Ultrafast laser processing of materials: from science to industry显示文摘Processing of materials by ultrashort laser pulses has evolved significantly over the last decade and is starting to reveal its scientific, technological and industrial potential. In ultrafast laser manufacturing, optical energy of tightly focused femtosecond or picosecond laser pulses can be delivered to precisely defined positions in the bulk of materials via two-/multi-photon excitation on a timescale much faster than thermal energy exchange between photoexcited electrons and lattice ions.Control of photoionization and thermal processes with the highest precision, inducing local photomodification in sub-100-nm-sized regions has been achieved.State-of-the-art ultrashort laser processing techniques exploit high 0.1–1μm spatial resolution and almost unrestricted three-dimensional structuring capability.Adjustable pulse duration, spatiotemporal chirp, phase front tilt and polarization allow control of photomodification via uniquely wide parameter space.Mature opto-electrical/mechanical technologies have enabled laser processing speeds approaching meters-per-second,leading to a fast lab-to-fab transfer. The key aspects and latest achievements are reviewed with an emphasis on the fundamental relation between spatial resolution and total fabrication throughput.Emerging biomedical applications implementing micrometer feature precision over centimeter-scale scaffolds and photonic wire bonding in telecommunications are highlighted.Mangirdas Malinauskas Albertas Žukauskas Satoshi Hasegawa Yoshio Hayasaki Vygantas Mizeikis Ričardas Buividas Saulius Juodkazis 2016Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1:37
Numerical simulation of mechanisms of deformation, failure and energy dissipation in porous rock media subjected to wave stresses显示文摘The pore characteristics, mineral compositions, physical and mechanical properties of the subarkose sandstones were acquired by means of CT scan,X-ray diffraction and physical tests.A few physical models possessing the same pore characteristics and matrix properties but different porosities compared to the natural sandstones were developed. The 3D finite element models of the rock media with varied porosities were established based on the CT image processing of the physical models and the MIMICS software platform. The failure processes of the porous rock media loaded by the split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) were simulated by satisfying the elastic wave propagation theory. The dynamic responses, stress transition, deformation and failure mechanisms of the porous rock media subjected to the wave stresses were analyzed. It is shown that an explicit and quantitative analysis of the stress, strain and deformation and failure mechanisms of porous rocks under the wave stresses can be achieved by using the developed 3D finite element models. With applied wave stresses of certain amplitude and velocity,no evident pore deformation was observed for the rock media with a porosity less than 15%.The deformation is dominantly the combination of microplasticity(shear strain),cracking(tensile strain) of matrix and coalescence of the cracked regions around pores.Shear stresses lead to microplasticity, while tensile stresses result in cracking of the matrix.Cracking and coalescence of the matrix elements in the neighborhood of pores resulted from the high transverse tensile stress or tensile strain which exceeded the threshold values. The simulation results of stress wave propagation, deformation and failure mechanisms and energy dissipation in porous rock media were in good agreement with the physical tests. The present study provides a reference for analyzing the intrinsic mechanisms of the complex dynamic response, stress transit mode, deformation and failure mechanisms and the disaster mechanisms of rock media.JU Yang1,2,WANG HuiJie1,YANG YongMing1,HU QinAng3 & PENG RuiDong1 1 State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining,Beijing Key Laboratory of Fracture and Damage Mechanics of Rock and Concrete,China University of Mining and Technology,Beijing 100083,China 2 Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering,University of Calgary,Calgary,Alberta,T2N 1N4,Canada 3 School of Environment and Civil Engineering,College of Engineering,Oklahoma State University,Stillwater,OK 74078,USA 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,4:32
