1Influence of ellagic acid on prostate cancer cell proliferation:A caspase-dependent pathway显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the effect of allagic acid treatment on the cell viability of human prostate cancer cells.Methods:Ellagic acid(10-100 mol/L) treatment(48 h) of human prostate carcinoma PC3 cells was found to result in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth and apoptosis of PC3 cells as assessed by MTT assay,western blotting.flow cytometry and confocal microscopy.Results:We observed that ellagic acid treatment of PC3 cells resulted in a dose dependent inhibition of cell growth/cell viability.This ellagic acid caused cell growth inhibition was found to be accompanied by induction of apoptosis,as assessed by the cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase(PARP) and morphological changes.Further,induction of apoptosis accompanied a decrease in the levels of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 and increase in proapoptotic protein Bax.thus shifting the Bax:Bcl-2 ratio in favor of apoptosis.Ellagic acid treatment of PC3 cells was also found to result in significant activation of caspases,as shown by the dose dependent decrease in the protein expression of procaspase-3,-6.-8 and -9.This ellagic acid-mediated induction of apoptosis was significantly(80%-90%) inhibited by the caspase inhibitor N-benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp(OMe)-fluoromethylketone(Z-VAD-FMK).Thus these data suggested an essential role of caspases in ellagic acid-mediated apoptosis of PC3 cells.Conclusions:It is tempting to suggest that consumption of tropical pigmented fruits and vegetables could be an effective strategy to combat prostate cancer.Arshi Malik Sarah Afaq Mohammad Shahid Kafil Akhtar Abdullah Assiri 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,7:18
2Spatial distribution and source identification of heavy metal pollution in roadside surface soil:a study of Dhaka Aricha highway,Bangladesh显示文摘Introduction:In this study,metal pollution and their sources in surface soils were evaluated by pollution indices and multivariate statistical techniques in association with a geographical information system(GIS).Methods:Surface soil samples were collected in dry season from different locations of Dhaka Aricha highway and analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence(EDXRF).Results:Thirteen different metals were found in the tested samples.Pollution indices are determined by enrichment factor in an order of Zr>Sn>P>Mn>Zn>Rb>Fe>Ba>Sr>Ti>K>Ca>Al.The resulting geoaccumulation index(Igeo)value shows the following order:Sn>Zr>P>Mn>Zn>Rb>Fe>Ba>Ti>Sr>K>Ca>Al.Contamination factors(CFs)of the metals range from 1.422 to 3.979(Fe);0.213 to 1.089(Al);0.489 to 3.484(Ca);1.496 to 2.372(K);1.287 to 3.870(Ti);2.200 to 14.588(Mn);5.938 to 56.750(Zr);0.980 to 3.500(Sr);2.321 to 4.857(Rb);2.737 to 6.526(Zn);16.667 to 27.333(Sn);3.157 to 16.286(P);and 0.741 to 3.328(Ba).Pollution load index calculated from the CFs indicates that soils are strongly contaminated by Zr and Sn.Principal component analysis(PCA)of parameters exhibits three major components.R-mode cluster analysis reveals three distinct groups in both site and metal basis clustering that shows a similar pattern with the PCA.Conclusions:These results might be helpful for future monitoring of further increase of heavy metal concentrations in surface soils along highways.Fahad Ahmed A.N.M.Fakhruddin M.D.Toufick Imam Nasima Khan Tanzir Ahmed Khan Md.Mahfuzur Rahman Abu Tareq Mohammad Abdullah 2016Ecological Processes2016,5,1:11
3INTERMOLECULAR INTERACTION OF A NEUTRAL POLYMERIC BONDING AGENT CONTAINING N-VINYLPYRROLIDONE UNITS WITH AMMONIUM PERCHLORATE AND KETO-RDX显示文摘The interaction of a new neutral polymeric bonding agent(NPBA) containing N-Vinylpyrrolidone units with two types of oxidizers(ammonium perchlorate and Keto-RDX) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). NPBA forms a layer of film on the surface of oxidizers. 4Clinical features and visual outcomes of scleritis patients presented to tertiary care eye centers in Saudi Arabia显示文摘AIM: To describe the clinical features, systemic associations, treatment and visual outcomes in Saudi patients with scleritis.·METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for patients with scleritis presenting to two tertiary care eye hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2001 to 2011.Data were collected on the clinical features of scleritis,subtypes of scleritis, associated systemic disease,history of previous ocular surgery and medical therapy,including the use of immunosuppressants. Treatment outcomes were evaluated based on best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) and response to treatment.·RESULTS: Of the 52 patients included in the study,non-necrotizing anterior scleritis was the most common type of scleritis in 22 patients(42.3%), followed by posterior scleritis in 14 patients(26.9%). The majority of cases, 31 patients(59.6%), were idiopathic in nature.Systemic associations were present in 12 patients(23.1%). Infectious scleritis was confirmed in 6 patients(11.5%): 3 with bacterial scleritis after pterygium excision, 2 patients with scleritis related to tuberculosis and 1 patient with scleritis resulting from herpes simplex infection. For the various subtypes of scleritis, BCVA values after treatment and time to remission significantly differed(P <0.05, all cases).Systemic immunosuppressive therapies in addition to steroids were administered to 46.2% of all patients. The T-sign was present on B-scan ultrasonography in 9(64.3%) of the 14 posterior scleritis patients.·CONCLUSION: Non-necrotizing anterior scleritis was the most common subtype of scleritis. 5Improvement of the efficacy of influenza vaccination (H5N1) in chicken by using extract of Cochinchina momordica seed (ECMS)显示文摘Seeds of a Chinese traditional medicine plant, Cochinchina momordica were used in the present study for the improvement of influenza vaccine (H5N1) in chicken. Crude extraction from Cochinchina momordica seed (ECMS) was obtained by ethanol extraction method. In experiment No. 1, two weeks old chickens were immunized with influenza vaccine (H5N1) alone or combined with ECMS (5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 μg/dose). Serum IgG antibody levels (by ELISA) as well as effects on daily weight gain were measured on 0, 7, 14 and 28th day after immunization. Results revealed that all ECMS groups numerically increased the antibody levels while 10 and 20 μg/dose groups significantly (P<0.05) enhanced total IgG antibody on day 28, when compared with control. Average daily weight gain was also significantly higher in 20 μg/dose ECMS group. Adjuvant effect was also confirmed in experiment No. 2 when chickens were immunized with 20 μg/dose ECMS and antibody titer was measured through hemagglutination inhibition (HI). 6Interaction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with drug in aqueous/electrolyte solution:A combined conductometric and molecular dynamics method study显示文摘Interaction between beta-lactum antibiotic drug ciprofloxacin hydrochloride(CFH)and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)was performed conductometrically in aqueous as well as in the occurrence of different salts(NaCl,KCl as well as NH_4Cl)over the temperature range of 298.15–323.15 K at the regular interval of 5 K.CFH drug has been suggested for the treatment of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and acute sinusitis.A clear critical micelle concentration(CMC)was obtained for pure CTAB as well as(CFH+CTAB)mixed systems.The decrease in CMC values of CTAB caused by the addition of CFH reveals the existence of the interaction between the components and therefore it is the indication of micelle formation at lower concentration of CTAB and their CMC values further decrease in attendance of salts.A nonlinear behavior in the CMC versus T plot was observed in all the cases.The ΔG_m^0 values are found to be negative in present study systems demonstrated the stability of the solution.The values of ΔH_m^0 and ΔS_m^0 reveal the existence of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between CFH and CTAB.The thermodynamic properties of transfer for the micellization were also evaluated and discussed in detail.Molecular dynamic simulation disclosed that environment of water and salts have impact on the hydrophobic interaction between CFH and CTAB.In water and salts,CTAB adopts spherical micelle in which charged hydrophilic groups are interacted with waters whereas hydrophobic tails form the core of the micelle.This hydrophobic core region is highly conserved and protected.In addition,micelle formation is more favorable in aqueous Na Cl solution than other solutions.Md.Anamul Hoque Md.Masud Alam Mohammad Robel Molla Shahed Rana Malik Abdul Rub Mohammad A.Halim Mohammed Abdullah Khan Farida Akhtar 2018Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,1:3
