| 1 | Determinants of farmers’perception to invest in soil and water conservation technologies in the North-Western Highlands of Ethiopia显示文摘Soil erosion by water is a severe and continuous ecological problem in the north-western Highlands of Ethiopia.Limited perception of farmers to practice soil and water conservation(SWC)technologies is one of the major causes that have resulted accelerated soil erosion. Therefore, this paper examines the major determinants of farmers’perception to use and invest in SWC technologies in Ankasha District,north-western highlands of Ethiopia.A detailed field survey was carried out among 338 households, randomly selected from two rural sample kebeles(called villages here after).Descriptive statistics and logistic regression model were used to analyse the effects of multiple variables on farmers’perception. The results indicate that educational level of the respondents and their access to trainings were found to have a positive and very significant association(P<0.01)with farmers’perception.Likewise, land ownership, plot size, slope type, and extension contact positively and significantly influenced farmers’perception at 5%level of significance. On the other hand, the influence of respondents’age and plot distance from the homestead was found to be negative and significant(P<0.05).The overall results of this study indicate that the perception of farmers to invest in SWC technologies was highly determined by socioeconomic, institutional, attitudinal and biophysical factors. Thus,a better understanding of constrains that influence farmers'perception is very important while designing and implementing SWC technologies.Frequent contacts between farmers and extension agents and continues agricultural trainings are also needed to increase awareness of the impacts of SWC benefits. | Desalew Meseret Moges Aklilu Amsalu Taye | 2017 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2017,5,1: | 2 |
| 2 | Evaluation of berries of Phytolacca dodecandra for growth inhibition of Histoplasma capsulatum var.farciminosum and treatment of cases of epizootic lymphangitis in Ethiopia显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the berries of Phytolacca dodecundra(P.dodecandra) for its effect on Histoplasma cupsulatum var.farciminosum(HCF) and for the treatment of cases of epizootic lymphangitis(ELi.Methods:Samples were collected from un-ruptured nodules of cases of EL at Debre Zeit and Akaki(central Ethiopia).Mycologieal culture and isolation of HCF were performed at the Akliln Lemma Institute of Pathobiology.Phytochemical screening was done for n-butanol extract of P.dodecandra to delect alkaloids, saponins, phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) and minimum fungicidal concentrations(MFCs) ol aqueous and n-butanol extracts of P.dodecandra against FICF were determined by agar dilution assay. For the in vivo trial.5%simple ointment was prepared from n-butanol extract and applied topically to 24(twelve early and twelve moderate) cases of F.L.Results:Phytochemical screening showed that n-butanol extract ol P.dodecandra was positive lor alkaloids.saponins and phenolic compounds but negative for flavonoids. The MFCs of n-butanol and aqueous extracts of P.dodecandra were(0.039%-0.078%) and(0.625%-1.250%),respectively.The MFCs of n-butanol and aqueous extracts of P.dodecandra were(0.078%t-0.156%)and(1.250%-2.500%),respectively.The MIC and MFC of ketoconazole(positive control) was(1.200×10^(-5)%-2.500×10^(-5)%) and(5.000× 10^(-5)%-1.000×10^(-4)%),respectively while growth was observed on free medium(negative control). From the total of 24 treated cases of EL,14(58.3%) responded lo treatment;however,10(41.7%) did not respond to treatment. There was no significant difference in the degree of response to treatment between early and moderate cases(χ~2=0.086:P=0.408.Conclusions:It can be concluded that n-butanol extract of P.dodecandra demonstrates antifungal effects while the aqueous extract shows no antifungal activity. | Negesse Mekonnen Eyasu Makonnen Nigatu Aklilu Gobena Ameni | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,7: | 2 |

| 15 | Malaria helminth co-infections and their contribution for aneamia in febrile patients attending Azzezo health center,Gondar,Northwest Ethiopia:a cross sectional study显示文摘Objective:To assess the prevalence of malaria helminth co-infections and their contribution for aneamia in febrile patients attending Azzezo health center,Gondar,Northwest Ethiopia. Methods:A cross section study was conducted among febrile patients attending Azezo health center from February-March 30,2011.Convenient sampling technique was used to select 384 individuals. Both capillary blood and stool were collected.Giemsa stained thick and thin blood film were prepared for identification of Plasmodium species and stool sample was examined by direct wet mount and formalin-ether concentration technique for detection of intestinal helminthes parasites.Haemoglobin concentration was determined using a portable haemoglobin spectrophotometer,Hemocue Hb 201 analyzer. Results:Out of 384 febrile patients examined for malaria parasites,44(11.5%) individuals were positive for malaria parasites,of which Plasmodium vivax accounted for 75.0%(33),Plasmodium falciparum for 20.5%(9| infectious, whereas two person (4.5%) had mixed species infection.Prevalence of malaria was higher in males(28) when compared with prevalence in females(16).More than half(207,53.9%) of study participants had one or more infection.Prevalence was slightly higher in females(109,52.7%) than in males(98,47.3%).About helminths,Ascaris lumbricoides was the predominant isolate(62.1%) followed by hookworms(18.4%). Only 22 participants were co-infected with malaria parasite and helminths and co-infection with Ascaris lumbricoides was predominant(45.0%).The prevalence of anemia was 10.9%and co-infection with Plasmodium and helminth parasites was significantly associated with(P<0.000 1) higher aneamia prevalence compared to individuals without any infection. Conclusions: Prevalence of malaria and soil transmitted helminths is high and the disease is still major health problem in the study area.Hence, simultaneous combat against the two parasitic infections is very crucial to improve health of the affected communities in economically developing countries. | Abebe Alemu Yitayal Shiferaw Aklilu Ambachew Halima Hamid | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,10: | 1 |

| 20 | Paraneoplastic Leukocytosis and Thrombocytosis as Prognostic Biomarkers in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer显示文摘Background and Objectives: Search for inexpensive laboratory markers have identified associations between blood counts and lung cancer outcomes. In this study, we evaluated the prognostic value of paraneoplastic leukocytosis(p-Leukocytosis) and paraneoplastic thrombocytosis(p-Thrombocytosis) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). We also studied their relation to the expression of commonly detected molecular markers. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review on 571 consecutive NSCLC patients over a 10 year period. Blood counts were recorded at the time of cancer diagnosis. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to compare overall survival(OS) between patients with and without p-Leukocytosis(or) p-Thrombocytosis(p-Leuko/Thrombocytosis). Cox regression was used to determine if leukocytosis/thrombocytosis was a predictor of OS in NSCLC.Results: Patients with p-Leukocytosis and p-Thrombocytosis had a significantly poorer survival compared patients with normal blood counts(P<0.001). In a multivariate survival analysis, both continued to correlate even when adjusted for histology, gender, stage and chemotherapy(P<0.01, 0.03 respectively). Stage I and II NSCLC with p-Leuko/Thrombocytosis did not perform poorly compared to stage I/II NSCLC patients without paraneoplasia. Patients with the combined leukothrombocytosis syndrome did not have worse outcomes compared to those with either paraneoplastic syndrome alone. Conclusions: p-Leuko/Thrombocytosis is an accessible laboratory parameter of prognostic value in NSCLC. Evidence of p-Leuko/Thrombocytosis portends poor survival. The role of various cytokines in tumor pathobiology provides a rationale for identifying cytokine factors responsible for the paraneoplasia and administering anti-cytokine therapies alongside traditional chemotherapy in an attempt to improve survival outcomes in these subset of patients. | Prajwal BODDU Dana VILLLINES Mebea AKLILU | 2016 | 中国肺癌杂志2016,19,11: | 1 |