Simple geometrical explanation of Gurtin-Murdoch model of surface elasticity with clarification of its related versions显示文摘It is showed that all equations of the linearized Gurtin-Murdoch model of surface elasticity can be derived, in a straightforward way, from a simple second-order expression for the ratio of deformed surface area to initial surface area. This elementary derivation offers a simple explanation for all unique features of the model and its simplified/modified versions, and helps to clarify some misunderstandings of the model already occurring in the literature. Finally, it is demonstrated that, because the Gurtin-Murdoch model is based on a hybrid formulation combining linearized deformation of bulk material with 2nd-order finite deformation of the surface, caution is needed when the original form of this model is applied to bending deformation of thin-walled elastic structures with surface stress.Ru C. 4Radioembolization with Yttrium-90 microspheres in hepatocellular carcinoma:Role and perspectives显示文摘Transarterial radioembolization(TARE) is a form of brachytherapy in which intra-arterially injected yttrium-90-loaded microspheres serve as a source for internal radiation purposes. On the average,it produces disease control rates exceeding 80% and it is a consolidated therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC);however, current data are all based on retrospective series or non-controlled prospective studies since randomized controlled trials comparing it with the other liver-directed therapies for intermediate and locally advanced stage HCC are still underway. The data available show that TARE provides similar or even better survival rates when compared to transarterial chemoembolization(TACE).First-line TARE is best indicated for both intermediatestage patients(staged according to the barcelona clinic liver cancer staging classification) who have lesions which respond poorly to TACE due to multiple tumors or a large tumor burden, and for locally advanced-stage patients with solitary tumors, and segmental or lobar portal vein tumor thrombosis. In addition, emerging data have suggested the use of TARE in patients who are classified slightly beyond the Milan criteria regarding radical treatment for downstaging purposes. As a secondline treatment,TARE can also be applied in patients progressing to TACE or sorafenib;a large number of phase Ⅱ/Ⅲ trials are ongoing with the purpose of evaluating the best association with systemic therapies.Transarterial radioembolization is very well tolerated and has a low rate of complications which are mainly related to unintended non-target tissue irradiation, including the surrounding liver parenchyma. The complications can be additionally reduced by accurate patient selection and a strict pre-treatment evaluation including dosimetry and assessment of the vascular anatomy.Since a correct treatment algorithm for potential TARE candidates is not clear and standardized, this comprehensive review analyzes the best selection criteria for patients who really benefit from TARE and also the new advances of this therapy, which can be a very important weapon against HCC.Cristina Mosconi Alberta Cappelli Cinzia Pettinato Rita Golfieri 2015World Journal of Hepatology2015,7,5:10
High-accuracy topographical information extraction based on fusion of ASTER stereo-data and ICESat/GLAS data in Antarctica显示文摘In order to better support Antarctic inland ice sheet expedition from Zhongshan Station to Dome A,the topographic data are necessary. At present, although the entire Antarctic DEM provided by RAMP(Ra-darsat Antarctic Mapping Project) was estimated at the highest horizontal(spatial) resolution of about 200 m,the real horizontal resolution of the DEM varies from place to place depending on the density and scale of the original source data. For ice shelves and the inland ice sheet, the horizontal resolution is about 5 km;the vertical accuracy is estimated to be ±50 m in interior East Antarctic ice sheet and away from the mountain ranges. Therefore, more accurate topographic data are unavailable in Antarc-tica.In order to meet the requirements of high-accuracy topographic information for further researches, this paper mainly addresses a fusion study of ASTER stereo pairs and ICESat/GLAS altimetry data for extraction of high-accuracy DEM in East Antarctica, based on the high horizontal resolution(15 m) of ASTER and vertical accuracy(13.8 cm) of ICESat/GLAS.First,some altimetry data were selected as vertical control points to reduce errors of image correlation matching during the extraction of ASTER-based DEM.Second, ice sheet altimetry data derived from ICESat were used to generate DEM ranging from 75° to 81°S because existing ASTER data do not cover this area and high density of the coverage of ICESat altimetry data. Finally, the DEM in coverage of the expedition route was produced. The analysis of result reveals that the DEM accuracy is improved significantly. The absolute vertical accuracy of DEM is higher than 15 m in some cases and higher than 30 m for all the areas along the expedition route except from the 009-001 scene;the interior accuracy is higher than 15 m and higher than 7 m in some cases. It can meet the requirements of topographic map at 1:50000 scale, which is an economic and advantageous method to produce the topographic products.E DongChen1,3,SHEN Qiang2,XU Ying1,3 & CHEN Gang4 1 Chinese Antarctic Center of Surveying and Mapping,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430079,China 2 Institute of Seismology China Earthquake Administration,Wuhan 430071,China 3 Key Laboratory of Polar Surveying and Mapping,State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430079,China 4 Department of Geography,University of Calgary,Calgary,Alberta T2N 1N4,Canada 2009Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,5:9
