Children in Disaster Risk Reduction in Portugal: Policies,Education, and (Non) Participation显示文摘International agencies and scientific research have been calling for the inclusion of children in disaster preparedness and risk reduction, to hear their voices in order to address their specific needs and vulnerabilities and harness their capabilities in terms of building community resilience. This article assesses the roles ascribed to children in policy and education for disaster risk reduction in Portugal. The approach is based on a scoping methodology that encompasses document analysis and interviews with national and local stakeholders and policymakers in the disaster risk reduction field. The research is carried out within the scope of a European funded project, CUIDAR Cultures of Disaster Resilience among Children and Young People. More specifically, the article provides an overview of the discourses on the roles ascribed to children in urban disaster risk reduction(DRR). The authors maintain that although children are often taken as a target group in urban disaster prevention and management, they are seldom considered in terms of active participation in disaster risk reduction programs in the Portuguese context. Nevertheless, our analysis shows that there is a growing awareness of the relevance of active participation by children in order to create successful DRR. | Ana Delicado ussara Rowland Susana Fonseca Ana Nunes de Almeida Luísa Schmidt Ana Sofia Ribeiro | 2017 | International Journal of Disaster Risk Science2017,8,3: | 2

The preventive and therapeutic potential of native Brazilian fruits on colorectal cancer显示文摘In the last years, colorectal cancer(CRC)has been increasing substantially in developing countries. While the consumption of fat and meat have been linked with increased CRC risk, fruits intake can be protective. In addition, since CRC’s chemotherapy may be accompanied with adverse effects, natural plant products have been postulated as alternative or complementary therapeutic options.Brazilian fruits are rich sources of bioactive compounds, mainly phenolic compounds, with antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and anticancer benefits, thus, future candidates for CRC management. Therefore, this narrative review aims to present and discuss the potential of native Brazilian fruits(e.g.,açaí,cocoa,jaboticaba,passionfruit)on CRC.Experimental studies performed from 2001 to present were considered.Polyphenol-rich powders and extracts from Brazilian fruits are the most promising products for CRC management.Studies with açaí(Euterpe oleracea)and cocoa(Theobroma cacao)are more numerous and their effects on CRC models in vitro and in vivo are demonstrated with more complexity in terms of molecular mechanisms. The main signaling pathways modulated by the effects of native Brazilian fruits,so far studied on CRC,are associated with:1.apoptosis(B-cell lymphoma 2-and caspase 3-related proteins),2.inflammation(pro-inflammatory interleukins and enzymes),and 3.oxidative stress(antioxidant enzymes). In addition, adhesion molecules and nuclear factor kappa B have been shown to be downregulated, which can interfere positively in several cellular processes, including proliferation, angiogenesis, and migration. The investigation of signaling pathways of great relevance for CRC initiation and progression is still necessary. | Roberto de Paula do Nascimento Lívia Mateus Reguengo Ana Paula da Fonseca Machado Mario Roberto Marostica Junior | 2022 | Food Bioscience2022,46,2: | 0

