| 1 | Rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries显示文摘Spinal cord injury(SCI) is the injury of the spinal cord from the foramen magnum to the cauda equina whichoccurs as a result of compulsion, incision or contusion. The most common causes of SCI in the world are traffic accidents, gunshot injuries, knife injuries, falls and sports injuries. There is a strong relationship between functional status and whether the injury is complete or not complete, as well as the level of the injury. The results of SCI bring not only damage to independence and physical function, but also include many complications from the injury. Neurogenic bladder and bowel, urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, orthostatic hypotension, fractures, deep vein thrombosis, spasticity, autonomic dysreflexia, pulmonary and cardiovascular problems, and depressive disorders are frequent complications after SCI. SCI leads to serious disability in the patient resulting in the loss of work, which brings psychosocial and economic problems. The treatment and rehabilitation period is long, expensive and exhausting in SCI. Whether complete or incomplete, SCI rehabilitation is a long process that requires patience and motivation of the patient and relatives. Early rehabilitation is important to prevent joint contractures and the loss of muscle strength, conservation of bone density, and to ensure normal functioning of the respiratory and digestive system. An interdisciplinary approach is essential in rehabilitation in SCI, as in the other types of rehabilitation. | 2 | Coexistence of Mirizzi syndrome with adenomyomatosis in the gallbladder:report of a case显示文摘BACKGROUND:Mirizzi syndrome is a rare complication of cholelithiasis. Adenomyomatosis is a common tumor-like lesion of the gallbladder. METHODS:A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of right hypochondriac pain and jaundice. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed stones in the gallbladder and dilation of the intrahepatic bile ducts. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed narrowing of the common bile duct caused by compression of the gallbladder. Laparotomy revealed type Ⅱ Mirizzi syndrome. RESULTS:Partial cholecystectomy with a Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy reconstruction was performed. Histologically,Rokitansky-Aschoff sinus proliferation,hypertrophy of smooth muscles,and fibrosis were seen in the gallbladder. A segmental type of adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder was diagnosed. CONCLUSIONS:The pathogenic link between the two peculiar entities is unclear. | 3 | Effect of infliximab on small bowel stenoses in patients with Crohn's disease显示文摘AIM: To assess prospectively small bowel stenoses in Crohn's disease (CD) patients treated with infliximab using Small Intestine Contrast Ultrasonography (SICUS). METHODS: Twenty patients (M 12, age, 42.7 ± 11.8 years), 15 of whom showed obstructive symptoms indicating the presence of small bowel stenosis, and 5 without stenosis, were treated with infliximab (5 mg/kg at wk 0, 2, 6 and 5 mg/kg every 8 wk thereafter) for steroid refractoriness, fistulizing disease, or to avoid high-risk surgery. SICUS was performed at the induction phase and at regular time intervals during the follow-up period of 34.7 ± 16.1 mo (range 7-58). Small bowel stenoses were detected by SICUS, endoscopy and MRI. RESULTS: In no case was progression of stenoses or the appearance of new ones seen. Of the 15 patients with stenosis, 5 stopped treatment after the induction phase (2 for no response, 3 for drug intolerance, one of whom showed complete regression of one stenosis). Among the remaining 10 patients, a complete regression of 8 stenoses (1 stenosis in 5 patients and 3 stenoses in one patient) was observed after 6-22 infliximab infusions. | 5 | Outgrowth endothelial cells form a functional cerebral barrier and restore its integrity after damage显示文摘Breakdown of blood-brain barrier,formed mainly by brain microvascular endothelial cells(BMECs),represents the major cause of mortality during early phases of ischemic strokes.Hence,discovery of novel agents that can effectively replace dead or dying endothelial cells to restore blood-brain barrier integrity is of paramount importance in stroke medicine.Although endothelial progenitor cells(EPCs)represent one such agents,their rarity in peripheral blood severely limits their adequate isolation and therapeutic use for acute ischemic stroke which necessitate their ex vivo expansion and generate early EPCs and outgrowth endothelial cells(OECs)as a result.Functional analyses of these cells,in the present study,demonstrated that only OECs endocytosed DiI-labelled acetylated low-density lipoprotein and formed tubules on matrigel,prominent endothelial cell and angiogenesis markers,respectively.Further analyses by flow cytometry demonstrated