7Glutathione (GSH) improves sperm quality and testicular morphology in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice显示文摘Diabetes mellitus(DM)is known to cause reproductive impairment.In men,it has been linked to altered sperm quality and testicular damage.Oxidative stress(OS)plays a pivotal role in the development of DM complications.Glutathione(GSH)is a part of a nonenzymatic antioxidant defense system that protects lipid,protein,and nucleic acids from oxidative damage.However,the protective effects of exogenous GSH on the male reproductive system have not been comprehensively examined.This study determined the impact of GSH supplementation in ameliorating the adverse effect of type 1 DM on sperm quality and the seminiferous tubules of diabetic C57BL/6NTac mice.GSH at the doses of 15 mg kg^(-1)and 30 mg kg^(-1)was given intraperitoneally to mice weekly for 6 consecutive weeks.The mice were then weighed,euthanized,and had their reproductive organs excised.The diabetic(D Group)showed significant impairment of sperm quality and testicular histology compared with the nondiabetic(ND Group).Diameters of the seminiferous lumen in diabetic mice treated with 15 mg kg^(-1) GSH(DGSH15)were decreased compared with the D Group.Sperm motility was also significantly increased in the DGSH15 Group.Improvement in testicular morphology might be an early indication of the protective roles played by the exogenous GSH in protecting sperm quality from effects of untreated type 1 DM or diabetic complications.Further investigation using different doses and different routes of GSH is necessary to confirm this suggestion.Fathiah Abdullah Mohamed Noor Khan Nor-Ashikin Renu Agarwal Yuhaniza Shafinie Kamsani Mastura Abd Malek Nor Salmah Bakar Aqila-Akmal Mohammad Kamal Mimi-Sophia Sarbandi Nor-Shahida Abdul Rahman Nurul Huda Musa 2021Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,3:3
8Effects of stand characteristics on tree species richness in and around a conservation area of northeast Bangladesh显示文摘We investigated the effect of tree cover,forest patch and disturbances on tree species richness in a highly diverse conservation area of northeast Bangladesh.A systematic sampling protocol was adopted and 80 sub-plots from twenty five 1 ha plots were used for the vegetation survey.Linear regression analysis was performed to understand the effect of patch area,disturbances and tree cover on tree species richness.Ordination using Redundancy analysis(RDA) and Non-metric Multi Dimensional Scaling(NMDS) were also performed to explore the tree species compositional similarities along the stand characteristics gradient and locations of the sample plots.Our study revealed that,forest patch size has greater influence on species richness.Areas with medium level of disturbances have shown greater species richness.In constrained ordination the selected explanatory variables regulated the richness of common species.Our findings can be useful for better forest management and restoration of landscapes of conservation needs using ecologically important species.Muha Abdullah Al PAVEL SharifA.MUKUL Mohammad Belal UDDIN Kazuhiro HARADA Mohammed A.S.ARFIN KHAN 2016Journal of Mountain Science2016,13,6:2
9Molecular hallmarks of long non-coding RNAs in aging and its significant effect on aging-associated diseases显示文摘Aging is linked to the deterioration of many physical and cognitive abilities and is the leading risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. The growing aging population is a significant healthcare problem globally that researchers must investigate to better understand the underlying aging processes. Advances in microarrays and sequencing techniques have resulted in deeper analyses of diverse essential genomes(e.g., mouse, human, and rat) and their corresponding cell types, their organ-specific transcriptomes, and the tissue involved in aging. Traditional gene controllers such as DNA-and RNA-binding proteins significantly influence such programs, causing the need to sort out long non-coding RNAs, a new class of powerful gene regulatory elements. However, their functional significance in the aging process and senescence has yet to be investigated and identified. Several recent researchers have associated the initiation and development of senescence and aging in mammals with several well-reported and novel long non-coding RNAs.