Strategic Assessment Model and Its Application:a Case Study显示文摘Accurate and effective assessment of strategic alternatives of an organization directly affects the decision-making and execution of its deve1opment strategy. In evaIuation of strategic alternatives , relevant elements from both interna1 and external environments of an organization must be considered. In this paper we use strategic assessment model to evaluate strategic alternatives of an air-conditioning company. Strategic objectives and alternatives of the company are developed through analysis of the competitive environment, key competitors and internal conditions. The environment factors are classified into internal, task, and general opportunities and threats. Ana1ytical hierarchy process, subjective probabilities, entropy concept, and utility theory are used to enhance decision-maker’s ability in evaluating strategic alternatives. The evatuation results show that the most effective strategic alternative for the company is to reduce types of products, concentrate its effort on producing window-type and cupboard-type air-conditioners, enlarge the production scale, and pre-empt the market. The company has made great progress by implementing this alternative. We conc1ude that SAM is an appropriate tool for eva1uating strategic alternatives.ZHU Xiu-wen1, CAO Meng-xia1, ZHU Ning1, ZUO Ming-jian2 1. 7Clinical effectiveness of palifermin in prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: a case–control study显示文摘The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of palifermin, an N-terminal truncated version of endogenous keratinocyte growth factor, in the control of oral mucositis during antiblastic therapy. Twenty patients undergoing allogeneic stem-cell transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were treated with palifermin, and compared to a control group with the same number of subjects and similar inclusion criteria. Statistical analysis were performed to compare the outcomes in the treatment vs. control groups. In the treatment group, we found a statistically significant reduction in the duration of parenteral nutrition(P50.002), duration of mucositis(P50.003) and the average grade of mucositis(P50.03). The statistical analysis showed that the drug was able to decrease the severity of mucositis. These data, although preliminary, suggest that palifermin could be a valid therapeutic adjuvant to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from leukaemia.Dorina Lauritano Massimo Petruzzi Dario Di Stasio Alberta Lucchese 2014International Journal of Oral Science2014,6,1:3

Identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa genes associated with antibiotic susceptibility显示文摘Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes acute and chronic infections in humans and these infections are difficult to treat due to the bacteria’s high-level of intrinsic and acquired resistance to antibiotics. To address this problem, it is crucial to investigate the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in this organism. In this study, a P. aeruginosa transposon insertion library of 17000 clones was constructed and screened for altered susceptibility to seven antibiotics. Colonies grown on agar plates con- taining antibiotics at minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and those unable to grow at ? MIC were collected. The transposon-disrupted genes in 43 confirmed mutants that showed at least a three-fold increase or a two-fold decrease in suscep- tibility to at least one antibiotic were determined by semi-random PCR and subsequent sequencing analysis. In addition to nine genes known to be associated with antibiotic resistance, including mexI, mexB and mexR, 24 new antibiotic resis- tance-associated genes were identified, including a fimbrial biogenesis gene pilY1 whose disruption resulted in a 128-fold in- crease in the MIC of carbenicillin. Twelve of the 43 genes identified were of unknown function. These genes could serve as targets to control or reverse antibiotic resistance in this important human pathogen.CHEN Lin1, YANG Liang1, ZHAO XingYan1, SHEN LiXin1 & DUAN KangMin1,2* 1Molecular Microbiology Laboratory, Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory in Western China, Northwest University, Xi’an 710069, China 2Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N1, Canada 2010Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,10:3
Families of magnetic semiconductors——an overview显示文摘The interplay of magnetic and semiconducting properties has been in the focus for more than a half of the century. In this introductory article we briefly review the key properties and functionalities of various magnetic semiconductor families, including europium chalcogenides, chromium spinels, dilute magnetic semiconductors, dilute ferromagnetic semiconductors and insulators, mentioning also sources of non-uniformities in the magnetization distribution, accounting for an apparent high Curie temperature ferromagnetism in many systems. Our survey is carried out from today's perspective of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spintronics as well as of the emerging fields of magnetic topological materials and atomically thin 2D layers.Tomasz Dietl Alberta Bonanni Hideo Ohno 2019Journal of Semiconductors2019,40,8:3