An aqueous extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan alters the labeling of blood constituents with Technetium-99m显示文摘The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties, such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities. The influence of an extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was investigated.Anticoagulated blood(Wistar rats) was incubated with the extract, stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium pertechnetate.Samples were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood constituents. The percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was determined. The analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(P<0.05) the %ATI(from 96.48 ± 1.19 to 54.46 ± 7.38) on blood cells compartment,(from 81.11 ± 4.15 to 61.33 ± 4.74) on insoluble fractions of blood cells and(from 65.91 ± 2.44 to 13.15 ± 3.62) on insoluble fractions of plasma. In conclusion, the results suggest that the substances present on this extract can alter this labeling process, probably due to(i) redox properties(antioxidant and chelator activities) and/or(ii) specific actions in the binding sites where the 99mTc would be bound on the blood constituents. As a consequence, precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LWDHW,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models. | MATOS Vernica Soares de CARMO Fernanda Santos do DINIZ Claudia Leite NASCIMENTO Ana Lucia Rosa PEREIRA Márcia Oliveira FERNANDES Joelma Fonseca de Oliveira SANTOS-FILHO Sebastiao David MORENO Silvana Ramos Farias BERNARDO-FILHO Mario | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,18: | 0
Ecophysiological acclimatization to cyclic water stress in Eucalyptus显示文摘Drought is considered the main environmental factor limiting productivity in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, recent studies have reported that exposure to water deficit conditions enables plants to respond to subsequent stresses. Thus, this study investigates the ecophysiological acclimatization of eucalyptus clones submitted to recurrent water deficit cycles. Eucalyptus seedlings were submitted to three recurrent water deficit cycles and anatomical, morphological and physiological changes were analyzed. The results were:(1) Eucalyptus seedlings responded to water deficits by directing carbohydrates to root and stem growth;(2) Size and number of stomata were reduced;(3) Stomatal conductance decreased which allowed the plants to reduce water losses through transpiration, increasing instantaneous water use efficiency;(4) The relationship between gas exchanges and available water contents allowed the seedlings to uptake the retained soil water athigher tensions;and,(5) Physiological recovery from subsequent water deficits became faster. As a result of these changes, the eucalyptus seedlings recovered from the same degree of water stress more rapidly. | Rogerio de Souza Noia Junior Genilda Canuto Amaral Jose Eduardo Macedo Pezzopane Mariana Duarte Silva Fonseca Ana Paula Camara da Silva Talita Miranda Teixeira Xavier | 2020 | Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,3: | 0
Native and exotic seed dispersal by the stone marten(Martes foina):implications for the regeneration of a relict climactic forest in central Portugal显示文摘The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits, thus potentially promoting seed dispersion. The present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest, central Portugal, and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape types.Seeds from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery, following a randomized experimental setup.Plant emergence was monitored fortnightly.Generalized linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native R.ulmifolius but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive species. This suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant seeds. However, although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species, the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of P.laurocerasus.Our study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions, enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management. | Lúcia PEREIRA Ana VASQUES Paula MAIA Maria João RAMOS PEREIRA Carlos FONSECA Milena MATOS | 2019 | Integrative Zoology2019,14,3: | 0

Control of inherited structural fabric on the development and exhumation of passive margins-Insights from the AraçuaíOrogen(Brazil)显示文摘The AraçuaíOrogen,in eastern Brazil, was formed during the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian amalgamation of West Gondwana.During the Mesozoic–Cenozoic opening of the South Atlantic Ocean, and the associated divergent tectonics, the orogen developed as basement to the passive margin of South America and was progressively covered by thick offshore sedimentary basins, particularly the Espírito Santo,Mucuri, and Cumuruxatiba basins,in which hydrocarbon systems have been exploited. Our understanding of the AraçuaíOrogen’s passive margin evolution, erosion, and sediment transfer to these basins ultimately depends on constraining the onshore exhumation in response to Mesozoic–Cenozoic events. Here, new and previously published data from apatite fission-track(AFT)analyses and inverse thermal history modelling of(Pre)Cambrian basement rocks from the AraçuaíOrogen resolve three discrete basement cooling and associated erosional exhumation episodes. In the Pre-Rift phase,Jurassic–Hauterivian erosion of the AraçuaíOrogen is most likely related to the adjoining intra-continental West Gondwana flexural subsidence, which increased hillslope and river erosion power. In the Rift and Transitional phases,Barremian–Albian accelerated phase of erosion is associated with the uplift of the Atlantic rift shoulders and the establishment of an oceanic base-level.In the Drift phase, reactivations in response to far-field stresses likely triggered a Late Cretaceous–Paleocene rapid erosion event. The rates at which these events unfolded vary spatially and are controlled by inherited structures. The AraçuaíOrogen experienced slower denudation rates in areas closer to the São Francisco Craton, which suggests that the tectonic reactivation and related surface uplift during the Mesozoic–Cenozoic is in first-order controlled by lithospheric rigidity.Furthermore, the structural framework of the Paramirim and Pirapora aulacogens and NE-oriented shear zones in the orogen’s southeast facilitated later reactivations. From the spatial pattern of denudation/exhumation of the AraçuaíOrogen during the Mesozoic–Cenozoic,we draw inferences on the tectonic development of the offshore basins regarding their hydrocarbon potentials. | Ana Fonseca Tiago Novo Tobias Fonte-Boa Matheus Kuchenbecker Daniel Galvão Carnier Fragoso Daniel Peifer Antônio Carlos Pedrosa-Soares Johan De Grave | 2023 | Geoscience Frontiers2023,14,6: | 0
