatic handicaps to a great extent.Comparison of areas with potential for providing ecosystem services by individual soil functions highlights the complexity of decision-making for resource utilization but also the possibilities for optimization and more conscious management.Gergely Tóth Ciro Gardi Katalin Bódis Éva Ivits Ece Aksoy Arwyn Jones Simon Jeffrey Thorum Petursdottir Luca Montanarella Institute for Environment and Sustainability Via Fermi 2013Ecological Processes2013,2,1:1

6European digital archive on soil maps (EuDASM): preserving important soil data for public free access显示文摘Historical soil survey paper maps are valuable resources that underpin strategies to support soil protection and promote sustainable land use practices,especially in developing countries where digital soil information is often missing.However,many of the soil maps,in particular those for developing countries,are held in traditional archives that are not easily accessible to potential users.Additionally,many of these documents are over 50 years old and are beginning to deteriorate.Realising the need to conserve this information,the Joint Research Centre(JRC)and the ISRIC-World Soil Information foundation have created the European Digital Archive of Soil Maps(EuDASM),through which all archived paper maps of ISRIC has been made accessible to the public through the Internet.The immediate objective is to transfer paper-based soil maps into a digital format with the maximum possible resolution and to ensure their preservation and easy disclosure.More than 6,000 maps from 135 countries have been captured and are freely available to users through a user-friendly web-based interface.Initial feedback has been very positive,especially from users in Africa,South America and Asia to whom archived soil maps were made available to local users,often for the first time.Link:http://gffzzd33f8a88fffe45a2hcop9on0wv5696f0w.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/library/maps/country_maps/list_countries.cfm.Panos Panagos Arwyn Jones Claudio Bosco PSSenthil Kumar 2011International Journal of Digital Earth2011,4,5:0