Noncontrast-enhanced MRI-based Noninvasive Score for Portal Hypertension(CHESS1802):An International Multicenter Study显示文摘Background and Aims:This study aimed to determine the performance of the non-invasive score using noncontrastenhanced MRI(CHESS-DIS score)for detecting portal hy-pertension in cirrhosis. Methods:In this international multicenter, diagnostic study(ClinicalTrials.gov,NCT03766880),patients with cirrhosis who had hepatic venous pressure gradient(HVPG)measurement and noncontrast-enhanced MRI were prospectively recruited from four university hospitals in China(n=4)and Turkey(n=1)between December 2018 and April 2019.A cohort of patients was retrospectively recruited from a university hospital in Italy between March 2015 and November 2017.After segmentation of the liver on fat-suppressed T1-weighted MRI maps,CHESS-DIS score was calculated automatically by an in-house developed code based on the quantification of liver surface nodularity. Results:A total of 149 patients were included,of which 124 were from four Chinese hospitals(training cohort)and 25 were from two international hospitals(validation cohort).A positive correlation between CHESS-DIS score and HVPG was found with the correlation coefficients of 0.36(p<0.0001)and 0.55(p<0.01)for the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of CHESS-DIS score in detection of clinically significant portal hypertension(CSPH)was 0.81 and 0.9 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The intra-class correlation coefficients for assessing the inter-and intra-observer agreement were 0.846 and 0.841,respectively.Conclusions:A non-invasive score using noncontrast-enhanced MRI was developed and proved to be significantly correlated with invasive HVPG.Besides, this score could be used to detect CSPH in patients with cirrhosis.Yanna Liu Tianyu Tang NecatiÖrmeci Yifei Huang Jitao Wang Xiaoguo Li Zhiwei Li Weimin An Dengxiang Liu Chunqing Zhang Changchun Liu Jinqiang Liu Chuan Liu Guangchuan Wang Cristina Mosconi Alberta Cappelli Antonio Bruno Seray Akçalar EmrecanÇelebioğlu EvrenÜstüner Sadık Bilgiç Zeynep Ellik ÖzgünÖmer Asiller Lei Li Haijun Zhang Ning Kang Dan Xu Ruiling He Yan Wang Yang Bu Ye Gu Shenghong Ju Rita Golfieri Xiaolong Qi 2021Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology2021,9,6:3
Variations in Wear Resistance of a Novel Triboalloy Pseudoelastic TiNi Alloy-with Respect to its Pseudoelasticity and Hardness显示文摘It has recently been found that TiNt shape memory alloy has another attractive property; high resistance to wear. The wear resistance of this alloy benefits from its pseudoelasticity (PE). It has, however, been noticed that other mechanical properties also affect the wear resistance, especially the hardness. Research was conducted to investigate the correlation between the wear resistance and both the PE and hardness. It has been demonstrated that when the PE is high, lower hardness leads to higher wear resistance.D.Y.Li and X.Ma Dept. of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2G6 2001Journal of Materials Science & Technology2001,17,1:3
EXTRAPOLATION AND A-POSTERIORI ERROR ESTIMATORS OF PETROV-GALERKIN METHODS FOR NON-LINEAR VOLTERRA INTEGRO-DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS显示文摘In this paper we will show that the Richardson extrapolation can be used to enhance the numerical solution generated by a Petrov-Galerkin finite element method for the initial value problem for a nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equation. As by-products, we will also show that these enhanced approximations can be used to form a class of posteriori estimators for this Petrov-Galerkin finite element method. 15Processing of tailings in Canadian oil sands industry显示文摘Vast amounts of tailings are produced daily in bitumen extraction from the Athabasca oil sands. The coarse sand from the tailings stream is used to build dykes around the containment basin. The run off slurry arrives at the water’s edge in the tailings pond at a solids concentration of about 3%~8% by mass. Settling of the solids takes place 'relatively fast', over several days, creating a 'free water zone' that contains little solids. When the fine mineral solids concentration has reached about 15% by mass, the suspension develops non Newtonian properties. After 2~3 years, the suspension concentration reaches a value of about 30% by mass at which the settling rate becomes extremely slow. Methods to handle the already created tailings ponds and new approaches to eliminate the creation of new ones will be discussed both from the industrial and fundamental prospective.J.Masliyah (Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton Alberta, Canada, T6G 2G6) 2002中国有色金属学会会刊:英文版2002,12,3:2