that OECs expressed specific markers for sternness(CD34),immaturity(CD133)and endothelial cells(CD31)but not for hematopoietic cells(CD45).Like BMECs,OECs established an equally tight in vitro model of human BBB with astrocytes and pericytes,suggesting their capacity to form tight junctions.Ischemic injury mimicked by concurrent deprivation of oxygen and glucose(4 hours)or deprivation of oxygen and glucose followed by reperfusion(20 hours)affected both barrier integrity and function in a similar fashion as evidenced by decreases in transendothelial electrical resistance and increases in paracellular flux,respectively.Wound scratch assays comparing the vasculoreparative capacity of cells revealed that,compared to BMECs,OECs possessed a greater proliferative and directional migratory capacity.In a triple culture model of BBB established with astrocytes,pericytes and BMEC,exogenous addition of OECs effectively repaired the damage induced on endothelial layer in serum-free conditions.Taken together,these data demonstrate that OECs may effectively home to the site of vascular injury and repair the damage to maintain(neuro)vascular homeostasis during or after a cerebral ischemic injury. | Rais Reskiawan Abdulkadir Mansour Alwjwaj Othman Ahmad Othman Kamini Rakkar Ulvi Bayraktutan | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,6: | 5 |

| 8 | Adipokines and ghrelin in gastric cancer cachexia显示文摘AIM:To investigate the roles of the adipocytokines,ghrelin and leptin in gastric cancer cachexia. METHODS:Resistin,ghrelin,leptin,adiponectin,insulin and insulin-like growth factor(IGF-Ⅰ),were measured in 30 healthy subjects,and 60 gastric cancer patients of which 30 suffered from cancer-induced cachexia and 30 served as a control group. The relationships between hormones,body mass index(BMI) loss ratio,age,gender,and Glasgow Prognostic Score(GPS) were investigated. RESULTS:Cachexia patients had higher tumor stage and GPS when compared with non-cachexia patients(P < 0.05). Ghrelin,resistin,leptin,adiponectin and IGF-Ⅰ,showed a significant correlation with BMI loss ratio and GPS(P < 0.05). A strong correlation was seen between GPS and BMI loss(R = -0.570,P < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis indicated that BMI loss was significantly independent as a predictor of ghrelin,resistin,leptin and IGF-Ⅰ(P < 0.05). Existence of an important significant relationship between resistin and insulin resistance was also noted. CONCLUSION:These results showed that serum ghrelin,leptin,adiponectin,and IGF-Ⅰ play important roles in cachexia-related gastric cancers. No relationshipwas found between resistin and cancer cachexia. | 16 | Characterization of cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon for removal of chromium and lead ions from tannery wastewater via adsorption equilibrium显示文摘In this experiment,cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon(CF-AC)was developed and characterized via the wet impregnation method for the removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions from tannery wastewater.Batch adsorption was carried out to evaluate the effect of experimental operating conditions(pH of solution,contact time,adsorbent dose,and temperature),and the removal efficiencies of Cr and Pb(II)ions by the developed adsorbents were calculated and recorded for all experimental conditions.These variables were estimated and reported as removal efficiencies of 98.2%for Cr and 96.4%for Pb(II)ions at the optimal conditions of 5,0.8 g,80 min,and 333 K for pH,adsorbent dose,contact time,and temperature,respectively.The equilibrium for the sorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions was studied using four widely used isotherm models(the Langmuir,Freundlich,Dubinin-Radushkevich,and Temkin isotherm models).It was found that the Freundlich isotherm model fit better with the coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.9484 and a small sum of square error of 0.0006.The maximum adsorption capacities(Qm)of Pb(II)and Cr adsorbed onto CF-AC were determined to be 6.27 and 23.6 mg/g,respectively.The adsorption process conformed well to pseudo-second order kinetics as revealed by the high R2 values obtained for both metals.The thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions onto CF-AC was spontaneous,feasible,and endothermic under the studied conditions.The mean adsorption energy(E)values revealed that the adsorption mechanism of Cr and Pb(II)by CF-AC is physical in nature.The results of the study showed that adsorbent developed from CF-AC can be efficiently used as an environmentally friendly alternative adsorbent,for removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions in tannery wastewater. | Muibat Diekola Yahya Kehinde Shola Obayomi Mohammed Bello Abdulkadir Yahaya Ahmed Iyaka Adeola Grace Olugbenga | 2020 | Water Science and Engineering2020,13,3: | 2 |
